RESUMO

Twenty-five broiler chickens, which habitually adopted a unilateral weight-bearing stance, were studied. In all cases the contralateral limb was held free of the ground, normally as a result of gross valgus angulation of the intertarsal joint. The left pelvic limb was more frequently weight-bearing than the right which suggests that a pattern of limb dominance may occur in broiler fowls. Metaphyseal lesions, suggestive of dyschondroplasia, were more common in the load-bearing limb. This suggests that altered load-bearing or posture can initiate or exacerbate dyschondroplasia in susceptible birds. The load-bearing limb also showed altered patterns of bone torsion. These findings are similar to those observed in induced physeal (growth plate) osteochondrosis in mammals and the pathogenesis of lesions is likely to be similar.

RESUMO

After desmotomy of the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon (distal check ligament) had been performed in 40 horses with flexural deformity of the distal interphalangeal joint (contracture of the deep digital flexor tendon), the horses' records were evaluated retrospectively. Information concerning soundness, return to intended purpose, and cosmetic appearance of the limb and hoof was obtained. The condition had been diagnosed and treated in 26 horses before they were one year old (group A, acute) and in 14 horses greater than one year of age (group B, chronic). Nine months to 4 years after surgery, 35 horses (24 from group A, and 11 from group B) were not lame and were being used as athletes. Thirty-three horses were being used for what the owner had intended before the development of the flexural deformity, and 7 were not. Of these 7 horses, 6 had complications related to the deformity, whereas one had complications resulting from surgery.

RESUMO

Five young horses with fetlock varus deformities of 8 degrees or greater were treated by means of wedge osteotomy of the distal end of the 3rd metacarpal or metatarsal bone. Three patients were admitted to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine and 2 to Colorado State University. Their selection as surgical patients was based on the following criteria: (1) an angular limb deformity of 8 degrees or greater, (2) patient older than 120 days, (3) no evidence of lameness, and (4) no evidence of degenerative joint disease. The surgery was successful in all cases.

RESUMO

The leg and foot abnormalities of a flock of 911 Wrolstad White turkeys were described and were analyzed statistically to determine the relationship of the incidences of leg and foot abnormalities to sex and body weight of the turkeys. Body weight and a visual observation of the condition of legs and feet of each turkey were recorded at the age of nearly 12 weeks. The sex of each turkey had been recorded at one day of age. Based on chi-square contingency tables, the incidence of the leg and foot abnormalities was related to sex. The male turkeys were far more likely to experience leg and foot abnormalities than were the females. The incidence rate of severe leg and foot abnormalities was 16.1% for the males and 4.8% for females. The incidence of leg and foot abnormalities was not related to weight per se. The light turkeys of either sex were just as likely as the heavy turkeys of the same sex to have leg and foot abnormalities.
