RESUMO

Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS) is a rare perceptual disorder characterized mainly by perceptual distortions of visual objects and one's own body. While there are many case reports of visual and somatosensory distortions associated with AIWS, little is known about auditory distortion. Therefore, we present the case of a 22-year-old right-handed woman who described having auditory as well as visual and somatosensory distortion experiences and a family history of AIWS. The subject reported experiencing multisensory perceptual distortions, where she sees other people's faces as larger and hears their voices as louder at the same time. This particular case suggests that auditory distortion - which contributes to constructing the perception of the surrounding space and the body - may also be characterized as a perceptual symptom of AIWS.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a devastating public health issue. To successfully address ARHL using existing and future treatments, it is imperative to detect the earliest signs of age-related auditory decline and understand the mechanisms driving it. Here, we explore early signs of age-related auditory decline by characterizing cochlear function in 199 ears aged 10-65 years, all of which had clinically defined normal hearing (i.e., behavioral thresholds ≤ 25 dB HL from .25 to 8 kHz bilaterally) and no history of noise exposure. We characterized cochlear function by measuring behavioral thresholds in two paradigms (traditional audiometric thresholds from .25 to 8 kHz and Békésy tracking thresholds from .125 to 20 kHz) and distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) growth functions at f2 = 2, 4, and 8 kHz. Behavioral thresholds through a standard clinical frequency range (up to 8 kHz) showed statistically, but not clinically, significant declines across increasing decades of life. In contrast, DPOAE growth measured in the same frequency range showed clear declines as early 30 years of age, particularly across moderate stimulus levels (L2 = 25-45 dB SPL). These substantial declines in DPOAE growth were not fully explained by differences in behavioral thresholds measured in the same frequency region. Additionally, high-frequency Békésy tracking thresholds above ~11.2 kHz showed frank declines with increasing age. Collectively, these results suggest that early age-related cochlear decline (1) begins as early as the third or fourth decade of life, (2) is greatest in the cochlear base but apparent through the length of the cochlear partition, (3) cannot be detected fully by traditional clinical measures, and (4) is likely due to a complex mix of etiologies.

Concurrent body movements have been shown to enhance the accuracy of spatial judgment, but it remains unclear whether they also contribute to perceptual estimates of gravitational space not involving body movements. To address this, we evaluated the effects of static or dynamic arm movements during prolonged whole-body tilt on the subsequent perceptual estimates of visual or postural vertical. In Experiment 1, participants were asked to continuously perform static or dynamic arm movements during prolonged tilt, and we assessed their effects on the prolonged tilt-induced shifts of subjective visual vertical (SVV) at a tilted position (during-tilt session) or near upright (post-tilt session). In Experiment 2, we evaluated how static or dynamic arm movements during prolonged tilt subsequently affected the subjective postural vertical (SPV). In Experiment 1, we observed that the SVV was significantly shifted toward the direction of prolonged tilt in both sessions. The SVV shifts decreased when performing dynamic arm movements in the during-tilt session, but not in the post-tilt session. In Experiment 2, as well as SVV, the SPV was shifted toward the direction of prolonged tilt, but it was not significantly attenuated by the performance of static or dynamic arm movements. The results of the during-tilt session suggest that the central nervous system utilizes additional information generated by dynamic body movements for perceptual estimates of visual vertical.

Humans interact in groups through various perception and action channels. The continuity of interaction despite a transient loss of perceptual contact often exists and contributes to goal achievement. Here, we study the dynamics of this continuity, in two experiments involving groups of participants ([Formula: see text]) synchronizing their movements in space and in time. We show that behavioural unison can be maintained after perceptual contact has been lost, for about 7s. Agent similarity and spatial configuration in the group modulated synchronization performance, differently so when perceptual interaction was present or when it was memorized. Modelling these data through a network of oscillators enabled us to clarify the double origin of this memory effect, of individual and social nature. These results shed new light into why humans continue to move in unison after perceptual interruption, and are consequential for a wide variety of applications at work, in art and in sport.

The spatial coordinate system in which a stimulus representation is embedded is known as its reference frame. Every visual representation has a reference frame [1], and the visual system uses a variety of reference frames to efficiently code visual information [e.g., 1-5]. The representation of faces in early stages of visual processing depends on retino-centered reference frames, but little is known about the reference frames that code the high-level representations used to make judgements about faces. Here, we focus on a rare and striking disorder of face perception-hemi-prosopometamorphopsia (hemi-PMO)-to investigate these reference frames. After a left splenium lesion, Patient A.D. perceives features on the right side of faces as if they had melted. The same features were distorted when faces were presented in either visual field, at different in-depth rotations, and at different picture-plane orientations including upside-down. A.D.'s results indicate faces are aligned to a view- and orientation-independent face template encoded in a face-centered reference frame, that these face-centered representations are present in both the left and right hemisphere, and that the representations of the left and right halves of a face are dissociable.

Observers can discriminate between blurry and low-contrast images (Morgan, 2017). Wang and Simoncelli (2004) demonstrated that a code for blur is inherent to the phase relationships between localized pattern detectors of different scales. To test whether human observers actually use local phase coherence when discriminating between image blur and loss of contrast, we compared phase-scrambled chessboards with unscrambled chessboards. Although both stimuli had identical amplitude spectra, local phase coherence was disrupted by phase-scrambling. Human observers were required to concurrently detect and identify (as contrast or blur) image manipulations in the 2 × 2 forced-choice paradigm (Nachmias & Weber, 1975; Watson & Robson, 1981) traditionally considered to be a litmus test for "labelled lines" (i.e. detection mechanisms that can be distinguished on the basis of their preferred stimuli). Phase scrambling reduced some observers' ability to discriminate between blur and a reduction in contrast. However, none of our observers produced data consistent with Watson and Robson's most stringent test for labeled lines, regardless whether phases were scrambled or not. Models of performance fit significantly better when (a) the blur detector also responded to contrast modulations, (b) the contrast detector also responded to blur modulations, or (c) noise in the two detectors was anticorrelated.

Food deprivation has been shown to lead to a set of biological and psychological responses, including a decrease in perceptual thresholds, and an increase in attentional allocation for domain-specific, food-related stimuli. Here, we tested whether food deprivation could lead to a qualitative change in the way food is perceived. To this purpose, we tested the effect of food deprivation on a basic feature of human perception, the holistic processing of object shape. In three experiments, we examined the effect of food deprivation on participants' susceptibility to the height-width illusion, which served as a maker for holistic processing. In all experiments, food deprivation led to an abnormal, non-holistic processing of shape, which resulted in a total reduction of the illusion for food-related, but not for control stimuli. These results show that food deprivation alters the way food is perceived, and propose that motivational factors modulate people's resistance to perceptual distortions for domain-specific stimuli.

We used a novel method to capture the spatial dominance pattern of competing motion fields at rivalry onset. When rivaling velocities were different, the participants reported center-surround segmentation: The slower stimuli often dominated in the center while faster motion persisted along the borders. The size of the central static/slow field scaled with the stimulus size. The central dominance was time-locked to the static stimulus onset but was disrupted if the dynamic stimulus was presented later. We then used the same stimuli as masks in an interocular suppression paradigm. The local suppression strengths were probed with targets at different eccentricities. Consistent with the center-surround segmentation, target speed and location interacted with mask velocities. Specifically, suppression power of the slower masks was nonhomogenous with eccentricity, providing a potential explanation for center-surround velocity-based segmentation. This interaction of speed, eccentricity, and timing has implications for motion processing and interocular suppression. The influence of different masks on which target features get suppressed predicts that some "unconscious effects" are not generalizable across masks and, thus, need to be replicated under various masking conditions.

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence of hearing impairment in patients with various glucose disorders. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 499 individuals were studied, 51 patients with type 1 (TIDM), 188 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), 39 patients with impaired fasting glucose (IFG), and 221 controls. Measurements were performed, blood was drawn, and a relevant questionnaire was completed. Ηearing function was assessed by pure-tone audiometry (PTA) and distortion product otoacustic emissions (DPOAEs). RESULTS: Patients with impaired glucose metabolism (IGM: T2DM or IFG) compared to controls had a higher percentage of abnormal PTA and DPOAEs for both the right (70.2 vs. 56.9% and 40.4 vs. 24.2%, respectively, p < 0.001) and the left (74.1 vs. 59.3% and 47.5 vs. 25.4%, respectively, p < 0.001) ear. Patients with TIDM had similar levels for the left ear (54.9 vs. 59.3% and 27.5 vs. 25.4%, respectively, p > 0.05) and lower levels for the right ear (35.3 vs. 56.9% and 13.7 vs. 24.2%, respectively, p < 0.001 and p = 0.044) percentages of abnormal PTA and DPOAEs compared to controls. Logistic regression analysis indicated that independent parameters for abnormal DPOAEs in one or both ears are age, male gender, exposure to noisy environments, and the presence of IGM. CONCLUSIONS: Hearing impairment was more prevalent in patients with IGM compared to healthy controls, as assessed by PTA and DPOAEs. Age, male gender, and exposure to noise are other factors that can independently affect hearing ability. Physicians should bear in mind possible defects in hearing ability when dealing with such patients.

OBJECTIVES: To assess bone conduction (BC) thresholds following radical mastoidectomy and subtotal petrosectomy, in which the tympanic membrane and the ossicular chain, responsible for osseous BC mechanisms, are surgically removed. The removal of the tympanic membrane and the ossicular chain would reduce the contributions to BC threshold of the following four osseous BC mechanisms: the occlusion effect of the external ear, middle ear ossicular chain inertia, inner ear fluid inertia, and distortion (compression-expansion) of the walls of the inner ear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: BC thresholds were determined in 64 patients who underwent radical mastoidectomy and in 248 patients who underwent subtotal petrosectomy. RESULTS: BC thresholds were normal (≤15 dB HL, i.e., better) in 19 (30%) radical mastoidectomy patients and in 19 (8%) subtotal petrosectomy patients at each of the frequencies assessed (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 kHz). CONCLUSION: Normal BC thresholds seen in many patients following mastoidectomy and petrosectomy may be induced by a non-osseous mechanism, and the onset ("threshold") of the classical osseous BC mechanisms may be somewhat higher.

Most people lack the opportunity to see non-domesticated animals in the wild. Consequently, people's perception of wild animals is based on what they see on (social) media. The way in which (social) media portrays non-domesticated animals determines our perception of and behaviour to these animals. People like to interact with animals, which is why venues which offer the opportunity to interact with non-domesticated animals are popular wildlife tourist attractions (WTAs). However, these WTAs more often than not profit at the expense of animal welfare, conservation and human safety. Participation in such WTAs should therefore be discouraged. Through (social) media we are regularly exposed to images of non-domesticated animals in close interactions with humans. Exposure to such images seems to blur the line between what is a friendly domesticated animal and what is a potentially dangerous wild animal. Such images may also increase our desire to engage in interactions with non-domesticated animals ourselves and reduce moral concerns about the use of non-domesticated animals for such interactions, thereby promoting WTAs in which tourists can interact with non-domesticated animals. Wild cat species are commonly used in the wildlife tourism industry to interact with tourists. In this study, we determine whether portrayal of wild cat species in interactions with humans promotes WTAs with wild cats. We presented respondents with an image of a wild cat species (lion, cheetah, caracal) in a control setting, walked by a human (WTA), petted by a human (WTA) or in the wild and asked them to answer a fixed set of questions. We found that portraying wild cat species in interactions with humans reduced the fear of wild cats, encouraged people to regard WTAs with wild cats as acceptable and stimulated them to participate in such activities themselves.

BACKGROUND: A recent study has shown variability on the perception of verticality during unilateral centrifugation among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus; it is yet unknown if it is related to symptoms of unreality. OBJECTIVE: In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus compared to age matched healthy volunteers, to assess depersonalization/derealization (DD) symptoms before and after unilateral centrifugation, according to the subjective visual vertical (SVV). METHODS: 47 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 50 age matched healthy volunteers participated in the study. They replied to standardized questionnaires of symptoms related to balance, depression, and anxiety. Then, after neuro-otological evaluation, they completed a DD inventory before and after unilateral centrifugation (300°/s, 3.85 cm) with SVV estimation. RESULTS: Right/left asymmetric SVV during centrifugation was identified in 17 patients (36%) and no SVV change during centrifugation was identified in 6 patients (13%). Before centrifugation, patients with asymmetric SVV already reported some of the DD symptoms, while patients with no SVV change reported almost no DD symptoms. Unilateral centrifugation provoked an increase of DD symptoms in both healthy volunteers and the entire group of patients (repeated measures ANOVA, p < 0.01), except in the 6 patients with no SVV change. Before centrifugation, the DD score showed influence from the SVV subgroup and the evidence of depression (MANCoVA, p < 0.01); after centrifugation, which provoked asymmetry of the right/left utricular input, only the influence from depression persisted. No influence was observed from the characteristics of the subjects, including retinopathy, peripheral neuropathy (assessed by electromyography) or weight loss, or from the total score on the questionnaire of symptoms related to balance. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and healthy volunteers, utricular stimulation by unilateral centrifugation may provoke DD symptoms, with an influence from depression. The results support that the aphysiological utricular input given by unilateral centrifugation may contribute to create a misleading vestibular frame of reference, giving rise to 'unreal' perceptions.

Humans display a very good understanding of the content in briefly presented photographs. To achieve this understanding, humans rely on information from both high-acuity central vision and peripheral vision. Previous studies have investigated the relative contribution of central and peripheral vision. However, the role of attention in this task remains unclear. In this study, we presented composite images with a scene in the center and another scene in the periphery. The two channels conveyed different information, and the participants were asked to focus on one channel while ignoring the other. In two experiments, we showed that (a) people are better at recognizing the central part, (b) the conflicting signal in the ignored part hinders performance, and (c) this effect is true for both parts (focusing on the central or peripheral part). We conclude that scene recognition is based on both central and peripheral information, even when participants are instructed to focus only on one part of the image and ignore the other. In contrast to the zoom-out hypothesis, we propose that the gist recognition process should be interpreted in terms of the evidence accumulation model in which information from the to-be-ignored parts is also included.

Amblyopia is a relatively common (incidence 3%) developmental disorder in which there is loss of vision as a consequence of a disruption to normal visual development. Although the deficit is monocular and known to be of cortical origin, the nature of the processing deficit is controversial. Human behavioral studies have identified two main deficits - a loss of contrast sensitivity and perceived spatial distortions. Here we use a multifocal fMRI approach to ascertain, in a group of anisometropic amblyopes, whether these two deficits have a single common cause or whether they are the result of two underlying independent cortical disorders. We found that fMRI magnitudes were attenuated in amblyopic eye stimulation, and that there was poor fidelity for co-localization of the activity clusters between the amblyopic and fellow-fixing eye stimulation. These effects varied across eccentricities and correlate with the degree of amblyopia but not with one another, suggesting two independent cortical deficits: a reduced responsiveness as well as reduced fidelity of spatial representation. These deficits are independent of eccentricity within the central field and consistent across early cortical visual areas.

The flashed face distortion effect is a phenomenon whereby images of faces, presented at 4-5 Hz in the visual periphery, appear distorted. It has been hypothesized that the effect is driven by cortical, rather than retinal, components. Here, we investigated the role of peripheral viewing on the effect. Normally sighted participants viewed the stimulus peripherally, centrally, and centrally with a blurring lens (to match visual acuity in the peripheral location). Participants rated the level of distortion using a Visual Analogue Scale. Although optical defocus did have a significant effect on distortion ratings, peripheral viewing had a much greater effect, despite matched visual acuity. We suggest three potential mechanisms for this finding: increased positional uncertainty in the periphery, reduced deployment of attention to the visual periphery, or the visual crowding effect.

Face and visual word recognition are two key forms of expert visual processing. In the domain of object recognition, it has been suggested that expert processing is characterized by the use of different mechanisms from the ones involved in general object recognition. It has been suggested that one traditional marker of expert processing is the inversion effect. To investigate whether face and word recognition differ from general object recognition, we compared the effect of inversion on the perceptual efficiency of face and visual word recognition as well as on the recognition of a third, non-expert object category, houses. From the comparison of identification contrast thresholds to an ideal observer, we derived the efficiency and equivalent input noise of stimulus processing in both upright and inverted orientations. While efficiency reflects the efficacy in sampling the available information, equivalent input noise is associated with the degradation of the stimulus signal within the visual system. We hypothesized that large inversion effects for efficiency and/or equivalent input noise should characterize expert high-level processes, and asked whether this would be true for both faces and words, but not houses. However, we found that while face recognition efficiency was profoundly reduced by inversion, the efficiency of word and house recognition was minimally influenced by the orientation manipulation. Inversion did not affect equivalent input noise. These results suggest that even though faces and words are both considered expert processes, only the efficiency of the mechanism involved in face recognition is sensitive to orientation.

Dynamic image deformation produces the perception of a transparent material that appears to deform the background image by light refraction. Since past studies on this phenomenon have mainly used subjective judgment about the presence of a transparent layer, it remains unsolved whether this is a real perceptual transparency effect in the sense that it forms surface representations, as do conventional transparency effects. Visual computation for color and luminance transparency, induced mainly by surface-contour information, can be decomposed into two components: surface formation to determine foreground and background layers, and scission to assign color and luminance to each layer. Here we show that deformation-induced perceptual transparency aids surface formation by color transparency and consequently resolves color scission. We asked observers to report the color of the front layer in a spatial region with a neutral physical color. The layer color could be seen as either reddish or greenish depending on the spatial context producing the color transparency, which was, however, ambiguous about the order of layers. We found that adding to the display a deformation-induced transparency that could specify the front layer significantly biased color scission in the predicted way if and only if the deformation-induced transparency was spatially coincident with the interpretation of color transparency. The results indicate that deformation-induced transparency is indeed a novel type of perceptual transparency that plays a role in surface formation in cooperation with color transparency.

Visual attention is an important aspect of everyday life, which can be incorporated in the assessment of many diagnoses. Another important characteristic of visual attention is that it can be improved via therapeutic interventions. Fifteen subjects with normal binocular vision were presented with visual distractor stimuli at various spatial locations while initiating disparity vergence eye movements (inward or outward rotation of eyes) within a haploscope system. First, a stationary distractor stimulus was presented in either the far, middle, or near visual spaces while the subjects were instructed to follow a target stimulus that was either stationary, converging (moving toward subject), or diverging (moving away from subject). For the second experiment, a dynamic distractor stimulus within the far, middle, or near visual space that was converging or diverging was presented while the target stimulus was also converging or diverging. The subjects were instructed to visually follow the target stimulus and ignore the distractor stimulus. The vergence responses had a final vergence angle between the target and distractor stimuli which has been termed a center of gravity (CoG) effect. Statistically significant differences were observed between the convergence peak velocities (p < 0.001) and response amplitudes (p < 0.001) comparing responses without distractors to responses with the presence of a vergence distractor. The results support that vergence eye movements are influenced by visual distractors, which is similar to how distractors influence saccadic eye movements. The influence of visual distractors within vergence eye movements may be useful to assess binocular dysfunction and visual distraction which are common post brain injury.

Hallucinations, a cardinal feature of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, are known to depend on excessive striatal dopamine. However, an underlying cognitive mechanism linking dopamine dysregulation and the experience of hallucinatory percepts remains elusive. Bayesian models explain perception as an optimal combination of prior expectations and new sensory evidence, where perceptual distortions such as illusions and hallucinations may occur if prior expectations are afforded excessive weight. Such excessive weight of prior expectations, in turn, could stem from a gain-control process controlled by neuromodulators such as dopamine. To test for such a dopamine-dependent gain-control mechanism of hallucinations, we studied unmedicated patients with schizophrenia with varying degrees of hallucination severity and healthy individuals using molecular imaging with a pharmacological manipulation of dopamine, structural imaging, and a novel task designed to measure illusory changes in the perceived duration of auditory stimuli under different levels of uncertainty. Hallucinations correlated with a perceptual bias, reflecting disproportional gain on expectations under uncertainty. This bias could be pharmacologically induced by amphetamine, strongly correlated with striatal dopamine release, and related to cortical volume of the dorsal anterior cingulate, a brain region involved in tracking environmental uncertainty. These findings outline a novel dopamine-dependent mechanism for perceptual modulation in physiological conditions and further suggest that this mechanism may confer vulnerability to hallucinations in hyper-dopaminergic states underlying psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic oro-facial pain patients often perceive the painful face area as "swollen" without clinical signs, that is a perceptual distortion (PD). Local anaesthetic (LA) injections in healthy participants are also associated with PD. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to explore whether PD evoked by LA into the infraorbital region could be modulated by adding mechanical stimulation (MS) to the affected area. METHODS: Mechanical stimulation was given with a brush and a 128-mN von Frey filament. Firstly, sixty healthy participants were randomly divided into three groups: (i) LA control, (ii) LA with MS, (iii) isotonic solution (ISO) with MS as an additional control condition. To further examine the role of a multisensory modulation, an additional experiment was conducted. Twenty participants received LA with MS (filament) in addition to visual feedback of their distorted face. The results of the two experiments are presented together. RESULTS: All three LA groups experienced PD; per contra, PD was not reported in the ISO group. MS alone did not change the magnitude of PD: brush (P = .089), filament (P = .203). However, when the filament stimulation was combined with additional visual information of a distorted face, there was observable decrease in PD (P = .002). CONCLUSION: The findings indicate the importance of multisensory integration for PD and represent a significant step forward in the understanding of the factors that may influence this common condition. Future studies are encouraged to investigate further the cortical processing for possible implications for PD in pain management.
