Doppler echocardiographic examinations are an important technique for evaluating the blood flow also in avian cardiology. The influence of anesthesia on the blood flow in the heart is in detail unknown for the most avian species. The present study investigated the influence of an isoflurane anesthesia on the systolic blood flow of the aorta and the pulmonary artery in the area of the heart valves examined by pulsed wave Doppler sonography in Racing Pigeons (Columba livia f. domestica, n = 43). Measurements were taken in conscious and anaesthetized birds in the left (aorta) and right (pulmonary artery) parasternal longitudinal horizontal heart view. The results demonstrated a significant decrease in heart rate and systolic peak flow velocities as well as prolonged ejection times during anesthesia. A positive correlation of systolic peak flow velocity and heart rate could be demonstrated, especially for the pulmonary artery in conscious pigeons. The aortic systolic peak flow velocity and heart rate showed a significantly negative correlation in anaesthetized pigeons. These correlations should be borne in mind in the echocardiographic examination, especially of conscious birds. A higher incidence of second degree atrioventricular block (30.23%) was induced by anesthesia in the Racing Pigeons. These results of the present study indicate the necessity for establishing normal heart values in conscious and anaesthetized individuals.

Our aim was to evaluate the influence of the ageing process on the myocardium using pulsed wave tissue Doppler (PW-TDI) and colour tissue Doppler imaging (cTDI) to measure myocardial velocities at three different myocardial regions (right ventricular free wall: RVFW, interventricular septum: IVS, left ventricular free wall: LVFW). A total of 60 healthy warmblood horses, aged from 3 to 30 years, were examined. The horses were divided into five age groups (group 1: 3-8 years, n = 14; group 2: 9-13 years, n = 9; group 3: 14-18 years, n = 10; group 4: 19-23 years, n = 14; group 5: 24-30 years, n = 10). The results showed that age has a significant influence on the radial myocardial velocity of horses in different myocardial regions. This influence was detectable by both echocardiographic techniques, although PW-TDI measurements showed a higher reproducibility due to lower intraindividual variation coefficients. Systolic contraction velocity (p ≤ 0.01) and early diastolic relaxation velocity (p ≤ 0.001) in the LVFW decreased significantly with ageing, while late diastolic contraction velocity increased (0.001 < p ≤ 0.01). Early and late diastolic contraction velocities at the IVS increased significantly with ageing (p ≤ 0.001). Systolic and late-diastolic contraction velocities at the RVFW increased significantly with ageing (p ≤ 0.001). The results indicated a decrease in left ventricular contraction ability and reduced myocardial relaxation and altered diastolic function in the right ventricle with increasing age. These functional changes may be signs of age-related structural myocardial changes or cardiac remodelling, such as increased myocardial stiffness. Thus, an assessment of the radial myocardial velocities of a horse's heart with TDI should always consider physiological age-related changes in contractility. Comparing the two examination techniques (PW-TDI and cTDI) we used in our study, we found that both methods showed comparable age-related alterations. Nevertheless, differences in absolute values were found with a tendency of higher values using PW-TDI in comparison to cTDI.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is characterized by systolic myocardial dysfunction which is identified by low myocardial velocities obtained by pulsed tissue Doppler (PTD). However, increased preload is known to increase myocardial velocities which could overestimate myocardial function and turn dysfunction characterization into a challenge in dogs with DCM and congestive heart failure. To test the hypothesis that increased preload could hamper identification of low myocardial velocities in dogs with DCM and congestive heart failure the present study prospectively evaluated 32 English Cocker Spaniel dogs, being 16 with clinical DCM and 16 healthy for control purpose. The PTD analysis of regional velocities were performed in both longitudinal and radial myocardial displacements and systolic (Sm), early (Em) and late diastolic (Am) velocities were obtained in left ventricular free wall (LVFW) and interventricular septum (IVS). Peak radial subendocardial and subepicardial Sm velocities were lower in DCM group compared to control (0.065±0.018 vs. 0.102±0.020m/s and 0.059±0.014 vs. 0.094±0.025m/s respectively; p<0.001). Peak longitudinal Sm velocities were lower in basal and medial portions of LVFW (0.093±0.034 vs. 0.155±0.034m/s and 0.091±0.033 vs. 0.134±0.037m/s respectively; p<0.001) and IVS (0.063±0.021 vs. 0.136±0.039 and 0.066±0.026 vs. 0.104±0.032m/s respectively; p<0.001). Most of diastolic velocities were not significantly different between groups, although advanced myocardial disease and dysfunction are expected in DCM group. Reduction in systolic basal and medial longitudinal myocardial velocities and in radial myocardial velocities was the most significant PTD findings. Increased preload did not represent a problem to evaluate systolic dysfunction by PTD in English Cocker Spaniels with DCM, but influence of preload on assessment of diastolic velocities should be better elucidated.(AU)


A cardiomiopatia dilatada (CMD) é caracterizada por disfunção miocárdica sistólica, a qual pode ser identificada pelas baixas velocidades miocárdicas obtidas por meio de Doppler tecidual pulsátil (DTP). Contudo, sabe-se que a elevada pré-carga aumenta as velocidades miocárdicas, o que poderia superestimar a função miocárdica e tornar desafiadora a caracterização da disfunção nos cães com CMD e insuficiência cardíaca congestiva. Para testar a hipótese de que a elevada pré-carga pode mascarar a identificação de baixas velocidades miocárdicas nos cães com CMD e insuficiência cardíaca congestiva, o presente estudo avaliou prospectivamente 32 cães da raça Cocker Spaniel Inglês, sendo 16 com manifestações clínicas de CMD e 16 hígidos para efeito de grupo controle. A análise DTP das velocidades regionais foi realizada tanto no deslocamento miocárdico longitudinal quanto radial e foram obtidas as velocidades sistólica (Sm), diastólica inicial (Em) e tardia (Am) na parede livre do ventrículo esquerdo (PLVE) e no septo interventricular (SIV). Os valores de Sm radial subendocárdicos e subepicárdicos foram menores no grupo CMD em comparação com o grupo controle (0,065±0,018 vs. 0,102±0,020m/s e 0,059±0,014 vs. 0,094±0,025m/s, respectivamente; p<0,001). Os valores de Sm longitudinais foram menores nas porções basal e intermediária da parede do ventrículo esquerdo (0,093±0,034 vs. 0,155±0,034m/s e 0,091±0,033 vs. 0,134±0,037m/s, respectivamente; p<0,001) e do septo interventricular (0,063±0,021 vs. 0,136±0,039 e 0,066±0,026 vs. 0,104±0,032m/s, respectivamente; p<0.001). A maioria dos índices diastólicos não apresentou diferença significativa entre os grupos, apesar de a doença miocárdica avançada e a disfunção serem esperadas no grupo CMD. A redução nas velocidades sistólicas longitudinais nos segmentos basais e intermediários e nas velocidades radiais representaram os achados mais relevantes no estudo com DTP. Nos cães da raça Cocker Spaniel Inglês com CMD e insuficiência cardíaca congestiva a pré-carga elevada não representou empecilho para a avaliação da disfunção sistólica por meio de DTP, porém a influência da pré-carga na avaliação das velocidades diastólicas deve ser mais bem investigada.(AU)

Aortic regurgitation (AR) in horses can lead to left ventricular (LV) eccentric hypertrophy, ventricular arrhythmia and heart failure. Objective quantification of the severity of regurgitation is difficult. The aim of this study was to evaluate dimensional measurements, systolic time intervals and blood flow velocities, acquired by standard 2D, M-mode and pulsed wave Doppler echocardiography, for quantification of AR. Echocardiography was performed in 32 healthy horses and 35 horses with AR that were subdivided in three groups (mild, moderate or severe AR). From the recorded images LV, left atrial and aortic dimensions, systolic time intervals and aortic blood flow velocities were measured. Diastolic run-off in the aorta (AoDiastDecr) was calculated as the difference in aortic diameter between early diastole and late diastole. Stroke volume (SV) was calculated from pulsed wave Doppler measurements, by the bullet method (SVbullet) and by the area-length method. Pre-ejection period (PEP) and ejection time (LVET) were determined from the M-mode images. Horses with AR showed enlargement of the LV, left atrium and aorta compared to the control group. The SV, the AoDiastDecr and the rate of AoDiastDecr were significantly larger than controls. PEP decreased significantly in horses with AR, whereas LVET did not change. PEP and the newly defined variable AoDiastDecr proved to be easy to measure parameters that provided a good indication of AR severity. There was increased SV in horses with AR using all three methods, but SVbullet was superior for the detection of increased AR severity.

This paper reports radial colour and longitudinal mitral annulus pulsed-wave tissue Doppler findings in a large cohort of healthy, adult pet rabbits. Thirty-nine rabbits (22 Dwarf Lops, 14 French Lops and three Alaskans) underwent conscious echocardiography. The median age of the rabbits was 22 months and the median weight was 2.8 kg (Dwarf Lop 2.4 kg/French Lop 6.0 kg). Adequate radial colour and longitudinal pulsed-wave tissue Doppler traces were obtained in 100% and 85% of cases, respectively. Most systolic tissue Doppler parameters were significantly higher in French Lops than in Dwarf Lops. Separation of mitral inflow diastolic waves was present in 40% of cases using conventional spectral Doppler and in >60% of cases using pulsed-wave tissue Doppler which could be beneficial when evaluating diastolic function in rabbits. This study can be used as a reference for normal echocardiographic tissue Doppler values for adult rabbits undergoing conscious echocardiography in clinical practice.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common feline heart disease and is characterized by increased cardiac mass with a hypertrophied nondilated left ventricle. Myocardial dysfunction occurs in cats with HCM but less is known about dysfunctions in initial stages of HCM. A mutation in MYBPC-A31P gene has been identified in a colony of Maine Coon cats with HCM. However, the close correlation between genotype and phenotype still be inconclusive. Myocardial analysis by tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) is a noninvasive echocardiographic method to assess systolic and diastolic function that is more sensitive than conventional echocardiography. To evaluate diastolic and systolic function in cats with mutation, with or without ventricular hypertrophy, Maine Coon cats (n=57) were screened for mutation and examined with both echocardiography and TDI (pulsed tissue Doppler and color tissue Doppler methods). Then, were phenotypically classified in: normal (n=45), suspects (n=7) and HCM group (n=5); and genotypically classified in: negative (n=28), heterozygous (n=26) and homozygous group (n=3). Myocardial velocities (by pulsed and color tissue Doppler imaging) measured in the basal and mildventricular segment of the interventricular septal wall (IVS), left ventricular free wall (LVW), left ventricular anterior wall (LVAW), left ventricular posterior wall (LVPW) and radial segment of LVW, was compared among different groups. A decreased longitudinal Em velocities (pulsed tissue Doppler) at the mildventricular segment of LVW was observed in HCM cats compared with suspects and normal cats. A decreased longitudinal Em/Am (color tissue Doppler) at the basal segment of IVS was observed in HCM cats compared with suspects and normal cats. A significant increased longitudinal E/Em (color tissue Doppler) at the basal segment of IVS was observed in HCM cats compared with suspects and normal cats. And a significant decreased longitudinal Sm (color tissue Doppler) at the basal segment of the LVW was observed in heterozygous cats compared with negative cats, both without hypertrophy. There was a positive correlation between summated early and late diastolic velocities (Em/Am) and heart rate; and a positive correlation between Sm and Em velocities and heart rate, both in pulsed and in color TDI. TDI analyses are a new, valuable and reproducible method in cats that alone is not able to identify cats with mutation before myocardial hypertrophy. Despite high expectations regarding the use of TDI for early identification of individuals with HCM, there is still need for larger studies with greater numbers of individuals.


A cardiomiopatia hipertrófica (CMH) é a principal cardiopatia dos felinos e é caracterizada por hipertrofia miocárdica concêntrica, sem dilatação ventricular. Disfunções miocárdicas ocorrem em gatos com CMH, mas pouco se conhece a respeito destas alterações nos estágios iniciais da afecção. Em gatos da raça Maine Coon, a mutação no gene MyBPC-A31P está relacionada com a CMH de origem familial, porém, a correlação exata entre o genótipo e o fenótipo ainda é inconclusiva. A ecocardiografia tecidual é uma modalidade não invasiva que permite avaliação da função miocárdica e é mais sensível que a ecocardiografia convencional. Para avaliar as funções sistólica e diastólica, antes ou após a ocorrência de hipertrofia ventricular, gatos da raça Maine Coon (n=57), geneticamente testados para a mutação, foram avaliados por meio de ecocardiografias convencional e tecidual (nas modalidades Doppler tecidual pulsado e Doppler tecidual colorido). Posteriormente, foram fenotipicamente classificados em: normais (n=45), suspeitos (n=7) e acometidos pela CMH (n=5); e genotipicamente classificados em: negativos (n=28), heterozigotos (n=26) e homozigotos para a mutação (n=3). Valores de velocidades miocárdicas (Doppler tecidual pulsado e colorido) medidos na região basal e média do septo interventricular (SIV), da parede livre do ventrículo esquerdo (PVE), da parede anterior do ventrículo esquerdo (PAVE), da parede posterior do ventrículo esquerdo (PPVE) e do segmento radial da PVE, foram comparados nos diferentes grupos. Observou-se que as velocidades longitudinais Em (Doppler tecidual pulsado) na região média da PVE foram menores nos gatos com CMH quando comparados com suspeitos e normais. Os valores de Em/Am (Doppler tecidual colorido), na região basal do SIV, foram inferiores nos gatos com CMH quando comparados com suspeitos e normais. A relação E/Em (Doppler tecidual colorido), na região basal do SIV, foi maior nos gatos com CMH em relação aos suspeitos e normais, enquanto que os valores de Sm (Doppler tecidual colorido), em região basal da PVE, foram menores nos gatos heterozigotos quando comparados com os negativos, ambos sem hipertrofia ventricular. Observou-se correlação positiva entre a ocorrência de fusão das ondas Em e Am e a frequência cardíaca, assim como correlação positiva entre valores de Sm e Em e a frequência cardíaca (Doppler tecidual pulsado e colorido). A ecocardiografia tecidual é uma nova modalidade ecocardiográfica reprodutível em gatos que, isoladamente, não permite diferenciar gatos portadores da mutação antes do desenvolvimento de hipertrofia ventricular. Apresenta utilidade como auxílio no diagnóstico em fases iniciais, mas, apesar da expectativa para a identificação precoce de indivíduos portadores da CMH, ainda há necessidade de estudos mais extensos e com maior número de indivíduos.

This study was conducted to evaluate the usefulness of coronary arterial profiles from normal dogs (11 animals) and canines (six dogs) with experimental myocardial infarction (MI) induced by ligation of the left coronary artery (LCA). Blood velocity of the LCA and right coronary artery (RCA) were evaluated following transthoracic pulsed-wave Doppler echocardiography. The LCA was observed as an infundibular shape, located adjacent to the sinus of Valsalva. The RCA appeared as a tubular structure located 12 o'clock relative to the aorta. In normal dogs, the LCA and RCA mean peak diastolic velocities were 20.84 ± 3.24 and 19.47 ± 2.67 cm/sec, respectively. The LCA and RCA mean diastolic deceleration times were 0.91 ± 0.14 sec and 1.13 ± 0.20 sec, respectively. In dogs with MI, the LCA had significantly (p < 0.01) lower peak velocities (14.82 ± 1.61 cm/sec) than the RCA (31.61 ± 2.34 cm/sec). The RCA had a significantly (p < 0.01) rapid diastolic deceleration time (0.71 ± 0.06 sec) than that found in the LCA (1.02 ± 0.22 sec) of MI dogs. In conclusion, these profiles may serve as a differential factor for evaluating cardiomyopathy in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneously occurring small animal models of myocardial disease, closely resembling the human condition, have been reported for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (in cats) and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (in cats and boxer dogs). Nonhypertrophied restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM) is a well-recognized but relatively uncommon primary heart muscle disease causing substantial morbidity in humans. We describe RCM occurring in felines here as a potential model of human disease. METHODS: We used two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiography to define morphologic and functional features of RCM in 35 domestic cats (25 male; 10±4 years old) presenting to a subspecialty veterinary clinic. Ten underwent complete necropsy examination. Echocardiographic parameters of diastolic filling were compared to those in 41 normal controls. RESULTS: The 35 cats presented with congestive heart failure (n=32), lethargy (n=2), or syncope (n=1), associated with thromboembolism in 5 and supraventricular tachyarrhythmias in 8. During an average 4.4-year follow-up period, 18 died or were euthanized due to profound heart failure, and 3 died suddenly; survival from clinical presentation to death was 0.1 to 52 months. Echocardiographic and necropsy examination showed biatrial enlargement, nondilated ventricular chambers, and normal wall thicknesses and atrioventricular valves. Histopathology demonstrated disorganized myocyte architecture and patchy replacement myocardial fibrosis. Pulsed Doppler demonstrated restrictive physiology with increased early (E) mitral filling velocity (1.1±0.3 m/s) and peak E to peak late (A) flow ratios (4.3±1.2), reduced A filling velocity (0.3±0.1 m/s), and shortened mitral deceleration time (40.7±9.3 ms; all P<.001 vs. controls), with preserved left ventricular systolic function. CONCLUSIONS: A primary myocardial disease occurring spontaneously in domestic cats is remarkably similar to restrictive nondilated and nonhypertrophied cardiomyopathy in man and represents another potential animal model for human disease.

The aim of this study was to evaluate to what extent the myocardial function in horses (measured by PW-tissue Doppler = PW-TDI) is affected during a sedation with romifidine (0.04 mg/kg, i. v.), particularly in case of an accompanying heart disease. Based on an echo- and electrocardiographic examination, a total of 45 horses was subdivided into group 1 (no heart disease), group 2 (heart disease without increased heart dimensions) and group 3 (heart disease with increased heart dimensions). Heart rate (HF), M-mode- (FS%) and TDI-measurements were performed before and after the application of romifidine. The velocities of the radial myocardial movement in the left and right ventricular wall were evaluated using PW-TDI. The TDI parameters included the isovolumic contraction (IVC), the systolic (S) as well as the early (E) and late diastolic maximal velocity (A). After the application of romifidine HF and FS were significantly decreased in all groups. IVC, S and E, determined by PW-TDI were also significantly decreased in both ventricular walls. A significant difference between groups was shown for the isovolumic contraction in the left ventricular wall. This was observed distinctly more in horses with heart disease and increased heart dimensions compared to horses with heart disease but no increased heart dimensions. The results of the study indicate that PW-TDI is a suitable imaging technique to analyse the effects of romifidine on equine myocardial function. The major percentage change after application of romifidine for TDI measurements compared to the M-mode parameters indicate that the parameter myocardial velocity measured with TDI appeared to be the most sensitive parameter to document romifidine--induced changes on the myocardium.

Eight healthy female lambs underwent two-dimensional, M-mode and pulsed wave Doppler echocardiographic examination at 100 days of age and every three months thereafter over a 12-month period. The study was conducted under sedation with midazolam, butorphanol and constant rate infusion of intravenous propofol. Their growth phase was completed at about one year of age. All the echocardiographic parameters considered were significantly correlated with body weight and age class except for the left ventricular systolic and diastolic diameters. Functional indices were not correlated to body weight or age except for the E-point to septal separation distance (EPSS). Doppler-derived parameters were not influenced by independent variables. Transthoracic echocardiography can be considered an applicable method for cardiovascular research using a growing lamb animal model after appropriate adjustments for age and body size.

BACKGROUND: Pulsed wave (PW) Doppler echocardiography has become a routine non invasive cardiac diagnostic tool in most species. However, evaluation of intracardiac blood flow requires reference values, which are poorly documented in goats. The aim of this study was to test the repeatability, the variability, and to establish the reference values of PW measurements in healthy adult Saanen goats. Using a standardised PW Doppler echocardiographic protocol, 10 healthy adult unsedated female Saanen goats were investigated three times at one day intervals by the same observer. Mitral, tricuspid, aortic and pulmonary flows were measured from a right parasternal view, and mitral and aortic flows were also measured from a left parasternal view. The difference between left and right side measurements and the intra-observer inter-day repeatability were tested and then the reference values of PW Doppler echocardiographic parameters in healthy adult female Saanen goats were established. RESULTS: As documented in other species, all caprine PW Doppler parameters demonstrated a poor inter-day repeatability and a moderate variability. Tricuspid and pulmonary flows were best evaluated on the right side whereas mitral and aortic flows were best obtained on the left side, and reference values are reported for healthy adult Saanen goats. CONCLUSIONS: PW Doppler echocardiography allows the measurement of intracardiac blood flow indices in goats. The reference values establishment will help interpreting these indices of cardiac function in clinical cardiac cases and developing animal models for human cardiology research.

OBJECTIVE: Comparative echocardiography and blood flow measurements in different boid species. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 51 healthy snakes from seven different species were examined echocardiographically under standardized conditions. The heart and the great vessels were displayed using 2-D-ultrasonography. Pulsed-wave doppler technique measurements of the blood flow within the vessels were performed and results analyzed statistically. RESULTS: The examinations could be performed in non-sedated snakes in ventral recumbency. The best image quality was obtained using the ventrolateral coupling site. An examination scheme applicable to all examined snake species was established. Diversity in the anatomy of vessels could be detected in different snake species. A characteristic shape of the curve demonstrating the blood flow against time could be shown for the respective vessels. There were positive correlations between the size of the snakes and the absolute blood flow (total flow, systemic flow, pulmonary flow to body length: p<0.001; r=0.770; r=0.627; r=0.766; respectively to body mass: p<0.001; r=0.815; r=0.698; r=0.788), as well as negative correlations between the size of the animals and the blood flow relative to body mass (total flow, systemic flow, pulmonary flow to body length: p<0.001; r=-0.533; r=-0.512; r=-0.478; respectively total flow to body mass: p<0.001; r=-0.768). CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: When using standardized conditions, echocardiography in boid snakes is a useful diagnostic tool for the assessment of cardiac function. Reference values provided in this study serve as a basis for ultrasound examination in veterinary practice.

Univentricular atrioventricular (AV) connections are rare and complex congenital cardiac anomalies in which both AV valves communicate into a large, common (single) receiving chamber. The common chamber can be of left, right, or mixed ventricular morphology. Although well documented in people, reports of the double-inlet ventricle malformation are rare in the veterinary literature. This report provides description of an Arabian horse with a double-inlet univentricular connection of left ventricular type, a hypoplastic subpulmonary right ventricle, two muscular ventricular septal defects, and a stenotic mitral valve. Transthoracic Doppler echocardiography enabled antemortem diagnosis, and provided an assessment of intracardiac hemodynamics. The findings indicate that Doppler echocardiography is a useful, noninvasive tool for evaluating equine patients with congenital univentricular AV connections, such as a double-inlet left ventricle.

Pulsed-wave Doppler tissue imaging (pw-DTI) techniques allow the non-invasive assessment of myocardial dynamics. pw-DTI has demonstrated regional and global diastolic impairment in various forms of human and feline cardiomyopathy. We hypothesise that in geriatric cats with systemic diseases that have been linked to specific cardiomyopathies in human beings, the myocardial velocity profile will be altered when compared to either normal or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) cats; and that both age and heart rate have a significant affect upon pw-DTI velocities. The aims of this study were to determine whether the feline M-mode or myocardial velocity profile is altered in geriatric cats with disease states that have been linked to specific cardiomyopathies in humans when compared to normal geriatric cats or geriatric cats with HCM and to determine whether age or heart rate has a significant effect upon pw-DTI velocities within these groups of cats. Sixty-six cats aged 8 years or above were included in the study, and were divided as follows: Unaffected (n=8), basilar septal bulge (BSB) (17), HCM (14), hyperthyroid (HiT(4)) (12) and chronic renal failure (CRF) (15). Systolic blood pressure was normal in all the cats. pw-DTI systolic (S'), early (E') and late diastolic (A') velocities were assessed from standardised sites within the myocardium, and the relationships between these and disease group, age and heart rate were then assessed. In cats with HCM, the E' velocity was decreased at various sites. Conversely, the HiT(4) cats demonstrated increased S' velocities. The only site at which the age of the cat was significantly related to myocardial velocities was the S' velocity from the apical mid-septum. There were also significant positive relationships between heart rate and the magnitude of myocardial S', E' and A' velocities of radial motion and S' and A' velocities of longitudinal motion. pw-DTI detected diastolic dysfunction in untreated cats with HCM and increased systolic function in HiT(4) cats. The age of the cat was of little significance, whereas heart rate significantly influenced myocardial velocity profiles.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were (i) to evaluate echocardiographic findings and myocardial function including pulsed wave tissue Doppler imaging in dogs with naturally occurring dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and (ii) to investigate the clinical outcome and response to therapy in these dogs. METHODS: Two cases were retrospectively reviewed and three cases were prospectively evaluated including clinical findings, diagnostic test results (including standard Doppler echocardiography and pulsed wave tissue Doppler imaging), response to treatment and outcome. The two retrospective cases received no treatment. Other cases were treated with a beta-blocker. RESULTS: All dogs had a variable intensity left apical systolic murmur. Concentric left ventricular hypertrophy, systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve and scimitar-shaped left ventricular outflow tract Doppler flow profile were present in all cases. Pulsed wave tissue Doppler imaging interrogation of the interventricular septum revealed E'/A' reversal in all but one patient. Regression of left ventricular hypertrophy and total resolution of the dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction were observed in all cases. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Young dogs are affected with a possible terrier breed predisposition. Dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction may be distinguished from canine hypertrophic cardiomyopathy as progressive resolution of echocardiographic abnormalities was documented. Pulsed wave tissue Doppler imaging abnormalities provide further evidence for significant diastolic dysfunction associated with the hypertrophy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between velocities of pulmonary venous flow (PVF) and plasma concentrations of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) in healthy dogs. ANIMALS: 7 healthy Beagles. PROCEDURES: Dogs were anesthetized, intubated, and positioned in left lateral recumbency. Lactated Ringer's solution was infused (200 mL/kg/h) for 60 minutes via a cephalic vein. Transmitral flow and PVF velocities were measured echocardiographically by use of the apical 4-chamber view. Pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) and ANP concentrations were determined. RESULTS: IV infusion significantly increased heart rate and PCWP. Similarly, the ANP concentration significantly increased from baseline (before infusion of lactated Ringer's solution) values. Transmitral flow velocities were significantly increased, although the ratio of velocity of the flow during early ventricular diastole (E wave) to velocity of the atrial flow (A wave; E:A ratio) was unchanged. Regarding the PVF velocities, forward flow during ventricular systole (S wave) and retrograde flow during atrial contraction were significantly increased, whereas velocity of the forward flow during ventricular diastole (D wave) was unchanged. Ratio of the velocity of the S wave to velocity of the D wave was increased significantly, and this ratio was significantly correlated with PCWP or ANP concentration. However, the E:A ratio was not correlated with PCWP or ANP concentration. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: PVF velocities were strongly correlated with PCWP and plasma ANP concentration in clinically normal dogs. Therefore, PVF velocities may serve as a sensitive indicator and provide additional information for monitoring acute preloading conditions and estimating atrial filling abnormalities in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Associations of age and heart rate with blood flow velocities and durations assessed by pulsed-wave (PW) Doppler echocardiography in cats are incompletely understood. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effects of age and heart rate on blood flow velocities and durations of cardiac events obtained by PW Doppler echocardiography in healthy, nonsedated cats. ANIMALS: A convenience sample of 87 healthy, nonsedated cats aged 3 months to 19 years. METHODS: Prospective, observational study. PW Doppler measurements were obtained by echocardiography. Association of age and heart rate with PW Doppler values was evaluated by simple and multiple linear regressions and ANCOVA. RESULTS: Significant weak positive relationships were found between age and isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT) (R2= 0.18; P< or = .001), and between age and duration of pulmonary venous retrograde flow (R2= 0.07; P= .041). There was a significant weak negative relationship between age and transmitral peak early diastolic velocity (R2= 0.19; P< or = .001). Age and heart rate were significantly related to pulmonary venous peak systolic velocity (R2= 0.13; P= .008). Heart rate affected transmitral peak late diastolic velocity (R2= 0.11; P= .006). After adjusting for heart rate effect, the PW Doppler variables that were significantly different between age groups were transmitral peak early diastolic velocity (P< or = .001), duration of transmitral late diastolic flow (P< or = .001), IVRT (P< or = .001), and the ratio of duration of transmitral late diastolic flow to duration of pulmonary venous retrograde flow (P= .029). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: The association of several PW Doppler-derived variables and age and heart rate is weak and not clinically important.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between the myocardial performance index (MPI) determined by use of pulsed Doppler (PD) echocardiography and tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) in the response to volume overload-related changes in left ventricle (LV) performance. ANIMALS: 7 male Beagles. PROCEDURES: Dogs were anesthetized and intubated. A 6-F fluid-filled catheter was placed in the LV to measure LV peak systolic (LVPs) and LV end-diastolic (LVED) pressures. Preload was increased by IV infusion of lactated Ringer's solution (rate of 200 mL/kg/h for 60 minutes) into a cephalic vein. Transmitral flow velocities and aortic outflow were measured, and TDI velocities were obtained from the 4-chamber view. RESULTS: Acute volume overload induced a significant increase in heart rate, LVPs pressure, and LVED pressure, compared with baseline values. A significant decrease in the PD-MPI and TDI-MPI values and a significant correlation (r = 0.70) between PD-MPI and TDI-MPI were detected. The PD-derived A-wave velocity, ejection time, and isovolumic relaxation time (IRT) and the TDI-derived IRT, MPI, and ratio of the velocity of the E wave to the velocity of the ventricular portion of the E wave during early diastole had equal ability to predict LVED pressure (r(2) = 0.63). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The TDI-MPI was closely correlated with LV filling pressure and may be helpful in evaluating global cardiac function in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility, describe the techniques, and determine the reliability of transthoracic echocardiography for characterization of left atrial (LA) size and LA mechanical function in horses. ANIMALS: 6 healthy adult horses. PROCEDURES: Repeated echocardiographic examinations were performed independently by 2 observers in standing, unsedated horses by use of 2-dimensional echocardiography, pulsed-wave flow Doppler, and tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) techniques. Test reliability was determined by estimating measurement variability, within-day interobserver variability, and between-day inter- and intraobserver variability of all echocardiographic variables. Variability was expressed as the coefficient of variation (CV) and the absolute value below which the difference between 2 measurements will lie with 95% probability. RESULTS: Most echocardiographic variables of LA size had low overall variability (CV, < 15%). Among the 2-dimensional indices of LA mechanical function, area-based and volume-based ejection phase indices had moderate between-day variability (CV usually < 25%). Transmitral Doppler flow indices were characterized by low to high between-day variability (CV, 6% to 35%). The TDI wall motion velocities had high between-day variability (CV, > 25%), whereas most TDI-derived time intervals had low variability (CV, < 15%). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: LA size and mechanical function can be reliably assessed in standing, unsedated horses by use of 2-dimensional echocardiography, transmitral blood flow velocity profiles, and analyses of LA wall motion by use of TDI. These results may provide useful recommendations for echocardiographic assessment of LA size and function in horses.

The left ventricular (LV) Tei index (index of myocardial performance) has been demonstrated to be clinically useful in estimating comprehensive LV function, including the systolic and diastolic performances, in various human cardiac diseases. The purposes of this study were to validate the correlation between the LV Tei index and LV function obtained by cardiac catheterization in healthy dogs, and to evaluate the LV Tei index in dogs with naturally occurring mitral regurgitation (MR). In healthy dogs, the LV Tei index was significantly correlated with the LV peak +dP/dt (r = -0.89) and LV peak -dP/dt (r=0.87). The LV Tei index significantly increased in dogs with MR compared with normal dogs and significantly increased with progressively more severe clinical signs due to heart failure. The elevation of the LV Tei index in dogs with symptomatic MR appears to be associated with shortening of ejection time. The LV Tei index significantly increased with age and was not correlated with heart rate and body weight in normal dogs. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that the LV Tei index was measurable in dogs and not influenced by heart rate and body weight. The LV Tei index significantly increased with the progression of clinical signs in MR dogs. In particular, the elevation of the LV Tei index in dogs with symptomatic MR due to shortening of ejection time may suggest LV systolic dysfunction and the decrement of forward stroke volume.
