RESUMO
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the correlation between religiosity and alcohol use among adolescents with orofacial clefts. METHODS: Cross-sectional study, developed in a Brazilian public and tertiary hospital, between December 2021 and March 2022. Data collection was hybrid, and three instruments were used: Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Durel Religiosity Scale, and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. For statistical analysis, the following tests were used: χ2, Fisher's Exact, Mann-Whitney and Spearman's Correlation Coefficient, in addition to analyses of linear correlation strength and bivariate logistic regression. The significance level adopted for all tests was 5% (p≤0.05). RESULTS: 370 adolescents participated, with a mean age of 15.2 years (±1.8). Among them, 23 (5.4%) used alcohol riskly or harmfully, being more frequent among male adolescents (p=0.001), those of mixed race (p=0.046), attending high school (p=0.011), with no religion (p<0.001), or who did not attend religious services (p<0.001). Levels of organizational, non-organizational and intrinsic religiosity were significantly lower among adolescents with risky or harmful alcohol use (p=0.005; p<0.001 and p=0.002, respectively). There was a moderate correlation between risky or harmful alcohol use and non-organizational (r=0.31; p=0.002) and intrinsic (r=0.36; p<0.001) religiosity. Male adolescents (p<0.001; OR=6.58), closest in age to 18 years (p<0.001; OR=1.37), and non-practitioners of religion (p<0.001; OR=6. 48) presented higher odds of risky or harmful alcohol use. CONCLUSIONS: Adolescents with higher levels of organizational and intrinsic religiosity used less alcohol, while males, closest in age to 18 years, and non-practitioners of religion presented higher odds of using alcohol riskly or harmfully.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial clefts (OFCs) are among the most common birth defects (BD). In 2008, a series of improvements began in the Costa Rican Birth Defect Register Center (CREC). We aim to explore trends between 1996 and 2021. METHODS: A trend analysis of OFCs from 1996 to 2021 and a descriptive analysis of OFCs from 2010 to 2021 were performed based on data from the CREC, the national BD surveillance system. Prevalence at birth was calculated according to the type: cleft palate (CP), cleft lip with or without CP (CL ± P), and presentation (isolated, multiple non-syndromic, or syndromes). We used joinpoint regression to identify if a significant change in trend occurred; the average annual percent change (AAPC) was determined. Marginal means and prevalence ratios by subperiod (1996-2009 as referent and 2010-2021) were estimated using Poisson regression and compared using Wald's chi-square tests (α ≤.05). RESULTS: We found a significant AAPC for OFCs prevalence of +1.4: +0.6 for isolated, +2.9 for multiple non-syndromic, and +7.7 for syndromes (p < .05). When comparing the OFC's prevalence of the subperiod 2010-2021 (11.86 per 10,000) with 1996-2009 (9.36 per 10,000) the prevalence ratio was 1.3 (p < .01): 1.1 (p < .05) for isolated, 1.6 (p < .01) for multiple non-syndromic, and 3.3 (p < .01) for syndromes. The prevalence of OFCs from 2010 to 2021 was 9.1 for CL ± P and 2.8 for CP. Seventy-one percent of the OFCs were isolated, 22% multiple non-syndromic, and 7% syndromes. CONCLUSION: The trend in OFCs' prevalence is toward increasing, mainly due to improvements in the surveillance system.

OBJECTIVE: To use the bibliographic data of publications regarding the association between orofacial cleft (OC) and cancer to examine the implications of publication growth, co-citation, co-words, and authorship networks using bibliometric indicators and network visualization. METHODS: Bibliometric study analyzed documents related to the association between OC and cancer. Data were obtained in October 2023 from the Scopus, Pubmed, Web of Science. The search strategy was developed, and data obtained were imported into R ("bibliometrix") for analysis. Results: 70 documents were found from 1977 to 2023. Most were journal articles (90.0%) designed as case-control studies (42.8%). American Journal of Epidemiology was the most relevant source. The most cited document was Frebourg T, et al. (2006). Vieira A, Martelli-Junior were the most cited author. Most authors were affiliated to Brazil (University of Montes Claros) and United States (University of Pittsburgh). Research in this thematic has included children and adults of both sexes. Research trend points to gastric cancer, leukemia and breast cancer as the most investigated cancers in association to OC. CONCLUSION: This bibliometric analysis helps fill research gaps regarding the knowledge of the relationship between OC and cancer, providing some clues for selecting future research in this topic.

OBJECTIVE: To verify the prevalence and perform the clinical characterization of oral clefts in a sample of patients with trisomy of chromosome 18 in Southern Brazil. METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study, performed in a reference clinical genetic service in Southern Brazil. The initial sample consisted of 77 patients diagnosed in the neonatal period with trisomy 18 treated at the Clinical Genetics Service of a referral hospital at Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre (UFCSPA). The patients' diagnosis was confirmed by karyotype and care was provided during their stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital that is a reference in Southern Brazil for care for malformed patients. The period covered was from 1975 to 2020. RESULTS: During the study period, 77 patients diagnosed with trisomy 18 were treated, most of them in the ICU. Of these, 13 individuals were excluded due to incomplete data. The final sample consisted of 64 patients with an average age of 2.4 years of life, ranging from one day to 16 years old, the majority of whom were female. Regarding face dysmorphisms identified in the sample, three (4,68%) patients had cleft lip and two (3,11%) had cleft lip and palate. CONCLUSIONS: This study contributed to the recognition of the characteristics and prevalence of oral clefts in individuals with trisomy 18 in a sample of patients from Southern Brazil. In addition, we described the clinical alterations found in patients with oral clefts, as well as other associated comorbidities, such as cardiac, neurological and pulmonary comorbidities, as well as cranial and facial dysmorphisms.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial clefts (OFC) are the most common congenital malformation of the craniofacial skeleton. Attempts have been made to correlate the components of maternal diet as triggers for the development or prevention of OFC. OBJECTIVE: To analyze nutritional status as a predictive factor for the development of cleft lip and palate in an Amazonian population. METHODS: A total of 152 mothers within 3 months of delivery were interviewed for comparison: 51 mothers of children with nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate (CLP) (study group) and 101 mothers of children without OFC (control group). A food frequency questionnaire was used to assess maternal nutrition and to analyze the influence of macro- and micronutrients on the possible predisposition or protection for CLP. RESULTS: The study group showed higher percentage of lipid intake than did the control group (p = 0.01). Among the participants with no family history of OFC, the study group had a higher percentage of lipid intake (p = 0.002) and lower vegetable intake (p = 0.037). Maternal micronutrient intake among the participants with a positive family history was lower in the study group for vitamins B2 (p = 0.03), B5 (p = 0.036), E (p = 0.03), and folate (p = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS: Nutritional analysis indicated that higher maternal lipid intake increased the likelihood of having offsprings with nonsyndromic CLP. Moreover, families with a history of OFC and low maternal folate intake showed heightened risk of nonsyndromic CLP in their offsprings.

BACKGROUND: To investigate if maternal body mass index, diabetes and hypertension are associated with orofacial clefts. METHODS: Case-control study. Information from 53,188 live births with and without orofacial cleft registered at USA Vital Statistics Natality Birth Data between 2017 and 2021. Case group consisted of all affected live births diagnosed with orofacial clefts (13,297 cases). Comparison group consisted of 39,891 live births without clefts or any other congenital malformation. Information about orofacial cleft cases were compared with the comparison group. The unadjusted and adjusted Odds Ratios were estimated to evaluate the strength of association between mother's pre-pregnancy body mass index, maternal diabetes and hypertension and orofacial cleft occurrence, assuming a p valueâ<â0.05 and 95% confidence intervals (95% C.I.) for statistically significant differences. RESULTS: Mother's pre-pregnancy body mass index, maternal diabetes and maternal hypertension are conditions associated with an increased risk of orofacial cleft development in the child (ORâ=â1.08, pâ=â0.004, 95% C.I.â=â1.024-1.149; ORâ=â1.32, 95%, pâ=â0.000, 95% C.I.â=â1.202-1.444; and ORâ=â1.35, pâ=â0.000, 95% C.I.â=â1.239-1.484; respectively). Maternal ethnicity, sex of infant, and cigarette smoking pregnancy remained as covariates after adjustments in all logistic regression models. CONCLUSION: Due to the increased prevalence of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, and also to their association with congenital malformations, such as clefts, it is recommended that mothers planning to become pregnant to follow healthy habits, maintain healthy weight, and be screened for possible diabetes or hypertension prior to conception and early in pregnancy.

AIMS: This study aimed to characterize the prevalence of development defects of enamel (DDE) in patients with cleft based on the cleft phenotype and explore the relationship between surgical procedures and different types of DDE. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 290 standardized orthodontic documentation and medical records from a reference hospital were evaluated, which treated patients with: cleft lip (CL), cleft lip with alveolar bone involvement (CLa), cleft lip and palate (CLP), cleft palate (CP), cleft median (CM), and considering laterality as unilateral or bilateral. DDE was assessed using the Ghanim Index (2015). Information on surgical intervention periods was obtained from medical records. Statistical analyses were performed using prevalence ratio (PR) for DDE comparisons between cleft phenotypes and surgical procedures. RESULTS: The prevalence of DDE was 77.2%. Demarcated hypomineralization was associated with CP and CLP, while hypoplasia was associated with CLa, especially when bilateral. Hypoplasia was also associated with the labial adhesion surgery. CONCLUSION: Demarcated hypomineralization was the most common DDE in this population, and the cleft phenotype influenced the type of DDE manifested. The lip adhesion surgery increased the chances of hypoplasia manifestation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The type of DDE in patients with cleft depends on the cleft phenotype. Understanding this susceptibility enables the multidisciplinary team to monitor dental development, thus allowing early diagnosis and timely referral to the pediatric dentist and better prognoses.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiological profile and prevalence of live births with orofacial clefts in Brazil between 1999 and 2020. METHODS: Descriptive study. The population corresponded to live births with isolated orofacial clefts in Brazil registered in the Live Birth Information System between 1999 and 2020. Descriptive variables were selected according to their availability and grouped into socioeconomic and demographic, maternal and child health care, and biological variables. Data were submitted to a descriptive analysis using the Software for Statistics and Data Science (STATA). RESULTS: During the period, 33,699 children were born with orofacial clefts, and 82.1% (27,677) of them were isolated clefts. Regarding these cases, the majority were cleft lip and palate (9,619 or 34.7%), followed by cleft palate (9,442 or 34.1%), and by cleft lip (8,616 or 31.3%). CONCLUSIONS: Live births with orofacial clefts in Brazil were male, white, with birthweight ≥2,500 g and gestational age ≥37 weeks, born by cesarean section, and with Apgar scores ≥7. The cases were more frequent among mothers who were in their first and single pregnancy and had seven or more prenatal appointments. The mothers were 20 and 29 years old, had eight to ten years of study, and were single. The national prevalence of clefts was 4.24/10,000. The South and Southeast regions of Brazil had the highest prevalence, while the lowest prevalence was recorded in the Northeast and North regions. For the Federative Units, the highest and lowest prevalences were found, respectively, in Paraná and Acre.

BACKGROUND: Nonsyndromic orofacial clefts (NSOC) are the craniofacial most common congenital malformations. There are evidences that the nonsyndromic cleft palate (NSCP) development differs from other NSOC. However, most of the publications treat NSCP without considering that information. Furthermore, few studies focus on NSCP. The aim of this study was to describe epidemiological findings of patients with isolated NSCP in Brazil. METHODS: In this cross-sectional multicenter study, four reference Centers for treatment in three different Brazilian states was investigated. Data were obtained from clinical records of patients, between November 2021 and June 2022. Researched variables were sociodemographic, clinical characteristics and pregnancy and family history. Pearson's chi-square and ANOVA One-way tests were used for associations. RESULTS: Majority were female (58.1%), white (60.7%) with incomplete NSCP (61.2%). There was an association between complete NSCP and a positive history of medical problems during pregnancy (p = 0.016; 27.9%; OR: 1.94; 1.12-3.35). Systemic alterations were perceived in 40.6% of the sample with odds ratio for development of the complete type (OR: 1.21; 0.74-1.97). Higher OR was visualized in medication use during pregnancy (OR: 1.35; 0.76-2.37) and positive family history of oral cleft (OR: 1.44; 0.80-2.55). Dental and surgical care was associated with higher age groups (p < 0.050). CONCLUSIONS: NSCP was most prevalent in white skin color female. Complete NSCP is associated with medical problems during pregnancy. Medication use during pregnancy and positive family history of oral cleft increase the chance of developing complete NSCP.

Orofacial clefts are one of the most common birth defects and the most common craniofacial malformation worldwide. The most common orofacial clefts (OFCs) are congenital cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL ± P) and isolated cleft palate (CP). The incidence of OFCs varies depending on region and ethnicity; however, it affects approximately 1 in 600 newborns worldwide. In most cases, CL ± P and CP are multifactorial congenital malformations, where both exogenous and genetic factors play an important role. The objective of this study was to describe the frequency of potential risk factors associated with the development of CL ± P and CP in Mexican population. Patients were referred for multisystemic treatment, from private and public institutions in different regions of the country (center, north, and south). Sociodemographic information, prenatal and parental history were obtained through direct interviews with the patients or the patients' mothers in the case of underaged patients. Referred patients were invited to participate in the study. No interventions were applied for this study. The relationship between these factors and the prevalence of CL ± P and CP was studied. A total of 554 patients were included, the majority with CLP (30% to 7%), statistically significant differences were found for folic acid ( P = 0.02) consumption. Familial aggregation did not reach statistical significance for first-degree family members ( P = 0.34) but was significant for second-degree family members ( P = 0.007). More risk factors associated with CL ± P and CP may still be unknown, prompting more epidemiological research and research in other little-studied areas, such as; specific genetic factors in Mexican population.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and factors associated with smoking in adolescents with cleft lip and/or palate. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study, developed in a Brazilian public and tertiary hospital between November 2018 and August 2019. Adolescents aged between 12 and 19 years old, previously submitted to cheiloplasty and/or palatoplasty surgeries were included. Data collection was carried out through interviews, guided by questionnaires referring to sociodemographic issues, use and factors associated with smoking. For statistical analysis, Fisher's Exact Test, Chi-square, Student's t test and bivariate logistic regression were used, all with a significance level of 5% (p≤0.05). RESULTS: 102 adolescents participated. The prevalence of smoking was 20.6% (n=21). Having cleft lip and palate was associated with smoking (p=0.012). The bivariate analysis showed that not dating (p=0.001; OR=0.19) and owning a home (p=0.032; OR=0.33) were configured as protective factors for the act of being a smoker, while believing that smoking facilitates interaction with young people or with the group of friends (p=0.043; OR=2.95), having friends who use alcoholic beverages (p=0.002; OR=8.40), having friends who use drugs, except cigarettes (p=0.002; OR=5.33), use alcoholic beverages (p<0.001; OR=10.67) and sexual initiation (p<0.001; OR=7.00), were associated with being a smoker. CONCLUSIONS: From the knowledge of the profile of adolescents most vulnerable to tobacco use, it is possible to plan and implement educational and preventive actions.

OBJECTIVE(S): To estimate nutritional status in a large cohort of infants with orofacial clefts in the US, overall and by cleft type from birth to 6 months of age. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional study in infants with orofacial clefts by examining growth by month between birth and 6 months of age. Infants with at least one weight measurement at a single US regional tertiary care pediatric hospital with an interdisciplinary cleft team between 2010 and 2020 were included. We calculated the average weight-for-age z scores and weight-for-length z scores. We calculated the proportion of infants underweight and wasting with z scores below -2 SDs monthly from birth to 6 months of age. We used t tests to compare the distribution of weight for age z-score and weight for length z-score among children with orofacial clefts to a normal distribution. RESULTS: We included 883 infants with orofacial clefts. Compared with expected proportion of underweight infants (2.3%), a larger proportion of infants with orofacial clefts were underweight between birth and 1 month (10.6%), peaking between 2 and 3 months (27.1%), and remaining high between 5 and 6 months (16.3%). Compared with the expected proportion of infants with wasting (2.3%), a higher proportion of infants with orofacial clefts experienced wasting between birth and 1 month (7.3%), peaking between 2 and 3 months (12.8%), and remaining high between 5 and 6 months (5.3%). Similar findings were observed for all cleft types and regardless of comorbidities. CONCLUSION(S): A substantial proportion of infants with orofacial clefts compared with normative peers have malnutrition in the first 6 months of life in the US.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to correlate the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia and breastfeeding with orofacial clefts in children. DESIGN: Data on the participant profile, presence and type of the cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P), and records on anemia and breastfeeding were collected from patients' charts, and submitted to statistical analysis by χ2 test (p < .05; software SPSS 23.0). RESULTS: Two-hundred and ten files were divided according to: CL/P presence (cleft group; n = 132) or absence (control group; n = 78). Group CL/P was subdivided according to the type of cleft: CL/P-I (cleft lip; n = 35); CL/P-II (cleft lip and palate; n = 45); CL/P-III (cleft palate; n = 43); and CL/P-IV (rare orofacial clefts; n = 9). Group CL/P had significantly more records on anemia (p = .016) and fewer records on breastfeeding (P<.01) than controls. More records on anemia occurred in CL/P-II (p = .004) and CL/P-IV (p = .006) than the control group. The comparison among the orofacial cleft types regarding the anemia records showed no statistically significant differences (p = .123). Group CL/P-I had more records on breastfeeding than the other cleft types (p < .01). CONCLUSIONS: Thus, it is suggested that the breastfeeding process is more complex, and the history of anemia is more frequent, in children with cleft lip and palate or rare orofacial clefts than in children without clefts.

Determine the population prevalence and trends of cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) by department for Colombia in the period 2009 to 2015.Prevalence study based on Individual Registry of Health Services in general population from 2009 to 2015. All people diagnosed with CL/P were included for all ages, type of diagnosis, and any type of health services in the mentioned period. The prevalence was calculated by period and point for each year, for each department and according to the type of cleft. Stationarity on time series was evaluated using (Dickey-Fuller) and (Phillips-Perron). A trend test was applied to estimate whether the increase in prevalence was significant in the period. The trend test used was a Poisson regression.A total 15â 225 people with CL/P were identified, where 53.3% were men. The national period prevalence of CL/P is 3.37 per 10â 000 with upward trend (prevalence ratio = 1.34, P = .05) and nonstationary behavior. The national period prevalence of cleft lip is 0.93 per 10â 000, cleft palate 1.17 per 10â 000, and cleft lip and palate (CLP) 1.26 per 10â 000, where CLP is subclassify into unilateral CLP (0.83 per 10â 000) and bilateral CLP (0.43 per 10â 000). At the departmental level, the highest CL/P prevalence is Guaviare (11.2), followed by Guainía (8.4) and the lowest Quindío (0.49).In Colombia, the national period prevalence of CL/P is 3.37 per 10â 000 with upward trend at national level indicates an increase in prevalence from 2009 to 2015. The 77% of the total CL/P population are infant or adolescent. Geographically, the central region has the highest availability of technologies.

OBJECTIVE: To describe trends in cases and prevalence at birth rates of cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) in Mexico between 2003 and 2019. DESIGN: Ecological study. SETTING: Multiple data sources systematically collected into a national epidemiological surveillance data warehouse. PARTICIPANTS: National Live Birth Information System. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Both cases and prevalence at birth rates of CL/P in Mexico within a 17-year period were used as dependent variables. RESULTS: At the national level there were 23â 184 new cases of CL/P (average of 1364 per year) in the 32 states of Mexico, with an average prevalence at birth rate of 0.53 per 1000 live births. The states with the highest prevalence at birth rates of CL/P during the period were Hidalgo (1.59) and Jalisco (1.32), while the states with the lowest rates were Nayarit (0.22) and Durango (0.29). A slight decrease in both cases (z = -2.41, P = .016) and prevalence at birth rates (z = -2.58, P = .010) of CL/P was observed at the national level. States such as Durango, Puebla, Chiapas, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Mexico City, State of Mexico, Coahuila and Jalisco showed a clear downward trend (P < .05) in their prevalence at birth of CL/P between 2003 and 2019, while in Hidalgo its trend was upward (P = .05). Significant differences by sex and region were observed (P < .05). CONCLUSION: Some states consistently had the highest or lowest prevalence of CL/P. Decreasing trends in the overall prevalence at birth rates were observed. More detailed, epidemiological studies are necessary to adequately characterize CL/P in the Mexican population.

Aim: To assess the prevalence of cleft lip and/or cleft palate (CL/P) and associated variables in neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care units (ICU). Methods: Medical charts for neonates born and admitted to the ICU between 2012 and 2018 were reviewed. Obstetric and neonatal variables were collected by a trained researcher. In the case group, all neonates with CL/P were included. The control group was formed by matching sex, prematurity and month of birth using random number generation. Neonates with congenital malformations were excluded from the control group. Adjusted logistic regression was used (p<0.05). Results: The prevalence of CL/P was 0.43% (n=15). Five cases were excluded, as pairing was not possible. Twenty neonates were included in the control group. In the final multivariate model, CL/P was only associated with increased maternal age. For each year of increase in maternal age, neonates had a 35.2% higher chance of presenting CL/P (95% confidence interval: 1.0211.792). Conclusions: Higher maternal age was associated with higher occurrence of CL/P in neonates admitted to the ICU. No other neonatal or maternal independent variables were associated with CL/P. Due to missing data, interpretation of study results must be approached with caution

SUMMARY: Palate formation occurs between the fifth and eleventh week of intrauterine life as a result of the union of the primary and secondary palate. On the other hand, the formation of the upper lip occurs between the fifth and sixth week of development, and is configured in its middle part by the fusion of the medial and lateral nasal processes, at the expense of the maxillary processes. The prevalence of cleft lips and / or cleft palate varies according to the different ethnic groups, with figures ranging from 0.7 to 1.1 cases per 1000 live births. The aim of this work was to carry out a literature review on epidemiological aspects, molecular and environmental genetic mechanisms that influence the occurrence of cleft lip, cleft palate and its embriology. The literature search was carried out in the databases PUBMED, SCOPUS, SPRINGER, SCIENCEDIRECT using the English terms "cleft lip and palate", "cleft lip", "cleft palate" and "embryology". Inclusion criteria included studies carried out in humans and animals, published between 2015 and 2021. The search yielded a total of 407 works, of which after a filter by title and abstract, a total of 38 articles remained, in which a text analysis was carried out complete to finally select 26 articles that cover genetic-molecular, environmental, epidemiological and syndromic topics. In addition, 6 documents associated with textbooks and scientific articles were incorporated by manual search, without considering the inclusion criterion of time. This review describes the strong association between oral fissures and mutations of genes Msx1, sonic hedgehog, bone morphogenetic proteins and fibroblast growth factor during migration of neural crest cells and palate shaping and formation. Lack of folic acid during palae development dar and the presence of hypoxia due to exposure to smoke, are the environmental factors most frequently observed in orofacial malformations.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between periconceptional environmental exposures and the occurrence of cleft lips and palates. METHODS: This case-control study analyzed 150 mothers of children with cleft lips and palates living in the same city as 250 mothers whose children did not present with this malformation (controls). Environmental exposure data were gathered through a questionnaire (Latin American Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations methodology). RESULTS: Multivariate analysis revealed that monthly income below minimum wage, having another malformed child, other diseases in the first gestational trimester (urinary infection), use of pesticides in home gardens, and pesticide use in farms close to the home were risk factors associated with the malformation, whereas taking vitamins was a protective factor. CONCLUSION: Maternal and paternal exposure to pesticides is associated with cleft lip and palate in Mato Grosso State, Brazil.

This study's objective was to compare the total and outside the cleft prevalence of dental anomalies (DA) between patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) and a control group. This retrospective cross-sectional study was done under a case-control design. The case group consisted of 192 non-syndromic patients with complete CLP, while the control group included 411 patients. All subjects had orthopantomography, intra, and extraoral photographs. The prevalence of dental agenesis, supernumerary teeth, impacted teeth, dental transposition, and microdontia were compared using a chi-squared test (P < .05). Next, a second test was made, but only the anomalies outside the cleft were considered for this study. Total prevalence was 89.1% for cases, and 20.9% for controls (P < .01). The prevalence of each DA was significantly higher for the case group. In the analysis of DAs outside the cleft, the total prevalence was still significantly associated (P < .01); however, only dental agenesis was statistically significant (P < .01). Further analysis found that a high rate of upper premolar absence (P < .01) could explain this event. Patients with CLP have a higher prevalence of DAs compared to controls. After considering only the DAs outside the cleft, the total prevalence remains significantly higher. However, this phenomenon is explained mainly by the elevated prevalence of upper premolars' agenesis. This study's results suggest that environmental factors are behind the high prevalence of DAs in subjects with CLP.
