OBJECTIVE: This article describes the evaluation of a system-wide program to enhance new graduate nurse resident (NGNR) experience, enculturation, and commitment to the organization. BACKGROUND: Structured nurse residency programs support NGNR transition to the work environment and increase retention and organizational commitment. METHODS: The study used a descriptive, comparative design measuring NGNR perceptions of affective commitment, job satisfaction, job stress, and other variables over 3 times from baseline to 24 months. RESULTS: Findings demonstrated a reduction in affective commitment and an increase in nursing stress from baseline to 12 and 24 months of employment. The highest mean in intent to leave occurred at 12 months, highlighting the vulnerability of the NGNR at that time. CONCLUSIONS: Nurse leaders must consider resources supporting NGNRs beyond the traditional 12 months to ensure retention and organizational commitment, thereby decreasing intent to leave.

The health crisis situation we have experienced caused by the SARSCoV-2 virus  has changed our daily life in numerous aspects, including those related to  training (undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education, etc). Training  activities, conferences, lectures, face-to-face workshops were suspended until  the Health Situation was over. Alternatives to face-to-face training were needed  to guarantee the continuity of these activities. Online training, teaching and  evaluation emerged as a relatively fast, simple, operational and flexible solution. Universities and faculties promoted online teaching through virtual  classes. The Spanish Society of Hospital Pharmacy supported this initiative by  signing an agreement with the Board of Deans and Chancellors of Pharmacy to  make it possible for undergraduate students to continue their studies and  supervised practices in hospital pharmacy departments. Specialized training was  affected. Pharmacy residency programs were significantly modified by hospital  pharmacies to be able to provide the new clinical and research activities  required, everyday, by the pandemic situation. Postgraduate and residency  training were also negatively affected. Again, online activities made up for  restrictions to face-to-face teaching and training. The Spanish Society of Hospital Pharmacy promoted continuing education and provided updated information on  the SARS-CoV-2 virus through its website. Thus, numerous virtual sessions,  lectures and webinars have been held, and high-quality material was offered to  provide up-todate knowledge, on the pharmacological management of patients  with COVID-19. Online teaching and education has demonstrated to be an  invaluable tool for hard times. During the lockdown, technology has kept us  closer and has emerged as an ally. Many of us have found a new means of  communication, information, and training. The Spanish Society of Hospital  Pharmacy has substantially contributed to make it possible.


La situación de crisis sanitaria que hemos vivido con motivo de la pandemia causada por el virus SARS-CoV-2 ha cambiado nuestro día a día en muchos aspectos, incluidos los relacionados con nuestra formación (de  pregrado, especializada, continuada, etc.). Se suspendieron las actividades docentes, congresos, charlas y talleres presenciales hasta la  resolución de la situación sanitaria. Era necesario buscar alternativas a la  presencialidad que garantizasen la continuidad de estas actividades. La  formación, docencia y evaluación en línea se presentaba como una solución  relativamente rápida, sencilla, operativa y flexible. Desde las universidades y  facultades se promovía la docencia en remoto con material docente y clases  virtuales. La Sociedad Española de Farmacia Hospitalaria ha facilitado esta  iniciativa al firmar un convenio con la Conferencia de Decanos de Farmacia para  que estudiantes matriculados en Prácticas tuteladas, y en formación en un  servicio de farmacia hospitalaria, pudieran seguir con sus estudios de pregrado. La formación especializada resultó afectada. Los planes de formación de los farmacéuticos internos residentes requirieron cambios  importantes por la necesidad de dar respuesta desde los servicios de farmacia a  las nuevas actividades asistenciales y de investigación que se producían, cada día de manera cambiante, en la situación de pandemia. La formación continuada de los especialistas (y residentes) quedó también alterada. De nuevo, las  actividades en línea permitieron salvar, en cierto grado, el déficit de actividades  docentes y formativas. A través de su página web, la Sociedad Española de  Farmacia Hospitalaria promovió la formación continuada y el seguimiento de la  actualidad sobre la pandemia por el virus SARS-CoV-2; organizó sesiones  virtuales, jornadas y talleres en formato webinar y proporcionó material de alta  calidad que facilitaba el conocimiento, en tiempo real, de la gestión del  tratamiento farmacológico en pacientes con COVID-19. La aplicación de la  docencia y formación en línea ha demostrado ser una herramienta  imprescindible en tiempos complicados, como los vividos. Durante el  confinamiento, la tecnología nos ha acercado y se ha convertido en la gran  aliada. También ha supuesto el descubrimiento, para muchos de nosotros, de  una nueva manera de comunicarnos, informarnos y formarnos. La Sociedad  Española de Farmacia Hospitalaria ha colaborado de manera importante a que  esto sea así.

RESUMO

Health professions education is increasingly creating learning experiences after one's entry-level practice degree. Such experiences include residency and fellowship experiences for health professions practitioners. This review of residency and fellowship programs across several health professions includes the development of residency programs and the implications these developments have on occupational therapy. The analysis across health professions includes medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, and occupational therapy. This thorough analysis can help guide the development of occupational therapy fellowships. This background provides a foundation to focus on the implications for emerging fellowships within occupational therapy. The findings can be utilized to assist in the development of new successful fellowship programs.

The Youth Enjoy Science (YES) Program at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) R25-funded training grant, designed to increase the pipeline of underrepresented minority (URM) students entering college and pursuing biomedical research and health care careers in the Cleveland Metropolitan and surrounding school districts. The three components of the program include: Learn to Beat Cancer, engaging middle school students and their families; Research to Beat Cancer, designed for high school students and college undergraduates; and Teach to Beat Cancer, focused on enhancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teaching capacity among high school teachers. This study focuses on Research to Beat Cancer, which, in 2018 enrolled 36 URM students as paid summer scholars. Students were assigned to a faculty mentor, were taught laboratory safety, responsible conduct of research and the scientific method, and then immersed in full-time laboratory cancer research during an eight-week period. Twice each week, students participated in Lunch and Learn Seminars where faculty members provided combined motivational and scientific guidance lectures. In a capstone poster session at the end of the program, students presented their research to peers, medical and graduate students, family members, faculty, community members and leaders. Students' perceptions of the program were reported using descriptive statistics and qualitative thematic analyses. Twenty-four of the 2018 YES students (67%) and 19 (53%) mentors completed the online post-program survey. Opportunity was a major qualitative theme from student and mentor responses. Future research will investigate the long-term impacts of YES, including college enrollment.

BACKGROUND: A joint practicum gives library and information science (LIS) students the opportunity to compare two health sciences libraries' structures and workflows. The goal of this case report is to describe how a joint health sciences practicum can help LIS students and recent graduates develop skills that may be beneficial for their future positions in health sciences or other libraries.Case Presentation: Six participants in a joint health sciences library practicum underwent two interviews: the first interview focused on their practicum experiences, and the second interview sought to determine whether the participants had found employment and were using any skills in their new positions that they acquired during their practicums. Participants gave mostly positive feedback regarding their practicum experiences and expressed openness to applying for health sciences library positions. Although the participants who found employment did not work in health sciences libraries, their practicum projects served as supporting materials for their job applications, and they were using the skills they had gained from their practicums in their new positions. CONCLUSIONS: While most joint practicum participants were not working in a health sciences library, the practicum was beneficial to their new careers. This case report highlights that a joint health sciences practicum program can be beneficial in showing LIS students different approaches to health sciences librarianship.

Objetivo: Conocer el grado el interés de los residentes en áreas formativas transversales de Enfermería Familiar y Comunitaria (EFyC) al inicio de su formación. Valorar el desarrollo de actividades comunitarias en los centros de salud y determinar el grado de satisfacción de los residentes con la formación recibida y actividades realizadas. Método: Se presenta una experiencia sobre metodología docente en salud pública y comunitaria en los residentes de EFyC desde el 2014 hasta el 2017. La formación se dividió en 3módulos formativos de 21h y se completó con 2actividades de campo: un programa de Educación para la Salud (EpS) y un mapeo de activos en la zona básica de salud (ZBS). Se cumplimentó un cuestionario de satisfacción del curso y de las actividades realizadas. Resultado: Durante este período se formaron 27 residentes. El 86,9% consideró la formación en atención comunitaria como muy necesaria. Se realizaron 26 programas de EpS y 17 mapeos de activos de sus ZBS. Con respecto a la satisfacción de la formación, se obtuvo una media global de 4,5 ± 0,1 sobre 5. Conclusiones: Los resultados evidencian un alto grado de interés en atención comunitaria, así como una valoración muy alta sobre las actividades realizadas y la formación recibida. La formación en salud comunitaria durante el período de residencia es un elemento esencial para integrar estas competencias en el rol profesional. Resulta imprescindible la dedicación por parte de las Unidades Docentes en el impulso en esta competencia, capacitando a los residentes en la integración del abordaje biopsicosocial, la orientación comunitaria y el trabajo en equipo en Atención Primaria


Objective: To determine the interest of nursing residents in the training areas of Family and Community Nursing (EFyC) at the beginning of their training, to evaluate community activities in health centres and to determine satisfaction with the training received and activities carried out. Method: We present the experience of training in the public and community health competencies of EFyC Nursing from 2014 to 2017 in a multiprofessional teaching unit. The training was divided into 3 theoretical modules. The training was completed with 2 activities: the design and development of a health education programme and an asset mapping in the basic health area. A questionnaire was completed on satisfaction with the course and the activities carried out. Result: During this period, 27 residents received training. As part of the training process, 26 health education programmes and 17 asset mappings were conducted in accredited health centres. The areas of intervention addressed were: lifestyles, life transitions and health problems. The overall satisfaction with the course was 4.5 ±.1 out of 5. Conclusions: The results show a high degree of interest in this area, as well as high evaluation of the activities carried out and the training received. Training in community health and health education during the period of residence is essential to include these competencies in the professional role. The dedication and involvement of the multiprofessional teaching units is essential in the development of these competences, training the residents through the integration of a biopsychosocial approach, community health and teamwork in primary care

RESUMO

The purpose of this integrative literature review was to identify commonalities among nurse residency programs deployed for greater than 3 years, showing improved job retention and satisfaction. The Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Model guided this review. Successful, sustainable nurse residency programs have a strong foundation with committed leadership to support transition; a structured program with defined outcomes to promote clinical competence, safe patient care, and professional development; and an evaluation process to guide continual improvement and meet organizational needs.

RESUMO

Accreditation of transition to practice (TTP) programs are rapidly increasing. A review was completed on 13 TTP programs, accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center Practice Transition Accreditation Program. The review found six benefits of TTP accreditation that can translate into value for organizations. Nursing professional development practitioners should seek accreditation for TTP programs to elevate the potential for funding from national agencies.

PURPOSE: Results from an evaluation of a 12-month postgraduate Veterans Health Administration (VHA) residency in primary care for physician assistants (PAs). METHODS: Descriptive and open-ended data were collected to describe the experience of faculty and trainees participating in the first 3 years of this pilot residency. Quantitative data were summarized using descriptive statistics. Text data were transcribed and reviewed for common themes across residency sites and respondents. Data were collected at 2 time points-the end of the first year and the beginning of year 4. RESULTS: In the first 3 years of the program, 18 residents were enrolled at 6 sites, with 89% completing the residency. At the second time point, 8 more residents were enrolled. Residents were primarily female (69%). Of the residents completing the program, 56% obtained VHA employment, and 75% of the current residents planned to work for the VHA upon completing the program. Program infrastructure, such as written curriculum, a dedicated administrative staff, and written evaluations for trainees, was more common at the second time point. Recurring themes included the importance of establishing relationships with potential applicants, preceptors, medical center leadership, and trainees to support the program and the importance of securing resources such as space and protected time for faculty. CONCLUSIONS: Although postgraduate residency programs are less common for PAs than for some other health professions, our data suggest that a one-year residency can provide training for new graduates to help solidify their clinical experience and facilitate their transition to practice.

The purpose of this article is to describe the process from inception to accreditation of a post-baccalaureate nurse residency program between a VA Healthcare center and a university school of nursing so that other nurse educators can benefit from its development. Establishing a nurse residency program bridges the gap between education and practice and provides support to graduate nurses entering the workforce.

RESUMO

Nurse residency programs are important tools to improve retention of new graduate nurses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an institutionally developed nurse residency program. Data on 20 cohorts (N = 241) of graduate nurses and best practices for residency programs were examined. Strategies to improve this nurse residency program were identified. Data showed a critical loss of new graduate nurses between Years 1 and 2 of employment.

RESUMO

The purpose of this literature review was to explore evaluation instruments used by nurse residency programs to evaluate outcomes. The 15 studies found yielded 26 instruments, and all instruments were subjective, dated, and varied in how they were used. Nursing professional development practitioners should use a combination of reliable, valid, and current evaluation methods to appraise their nurse residency programs in order to demonstrate program quality and effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Although Role Emerging Placements (REP) are now a common feature in pre-registration occupational therapy curricula, there is a need to expand the understanding of the impact of this experience on employability, practice and career path of qualified occupational therapists. METHOD: A case finding online survey was used to create a purposive sample for Thematic Analysis of semi-structured interviews with practising occupational therapists from one UK Masters' level pre-registration occupational therapy program. RESULTS: The case finding survey (n = 19) led to recruitment of six participants to be interviewed. The qualitative findings reflected the impact of a REP experience on occupational therapists' employability, practice and career path. The complementary features of the more traditional placement and the role emergent type of placement were considered as being useful and beneficial to qualified practice regardless of setting. However, the REP additionally, had an internal and outward impact. Internally, the therapist gains a passion for occupation-focussed practice and builds confidence to promote both self and the profession. Outwardly, the therapist can offer extra skills in qualified practice, particularly in innovative service development and delivery, thereby offering added value for employability. CONCLUSION: A REP experience as an occupational therapy student, can develop additional skills for qualified professional practice than traditional practice placements alone. The impact of such a placement matches with the 'Generation Y' traits of young adults who are now starting to emerge into training and the work place, translates well into a variety of working environments and lasts into career development. The placement model of occupation-focussed project development and the less apprentice style learning of a REP may be influential, and could be a suitable model within traditional placements.

In 2009 a Consensus Conference of experts in the field of spiritual care and palliative care recommended the inclusion of Board-certified professional chaplains with at least 1,600 hours of clinical pastoral education as members of palliative care teams. This study evaluates a clinical pastoral education residency program's effectiveness in preparing persons to provide spiritual care for those with serious illness and in increasing the palliative care team members' understanding of the chaplain as part of the palliative care team. Results showed chaplain residents felt the program prepared them to provide care for those with serious illness. It also showed that chaplain residents and palliative care team members view spirituality as an integral part of palliative care and see the chaplain as the team member to lead that effort. Suggested program improvements include longer palliative care orientation period, more shadowing with palliative care team members, and improved communication between palliative care and the chaplain residents.
