RESUMO

An elastic tape sling successfully maintained reduction of a craniodorsal right coxofemoral luxation in a woodchuck (Marmota monax). No complications were encountered during the 14 days that the sling was in place. The animal remained normal through the following 8 mo.

RESUMO

A 4-year-old castrated male Miniature Horse was evaluated because of severe right hind limb lameness of 5 days' duration. The diagnosis of craniodorsal luxation of the right coxofemoral joint was made by physical examination and radiographic imaging. Closed reduction was attempted but was unsuccessful. Surgical reduction was successfully performed, using toggle pin, synthetic capsular reconstruction, and trochanteric transposition techniques. No postoperative complications were observed. Follow-up 26 months after surgery revealed no recurrence of the luxation and no evidence of lameness. These surgical techniques are used successfully for repair of coxofemoral luxations in small animals. To our knowledge, there has been no report of these techniques attempted in horses. These surgical techniques may have merit for the treatment of coxofemoral luxations in small equine patients.

RESUMO

A nine-year-old Shetland pony gelding, with a history of recurrent upward fixation of the patella, suddenly developed severe lameness in its right hindlimb. A luxation of the coxofemoral joint was diagnosed by a clinical and radiographic examination. The initial treatment of the luxation by closed reduction was not maintained, and the limb was placed in an Ehmer sling for four days after a second closed reduction. This allowed the femoral head to remain in the acetabulum, although a persistent subluxation remained, presumably owing to a rupture of the round ligament. The pony remained comfortable at pasture for over two years after the reduction, until osteoarthritis of the coxofemoral joint caused it to become severely lame and it had to be euthanased.

RESUMO

Complications of external coaptation of fractures include delayed and nonunion healing from lack of adequate fracture stability, pressure and rub sores, leg swelling, dermatitis, joint laxity or stiffness, cast or splint breakage, and refracture. Most of the complications are a result of improper application of the coaptation device or poor management of the patient. Early recognition and treatment of complications are needed to minimize their effect. The number of complications resulting from external coaptation can be minimized by proper application of the cast or splint.
