RESUMO

We investigated previously under explored cold aquatic environments of Andean Patagonia, Argentina. Oily sheens similar to an oil spill are frequently observed at the surface of water in creeks and small ponds in these places. Chemical analysis of a water sample revealed the occurrence of high concentrations of iron and the presence of a free insoluble indigoidine-derived pigment. A blue pigment-producing bacterium (strain EB) was isolated from the water sample and identified as Vogesella sp. by molecular analysis. The isolate was able to produce indigoidine and another derived-pigment (here called cryoindigoidine) with strong antifreeze properties. The production of the pigments depended on the cell growth at cold temperatures (below 15 °C), as well as on the attachment of cells to solid surfaces, and iron limitation in the media. The pigments produced by strain EB showed an inhibitory effect on the growth of diverse microorganisms such as Candida albicans, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In addition, pigmented cells were more tolerant to freezing than non-pigmented cells, suggesting a role of cryoindigoidine/indigoidine as a cold-protectant molecule. The possible roles of the pigments in strain EB physiology and its interactions with the iron-rich environment from which the isolate was obtained are discussed. Results of this study suggested an active role of strain EB in the investigated iron-oxidizing ecosystem.

BACKGROUND: Group EF-4 bacteria make up part of the normal flora of the oral cavity of dogs and cats. Few reports have been published on the incidence of human infections by this group of bacteria and these are associated with animal bite or scratch. Two cases of infections by CDC group EF-4 by dog bite were diagnosed in 1996 by the Bacteriology Laboratory of the authors' hospital. These cases are herein described and the biochemical analysis and profile of sensitivity of this little known group of bacteria evaluated. METHODS: Two clinical cases of infection by CDC group EF-4a by dog bite are described. Identification of the bacteria was performed by conventional biochemical tests and quantitative antibiotic sensitivity to 12 antibiotics was carried out by the seried broth macrodilution method. RESULTS: The two strains isolated corresponded to biovar "a" of group EF-4 being sensitive to: ampicillin, ceftriaxone, aminoglycosides, chloramphenicol, rifamipicin, TMS and ciprofloxacin, intermediate sensitivity to erythromycin and were resistant to cefalotine, oxacillin and vancomycin. With respect to penicillin, one of the strains was sensitive and the other presented intermediate sensitivity. Neither of the strains produced beta lactamase. CONCLUSIONS: Although Pasteurella sp. is usually considered in dog bite wounds, the possible presence of group EF-4 should be taken into account since the sensitivity of both microorganisms against penicillin and cefalotin, which are effective against Pasteurella but less active against group EF-4 bacteria differ.

In a prospective study, 36 (35%) of 103 patients had early recurrence of acute otitis media. We wished to identify risk factors for early recurrences (those recurring within 1 month of initial diagnosis) and to determine if the second episode was caused by the same pathogen (relapse) or a new organism (reinfection). When the same bacterial species was recovered in both episodes, Streptococcus pneumoniae were serotyped and Haemophilus influenzae were classified by biotypes and by electrophoretic pattern of the outer membrane proteins. Twenty-nine patients underwent tympanocentesis at the time of the recurrent episode. In 13, no pathogen was recovered either initially or at the time of recurrence. Twelve (75%) of the remaining 16 patients had reinfection; only four (25%) had relapse. Thus, early recurrences of acute otitis media were more often caused by a new organism. This finding suggests that underlying susceptibility to middle ear infection is important in the development of recurrent otitis media. Pediatricians should not assume that early recurrences are necessarily the result of failure of initial treatment. Tympanocentesis may be helpful in this setting to aid in choosing appropriate antibiotic therapy.
