RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Conidiobolomycoses (Conidiobolus coronatus fungal infections) are rare and potentially severe infections prevalent in the tropics. The disease starts in the facial sinus and evolves as a subcutaneous tumor on the mid face OBSERVATION: A 19-year-old female patient from Burkina Faso presented with an acquired nasal deformation having evolved for a few months, associated to bilateral nasal obstruction. The patient had no medical or surgical history. The pathological analysis of the surgical exeresis allowed diagnosing a C. coronatus infection. DISCUSSION: The C. coronatus lives in decaying vegetation in hot and humid climates. It is a potential human pathogen that infects immunocompetent patients presenting with micro-wounds of the sinus and nasal mucosa. Hundred cases have been reported. The management is specific. The diagnosis should be discussed in case of distorting tumors of the midface.

RESUMO

The health of captive Tasmanian devils (Sarcophilus harrisii) is currently of increased interest because wild populations are being decimated by the spread of devil facial tumour disease. This report describes the pathology of an aged captive Tasmanian devil that had a pulmonary mycobacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium intracellulare in addition to multiple neoplastic processes.

RESUMO

The effectiveness of the Viratype Omniprobe in situ human papillomavirus tissue hybridization kit (Digene Diagnostics) was evaluated for the detection of HPV DNA in common orofacial lesions. Seventy mucocutaneous lesions were hybridized with a biotinylated Omniprobe that was specific for HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 42, 43, 44, 45, 51, 52, and 56. Eighteen (25.7%) of the specimens analyzed had intranuclear positive signals for HPV. Probing with HPV 6/11, 16/18, and 31/33/35 to delimit the HPV genotype yielded HPV DNA 6/11 in 16 (88.9%) of the Omniprobe-positive specimens. Only squamous papilloma and condyloma acuminatum were found to harbor HPV DNA. Sites most frequently infected were the labial and buccal mucosa (21.7%) and the floor of the mouth (17.4%). These results suggest that hybridization with the Omniprobe provides appropriate sensitivity and specificity for detecting HPV in some benign proliferations of the oral cavity. However, the detection of HPV in oral squamous cell carcinoma, lichen planus, and keratoacanthoma remains problematic until more sensitive and specific molecular techniques are used.

RESUMO

Three patients with skin lymphocytoma and different histologic and clinical appearance of lesions (solitary, grouped, and in the third patient one lesion appeared on the forehead and one on the neck) are presented. By the histologic analysis and the use of immunohistochemical methods the differentiation of these lesions from skin lymphoma and other diseases which could resembe lymphocytoma was made. The method of immunoperoxidase has clearly shown formation of follicules and polyclonal lymphocytes which is the main histologic feature of this pseudolymphoma. By the method of indirect immunofluorescence, antibodies against Borrelia burgorferi were not found in the sera of two patients while in the third it was not performed.

RESUMO

Herpes virus type 1 and 2 antigens were detected in cells originating from malignant tumors with oromaxillofacial localization. A higher incidence of type 1 antigens was noted, as compared to the type 2. Investigated antigens were detected more frequently in the tumors of ectodermal origin. Antiherpesvirus FC antibodies were found in 74.5% of the tumor bearing subjects, but only in 22.3% of the controls.

RESUMO

SV40 antigen was detected on sections through malignant oromaxillofacial tumors in 47.8% of the cases, with a higher incidence among the epithelium originating tumors. Anti-SV40 CF antibodies were detected in 83.6% of the examined subjects with cancer, but only in 57.9% of the blood donors. The titers were quite low in general. The results are discussed from the point of view of the immunologic status of the patients.
