The correspondence between Freud's doctor and his "Princess" spans the period 1929-1962, and comprises over 90 letters, mostly concerned with Freud's health but also touching upon Schur's permanent dilemma--to emigrate or to stay with Freud--and upon the dire situation of his family and friends on behalf of whom he appeals to Marie for help. After Freud's death the letters change in focus.

Familial gigantiform cementoma with brittle bone disease, pathologic fractures, and osteosarcoma: a possible explanation of an ancient mystery.

We describe four individuals of an African-American family with a predominantly diaphyseal bone disease associated with familial gigantiform cementoma (FGC), a disorder typically seen in Caucasians. The mother and her children presented with deformities of the jaws, abnormalities of the long bones, and pre-pubertal pathologic fractures. The index patient carried the diagnosis of osteosarcoma (OS). In addition, we provide a possible explanation for the jaw abnormalities of King Tutankhamen's father in the 18th dynasty in Egypt around 1350 BC.

La reconstrucción mandibular continua siendo uno de los grandes retos para el cirujano de cabeza.y cuello. Presentamos en este trabajo una revisión de los métodos empleados en nuestro Servicio en los últimos quince años en la reconstrucción mandibular, sus ventajas, inconvenientes y los éxitos de cada técnica. Revisamos el colgajo osteomiocutáneo trapecial como colgajo pediculado regional, las indicaciones actuales de los colgajos microquirúrgicos, peroné, cresta ilíaca y escapular, sin hacer una descripción exhaustiva de los mismos sino haciendo hincapié en las indicaciones, las controversias y nuestros propios resultados en cada colgajo en la última década. Exponemos unas guías clínicas para el estudio de cada defecto que nos ayuden a la selección de uno u otro colgajo. La superioridad de la reconstrucción primaria y de los colgajos microquirúrgicos, sobre los métodos tradicionales, unidos a los implantes osteointegrados nos ha permitido proporcionar una adecuada calidad de vida (estética y función) a los pacientes mandibulectomizados (AU)

The Penman case: a re-evaluation.

One of the most remarkable operations carried out in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh during the early decades of the 19th century was the surgical excision of an enormous tumour, believed to be an osteosarcoma, of the lower jaw of Robert Penman, that produced severe disfigurement of his face. James Syme, then in his late twenties, was invited to see the patient by Professor Ballingall and Dr John Abercrombie and, in July 1828, he operated, without the benefit of an anaesthetic, to completely remove the tumour. The patient not only survived the operation, but also remained in excellent health for many years afterwards. He emigrated to the United States, but occasionally returned home to Scotland. In 1855, Lord Lister, who noted that his "deformity" had been wonderfully masked by a bushy beard, saw him. This case is re-evaluated in the light of information from the archives in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and from the contemporary and more recent literature.

An early 19th century case of ameloblastoma of the jaw.

A detailed case history and macroscopical description is given of a destructive tumour of the lower jaw, treated by the Utecht prosector Petrus Koning in the years 1811-1813. The macerated skull demonstrating the enormous cystic tumour is still preserved in the Pathological Institute of the State University, Utrecht, and shows unmistakable ameloblastoma. This case is one of the first-if not the first-proven cases of ameloblastoma recorded in history. Some remarks on the conservative treatment which was used, the incidence of ameloblastoma in history and its nomenclature are included in this article.
