RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The authors examined the factors associated with sex differences in earnings for 3 professional occupations. METHODS: The authors used a multivariate Blinder-Oaxaca method to decompose the differences in mean earnings across sex. RESULTS: Although mean differences in earnings between men and women narrowed over time, there remained large, unaccountable earnings differences between men and women among all professions after multivariate adjustments. For dentists, the unexplained difference in earnings for women was approximately constant at 62% to 66%. For physicians, the unexplained difference in earnings for women ranged from 52% to 57%. For lawyers, the unexplained difference in earnings for women was the smallest of the 3 professions but also exhibited the most growth, increasing from 34% in 1990 to 45% in 2010. CONCLUSIONS: The reduction in the earnings gap is driven largely by a general convergence between men and women in some, but not all, observable characteristics over time. Nevertheless, large unexplained gender gaps in earnings remain for all 3 professions. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Policy makers must use care in efforts to alleviate earnings differences for men and women because measures could make matters worse without a clear understanding of the nature of the factors driving the differences.

RESUMO

Following early limitations on women becoming educated in and practicing dentistry, the proportion of women enrolled in dental schools around the world has increased dramatically over the past decades. Dental schools have undergone a transformation from male dominance to almost equal numbers in the United States and female predominance in other countries including the United Kingdom. However, this change in student gender distribution has not been matched among academic leaders. Data from across the globe indicate a clear disproportion in favor of males in leadership positions in dentistry-and the more senior the position, the greater the imbalance. This article reviews the evolving changes in gender distribution across the landscape of dental education, research, and practice and some initiatives to address the gender imbalance in leadership. Such initiatives can help to ensure that, in the future, the profession benefits from the spectrum of influences brought to bear by the leadership of both women and men.

RESUMO

Women's participation in the professions is steadily increasing. This study is a quantitative assessment of male and female career patterns in dentistry and of the role of marriage in any gender gap. A 1997 survey explored the professional activity of Flemish dentists. There is no educational disparity between dentists, female dentists enter the profession on an equal footing with their male colleagues. Therefore any other career influencing factors reveal themselves relatively clearly. Dependent variable was income; independent variables were gender and marriage. Female dentists scored lower than male dentists in each career phase; marriage made no significant difference. However, marriage turned out to be an important positive factor in the career of male dentists. Women dentists marry significantly later and less than their male colleagues. Further research, also of a qualitative nature, is necessary to evaluate the professional and social impact of this substantial gender difference.

RESUMO

Using the reported gross billings from the annual ADA "Survey of Dental Practice," the authors estimated the total national dental expenditures according to various dentist characteristics for the period of 1985-1995. These selected characteristics are specialty, office time, number of dentists in the practice, sex, length of experience and U.S. region. As government agencies do not report dental expenditures by such dentist characteristics, the data presented in this article may be the first of their kind to be estimated and published.

RESUMO

Total estimated dental expenditures in 1995 were approximately $47.6 billion as reported by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, or BEA. According to the Health Care Financing Administration, or HCFA, the total estimated dental expenditures in 1995 were approximately $44.7 billion. Using the reported gross billings from the annual ADA "Survey of Dental Practice," the authors estimated that the total national dental expenditures in 1995 were about $45.5 billion. As this estimate falls between the BEA- and HCFA-estimated total dental expenditures, it is one confirmation of the reliability and validity of ADA's estimates. This estimate also can be used to look at dental expenditures by selected characteristics--such as specialty, office time and number of dentists in the practice.

RESUMO

The authors analyzed the mean net income of a cohort of male and female dentists with similar demographics and practice characteristics. The authors found that the average net income of these male dentists is higher than it is for their female counterparts. This difference is statistically significant and monetarily tangible, amounting to an annual net income balance of about $26,000 (22 percent) in favor of male dentists. If such a difference in net income persists, it could affect the profession as well as the distribution of dental school enrollments.

RESUMO

Solo practice is declining, but it remains the dominant mode for the delivery of dental health care services. The increasing number of women in the dental profession with a preference for nonsolo arrangements, together with the impact of debts by students of both sexes may accelerate a decline in the number of solo dental practices in the United States.
