RESUMO

Pressure - Volume (PV) analysis is the de facto standard for assessing myocardial function. Conductance based methods have been used for the past 27 years to generate instantaneous left ventricular (LV) volume signal. Our research group has developed the instrumentation and the algorithm for obtaining PV loops based on the measurement of real - time admittance magnitude and phase from the LV of anaesthetized mice and rats. In this study, the instrumentation will be integrated into an ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) and a backpack device will be designed along with this ASIC. This will enable measurement of real-time in vivo P-V loops from conscious and ambulatory rats, useful for both acute and chronic studies.

RESUMO

Ninety-two swine averaging 104 +/- 4.5 kg and 99 cold carcasses averaging 75 +/- 3.1 kg were measured with a four-terminal plethysmograph. Pigs were transported to the abattoir, fasted 4 h, weighted, and measured for body resistance (Rs, omega), body reactance (Xc, omega), and distance (L, cm) between detector terminals that were located along the dorsal axis of the animal. Pigs were slaughtered 12 h later, carcasses were chilled for 24 h, then weighted (whole carcasses and side carcasses), and cold carcass Rs, Xc, and L measurements were obtained. The right side of the carcass was ground twice, and a 1-kg sample was frozen for later analyses of fat, ash, N, and moisture. Fat-free mass (FFM, kg) was calculated from weight and percentage of fat. Regression analyses were used to develop equations for estimating FFM on a live, adjusted live, whole carcass, and half-carcass basis. Live BW, Rs, and L accounted for the majority of the variation in FFM. Adjusting live BW for head, viscera, and blood weight increased the explained variation for live BW and decreased the variation accounted by Rs. Multiple regression models involving Rs, L, Xc, and weight accounted for 82, 84, and 84% of the variation for FFM expressed on a live, adjusted live, and cold carcass basis, respectively. Results from this study indicate that bioelectrical impedance has excellent potential as a rapid, nondestructive method for estimation of FFM for market swine and pork carcasses.

RESUMO

Transthoracic impedance cardiography is a noninvasive method to determine changes in cardiac output on the basis of the cardiac-induced impedance change measured across the thorax. In this report, we describe a new, easily applied, tetrapolar spot-electrode configuration for use in canine transthoracic impedance cardiography. The array is a convenient alternative to use of the traditional circumferential band-electrode array which, in the dog, is prohibitive because of the extensive skin preparation required. The spot-electrode array was used to compare changes in cardiac output measured by transthoracic impedance cardiography, with changes measured by a reference indicator-dilution technique. A spot-electrode array, composed of 4 standard ECG electrodes, was used to measure transthoracic impedance in 10 anesthetized dogs. Variations in cardiac output were produced by controlled hemorrhage (200- to 250-ml increments). Simultaneous reference measurements of cardiac output were made before hemorrhage (control) and at each level of hemorrhage, using the saline-dilution method. The beat-by-beat impedance changes were measured by use of a Minnesota impedance cardiograph, which also recorded the first derivative of impedance (dZ/dt). An index of cardiac output was defined as the product of the maximal value of the first time derivative of impedance, ejection time, and heart rate for each beat during inscription of a saline-dilution curve. The average of the beat-by-beat indices was calculated and then normalized relative to the initial control value. Linear regression analysis was performed to evaluate the correlation of the index of cardiac output with the reference cardiac output.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

RESUMO

The technique of impedance plethysmography is described and its application to observation of lung volume changes in the horse at exercise is discussed. The results from horse at rest show that there is a close relationship between rate of lung volume change (flow rate) and the associated impedance changes during both inspiration and expiration. Impedance changes during exercise were related to inspiration and expiration by observation of associated respiratory sounds. Artefacts related to technical difficulties are also indicated.
