BACKGROUND: Belarus and Ukraine were the countries most affected by the consequences of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant in 1986. A study of perinatal mortality in Belarus found a highly statistically significant increase in the 1990s in the most contaminated oblast Gomel but no increase during this period in the rest of Belarus. As a possible mechanism to interpret this increase as a late Chornobyl effect, it has been suggested that strontium-90 contained in Chornobyl fallout, incorporated during menarche, impairs the immune system of pregnant women which in turn increases perinatal mortality. In the present study, this hypothesis is tested using data from Ukraine. METHODS: Annual data on perinatal mortality, in the period 1981-2006 were provided by the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine. Trends in perinatal mortality rates in the most contaminated regions of Ukraine (Kyiv and Zhytomyr oblasts and the city of Kyiv; study region) were compared with rates in the rest of Ukraine (control region). To identify any differences in perinatal mortality trends between the study and control regions, the ratios of perinatal mortality rates in the study region to the rates in the control region were analyzed using the calculated strontium concentration as a predictor. RESULTS: A trend analysis of perinatal mortality rates in Ukraine revealed two bell-shaped deviations from a long-term exponential trend with maxima at the beginning and end of the 1990s. The same pattern was found in the data from the study and control regions, but the deviations were almost three times higher in the study region than in the control region. An analysis of the ratios of perinatal mortality rates in the study region to the rates in the control region (odds ratios) showed an increase and decrease during the 1990s which was approximated by a lognormal density distribution. The calculated strontium concentration, when used as a predictor, also fitted the data well. Thus, the data from Ukraine confirms the results from Belarus. The analysis of the odds ratios revealed about 1000 excess perinatal deaths in the study region in the period 1990-2004. The corresponding figure for Ukraine as a whole was estimated at 3500 perinatal deaths. CONCLUSION: It is hypothesized that the observed increase in perinatal mortality in the 1990s may be a late effect of incorporated strontium-90 on the immune system of pregnant women. The analysis is based on a theoretical model, as no data on strontium concentrations were available; the results should therefore be interpreted with caution. An updated study for Belarus would be desirable to corroborate the results.

When radioactive materials are released into the environment due to nuclear power plant accidents, they may enter into the body, and exposing it to internal radiation for long periods of time. Although several agents have been developed that help excrete radioactive elements from the digestive tract, only one type of radioactive element can be removed using a single agent. Therefore, we considered the simultaneous removal of caesium (Cs) and strontium (Sr) by utilising the multiple metal removal mechanisms of probiotic bacteria. In this study, the Cs and Sr removal capacities of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria were investigated. Observation using an electron probe micro analyser suggested that Cs was accumulated within the bacterial cells. Since Sr was removed non metabolically, it is likely that it was removed by a mechanism different from that of Cs. The amount of Cs and Sr that the cells could simultaneously retain decreased when compared to that for each element alone, but some strains showed only a slight reduction in removal. For example, Bifidobacterium adolescentis JCM1275 could simultaneously retain 55.7 mg-Cs/g-dry cell and 8.1 mg-Sr/g-dry cell. These results demonstrated the potentials of utilizing complex biological system in simultaneous removal of multiple metal species.

This paper analyses the formation of high Sr2+ concentration in strong alkaline (pH = 9.5-12.5) groundwater using data of the 27 years of observations around the destroyed Chernobyl NPP Unit 4. It appears that the formation of strong alkaline groundwater in different monitoring wells is consistent with the distribution of 90Sr, pH and main ions. The reason for the increase in 90Sr concentrations is the process of its migration from the sources of contamination - leaks of highly active water localized in certain premises inside the «Shelter ¼ object. These computational experiments showed that for the groundwater in pH range 9.5-12.4, the concentration of strontium in the form of SrOH + increases and in the form of Sr2+ - decreases. In addition, the fraction of 90Sr in the form of a soluble neutral complex compound SrCO30, which is not sorbed, reaches 14-35%. Increased fractions of 90Sr in forms of SrOH+ and SrCO3 are factors which reduce the isotope ability to be sorbed by soils and therefore increase its migration ability. In strongly alkaline groundwater a sharp increase in 90Sr volumetric activity may also be caused by ionic strength (IS) increase above 5 mmol/L. Thus, the factors that influence the increase in 90Sr volumetric activity in strongly alkaline groundwater are the formation of its complex compounds and an increase in ionic strength (IS), which reduces the thickness of the double electric layer and, as a result, reduces the sorption capacity of soils.

In order to investigate the impact of environmental conditions on the distribution and migration of 90Sr in the Longji terrace environment, the activity concentrations of 90Sr and 137Cs were determined. The activity concentration ranges of 90Sr and 137Cs in surface soil were 0.15-1.04 Bq/kg and 2.16-6.94 Bq/kg, respectively. These results showed that there was a similar trend between the activity concentration of 90Sr and 137Cs in the surface soil along the runoff path and their activity concentration were influenced by the slope of the terraced terrain. On the other hand, the activity ranges of 90Sr and 137Cs in soil cores were 0.01-2.74 Bq/kg and 0.43-7.19 Bq/kg, respectively. These results indicate that the migration mechanism of 90Sr is different from that of 137Cs. As compared with 137Cs, 90Sr is significantly influenced by the moisture content. In addition, high span of 137Cs/90Sr activity ratios were found in this study, which were attributed to the characteristics of cultivated land and frequent artificial disturbances that intensified the migration of 90Sr.

Strontium-90 (90Sr) is an artificial radioisotope produced by nuclear fission, with a relatively long half-life of 29 years. This radionuclide is released into the environment in the event of a nuclear incident, posing a serious risk to human and ecosystem health. There is a need to develop new efficient methods for the remediation of 90Sr, as current techniques for its removal have significant technical limitations and involve high energy and economic costs. Recently, several species of green microalgae within the class Chlorodendrophyceae have been found to form intracellular mineral inclusions of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC), which can be highly enriched in natural (non-radiogenic) Sr. As bioremediation techniques are an attractive option to address radioactive pollution, we investigated the capacity of the unicellular alga Tetraselmis chui (class Chlorodendrophyceae) to sequester 90Sr. The 90Sr uptake capacity of T. chui cells was assessed in laboratory cultures by monitoring the time course of radioactivity in the culture medium using liquid scintillation counting (LSC). T. chui was shown to effectively sequester 90Sr, reducing the initial radioactivity of the culture medium by up to 50%. Thus, this study demonstrates the potential of the microalga T. chui to be used as a bioremediation agent against 90Sr pollution.

Two commercially available portable Rapid DNA instruments were evaluated for their ability to process 1 µL and 10 µL saliva samples deposited on metal and plastic surfaces and contaminated with surrogates of cesium (Cs)-137, strontium (Sr)-90 and cobalt (Co)-60; radioactive materials potentially released during a nuclear weapon accident or a radiological dispersal device detonation. A comparable success rate was noted for both Rapid DNA instruments when considering the number of complete and balanced DNA profiles, the number of profiles with a minimum of 10 autosomal STR loci (out of 23 [FlexPlex™ 27] or 21 [GlobalFiler™ Express]), and the possibility to search a national DNA database in Canada and the United States. Cobalt had an adverse impact on the quality of the megaplex short tandem repeat (STR) DNA profiles derived on each instrument for two of the three contamination levels tested in this study, i.e., 0.05 M and 0.1 M as reflected by a reduced number of detected alleles and decreased profile peak heights. Strontium exhibited some adverse effect on the Rapid DNA results when used at the highest contamination level (0.1 M) whereas cesium had none. No new artifacts were observed in the Rapid DNA profiles of samples spiked with the non-radiogenic surrogates. Importantly, in the context of a radiological/nuclear (RN) event, the ANDE™ 6C offers the possibility to dispose of all radioactive materials associated with contaminated samples quickly using a chip on which all steps of the Rapid DNA process are performed whereas the RapidHIT™ ID accumulates radioactive materials for many days before disposal. An individual handling 25 samples in a week (5 per day) on the RapidHIT™ ID at a 30.5 cm distance with a 5 min exposure to the radioactive source estimated at every run would exceed the 0.042 µSv/5 min limit with gamma dose rates for Cs at 0.13 mSv and for Co at 3.8 mSv. Beta dose rates calculated for the surrogate isotopes at the three concentrations tested were also above the recommended radiation exposure limit of 1 mSv/yr (0.042 µSv/5 min). Various potential mechanisms of action behind the interference noted for Sr and Co at high concentrations are presented. These elements may play a role in the steps prior to PCR (at the DNA molecule by binding to bases or to phosphate groups), during PCR (at the DNA polymerase as cofactors for catalytic sites), or even during amplified DNA fragment detection (as fluorescence quenchers).

OBJECTIVE: assessment of impact of operation of the Pivdennoukrainska Nuclear Power Plant (PUNPP) on the environment of surveillance zone (SZ) based on parameters of radiation monitoring within 2015-2021 period. METHODS: socio-hygienic (analysis of the radiation monitoring parameters), analytical, statistical. RESULTS: The environmental radiation impact associated with emissions and discharges of radioactive substances originated in the production cycle of the PUNPP in everyday conditions was found as insignificant. The gas-aerosol atmospheric emissions of inert radioactive gases, long-lived nuclides, and 131I did not exceed the established permissible levels (PL) and amounted to a hundredth of a percent of the emission limit (EL) for the inert radioactive gases and long-lived nuclides, and a thousandth of a percent for radioactive iodine. Total atmospheric emissions of the 51Cr, 54Mn, 59Fe, 58Co, 60Co, 90Sr, 95Zr, 95Nb, 134Cs, 137Cs, and 3Н radionuclides by the PUNPP power units (actual and % of EL) did not exceed the established PL. Maximum average values of atmospheric air concentration of 137Cs in SZ forthe 2015-2021 period ranged from 2.858 µBq/m3 (PUNPP industrial site) to 1.986 µBq/m3 (Riabokoneve village, 33.5 km distance), and maximum average values of the 90Sr air concentration were from 1.310 µBq/m3 to 0.566 µBq/m3, respectively. According to radionuclide monitoring no significant change of the quality of surface water occurred upon the PUNPP discharges to the Pivdennyi Bug River. Specific activity of the 137Сs in agricultural products in the PUNPP SZ was insignificant and not exceeding the PL of the content in food products. Content of 137Cs in the samples from the PUNPP SZ did not exceed 1.0 % of the total activity. CONCLUSION: Average concentration of radionuclides in atmospheric air of the settlements in the PUNPP SZ was several orders of magnitude lower than that established by regulatory documents. The PUNPP discharges to the Pivdennyi Bug River, according to radionuclide parameters that are monitored, have not significantly changed the quality of surface water. The content of 90Sr and 137Cs was uniform in all observation radii of distance from the NPP, confirming the very low level of 90Sr and 137Cs environmental emission by the PUNPP. The content of 137Cs in agricultural products within the PUNPP SZ was significantly lower than PL.

The article assesses the content of radionuclides in hoofed animals inhabiting the Semipalatinsk Test Site by calculation. Hoofed animals' faeces were sampled to determine the content of radionuclides in their diets. Based on values determined for the content of radionuclides in animals; diets, the content of radionuclides in the meat and milk of farm animals-cows (Bos taurus taurus), sheep (Ovis), goats (Capra hircus) and horses (Equus caballus Lin., 1758) as well as in the meat of wild animals-european moose (Alces alces Lin., 1758), argali (Ovis ammon Lin., 1758), roe deer (Capreolus pygargus Pal., 1771) and saiga (Saiga tatarica Lin., 1766) was calculated. No excess of permissible values of the content of 137Cs and 90Sr in the meat of farm animals was found to be expected, even for a conventional 'conservative' scenario, in which maxima of the radionuclide activity concentration in a vegetable feed (faeces) are taken as a basis. 241Am and 239+240Pu in the meat of farm hoofed animals are not standardized. Their predicted maxima of activity concentration are very low, and even in the 'conservative' scenario, they do not exceed 1.8×10-2 Bq kg-1, 1.4×10-1 Bq kg-1 and 1.6×10-1 Bq kg-1, respectively. In the milk of farm animals, the content of 137Cs and 90Sr does not exceed permissible values. 241Am and 239+240Pu in the milk of farm animals are not standardized. Their predicted activity concentration values in the milk of sheep and goats do not exceed 6.5×10-2 Bq l-1, for cows- 2.6×10-2 Bq l-1, for horses- 3.1×10-2 Bq l-1. Permissible values of 137Cs and 90Sr in the meat of wild hoofed animals are not exceeded either. In the meat of argali, roe deer and saigas, relatively high levels of 137Cs are predictable. 241Am and 239+240Pu in meat of wild animals are not standardized. Their predicted activity concentration values in the meat of moose and argali do not exceed 3.2×10-1 Bq kg-1 and 1.6×10-1 Bq kg-1, respectively, for roe deer and saiga-5.4×10-2 Bq kg-1. Thus, in case of free grazing in the STS territory, no excess of permissible values of standardized radionuclides (137Cs and 90Sr) in the meat and milk of hoofed animals is predictable.

Simulation of a dosemeter's energy and angular response lowers development cost and time. To support development of a new beta sensitive dosemeter we simulate both the dosemeter and the skin dose in a rod phantom as there are no fluence to dose conversion coefficients in the ICRU Report 47 for electrons. Published spectra for BSS2, N-Series and S-Cs and S-Co were used to define sources, with CAD models used to define the simulation geometry. Simulation tools were validated with experimental beta and photon responses available for the BeOSL photon ring. The developed toolchain was then used to simulate several iterations of a beta sensitive detector element inside a beta ring holder, with the goal to minimise the need for repeated prototype fabrication and characterisation. Simulation results for the final design were compared to measurements on 3D printed prototypes with all radiation qualities, except 90Sr/90Y 0°, falling within measurement uncertainty.

Many residents of the Russian Southern Urals were exposed to radioactive environmental pollution created by the operations of the Mayak Production Association in the mid- 20th century. There were two major releases: the discharge of about 1x1017 Bq of liquid waste into the Techa River between 1949 and 1959; and the atmospheric release of 7.4 * 1016 Bq as a result an explosion in the radioactive waste-storage facility in 1957. The releases into the Techa River resulted in the exposure of more than 30,000 people who lived in riverside villages between 1950 and 1961. The 1957 accident contaminated a larger area with the highest exposure levels in an area that is called the East Urals Radioactive Trace (EURT). Current epidemiologic studies of the exposed populations are based on dose estimates obtained using a Monte-Carlo dosimetry system (TRDS-2016MC) that provides multiple realizations of the annual doses for each cohort member. These dose realizations provide a central estimate of the individual dose and information on the uncertainty of these dose estimates. In addition, the correlation of individual annual doses over realizations provides important information on shared uncertainties that can be used to assess the impact of shared dose uncertainties on risk estimate uncertainty.This paper considers dose uncertainties in the TRDS-2016MC. Individual doses from external and internal radiation sources were reconstructed for 48,036 people based on environmental contamination patterns, residential histories, individual 90Sr body-burden measurements and dietary intakes. Dietary intake of 90Sr resulted in doses accumulated in active bone marrow (or simply, marrow) that were an order of magnitude greater than those in soft tissues. About 84% of the marrow dose and 50% of the stomach dose was associated with internal exposures. The lognormal distribution is well-fitted to the individual dose realizations, which, therefore, could be expressed and easily operated in terms of geometric mean (GM) and geometric standard deviation (GSD). Cohort average GM for marrow and stomach cumulative doses are 0.21 and 0.03 Gy, respectively. Cohort average dose uncertainties in terms of GSD are as follows: for marrow it is 2.93 (90%CI: 2.02-4.34); for stomach and the other non-calcified tissues it is 2.32 (90% CI: 1.78-2.9).

A novel analytical solution of non-linear chromatography in case of parabolic isotherm for frontal analysis was obtained by combination of Cole-Hopf and Laplace transform. It was used for simulation of strontium capturing on chromatographic column with aim to improve quantitative determination of low-level 90Sr activities. From the experimentally determined breakthrough curves, the retention factor and the number of theoretical plates were calculated using the Glueckauf and Wenzel relations and by fitting the breakthrough curves for the linear isotherm using MatLab. These were used to simulate the breakthrough curves using a parabolic isotherm solution where the non-linear term of the isotherm was taken as a small negative deviation of the retention factor. On the base of theoretical prediction and experimental data, procedure for automated capturing of strontium on chromatographic column with specific dimension and off line "on-column" Cherenkov detection on commercial ultra low-level liquid scintillation counter was developed. It was shown that analytical solution for parabolic isotherm in comparison with solution for linear isotherm gives better prediction of mass of captured Sr on column filled with small amount of Sr resin and SuperLig®620 in case of elevated Sr concentration, even when non-linear effect is not obvious. The solution also makes it possible to predict the mass of resin required for strontium isolation at 100% yield under given conditions. Considering the limited dimensions of the column, and consequently small mass of the resin in them, it resulted in the low efficiency of the columns, which, however, did not affect the yield in real conditions of isolation. The results have shown that the yields achieved after isolation on SuperLig®620 from real samples are 100%. In addition, it is shown that captured 90Sr can be detected through 90Y ingrowth, on column filled with strontium specific resin, with Cherenkov detection efficiency of at least 50%. The efficiency may be enhanced to 60%, depending on parameters which can affect detection efficiency change (type of column, resin type, surrounding solution, etc.). The developed procedures enable quantitative determination of 90Sr in natural water samples with MDAC below 12 mBq l-1 and solid (soil and vegetation) samples with MDAC below 6 Bq kg-1 within 2-3 days. The proposed solution may easily be implemented in radiochemical laboratories where this type of analysis is routinely done within environmental monitoring or other purposes.

This study introduces an efficient method for determining 90Sr activity levels in seawater, reducing the processing time to <3 h for 50 L of seawater. The key feature of the proposed method is the chemical separation of 90Y when it is in equilibrium with 90Sr, which is achieved by utilizing custom-made sample-loading equipment and an automated radionuclide separation instrument. As a result, the procedure consistently yields a recovery rate > 90 % for 90Y. Investigations of 90Sr levels were conducted in the ocean southeast of Jeju Island from November 2021 to January 2023. Owing to the regional ocean circulation, this region was among the first within the Korean Peninsula to experience the impact of the Fukushima-accident-derived radionuclides. Throughout the investigation period, the observed 90Sr activity concentration ranged from 0.57 to 1.0 Bq m-3. No distinct temporal variation of 90Sr was observed in the selected area during the investigation.

The mass attenuation coefficient of lead nitrate (Pb(NO3)2)-filled polycarbonate (PC) composite films were determined both computationally (using Baltakmen's and Thummel empirical formulae) and experimentally using 204Tl and 90Sr-90Y radio-isotopes for films at different filler levels 0, 5, 15, 25, 35 and 50 weight percent (Wt.%). In comparison with Thummel empirical formula, the values obtained from Baltakmen's empirical formula is in good agreement with the experiment. The percentage decrease of half value layer values were (52 ± 8) and (60 ± 10)% for 204Tl and 90Sr-90Y, on comparing the values for 0 and 50 Wt.% films, and so the prepared composite films shield the beta particles effectively. The PC that used to shield the low-energy beta particles of 90Sr-90Y can also moderate the higher energy beta particles; the plot of end point energy of 90Sr-90Y versus thickness of PC exhibits a decreasing trend, which confirms that PC acts as an electron moderator.

Post-acne keloids have become a serious problem affecting the physical and mental health of adolescents. However, traditional single-treatment methods have a high recurrence rate and are highly susceptible to a variety of complications. Postoperative radiotherapy has rapidly become a popular choice for comprehensive postoperative treatment because of its painlessness, non-invasiveness, convenience, low recurrence rate, and few complications. 1 In the available literature, no serious complications have been reported. Here we introduce a case of keloid after acne with isotope strontium-90 as a comprehensive treatment regimen, which leads to extensive depigmentation in the maxillofacial region. Combined with knowledge of the relevant literature, the mechanisms, types, and timing and dose, and reflect on balancing of recurrence rates and complications to deepen our understanding of the disease.

ABSTRACT: We developed a new method for simultaneous determination of 89Sr and 90Sr with an emphasis on detectability. The samples were digested, and Sr was chemically purified followed by a single count on a liquid scintillation counter in three windows overlapping the 90Sr, 89Sr, and 90Y peaks. Gamma spectrometry was used to measure 85Sr, added for chemical recovery. The method was tested on 18 water samples spiked at levels from 9 to 242 Bq of 89Sr and 90Sr, with either single radionuclides or their mixtures. In addition, eight method blanks were measured. The data were analyzed numerically by solving a system of linear equations for 89Sr and 90Sr activities as analytes and 90Y activity as a participating component. The total uncertainties of the results were calculated numerically using variances and covariances. The average bias from the known activities was -0.3% (range from -3.6 to 3.1%) for 90Sr and - 1.5% (range from -10.1 to 5.1%) for 89Sr. The En-scores were within -1.0 and 1.0 at 95% confidence level. The detection capabilities of this method were determined by means of the decision threshold LC and the limit of detection referred to as the minimum detectable activity. All relevant uncertainties were propagated into the LC and minimum detectable activity. In addition, detection limits were calculated for the purpose of Safe Drinking Water Act monitoring. The detection capabilities were compared with the regulatory requirements in the US and EU for food and water. For samples spiked with either pure 89Sr or 90Sr, false positives were observed for the opposite radionuclide exceeding the above LC values. This was attributed to interference by the spiked activity. A new method was developed to calculate decision and detectability curves in the presence of interference.

The habitation and environment are affected by the stable isotopes of caesium (Cs) and strontium (Sr), as well as by their radioactive isotopes. The current work gives insight on Alstonia scholaris' capacity to phytoextract stable caesium (Cs) and strontium (Sr), as well as the plant's ability to protect against the toxicity of both elements. Experiments with Cs [0-5 mM (CsCl)] and Sr [0-3 mM (SrCl2. 6H2O)] dosing in controlled light, temperature, and humidity condition in greenhouse for 21 days were undertaken. Cs and Sr accumulation in different plant parts was quantified with atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) respectively. Hyper-accumulation capacity for Cs and Sr was estimated with indices like transfer factor (TF) and translocation factors (TrF). The uptake pattern of caesium in Alstonia scholaris is 5452.8-24,771.4 mg/kg DW (TF = 85.2-57.6) and in the case of Sr is 1307.4-8705.7 mg/kg DW (TF = 85.3-1.46). The findings demonstrated the plant's ability to transfer Cs and Sr to aboveground biomass on the basis of dry weight, with the majority of the metals being deposited in the shoot rather than the root portion of the plant. For Cs and Sr, with increasing concentration, the plants exhibited the enzymatic expression for defence against metal toxicity by free radicals compared to control. Field emission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (FESEM with EDS) was employed to assess the spatial distribution of Cs and Sr in plant leaf, indicating the accumulation of Cs, Sr, and their homologous components.

For the purpose of obtaining the smaller uncertainties for Hp(3) and Dp lens in 90Sr/90Y beta reference fields, a new dose determination method based on the Monte-Carlo simulation was proposed. The conversion coefficients from the absorbed dose in air, at the reference point of the extrapolation ionisation chamber, Dair, det to Hp(3; α) and the conversion factors from Dair, det to Dp lens(α) were calculated with EGSnrc, respectively, for the irradiation angles from 0° to 60°. Compared with the dose determination method in International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 6980 standard, the uncertainty reductions of 7.7-52.8% for Hp(3; α) and 7.9-55.0% for Dp lens(α) were achieved, respectively. In addition, for the conversion coefficients from the reference absorbed dose DR to Hp(3; α), the calculations were performed for more irradiation conditions, which are not included in the current ISO 6980 standard. For the calculations of the conversion factors from DR to Dp lens(α), the eye and head phantoms with Chinese characteristics were utilised, which makes the conversion factors more suitable for use in China.

This article is devoted to the study of the activity of technogenic 137Cs and 90Sr, as well as natural radionuclides 40K, 232Th and 226Ra in bottom sediments of the Kola coast of the Barents Sea, where a significant number of radiation objects are concentrated. In order to characterize and assess the accumulation of radioactivity in the bottom sediments, we studied the particle size distribution and some physicochemical parameters, such as the content of organic matter, carbonates and ash components. The average activities of natural radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were 325.0, 25.1 and 466.7 Bq·kg-1, respectively. Levels of natural radionuclides in the coastal zone of the Kola Peninsula are within the range of marine sediments worldwide. Still, they are slightly higher than those observed in the central areas of the Barents Sea, most likely due to the formation of coastal bottom sediments as a result of the destruction of the natural radionuclide-enriched crystalline basement rocks that make up the Kola coast. The average activities of technogenic 90Sr and 137Cs in the bottom sediments of the Kola coast of the Barents Sea are 3.5 and 5.5 Bq·kg-1, respectively. The highest activities of 90Sr and 137Cs were found in the bays of the Kola coast, while they remain below detection limits in the open parts of the Barents Sea. Despite the presence of potential sources of radiation pollution in the coastal zone of the Barents Sea, we did not find any short-lived radionuclides in the bottom sediments, which indicates the absence of a significant influence of local sources on the transformation of the technogenic radiation background. The study of particle size distribution and physicochemical parameters showed that the accumulation of natural radionuclides is largely related to the content of organic matter and carbonates, while the accumulation of technogenic isotopes occurs in the composition of organic matter and the smallest fractions of bottom sediments.

Data on the vertical distribution of radionuclides in the soil is necessary to fully understand the radioecological situation around ecosystems, give predictive estimates to how safe crop products are and justify a rehabilitation strategy for radioactively contaminated areas. A study was conducted to investigate the vertical distribution of radionuclides in soils of the former Semipalatinsk Test Site (STS) territory beyond its testing sites, that is, in areas in which no nuclear weapons or nuclear effects of radiological warfare agents were tested. Soil was sampled layerwise all over the Semipalatinsk Test Site down to 30 cm deep at a 5-cm spacing. Most of high activity concentrations of radionuclides all over the study area were detected in the 0-5 cm soil layer. Activity concentrations of the major man-made radionuclides were determined in soil samples collected by γ-, ß and α-spectrometry. As a result, ranges of activity concentrations of 137Cs, 241Am, 90Sr and 239+240Pu were determined in 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-25, 25-30 cm soil layers. In the conventionally 'background' area, the 0-5 cm soil layer, on average, contains (the percentage of total activity concentration across the soil profile depth): 137Cs- 83%, 239+240Pu- 87% and 90Sr- 38%. For the 1953 plume, these values were 92%, 83% and 73%, respectively. Values for the 1951 plume in the 0-5 cm soil layer were: 137Cs- 93%, 239+240Pu- 93% and 90Sr- 59%. The minimum concentration of radionuclides are observed 20-30 cm deep in all areas studied. 90Sr is the most mobile radionuclide from the perspective of its ability to travel deep down the soil. The study found out that the nuclide vertical migration rates downward in soils based on detected activity were as follows (in descending order): 90Sr- 137Cs- 239+240Pu- 241Am. Coefficients that determine the ratio of the activity concentration of the radionuclide in the 0-20 and 0-30 cm soil cover layers to that of this radionuclide in the 0-5 cm topsoil were calculated. These coefficients enable to estimate the radionuclide inventory at each soil sampling point from their activity concentration in the 0-5 cm soil layer.
