Advocacy in Action: NASN's 2024 Advocacy and Legislative Priorities.

All nurses have a responsibility to advocate. Advocacy is the eighth school nurse standard and can be actualized in many ways. NASN has established advocacy priorities to provide members with strategic advocacy objectives to advance their school nursing practice. One aspect of these priorities is legislative advocacy. The NASN board of directors puts legislative advocacy into action when they visit their Congress members on Capitol Hill. This article describes NASN's advocacy priorities and how school nurse visits to "the Hill" introduces legislative priorities to legislators.

Advocacy for School Nurses and Student Health and Safety: Highlighting National and State Efforts.

Annually, the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) sets advocacy goals. The goals include legislative and policy priorities. The COVID-19 pandemic brought attention to the need to heighten advocacy efforts, specifically to provide for additional school nurses and supplies necessary to meet the challenge of safely returning students to school. While advocating at the national level, NASN also encouraged advocacy at the state and local levels. This article provides a brief summary of NASN's advocacy efforts as well as providing examples from two different state associations demonstrating the importance of collaboration in advocacy efforts in areas related to the pandemic and in general areas related to school nursing.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council is considering whether to take action against three unregistered practitioners from overseas who were discovered working as nurses at a UK trust.

Accountability: the challenge for medical and nursing regulators.

Little has been written about how regulatory bodies define and demonstrate accountability. This paper describes a substudy of a research project on accountability in healthcare. The aim was to increase understanding of how regulatory bodies perceive and demonstrate accountability to their stakeholders. Twenty-two semi-structured interviews were conducted with provincial/territorial CEOs from the two largest health professional regulatory bodies in Canada: medicine and nursing. The regulators indicated that accountability was essential to their mandates and provided the foundation for regulatory frameworks. However, they did not offer a common definition of accountability. They agreed that they were accountable to three constituencies: the public, government and their members. Regulators noted that protecting the public and meeting the demands of the government and their members creates tension. They were also concerned about maintaining independence in the regulatory role.

Preventing falls A falls prevention strategy from the Scottish Government outlines a 'framework for action' in the prevention and management of falls in the community. The strategy describes in detail four actions required to meet the minimum standards for falls prevention: supporting health improvement and self-management to reduce patients' risk of having a fall; identifying high risk individuals; responding to people who have fallen and require immediate assistance; and co-ordinated management and specialist assessment. The document also includes a measurement plan to support services and teams in tracking their progress at implementing the framework. NMC able to ban nurses with poor English under draft legislation.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council would be able to ban nurses with poor English-language skills from practising, under a proposed reform of its legal powers.
