RESUMO

Renal telangiectasia has been reported in Pembroke Welsh corgis with chronic hematuria; however, the sonographic features of these lesions have never been described. Two dogs with confirmed renal telangiectasia and one dog with presumptive renal telangiectasia were identified in a medical record search. All dogs had one or more variably sized renal nodules identified on abdominal ultrasound. The nodules in two of the three dogs were similar, appearing hyperechoic with numerous punctate hypoechoic to anechoic foci throughout. None of the nodules showed evidence of hemodynamic flow on Doppler ultrasound. Renal telangiectasia should be considered as a benign differential diagnosis, particularly in Pembroke Welsh corgis.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the frequency of the main causes for condemnation of bovine liver in an abattoir/cold store under the Federal Inspection Services, located in the Zona da Mata of the state of Minas Gerais, between 2007 and 2013. Study data was collated from forms containing information about the number of cattle slaughtered per month and the causes for liver condemnation at the studied abattoir. During the period under study, 150,752 cattle were slaughtered, and the frequency of liver condemnation varied between 9.38% and 14.09% from year to year. The main pathologies that led to liver condemnation were abscesses, telangiectasis, and fasciolosis, which were responsible for 32.03%, 29.20%, and 21.95% of the condemnations, respectively. The frequency of condemnation because of abscesses and telangiectasis showed a trend of decline, 3.26% and 0.68% per year, respectively. The frequency of condemnation because of fasciolosis, however, showed a trend of increase by 3.40% per year. This study shows the usefulness of post mortem inspection of animal health and production monitoring.(AU)

RESUMO

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common type of bone cancer, especially in young. Telangiectatic osteosarcoma (TO) is a rare variant of OS, and hence, its occurrence, presentation, and prognosis are poorly understood. A 4-year-old female rhesus monkey presenting lameness and swelling was examined for a mass on the right humerus. Radiography revealed fracture and disorganized structure of bone tissue. Histopathological examination revealed malignant neoplasm composed of anaplastic osteoblasts, which invaded the bone marrow and surrounded blood-filled cysts in the epiphysis and diaphysis forming septa. Cytogenetic analysis showed aneuploid cells, supernumerary AgNORs, and a marker fragment. The neoplasm was diagnosed as TO. To our knowledge, the occurrence of TO and its cytogenetic analysis were reported for the first time in non-human primates.

RESUMO

A 2-day-old Simmental calf with arthrogryposis and astasia was subjected to necropsy examination. The calf was normoglycaemic and normoinsulinaemic. Microscopically, pancreatic tissue was hyperplastic with an irregular lobular arrangement of pancreatic islets. Newly-formed islet cells budded from intralobular or intercalated ducts (so-called ductulo-insular complexes) and there were prominent blood vessels with telangiectatic features surrounded by rows of cuboidal-columnar islet cells. The newly-formed islets expressed insulin antigen immunohistochemically. The lesion was diagnosed as nesidioblastosis, an uncommon abnormality previously associated with the double muscling trait in cattle.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of a focal right ventricular rupture following removal of a rib-associated telangiectatic osteosarcoma (TOS) in a dog. CASE SUMMARY: A 2-year-old spayed female mixed-breed dog, weighing 20 kg, was presented in compensated hypovolemic shock due to active bleeding into the thoracic cavity. The dog was stabilized with appropriate fluid administration. Subsequent computed tomographic examination revealed a large mineralized mass originating from the body of a rib and displacing the heart. Two days after surgical removal of this mass, focal right ventricular rupture occurred and the dog died. The mass was later identified as a TOS. NEW OR UNIQUE INFORMATION PROVIDED: Although hemothorax secondary to TOS has been described previously, this report describes for the first time, spontaneous focal right ventricular rupture as a rare complication of thoracotomy and rib resection for the removal of a rib-associated, intrathoracic TOS.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To identify potential bacterial pathogens in normal and telangiectatic livers of mature cattle at slaughter and to identify consumer risk associated with hepatic telangiectasia. SAMPLE POPULATION: 50 normal livers and 50 severely telangiectatic livers. PROCEDURE: Normal and telangiectatic livers were collected at slaughter for aerobic and anaerobic bacterial culture. Isolates were identified, and patterns of isolation were analyzed. Histologic examination of all livers was performed. RESULTS: Human pathogens isolated from normal and telangiectatic livers included Escherichia coli O157:H7 and group-D streptococci. Most livers in both groups contained bacteria in low numbers; however, more normal livers yielded negative culture results. More group-D streptococci were isolated from the right lobes of telangiectatic livers than from the left lobes, and more gram-negative anaerobic bacteria were isolated from left lobes of telangiectatic livers than from right lobes. All telangiectatic lesions were free of fibrosis, active necrotizing processes, and inflammation. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The USDA regulation condemning telangiectatic livers is justified insofar as these livers contain more bacteria than normal livers do; however, normal livers contain similar species of microflora. Development of telangiectasia could not be linked to an infectious process. The finding of E coli O157:H7 in bovine livers suggests that information regarding bacterial content of other offal and muscle may identify sources of this and other potential foodborne pathogens and assist in establishing critical control points for the meat industry.

RESUMO

Forty-five livers from conventionally slaughtered Holstein-Friesian steers with telangiectasis were studied by histochemical methods, immunolabelling for fibronectin, laminin and type IV collagen, and transmission electron microscopy. None of the previously described changes in telangiectasis (necrosis, hepatitis, thromboembolism, dilatation of the space of Disse by glycogen extruded from hepatocytes and reduced density of the perisinusoidal reticulin framework) were evident. Pretelangiectasis (sinusoidal dilatation) and telangiectasis (blood-filled cavities) were characterized by sinusoidal barrier alterations, leading to sinusoidal capillarization; and there was progressive formation of a true basement membrane and perisinusoidal fibrosis. Comparison of bovine liver telangiectasis and human peliosis hepatis suggests that they have a similar pathogenesis. It is suggested that a primary alteration of the sinusoidal barrier is responsible for an increased deposition of basement membrane components (fibronectin, laminin, type IV collagen) in the perisinusoidal region, and fibrosis. These are likely to render the exchange of oxygen and substrates between blood and hepatocytes more difficult and to produce haemodynamic imbalances, leading to hepatocyte atrophy and eventually to sinusoidal disruption.

RESUMO

Rectal bleeding in a 7-month-old 13-kg sexually intact female mixed-breed dog was determined to be associated with vascular ectasia of the small intestine, descending colon, rectum, and anus. Microscopically, the telangiectasia was associated with lymphangiectasia and focal ulceration. Surgical intervention resulted in incomplete resection of the lesion and only temporary amelioration of clinical signs. The dog's age was compatible with a congenital origin for the defect, but an acquired cause could not be excluded.

RESUMO

We histologically examined (i) 73 bovine livers condemned by packing house inspectors for telangiectasis, (ii) 15 bovine livers passed by the same inspectors as normal, and (iii) 8 livers from cattle given an injection into their mesenteric veins: 6 with a suspension of agar particles containing viable Haemophilus somnus and 2 with diluent only. The injected cattle were killed and necropsied 2 to 12 days after the inoculations. Of the 73 telangiectatic livers, 57 (78%) had thrombosed and occluded or contracted and empty portal veins (venopathies), whereas 1 of the 15 normal livers contained one microscopic focus of telangiectasis and nearby venopathy. Of the 6 livers injected with suspended particles, all had venopathies and telangiectasis and the 2 control livers had neither.

RESUMO

The toxic effects of Fenthion on the gills of Cichlid fishes were investigated. In Herotilapia multispinosa hyperplasia and separation of the respiratory epithelium, lamellar telangiectasis and thrombosis occurred. The lamellar epithelium of surviving fish regenerated in all cases. In Tilapia leucosticta no telangiectasis was found, but all the secondary lamellae were fused due to the severe hyperplasia of the gill epithelium.

RESUMO

The occurrence of capillary telangiectasis of the brain in a chimpanzee is reported. The telangiectases were multiple and diffusely scattered throughout the brain although the cerebral and cerebellar cortex were particulary affected. Hemorrhage into surrounding gliotic parenchyma was present. The were associated neuroligic sings, most significantly paralysis and convulsions, and the outcome was fatal. A Case of this nature has not previously been reported.
