RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) significantly impacts patients' lives, affecting not only their physical health but also their spiritual well-being. While holistic care acknowledges the importance of addressing spiritual needs, the integration of nurse-led spiritual care within CVD management remains understudied. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of spiritual and psychological interventions in enhancing quality of life and reducing anxiety among CVD patients. METHODS: Following the PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive search across multiple databases (PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, SID, Magiran, and Web of Science) for relevant articles published in English and Persian between 2013 and 2023. The risk of bias in included experimental and quasi-experimental studies was assessed using ROB 2 and ROBINS-I scales. RESULTS: The initial search yielded 1416 articles. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, along with qualitative evaluation, 15 studies with a total of 1035 participants were selected for review. These studies explored the impact of spiritual interventions (e.g., healthy heart model, emotion-oriented approach, communication with a higher power, acceptance, and relationship improvement) on anxiety, stress, life expectancy, depression, blood parameters, spiritual experiences, pain, and negative emotions in CVD patients. All reviewed studies reported positive outcomes with spiritual interventions, demonstrating their effectiveness in reducing anxiety, depression, pain, stress, and negative emotions, while also improving quality of life and possibly life expectancy. CONCLUSION: Integrating spiritual care into routine care for CVD patients presents a promising approach to improve their overall well-being. This review highlights the effectiveness of spiritual interventions in reducing various negative emotions and enhancing quality of life. TRIAL REGISTRATION: PROSPERO (CRD42023448687).

RESUMO

AIM: To explore the status of quality of life and psychological capital and analyse the different effects of psychological capital on the quality of life of cancer patients with different preferences for nurse spiritual therapeutics. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey was used. METHODS: Two hundred and eight cancer patients were recruited using convenience sampling from a tertiary Chinese hospital, between March and July 2019. Data on preferences for nurse spiritual therapeutics (PNST), psychological capital (PsyCap) and quality of life (QoL) were collected using paper questionnaires. Hierarchical multiple regression was employed to investigate the different influences of PsyCap on QoL of cancer patients with various levels of PNST. RESULTS: Compared with patients having high PNST, patients with mild-moderate PNST experienced lower self-efficacy, hope, optimism, PsyCap and social/family well-being. PsyCap significantly explained the variance on QoL of patients with various levels of PNST. Age, gender, presence of caregiver were significant factors influencing physical, social/family and emotional well-being of patients with high PNST. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrates disparities in PsyCap and QoL between cancer patients with mild-moderate and high PNST. It is essential to be aware of the positive influences of PsyCap on QoL and develop effective interventions for patients to improve their QoL, especially for those with mild-moderate PNST. IMPACT: It is necessary to realize the benefits of PsyCap on QoL of cancer patients with various levels of PNST. Appropriate training for nurses needs to be developed to promote their spiritual care competencies. Moreover, supportive interventions should be developed for cancer patients to improve their PsyCap and QoL.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To reflect on teaching experience in the application of the spiritual nursing care called permission for departing. METHODS: It is a methodological reflection and description of a subtle technology for spiritual nursing care called permission for departing. RESULTS: the permission for departing is a spiritual care that allows for an intentional therapeutic relationship of trust and safety among the professional, patients, and the family, enabling the expression of feelings, beliefs, and religious or spiritual rites that help in death and dying situations. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: a concept structured by words and attitudes reinforcing what is positive was coined, aiming at a consciousness state of peace and the promotion of dignity in the death and dying process, as well as for time for the patients, their families and the team to experience contemplation and parting.

RESUMO

This is an experimental, quantitative, parallel design study (control and experimental groups) with pre- and post-intervention assessment without blinding, which aimed to determine the effect of an educational intervention delivered to ninety Colombian senior nursing students to strengthen perceptions of spirituality and spiritual care for people with chronic illness. The Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale (SSCRS) was used as the instrument of measurement. The Wilcoxon test was used for comparisons between two groups, and the Kruskal-Wallis test for the comparison of global scale scores between the intervention group and the control group. To determine the effect of the intervention, Cohen's d statistic was used. The intervention modified the perceptions of spirituality and spiritual care in the experimental group (median = 80.2, SD = 10.2) compared with their initial perceptions (median = 70, SD = 11.2), p ≤ 0.001. The effect size (ES) of the intervention was 0.63, with a power of 0.80, indicating a moderate and acceptable effect size.

RESUMO

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To determine factors associated with nurses' spiritual care competencies. BACKGROUND: Holistic nursing care includes biopsychosocial and spiritual care. However, nurses are limited by a lack of knowledge, time constraints and apprehension of assessing spiritual issues, which leaves them unable to assess and meet patients' spiritual needs. Thus, when patients experience spiritual distress, clinical nurses lose the opportunity to support spiritual growth and self-actualisation. In Taiwan, spiritual care, religion and culture are unique compared to those in other countries. Overall, factors associated with Taiwanese nurses' spiritual care competencies lack comprehensive exploration. METHODS: This study adopted a descriptive correlational design using cross-sectional survey (see Appendix S1). Cluster sampling was used to select clinical nurses from fourteen units of a medical centre and a regional hospital. Data were collected from January-June 2018 with a 97.03% response rate. Clinical nurses completed a background questionnaire, spiritual care practice questionnaire, spirituality and spiritual care-related scales. Data were analysed using descriptive and linear regression. This report followed the STROBE checklist. RESULTS: Spiritual care competence ranged from 44-123 (mean 84.67 ± 12.88; range 27-135). The majority of clinical nurses rated their spiritual care competence as moderate (64-98). The significant factors associated with nurses' spiritual care competence were education, religion, interest in spiritual care, having role models, past life events, barriers to providing spiritual care of the spiritual care practice score, and spiritual attitude and involvement score. The overall model was significant (p < .001) and accounted for 55.0% of variance (adjusted R2  = .488). CONCLUSIONS: Most clinical nurses have moderate spiritual care competence. Objective factors identified affect clinical nurses' spiritual care competencies. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: To improve nurses' spiritual care competencies, objective factors that affect clinical nurses' spiritual care competencies must be emphasised. Multiple strategies for enhancing nurses' own spiritual well-being can be provided via employee health promotion projects and activities, and promoting nurses' spirituality and spiritual care competencies can be explored in clinical settings through bedside teaching, situational simulation, objective structured clinical examinations and self-reflection.

RESUMO

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore nurses' and healthcare professionals' perceptions of spiritual care and the impact of spiritual care training on their clinical roles. BACKGROUND: Many nurses and healthcare professionals feel unprepared and lack confidence, competence and skills, to recognise, assess and address patients' spiritual issues. Patients with unmet spiritual needs are at increased risk of poorer psychological outcomes, diminished quality of life and reduced sense of spiritual peace. There are implications for patient care if nurses and healthcare professionals cannot attend to patients' spiritual needs. DESIGN: A qualitative methodology was adopted. METHODS: Recruitment was purposive. A total of 21 generalist and specialist nursing and healthcare professionals from North West and South West England, who undertook spiritual care training between 2015-2017, were recruited. Participants were required to be a minimum of 3 months posttraining. Digitally audio-recorded semistructured interviews lasting 11-40 min were undertaken in 2016-2017. Data were subjected to thematic analysis. Ethical committee approval was obtained. COREQ reporting guidelines were utilised. RESULTS: Two main themes were identified, recognising spirituality, with subthemes of what spirituality means and what matters, and supporting spiritual needs, with subthemes of recognition of spiritual distress, communication skills, not having the answers and going beyond the physical. CONCLUSIONS: Supporting patients as they approach the end of life needs a skilled workforce; acknowledging the importance of spiritual care and having skills to address it are central to delivery of best holistic care. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Spiritual care is as important as physical care and supporting patients spiritually as they approach the end of life is vital. Appropriately trained, nurses and healthcare professionals are better able to assess, explore and meet patients' spiritual needs.

Objective: To describe in our environment the level of knowledge about the construct internationally accepted by the nursing profession on spirituality and religiosity and attitudes towards the practice of spiritual and religious care. Methods: Quantitative, descriptive and transversal study. We have explored the knowledge and attitudes of nurses regarding the concept of spirituality and religiosity using a self-designed questionnaire. Results: We obtained 78.23% in correct knowledge and 69.84% in positive attitude towards spiritual and religious care. Conclusions: In our environment, nurses demonstrate an understanding of spiritual and religious care in tune with the construct that advocates internationally. Attitudes before this care are favorable although the need for awareness of direct accountability to them beyond the correct referral to other competent professionals is detected. It is necessary to complete the training in some aspects of the intervention

It is necessary to know the perception of nurses about the emotional attention given to patients at the spiritual dimension in patient care plan. The objective was to know the spiritual care offered by nurses in their daily work during a patient’s hospital stay and detect possible associated factors that hinder the facing death. Material and Methods. The unit of analysis has been the primary original studies, electronic searches (Cuiden, Scielo, Pubmed) and manuals relevant of articles published in journals, bibliographies and reference lists of reviews and papers were made. Results and Conclusions. There are a number of factors that hinder the proper intervention of nursing professionals in specific situations of non-health: especially when the patient feels the urgent need to obtain information on their health status because it is admitted in a hospital in terminal situation, as when you communicate suddenly having a serious organic disorder in some body structure with some degree of limitation prevents regular physical activity…. as a result he feels emotions like anxiety, fear, depression, anger, dissatisfaction, etc which are emotions with high emotional and spiritual burden (AU)

This study evaluated the potential impact of an online spiritual care educational program on pediatric nurses' attitudes toward and knowledge of spiritual care and their competence to provide spiritual care to children with cancer at the end of life. It was hypothesized that the intervention would increase nurses' positive attitudes toward and knowledge of spiritual care and increase nurses' level of perceived spiritual care competence. A positive correlation was expected between change in nurses' perceived attitudes toward and knowledge of spiritual care and change in nurses' perceived spiritual care competence. A prospective, longitudinal design was employed, and analyses included one-way repeated-measures analysis of variance, linear regression, and partial correlation. Statistically significant differences were found in nurses' attitudes toward and knowledge of spiritual care and nurses' perceived spiritual care competence. There was a positive relationship between change scores in nurses' attitudes toward and knowledge of spiritual care and nurses' spiritual care competence. Online spiritual care educational programs may exert a lasting impact on nurses' attitudes toward and knowledge of spiritual care and their competence to provide spiritual care to children with cancer at the end of life. Additional studies are required to evaluate the direct effects of educational interventions patient outcomes.

RESUMO

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study develops a new instrument, the Spiritual Care Intervention-Provision Scale, and assesses its psychometric properties in an Arab Muslim nurse sample. The Spiritual Care Intervention-Provision Scale was developed to measure the frequency with which nurses provided aspects of spiritual care. BACKGROUND: Most of the available spiritual care instruments were developed in the West and reflect a predominantly Christian tradition. A review of the literature on spiritual care in nursing revealed that no instrument exists for measuring spiritual care interventions provided by nurses to Arab Muslim patients. DESIGN: A cross-sectional descriptive and correlational design. METHODS: Following an extensive literature search, review by an expert panel and a pilot study which included patients' views regarding aspects of spiritual care provided by nurses, the final version of the Spiritual Care Intervention-Provision Scale was tested in a convenience sample of 360 Jordanian Arab Muslim nurses. Correlational and factor analysis were used. RESULTS: The internal consistency of the Spiritual Care Intervention-Provision Scale was high, with α coefficient of 0·85. The exploratory factor analysis supported a two-factor structure for the Spiritual Care Intervention-Provision Scale as hypothesised. A significant positive correlation between the Spiritual Care Intervention-Provision Scale and religiosity was in the expected direction though small in magnitude. CONCLUSIONS: This study initiates the development of an instrument for the provision of spiritual care intervention by nurses that balances the religious and existential dimensions of spirituality. The Spiritual Care Intervention-Provision Scale exhibited acceptable evidence of internal consistency and validity among Jordanian Arab Muslim nurses. Further work was suggested to firmly establish all aspects of this new scale. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This culturally specific instrument contributes to the evaluation of the provision of spiritual care by Jordanian Muslim nurses to their patients, to guide them in providing a comprehensive and appropriate spiritual care interventions and to examine the effect of spiritual care on various aspects of patient's quality of life.

RESUMO

Spiritual care is essential to the well-being of patients, and nurses provide spiritual care as a fundamental part of nursing practice. In this study, we investigated the spiritual care needs of hospitalized patients to determine whether the perceived knowledge of nurses corresponded with these spiritual care needs. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 1351 hospitalized patients and 200 registered nurses recruited from a medical center in central Taiwan. A questionnaire, including the 21-item Spiritual Care Needs Inventory (patient and nurse version) and basic demographic information, was distributed to eligible participants. The top three items of the spiritual care needs expressed by the hospitalized patients were respect for privacy and dignity, showing concern, and guidance in gaining a sense of hope in life; the percentages of nurses not knowing how to provide these spiritual care needs were 0%, 1%, and 15%, respectively. The spiritual care needs of patients showed a significant relationship with the knowledge of nurses, suggesting that the perceived knowledge of the nurses generally corresponded with the spiritual care items that the patients required most.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the understanding of the concept of spiritual distress and existing methods toidentify it. Method: it is an integrative literature review conducted in LILACS, MEDLINE, BDENf, CINAHL,IBECS, PUBMED, using the terms "spiritual distress", "spiritual suffering", together with the descriptor: nursing. Results: after analysis of 30 articles, nine were selected, and only four (44.4%) conceptualized spiritual distress, some using more than one concept, with the deficiencies in the constructs of transcendence, connection, beliefs/values systems, sense of meaning and purpose in life that most prevailed. Strategies to identify the phenomenon range from close observation of the patient to the application of psychometric assessment instruments. Conclusion: he combined use of all methods will enable healthcare professionals to have the means to identify and assess spiritual distress and thus offer care that meets the spiritual needs of the patient.

Understanding factors that influence spiritual well-being may improve nurses' spiritual caregiving. This study examined relationships between emotional intelligence (EI) and spiritual well-being (SWB) in undergraduate and graduate nursing students. Using the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) and the spiritual well-being scale (SWBS) relationships were found between managing emotion and spiritual well-being, and managing emotion and existential well-being. Implications for education and practice are discussed.
