RESUMO

Analytical data of Roman and early Islamic glass established several primary glass production groups linked to glassmaking centres in the Levant and in Egypt. In contrast, the activities of secondary glass workshops are largely invisible in the compositional fingerprint of first millennium glass. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) of 261 glass finds from the Visigothic settlement of Tolmo de Minateda (Spain) revealed a site-specific contamination pattern due to secondary glass processing and recycling, namely the enrichment of the glass batch by a unique combination of rare alkali elements (Li, K, Rb, Cs). With a median of 21 ppm, Li is particularly distinctive. Elevated lithium contents (Li>30 ppm) are also one of the characteristic features of Iberian plant ash glass from the Islamic period. The earliest known examples of this type of glass were found among the ninth-century remains from Tolmo.

The comparative analysis of glasses based on refractive index (RI) is a widely used method in forensic examinations. However, it cannot be directly applied if the control sample has previously been altered by heat or fire, since RI can change significantly in this process. For this reason, the refractive index of the fragments recovered from the perpetrator's clothing can also differ from the control sample recovered after the fire, although they originate from the same source. In the present study, annealing was used as a possible way for the examination of glass microfragments exposed to heat. The appropriate conditions of annealing were investigated first. Then fragments from a toughened and a non-toughened glass were heated in a furnace for various times at 450 and 650 °C and cooled down immediately to model different heat expositions. It resulted in a significant change in the RIs in all cases. These fragments, together with the non-treated samples from the same pane of glasses, were annealed using the optimized parameters. In a similar process, further glasses exposed to real fire were examined. It was found, both in the model experiments and for the fragments exposed to fire, that - regardless of the heat exposure conditions - annealing resulted in the same RI for fragments from the same source, while for different samples different values were observed. Altogether, 11 glasses were examined in 38 experiments, and it was found that annealing combined with refractive index measurement could be a possible way for the examination of heated fragments. The changes in RIs and standard deviations observed during the experiments are consistent with literature data.

Mineral soda alumina (m-Na-Al) glass is a common glass production group found around the Indo-Pacific region. In Iron Age Taiwan, its presence dates back to the early 1st millennium AD. This research discusses m-Na-Al glass beads excavated from Iron Age sites in Taiwan. No production sites for m-Na-Al have been found, but microstructural analysis suggests m-Na-Al glass appears to originate around South Asia and is exchanged widely. SEM-EDS and EPMA were used to analyse red, orange, yellow, green and blue m-Na-Al glass. The microstructure of the glass shows the presence of plagioclase and alkali feldspar relics in the glass, suggesting a low manufacturing temperature. Copper-based colourants are identified in red, orange, blue and green glass, while lead tin oxide is used in yellow and green glass. It appears that various types of copper-containing raw materials were procured by craftspeople, and a self-reduction process for producing red and orange glass is tentatively proposed. Additionally, the microstructure of yellow glass reveals different colouring paths were used. These results increase our understanding of the selection of raw materials, and provide an impetus for further research on the cross craft interaction between glass and copper production.

The aim of this study was to establish the persistence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on inanimate surfaces such as plastic, stainless steel, and glass during UV-C irradiation which is a physical means commonly utilized in sanitization procedures. The viral inactivation rate, virus half-life, and percentage of titer reduction after UV-C irradiation were assessed. Infectivity was maintained on plastic and glass until 120 h and on stainless steel until 72 h. The virus half-life was 5.3, 4.4, and 4.2 h on plastic, stainless steel, and glass, respectively. In all cases, titer decay was >99% after drop drying. UV-C irradiation efficiently reduced virus titer (99.99%), with doses ranging from 10.25 to 23.71 mJ/cm2. Plastic and stainless steel needed higher doses to achieve target reduction. The total inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 on glass was obtained with the lower dose applied. SARS-CoV-2 survival can be long lasting on inanimate surfaces. It is worth recommending efficient disinfection protocols as a measure of prevention of viral spread. UV-C can provide rapid, efficient and sustainable sanitization procedures of different materials and surfaces. The dosages and mode of irradiation are important parameters to consider in their implementation as an important means to fight the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy was used to characterize the boron profile and its coordination (BIII and BIV), along the complex alteration layer of glass samples altered for 511 days at 50 °C in solution containing FeCl2, MgCl2 and/or CaCl2. To reach this goal, the impact of both TEM operating conditions and sample preparation on the determination of the boron coordination was first studied using mineralogical and pristine glasses reference samples. Then, the boron concentration profiles were characterized in the glass alteration layer. These profiles were found to be S-shaped with a thickness around forty nanometers. The proportion of BIII was found to decrease with the boron total concentration (from the pristine glass to the gel layer), which suggests a higher bonding strength for BIV bonds than that of BIII bonds under the alteration conditions. These findings are of tremendous interest to advance further in the understanding of glass alteration mechanisms.

RESUMO

We spotted severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 on polystyrene plastic, aluminum, and glass for 96 hours with and without bovine serum albumin (3 g/L). We observed a steady infectivity (<1 log10 drop) on plastic, a 3.5 log10 decrease on glass, and a 6 log10 drop on aluminum. The presence of proteins noticeably prolonged infectivity.

This study aims to evaluate occupational exposure models by comparing model estimations of Stoffenmanager, version 8.2, and exposure scores calculated using a new exposure model with personal exposure measurements for styrene used in the fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) lamination processes in Korea. Using the collected exposure measurements (n = 160) with detailed contextual information about the type of process, working conditions, local exhaust ventilation, respiratory protections, and task descriptions, we developed a new model algorithm to estimate the score for occupational exposures on situation level. We assumed that the source of exposure originates from the near field only (within the breathing zone of workers). The new model is designed as a simple formula of multiplying scores for job classification, exposure potential, engineering controls, chemical hazard, and exposure probability and then dividing the score for workplace size. The final score is log-transformed, ranging from 1 to 14, and the exposure category is divided into four ratings: no exposure (1), low (2), medium (3), and high (4) exposures. Using the contextual information, all the parameters and modifying factors are similarly entered into the two models through direct translation and coding processes with expert judgement, and the exposure estimations and scores using the two models are calculated for each situation. Overall bias and precision for Stoffenmanager are -1.00 ± 2.07 (50th) and -0.32 ± 2.32 (90th) for all situations (n = 36), indicating that Stoffenmanager slightly underestimated styrene exposures. Pearson's correlation coefficients are significantly high for Stoffenmanager (r = 0.87) and the new model (r = 0.88), and the correlation between the two models is significantly high (r = 0.93) (p < 0.01). Therefore, the model estimations using Stoffenmanager and the new model are significantly correlated with the styrene exposures in the FRP lamination process. Further studies are needed to validate and calibrate the models using a larger number of exposure measurements for various substances in the future.

A new type of ultrathin fiber microprobe for selective electroporation is reported. The microprobe is 10 cm long and has a diameter of 350 µm. This microprobe is a low cost tool, which allows electroporation of an arbitrary selected single cell or groups of cells among population with use of a standard microscope and cell culture plates. The microprobe in its basic form contains two metal microelectrodes made of a silver-copper alloy, running along the fiber, each with a diameter of 23 µm. The probe was tested in vitro on a population of normal and cancer cells. Successful targeted electroporation was observed by means of accumulation of trypan blue (TB) dye marker in the cell. The electroporation phenomenon was also verified with propidium iodide and AnnexinV in fluorescent microscopy.

Background and objective: Infusion containing paracetamol, alizapride, ketorolac and tramadol is used after a general anaesthesia in order to limit pain, fever and nausea. Currently, these infusions are prepared according to demand in the anaesthesia unit, but the preparation in advance could improve quality of preparation and time management. The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term stability of this infusion in glass bottles at 5°C ± 3 °C. Method: Five bottles of infusion were stored at 5°C ± 3 °C for 60 days. A visual and microscope inspection were performed periodically to observe any particle appearance or colour change. pH and absorbance at three wavelengths were measured. The concentrations were measured by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography - diode array detection. Results: Multiple verifications were performed during the first 35 days and no crystal, impurity or colour change were observed. At the next time point (42nd day), crystals were visible to the naked eye. pH and absorbance at 350 nm and 550 nm were stable. A slight increase in the absorbance at 410 nm was observed during the study, suggesting that a degradation product could be formed and absorb at this wavelength. The infusion was considered chemically stable while the lower one-sided prediction limit at 95% remains superior to 90% of the initial concentration. Concentration measurements demonstrated that ketorolac and alizapride remained stable in the infusion for 35 days. The stability of tramadol was 28 days. However, degradation of paracetamol was much faster given that concentration has fallen below 90% of the initial concentration after 7 days. Conclusion: Infusion of paracetamol, alizapride, ketorolac and tramadol remains stable for 7 days in glass bottles at 5°C ± 3 °C and could be prepared in advance with these storage conditions.

The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of an aerodynamic separation scheme for obtaining aerosols with nearly monodisperse fiber lengths as test samples for mechanistic toxicological evaluations. The approach involved the separation of aerosolized glass fibers using an Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier (AAC) or a multi-cyclone sampling array, followed by the collection of separated samples on filter substrates, and the measurement of each sample fiber length distribution. A glass fiber aerosol with a narrow range of aerodynamic sizes was selected and sampled with the AAC or multi-cyclone sampling array in two separate setups. The fiber length and diameter were measured using a field emission scanning electron microscope. The glass fiber aerosol was separated in distinct groups of eight with the AAC and of four with the multi-cyclone sampling array. The geometric standard deviations of the fiber length distributions of the separated aerosols ranged from 1.49 to 1.69 for the AAC and from 1.6 to 1.8 for multi-cyclone sampling array. While the separation of glass fiber aerosols with an AAC is likely to produce two different length fiber groups and the length resolution may be acceptable, the overall mass throughput of these separation schemes is limited.

Magnetic levitation (MagLev) is a promising technology for density-based analysis and manipulation of diamagnetic objects of various physical forms. However, one major drawback is that MagLev can be performed only along the central axis (one-dimensional MagLev), thereby leading to (i) no knowledge about the magnetic field in regions other than the axial region, (ii) inability to handle objects of similar densities, because they are aggregated in the axial region, and (iii) objects that can be manipulated (e.g., separated or assembled) in only one single direction, that is, the axial direction. This work explores a novel approach called "axial-circular MagLev" to expand the operational space from one dimension to three dimensions, enabling substances to be stably levitated in both the axial and circular regions. Without noticeably sacrificing the total density measurement range, the highest sensitivity of the axial-circular MagLev device can be adjusted up to 1.5 × 104 mm/(g/cm3), approximately 115× better than that of the standard MagLev of two square magnets. Being able to fully utilize the operational space gives this approach greater maneuverability, as the three-dimensional self-assembly of controllable ring-shaped structures is demonstrated. Full space utilization extends the applicability of MagLev to bioengineering, pharmaceuticals, and advanced manufacturing.

Around former glass factories in south eastern Sweden, there are dozens of dumps whose radioactivity and physico-chemical properties were not investigated previously. Thus, radiometric and physico-chemical characteristics of waste at Madesjö glass dump were studied to evaluate pre-recycling storage requirements and potential radiological and environmental risks. The material was sieved, hand-sorted, leached and scanned with X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF). External dose rates and activity concentrations of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials from 238U, 232Th series and 40K were also measured coupled with a radiological risk assessment. Results showed that the waste was 95% glass and dominated by fine fractions (<11.3 mm) at 43.6%. The fine fraction had pH 7.8, 2.6% moisture content, 123 mg kg-1 Total Dissolved Solids, 37.2 mg kg-1 Dissolved Organic Carbon and 10.5 mg kg-1 fluorides. Compared with Swedish EPA guidelines, the elements As, Cd, Pb and Zn were in hazardous concentrations while Pb leached more than the limits for inert and non-hazardous wastes. With 40K activity concentration up to 3000 Bq kg-1, enhanced external dose rates of 40K were established (0.20 µSv h-1) although no radiological risk was found since both External Hazard Index (Hex) and Gamma Index (Iγ) were <1. The glass dump needs remediation and storage of the waste materials under a safe hazardous waste class 'Bank Account' storage cell as a secondary resource for potential future recycling.

Microtubule architecture depends on a complex network of microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs) that act in concert to modulate microtubule assembly/disassembly and spatial arrangement. In vitro reconstitution of cytoskeleton dynamics coupled to single-molecule fluorescence assays has opened new perspectives to quantify the interaction of MAPs with microtubules. Here, we present a Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy-based assay enabling the characterization of Tau interaction with dynamic microtubules at the single-molecule level. We describe protein sample preparation in flow cells, single-molecule acquisitions by TIRF microscopy, and quantitative analysis of Tau oligomerization states and dwell time on microtubules.

Glass is the favorite material for parenteral packaging because of its physico-chemical properties. Type I borosilicate glass is worldwide use at this scope, but it may have some issues related to breakage, corrosion and delamination that might compromise the drug quality, safety and efficacy. These issues can be mitigated and avoided starting from the appropriate selection of the most suitable raw material at the early stage of the glass container design. In this study, Type I borosilicate glass vials manufactured using two glass tubes having different chemical compositions, were studied and compared in terms of their resistance to corrosion. Testing design was applied with the aim to select the best practice approach comparing different storage simulation conditions: ageing treatment through autoclaving and stability testing (real-time and accelerated). Clear differences were found between the different glass types in terms of hydrolytic and corrosion resistance that highlighted the relation between chemical composition and glass chemical durability. Non-negligible differences were also observed using different storage conditions.

Preventing microorganism colonization on a surface is a great challenge in the conception of medical, food and marine devices. Here, we describe the formation of carbohydrate functionalized glass surfaces with D-glucose, D-galactose and D-mannose and how they efficiently affected the bacterial attachment. The carbohydrate entities were covalently attached to the pre-functionalized surface by click chemistry thanks the copper catalysed alkyl-azide cycloaddition. Water contact angle and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterisations showed a homogeneous and quantitative cycloaddition at the scale of microorganisms. The adhesion assays with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, used as model of opportunistic pathogen, indicated a significant diminution of almost 40% of the bacterial accumulation on glycosidic surfaces with respect to initial surface. This activity was further compared with a surface presenting a simple hydroxyl residue. Exploration of specific interactions through Lectin A deficient Pseudomonas aeruginosa mutant strain provided new evidences that Lectin A was involved in biofilm maturation, rather than bacterial attachment. Subsequently, the determination of surface free energy and the adhesion free energy between surfaces and bacterial cell wall showed that the adhesion was thermodynamically unfavourable.

A new method was developed to analyze the surface count of fibers in a variety of environments. The method entails sampling surfaces with the help of suction to a filter cassette holder containing a cellulose filter. The filters were collapsed using microwave digestion in dilute acid, and the fibers filtered to polycarbonate filters, gilded, and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The method was compared to traditional gel tape sampling as described in International Standards Organization (ISO) standard 16000-27, following analysis with phase contrast microscopy. The methods were compared in industrial environments and in office-type environments, with the concentration range studied spanning from 0.1 to 100,000 fibers/cm². The methods yielded similar results (p < 0.05) in concentrations from 100 to 10,000 cfu/cm², while the filter cassette method gave systematically higher results in high concentrations (>10,000 cfu/cm²) as well as in all office-type environments studied, where the fiber count ranged from 0.1 to 20 fibers/cm². Consequently, we recommend using the new method in working environments where the surface count is more than 100 fibers/cm², as well as in office-type environments where the fiber count is below 10 fibers/cm². It should be noted, however, that a similar limit of quantitation as with the gel tape method (0.1 fibers/cm²) requires sampling a minimum area of 100 × 100 cm² with the fiber cassette method. Using the filter cassette method will require new guide values to be formed for office-type environments, since the results are higher than with the gel tape method. Alternatively, if present guide values or limit values are to be used with the filter cassette method, conventions as to which fiber sizes to count should be set, since SEM analysis in any case will allow for including a larger size range than phase contrast microscopy (PM). We, however, recommend against such an approach, since fibers less than 1 µm in width may not be less harmful by inhalation than larger fibers.

The amount and composition of beach litter was assessed, during spring 2018, at 56 sites along the coast of Alicante Province, on the western Mediterranean Sea. Selected sites covered "natural" (19), "village" (17) and "urban" (20) bathing areas and a total of 10,101 litter items was counted in an area of 201,686 m2. Plastic represented the dominant material with 8345 items, i.e. 82.6% of all debris; paper and cardboard numbered 566 items (i.e. 5.6%); pottery and ceramics 348 (3.4%); metal 325 (3.2%); cloth 231 (2.3%); glass 147 (1.5%); rubber 64 (0.6%); wood 46 (0.5%) and other materials summed 29 items, i.e. 0.3% of all debris. Cigarette butts, 45.6% of total items, were observed at different coastal sites: i.e. 1028 units at natural, 1148 at village and 2431 at urban sites. Despite the efforts of local administrations, which enforced cleaning operations at most sites, litter items were essentially related to beachgoers followed by wastewater discharges and fishing activities.

This paper qualifies, quantifies and localizes seafloor marine debris (SMD) in the Moroccan portion of the Mediterranean Sea. Six scientific trawl surveys were conducted by the Moroccan Institute of Fisheries Research from 2012 to 2015 between Cape Spartel (5°W) and Saidia (2°W), during which a total of 497 kg of SMD has been collected. Statistical analysis show that the mean abundance differed between surveys, generally ranging from 26 ± 68 to 80 ± 133 kg/km2. A typology of SMD indicates that plastic represented 73% of the debris collected, followed by rubber (12%), textile (8%), metal (3%), glass (0.32%), and some unidentified materials (2.70%). Analysis of results shows that the abundance and the distribution of SMD were strongly influenced by the local anthropogenic activities and by rivers inputs. The movements and accumulations in the open sea were also shown to be influenced by the geomorphology and the hydrodynamics of the basin.
