Introduction: zeolites (clinoptilolites) are a family of alluminosilicates and cations clustered to form macro aggregates by small individual cavities. In the medical area they are involved in detoxification mechanisms capturing ions and molecules into their holes. Actually, we classify about 140 types of natural and 150 synthetic zeolites, for specific and selective use. Clinoptilolite is a natural zeolite and it is the most widespread compound in the medical market. Objective: this review analyzes the main fields of zeolite utilization. Methods: we searched Pubmed/Medline using the terms «zeolite» and «clinoptilolite». Results and discussion: in zoothechnology and veterinary medicine zeolite improves the pets' fitness, removes radioactive elements, aflatoxines and poisons. Zeolite displays also antioxidant, whitening, hemostatic and anti-diarrhoic properties, projected in human care. However very scanty clinical studies have been run up to now in immunodeficiency, oncology after chemotherapy and radiotherapy as adjuvants. Conclusions: further clinical investigations are urgently required after this review article publication which updates the state of the art (AU)


Introducción: las zeolitas (clinoptilolitas) son una familia de aluminosilicatos y cationes agrupada para formar agregados macro de pequeñas cavidades individuales. En el área médica están involucrados en los mecanismos de desintoxicación y en capturar iones y moléculas en sus agujeros. En realidad, clasificamos cerca de 140 tipos de zeolitas naturales y 150 sintéticas, para usos específicos y selectivos. La clinoptilolita es una zeolita natural y es el compuesto más extendido en el mercado médico. Objetivo: esta revisión analiza los principales campos de utilización de la zeolita. Métodos: se realizaron búsquedas en Pubmed/Medline usando los términos «zeolita» y «clinoptilolita». Resultados y discusión: en zootecnología y medicina veterinaria la zeolita mejora la condición de la mascota, elimina los elementos radiactivos, las aflatoxinas y los venenos. En el cuidado humano, la zeolita también muestra propiedades antioxidantes, de blanqueamiento, homeostáticas y antidiarreicas. Sin embargo, los estudios clínicos que se han llevado a cabo hasta ahora como adyuvante en inmunodeficiencia y tras la quimioterapia y la radioterapia en oncología son muy escasos. Conclusiones: se requieren con urgencia otras investigaciones clínicas después de esta publicación del artículo que actualicen el estado de la técnica (AU)

Air-collected erionite series minerals from Cappadocia region of Turkey were characterized quantitatively by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Field emission scanning electron microscopy aided identification of fibrous minerals. Quantitative characterization guidelines for positive identification of erionites proposed by Dogan and Dogan (2008) was applied and the modified balance error formula (E%<10) and Mg-content test <0.80 were performed for each analysis. Erionite species computation showed that the mineral is erionite-K and a mean chemical formula is proposed based upon the TEM-EDS results. Among the 60 analyses, 11 passed E% test (18.3%), 33 passed Mg-content test (55.0%), and only 3 passed both E% and Mg-content tests (5.0%). This shows difficulty of quantitative characterization of the erionite series minerals. However, as erionite is the most carcinogenic mineral known and is classified by IARC as a Group-I (human) carcinogen, it requires special attention from the mineralogical community to help establish its true mineralogical properties. Quantitatively characterized erionite data are very scarce in literature. Correctly identified erionite mineral types will be useful to medical researchers in their search to find a possible cure for the deadly disease of mesothelioma.

The effective removal of emerging contaminants of concern (ECCs) such as endocrine-disrupting chemicals, pharmaceutically active compounds, personal care products, and flame retardants is a desirable water treatment goal. In this study, one activated carbon, one carbonaceous resin, and two high-silica zeolites were studied to evaluate their effectiveness for the removal of an ECC mixture from lake water. Adsorption isotherm experiments were performed with a mixture of 28 ECCs at environmentally relevant concentrations ( approximately 200-900 ng/L). Among the tested adsorbents, activated carbon was the most effective, and activated carbon doses typically used for taste and odor control in drinking water (<10 mg/L) were sufficient to achieve a 2-log removal for most of the tested ECCs. The carbonaceous resin was less effective than the activated carbon because this adsorbent had a smaller volume of pores in the size range required for the adsorption of many ECCs ( approximately 6-9A). For the removal of ECC mixture constituents, zeolites were less effective than the carbonaceous adsorbents. Because zeolites contain pores of uniform size and shape, a few of the tested ECCs with matching pore size/shape requirements were well removed, but the adsorptive removal of others was negligible, even at zeolite doses of 100 mg/L. The results of this study demonstrate that effective adsorbents for the removal of a broad spectrum of ECCs from water should exhibit heterogeneity in pore size and shape and a large pore volume in the 6-9A size range.

The removal of free fatty acid (FFA) in waste frying oil by esterification with methanol was conducted using various zeolite catalysts. The ZSM-5 (MFI), mordenite (MOR), faujasite (FAU), beta (BEA) zeolites, and silicalite were employed with different Si/Al molar ratio in the reaction. The effects of acidic properties and pore structure of the zeolite catalysts were discussed relating to the conversion of the FFA. The MFI zeolite induced an improvement of the removal efficiency of FFA by cracking to the FFA in its pore structure due to its narrow pore mouth. The catalytic activity for FFA removal was lowered with decreasing of acid strength of the zeolites. The strong acid sites of zeolites induced the high conversion of FFA comparatively. The acid strength and pore structure of acidic zeolites affected the catalytic activity in FFA removal.

Governments and industries have introduced regulatory measures requiring safety controls to limit asbestos exposure of the general public and asbestos workers. Although erionite is a more potent health hazard mineral than asbestos, it has received far less attention. Precise definition of erionite, types of these fibrous minerals, and most importantly, characterization requirements still raise questions and often lead to arguments and even legal disputes. Many bulk erionite samples used in animal and cell experiments for carcinogenicity are not mineralogically pure. To test this hypothesis, we characterized two erionite standards from Rome, Oregon, and Pine Valley, Nevada, USA. These standards were characterized quantitatively using modern analytical techniques, and one of them, the erionite standard from Rome, Oregon, passed the required tests for positive identification, but the other, the erionite standard from Pine Valley, Nevada, did not. Furthermore, we observed ambiguous definitions, incorrect identifications, and inaccurate reporting of clinical investigations. To address this problem, we established characterization guidelines for positive identification of erionite using a modified balance error formula, and we re-evaluated and re-classified published erionite data from the literature as erionite-Ca, erionite-Na, and erionite-K. If data did not pass either the E% or Mg-content test, then we propose that reference to them in the literature be disregarded. Erionite requires special attention from the mineralogical community to help establish its true carcinogenetic properties. We believe that the characterization guidelines established in this paper will contribute to setting up rules and regulations for evaluation of erionite by regulatory agencies.

Scientific knowledge of how zeolites, a unique classification of microporous aluminosilicates, undergo dissolution in aqueous hydrochloric acid solutions is limited. Understanding the dissolution of zeolites is fundamental to a number of processes occurring in nature and throughout industry. To better understand the dissolution process, experiments were carried out establishing that the Si-to-Al ratio controls zeolite framework dissolution, by which the selective removal of aluminum constrains the removal of silicon. Stoichiometric dissolution is observed for Type 4A zeolite in HCl where the Si-to-Al ratio is equal to 1.0. Framework silicon dissolves completely during Type 4A dissolution and is followed by silicate precipitation. However, for the zeolite analcime which has a Si-to-Al ratio of 2.0 dissolves non-stoichiometrically as the selective removal of aluminum results in partially dissolved silicate particles followed by silicate precipitation. In Type Y zeolite, exhibiting a Si-to-Al ratio of 3.0, there is insufficient aluminum to weaken the structure and cause silicon to dissolve in HCl. Thus, little or no precipitation is observed, and amorphous undissolvable silicate particles remain intact. The initial dissolution rates of Type Y and 4A zeolites demonstrate that dissolution is constrained by the number of available reaction sites, and a selective removal rate parameter is applied to delineate the mechanism of particle dissolution by demonstrating the kinetic influence of the Si-to-Al ratio. Zeolite framework models are constructed and used to undergird the basic dissolution mechanism. The framework models, scanning electron micrographs of partially dissolved crystals, and experimentally measured dissolution rates all demonstrate that a zeolite's Si-to-Al framework ratio plays a universal role in the dissolution mechanism, independent of framework type. Consequently, the unique mechanism of zeolite dissolution has general implications on how petroleum reservoir stimulation treatments should be designed.

A new ultra-high-resolution powder diffractometer for synchrotron radiation has been constructed at beamline BL15XU, SPring-8. The two-axis diffractometer is optimized for high-flux and high-coherent X-ray beams, which are provided by combining a planar undulator and a large offset rotated-inclined Si(111) double-crystal monochromator. The optics design of the diffractometer is based on transmission geometry, which employs a capillary specimen and reflection geometries using a flat-plate specimen. The intensity data are collected using a 2theta step-scan technique in both geometries. The diffractometer can be arranged in a variety of optical configurations, e.g. simple receiving slits, flat crystal analyzer of Ge(111) or Si(111), and in-vacuum-type long horizontal parallel slits. A minimum full width at half-maximum against 2theta was 0.00572 degrees at lambda = 0.63582 A for the (200) reflections from Si powder in the transmission geometry employing the Ge(111) crystal analyzer. A wide temperature range (32-900 K), which is controlled by a He/N(2) gas stream system, is available. 288 structure parameters of a zeolite ZSM-5 sample have been demonstrated to successfully refine with a R(wp) value of 6.96% by a Rietveld analysis of the high-resolution powder diffraction data from a 1 mm-diameter capillary specimen.
