RESUMO

Thus, having become very famous in the cities of Aonia, the one (Tiresias) gave irrefutable responses to those who consulted him. The first to test the authenticity of his words was the blue Lirìope, whom Cefiso had one day pushed into a bend in his current, imprisoned in the waves and raped. When she got pregnant, the beautiful nymph gave birth to a child who aroused love from birth, and called him Narcissus. Asked if the little boy would see the distant days of late old age, the soothsayer replied: "If he doesn't know himself." For a long time the prediction seemed meaningless, but then the outcome of things, the type of death and the strange passion confirmed it. from "The Metamorphosis" (Ovidio).

RESUMO

In these last decades, emotions and feelings, neglected for centuries by experimental sciences, have become the topic of extensive neuroscientific research. Currently, love, the most typically human feeling, can be viewed as the result of different phases (steps), each regulated by evolutionary well-conserved and integrated neural substrates. We have proposed that the early stage, generally called romantic love, is the result of the activation of the brain limbic structures regulating fear/anxiety reactions leading to changes of major neurotransmitters, such as increased monoamine levels and decreased serotonin concentrations. The second stage of love is mainly underlain by the structures regulating the attachment system and involving oxytocin and vasopressin neuropeptides and neurotrophins. This would explain why the positive effects of love can be extremely beneficial for both mental and physical health. However, available data are still limited, and the proposed models, although supported by converging data, should be considered speculative and oversimplified. The hope is that neuroscience will permit to shed light on love, one of the most intriguing, and still largely unknown mysteries of human nature.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To identify pregnant women's views and attitudes towards maternal immunisation in Panama based on in-depth interviews and focus groups. SETTING: Two main urban centres in Panama (San Miguelito and Panama City). PARTICIPANTS: Fifty-six pregnant women from Panama City (n=29) and San Miguelito (n=27). METHODS: In-depth interviews and focus groups were conducted, audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using a deductive-inductive approach. RESULTS: Our findings suggest that this population perceives vaccination as a key component of maternal healthcare, not an elective part of it. The pregnant women interviewed disclosed a heightened perception of vulnerability to infectious diseases. For this reason, safety and effectiveness of maternal vaccines were closely associated for many participants (a vaccine was perceived as safe if it was effective against disease). Refusal of maternal vaccination was strongly associated with parental negligence. Participants reported the participation of husbands and partners in the decision-making around their health. Most participants reported high information-seeking behaviour, particularly online; many interviewees confirmed any information obtained online with their healthcare professionals (HCPs). Vaccine recommendations from HCPs appeared to be one of the main predictors of maternal immunisations among the sample interviewed. While acceptability of maternal vaccines was high in this sample, some pregnant women expressed concerns and doubts (e.g., that maternal vaccines could cause miscarriages) which require attention. Finally, many participants reported difficulties in accessing maternal vaccination, pointing to financial and physical barriers. CONCLUSIONS: The acceptability of maternal immunisation was high among the interviewed women. The pregnant women's receptiveness to maternal vaccinations, even when information provided was limited, is suggestive of high levels of trust in HCPs. Even so, HCPs and health officials should remain alert to apprehensions expressed by pregnant women. Many participants reported struggles in accessing maternal vaccination, pointing to issues that merit further examination.

RESUMO

Worksite health and well-being initiatives will ideally be integrated with employers' efforts to address diversity, equity and inclusion issues. Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) include race, class, community health, income and other variables that companies can play a role in ameliorating. As much as spirituality is commonly espoused as a component of a holistic approach to health promotion, making space to discuss faith and health remains an uncommon strategy in the workplace wellness movement. Recognizing the value on investment (VOI) in wellness has eclipsed a return on investment as a driver of an employer's well-being strategy. This editorial argues that making space for learning about faith and health will intersect in vital ways with anti-racism work, diversity programs and similar efforts to eliminate health inequities, address SDOH and bolster the VOI of worksite well-being initiatives. A fictional dialogue between executives is used to review these issues and related literature.

RESUMO

Whether mobile phones benefit or sabotage close relationships has been a persistent subject of debate in media and communication studies. Because previous studies have demonstrated contrasting findings, further studies on this topic are required. Based on media richness theory and social penetration theory, this study investigated the direct and indirect associations between mobile communication and relationship quality (i.e., depth, support, and conflict) in romantic relationships. A survey of 1,000 university students in China revealed that relationship depth was positively predicted by mobile phone calls and negatively predicted by mobile short messages. Mobile WeChat had dialectical effects, as it reinforced relationship depth and support, but increased conflict. Regarding indirect effects, communication quality online positively mediated the effects of mobile phone calls on relationship quality and negatively mediated the effects of mobile short messages and Weibo on relationship quality. Moreover, passionate love attitudes (PLAs) and gender negatively moderated the effects of mobile phone calls on relationship depth, indicating that females and individuals who had stronger PLAs had lower relationship quality when they used mobile phone calls to interact with their romantic partners. The moderating effects of PLA were extended to the indirect relationship between phone calls and relationship quality through communication quality. Overall, this study developed a typology to examine mobile relational communication by integrating the quantity (i.e., mobile use frequencies) and quality of mobile communication, as well as personal attitudes in close relationships.

RESUMO

Dating violence is a significant problem among adolescents. It encompasses a variety of violent behavior, from verbal abuse to physical and sexual abuse, from threats to rape and murder. Among young people, idealization of love and romantic myths are very common as a consequence of our culture and society, which lead them to develop dysfunctional relationships that somehow favor and facilitate partner violence and sexist ideas in daily life. Education is the basic tool to eradicate discrimination and violence against women. The objective of this study is to explore the false myths of romantic love in adolescents and their related factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 16-19-year-old teenagers (n = 180), through questionnaires and by employing the romantic love myths scale, the ambivalent sexism inventory, and the love attitudes scale. Adolescents accepted to a greater degree the love myths associated with idealization than those related to abuse with scale values of Med = 2.72, SD = 0.55, and Med = 1.34, SD = 0.68, respectively. Designed models predict love idealization on the basis of benevolent sexism (ß = 0.03; CI 95% = 0.021-0.039), religion (ß = 0.198; CI 95% = 0.047-0.349), passionate love (ß = 0.038; CI 95% = 0.015-0.061), practical love (ß = 0.024; CI 95% = 0.001-0.047), and friendly love (ß = 0.036; CI 95% = 0.014-0.058). Hostile sexism and undergraduate studies were associated with the myths that relate love and abuse (ß = 0.19; CI 95% = 0.007-0.031, ß = 0.208; CI 95% = 0.001-0.414, respectively).

RESUMO

This paper describes the psychoanalytic treatment of a woman patient during the first six months of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the setting was profoundly disrupted and was transferred from in-person psychoanalysis to telephone sessions. Drawing on Bleger's formulations on the construction of the analytic frame and on André Green's on the function of the framing structure in the construction and elaboration of phantasy life, the case study shows how, in the absence of the physicality of the setting, the most primitive anxieties about the symbiotic relationship with the mother were expressed and contained in the transference and countertransference in the analysis. The author offers some considerations about the notion of "background of the uncanny", derived from Yolanda Gampel, which draws attention to the challenges when both patient and analyst are inserted into the same traumatic wider context. It is suggested that the production of an art object by the patient during this period represents a step in the elaboration of the work of mourning and towards symbolization.

RESUMO

The impulse of love at first sight (ILFS) is a well known but rarely studied phenomenon. Despite the privacy of these emotions, knowing how attractive one finds a partner may be beneficial for building a future relationship in an open society, where partners are accepting each other. Therefore, this study adopted the electrocardiograph (ECG) signal collection method, which has been widely used in wearable devices, to collect signals and conduct corresponding recognition analysis. First, we used photos to induce ILFS and obtained ECG signals from 46 healthy students (24 women and 22 men) in a laboratory. Second, we extracted the time- and frequency-domain features of the ECG signals and performed a nonlinear analysis. We subsequently used a feature selection algorithm and a set of classifiers to classify the features. Combined with the sequence floating forward selection and random forest algorithms, the identification accuracy of the ILFS was 69.07%. The sensitivity, specificity, F1, and area under the curve of the other parameters were all greater than 0.6. The classification of ECG signals according to their characteristics demonstrated that the signals could be recognized. Through the information provided by the ECG signals, it can be determined whether the participant possesses the desire to fall in love, helping to determine the right partner in the fastest time; this is conducive to establishing a romantic relationship.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Rwanda has markedly increased the nation's contraceptive use in a short period of time, tripling contraceptive prevalence in just 5 years between 2005 and 2010. An integral aspect of family planning programs is the interactions between family planning providers and clients. This study aims to understand the client-provider relationship in the Rwandan family planning program and to also examine barriers to those relationships. METHODS: This qualitative study in Rwanda utilized convenience sampling to include eight focus group discussions with family planning providers, both family planning nurses and community health workers, as well as in-depth interviews with 32 experienced modern contraceptive users. Study participants were drawn from the two districts in Rwanda with the highest and lowest modern contraceptive rates, Musanze and Nyamasheke, respectively Data analysis was guided by the thematic content approach, Atlas.ti 8 was utilized for coding the transcripts and collating the coding results, and Microsoft Excel for analyzing the data within code. RESULTS: Data analysis revealed that, despite workplace related challenges - including inadequate staffing, training, and resources, relationships between providers and clients are strong. Family planning providers work hard to understand, learn from, and support clients in their initiation and sustained use of contraceptives. CONCLUSION: Given the existing context of purposeful efforts on the part of family planning providers to build relationships with their clients, if the current level of government support for family planning service provision is enhanced, Rwanda will likely sustain many current users of contraception and engage even more Rwandans in contraceptive services in the future.

RESUMO

In this paper, we propose a vision of the role of parent/caregiver with children affected by a rare disease. This vision is rooted in data obtained from our own research; however, our analysis and interpretation of this data have been subsequently checked against existing theoretical models. The research aims to explore how parents who look after children with a rare disease experience their role as caregivers and how they assimilate their role identity in this task. Semi-structured interviews were performed with parents of 10 children, and a qualitative data analysis was conducted using grounded theory. We have identified ten main categories using a grounded theory approach: stress, disorientation, insecurity, isolation, faith, trust, attention, communication with professionals, private proactivity and public proactivity. Our results also show that when parents perceive a greater burden due to looking after a child with a rare disease, the result is a change in the usual parental role. In our contribution, we offer a general outline of how parents build a role identity centred on caring for a child with a rare disease. We posit that this role identity is the outcome of the parents' success or failure in gradually overcoming fear through love. We have conceptualized this process as navigating between love and fear.

RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to investigate (a) the neural correlates of a love induction task (LIT) including listening to love-related songs and thinking about the romantic relationship, and (b) the effects of romantic love on the emotional processing of love-unrelated stimuli during a passive viewing task. The EEG was recorded in two groups of university students: people in love (Love Group, LG, N = 22, 19 F) and people not in love (Control Group, CG, N = 20, 15 F). The LIT induced higher pleasantness and arousal in the LG than in the CG, as well as higher alpha activity in occipital-right electrodes, suggesting active mental imagery and internal focused attention. During the picture viewing task, the LG displayed larger N1 amplitudes than the CG in response to unpleasant pictures, and lower amplitudes of the late positive potential to both pleasant and unpleasant pictures at frontal sites. Overall, these results suggest an early attentional modulation of the neural responses to unpleasant, mood-incongruent cues, followed by an implicit emotional down-regulation of arousing stimuli, which might have important implications for everyday attitudes and behaviors.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Suffering is a common experience in palliative care. In our study, we aimed to determine the effect of 5-min mindfulness of love on suffering and the spiritual quality of life of palliative care patients. METHODS: We conducted a parallel-group, blinded, randomized controlled study at the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), Malaysia from February 2019 to April 2019. Sixty adult palliative care patients with an overall suffering score of 4/10 or above based on the Suffering Pictogram were recruited and randomly assigned to either the 5-min mindfulness of love group (N = 30) or the 5-min supportive listening group (N = 30). RESULTS: There were statistically significant improvements in the overall suffering score (mean difference = -2.9, CI = -3.7 to -2.1, t = -7.268, p = 0.000) and the total FACIT-Sp-12 score (mean difference = 2.9, CI = 1.5 to 4.3, t = 4.124, p = 0.000) in the intervention group compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: The results provided evidence that 5-min mindfulness of love could affect the actual state of suffering and the spiritual quality of life of palliative care patients.

RESUMO

LAY ABSTRACT: For many women, adulthood involves becoming a mother. Knowledge of how motherhood is experienced by autistic women is currently poor. Poor knowledge has a range of negative consequences and can lead to inappropriate support. In this study, nine autistic women were interviewed about their experiences of motherhood. Seven of the nine mothers had an officially diagnosed autistic child, the final two mothers also suspected at least one of their children to be autistic. Systematic in-depth analysis of interview transcripts identified a range of common themes. Participants largely experienced motherhood as joyful, rewarding, and enjoyable, though managing children's needs had a profound personal impact. Participants reflected on the need for self-care and self-acceptance, resulting in personal growth and adaptation. Participants also spoke of strong bonds, feelings of intense connection, and a range of shared experiences with their children. It was also clear that autistic motherhood is associated with a series of challenges unlikely to be experienced by non-autistic mothers, including the necessity of negotiating misunderstandings from others. The findings demonstrate that, generally, professionals need to be better educated on how autism presents in adulthood, including the fact that autistic women often engage in behaviour to mask their true self. Professionals need to know that there is potential for mismatching between emotional experience and facial expression, that autistic women have sensory needs (especially in pregnancy). Professionals frequently struggle to effectively take the needs and perspectives of autistic mothers into account, resulting in profoundly negative consequences for the mother.

RESUMO

Given the increasing attention ambivalence is receiving from the psychological community, it must be asked if pollsters' (routinely) dichotomous political opinion surveys are missing something crucial. To determine if there is any legitimacy to this question, undergraduates attending a Liberal Arts college in Southern California were asked to rate their level of agreement/disagreement to 28 statements regarding President Trump in two studies, with the items drawn from actual Quinnipiac (Q) and Brookings Institute (BI) surveys. To quantify ambivalence participants were told they could mark one or two responses per item, with double-responses serving as a measure of ambivalence. In Study 1, mean Trump approval ratings divided along party lines, and were consistent with the Q and BI findings. Nonetheless, approximately 40% of participants registered some level of ambivalence across all political-party affiliations, with those defining themselves as Neither Democrats (DEMs) nor Republicans (REPs) showing the greatest degree of ambivalence. In Study 2, ambivalence towards President Trump was examined looking at both party affiliation and political ideology (Conservative, Moderate, and Liberal). Again, roughly 40% of participants displayed some level of ambivalence, with greater degrees of ambivalence for Independents relative to DEMs and REPs, and Moderates relative to Liberals. Given research indicating that ambivalence is associated with delayed decision making and decisions based on "in the moment" contextual information, our findings our suggestive: if political opinion pollsters do not assess ambivalence, they may be missing information on a fair-sized demographic that could influence an election based on negative information (real or fictitious) surfacing only days before an election… as it did in 2016.
