Objetivo: Nuestro principal objetivo es el de comparar la capacidad para detectar las drusas del disco óptico (DDO) utilizando diversas técnicas de imágenes no-invasivas, incluida la novedosa técnica de imagen de retromodo (RMI). Como segundo objetivo analizamos las características morfológicas de las DDO bajo esta última técnica. Materiales y métodos: Este estudio incluyó un total de 7 pacientes con DDO bilaterales, obteniendo un total de 14 ojos analizados. Se utilizaron técnicas no invasivas de imágenes multimodales, que incluyeron fotografía multicolor del fondo de ojo (MC), reflectancia en infrarrojo (NIR), autofluorescencia en luz verde y en luz azul (G-FAF y B-FAF, respectivamente) y RMI. La FAF se utilizó como el método principal para el diagnóstico de DDO. Dos observadores realizaron las comparaciones, obteniendo las tasas de detección de cada uno de los métodos. Las mediciones cuantitativas de las DDO incluyeron el número, el perímetro (P) y el área (A) de las DDO identificadas mediante la técnica de RMI. Resultado: La edad promedio de los pacientes incluidos fue de 49,28±23,16 años; 5 de los 7 pacientes fueron de sexo masculino. La técnica de RMI pudo detectar DDO en todos los casos, con una sensibilidad del 100%, en comparación con MC (sensibilidad del 60,71%), NIR (sensibilidad del 60,71%), B-FAF (sensibilidad del 100%), G-FAF (sensibilidad del 100%). RMI fue la única técnica de imagen capaz de evaluar morfológica y cuantitativamente las DDO. Conclusiones: RMI es una prometedora modalidad no-invasiva de imagen para diagnosticar DDO superficiales, proporcionando información valiosa sobre la distribución, la ubicación y el tamaño de estas. Por lo tanto, mediante nuestros resultados sugerimos la incorporación de la novedosa técnica de RMI como una herramienta complementaria para el diagnóstico y el seguimiento de DDO en combinación con los otros métodos de imagen multimodales.(AU)


Objective: We aimed to compare the detectability of optic disc drusen (ODD), using various non-invasive imaging techniques, including the novel retro-mode imaging (RMI), as well as to analyze the morphological characteristics of ODD on RMI. Methods: This study involved 7 patients with bilateral ODD, totaling 14 eyes. Multimodal imaging techniques, including multicolor fundus photography (MC), near-infrared reflectance (NIR), green and blue light fundus autofluorescence (G-FAF and B-FAF, respectively), and RMI were used to examine the eyes. FAF was used as the primary method of identifying ODD, and each method's detection rate was compared by two observers. Quantitative measurements of ODD included the number of ODD visualized by the RMI technique, the perimeter (P) and area (A) of ODD were identified. Results: The average age of the patients included was 49.28±23.16 years, with 5 of the 7 being men. RMI was able to detect ODD in all cases, with a sensitivity of 100%, compared to MC (sensitivity 60.71%), NIR (sensitivity 60.71%), B-FAF (sensitivity 100%), G-FAF (sensitivity 100%). RMI was the only imaging technique capable of assessing ODD morphology and quantifying ODD. Conclusions: RMI is a promising imaging modality for diagnosing superficial ODD, providing valuable information on the distribution, location, and size of ODD. We suggest the incorporation of RMI as a complementary tool for diagnosing and monitoring ODD in combination with other multimodal imaging methods.(AU)

Los cuerpos de agua dulce albergan una gran cantidad de microorganismos cruciales para los ecosistemas acuáticos, incluyendo las cianobacterias. Sin embargo, su proliferación descontrolada representa riesgos para la salud humana, animal y el medio ambiente. Esta revisión destaca los efectos adversos de las cianobacterias y sus toxinas, así como los métodos de detección y prevención. La gestión efectiva de estos eventos requiere una comprensión integral de los factores ambientales y un enfoque preventivo en el tratamiento del agua. Se necesitan estrategias multifacéticas que incluyan la monitorización continua, medidas de tratamiento adecuadas y políticas de conservación ambiental para abordar este desafío


Freshwater bodies host a large number of microorganisms crucial to aquatic ecosystems, including cyanobacteria. However, their uncontrolled proliferation poses risks to human, animal and environmental health. This review highlights the adverse effects of cyanobacteria and their toxins, as well as detection and prevention methods. Effective management of these events requires a comprehensive understanding of environmental factors and a preventive approach to water treatment. Multifaceted strategies including continuous monitoring, appropriate treatment measures and environmental conservation policies are needed to address this challenge

Cyantraniliprole (CY), an anthranilic diamide insecticide widely used in grape farming for controlling various sucking pests, poses ecological concerns, particularly when applied as soil drenching due to the formation of more toxic and persistent metabolites. This study established the dissipation and degradation mechanisms of CY in grape rhizosphere soil using high-resolution Orbitrap-LC/MS analysis. The persistence of CY residues beyond 60 days was observed, with dissipation following biphasic first + first-order kinetics and a half-life of 15 to 21 days. The degradation mechanism of CY in the soil was elucidated, with identified metabolites such as IN-J9Z38, IN-JCZ38, IN-N7B69, and IN-QKV54. Notably, CY was found to predominantly convert to the highly persistent metabolite IN-J9Z38, raising environmental concerns. The impact of CY residues on soil enzyme activity was investigated, revealing a negative effect on dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, and acid phosphatase activity, indicating significant implications for phosphorous mineralization and soil health. Furthermore, bacterial isolates were obtained from CY-enriched soil, with five isolates (CY3, CY4, CY9, CY11, and CY20) demonstrating substantial degradation potential, ranging from 66 to 92% of CY residues. These results indicate that the identified bacteria hold potential for commercial use in addressing pesticide residue contamination in soil through bioremediation techniques.

In recent years, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) has emerged as an essential component of the routine tasks that people engage in on a daily basis. However, over use of it resulted in environmental buildup that contaminated aquatic habitats and human health. Biodegradation is the most effective way for controlling pollution caused by synthetic plastic waste in a sustainable manner. In the present study, the LDPE degrading bacterial strain was screened from gut of Earthworms collected from plastic waste dumped area Mettur dam, Salem district, Tamil Nadu, India. The LDPE degrading bacterial strain was screened and identified genotypically. The LDPE degrading Bacillus gaemokensis strain SSR01 was submitted in NCBI. The B. gaemokensis strain SSR01 bacterial isolate degraded LDPE film after 14 days of incubation and demonstrated maximum weight loss of up to 4.98%. The study of deteriorated film using attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared revealed the presence of a degraded product. The degradation of LDPE film by B. gaemokensis strain SSR01 was characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy analysis for surface alterations. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy test confirmed that the broken-down LDPE film had basic carbon reduction. The present study of LDPE flim biodegradation by B. gaemokensis strain SSR01 has acted as a suitable candidate and will help in decreasing plastic waste.

Forest carbon sequestration capacity in China remains uncertain due to underrepresented tree demographic dynamics and overlooked of harvest impacts. In this study, we employ a process-based biogeochemical model to make projections by using national forest inventories, covering approximately 415,000 permanent plots, revealing an expansion in biomass carbon stock by 13.6 ± 1.5 Pg C from 2020 to 2100, with additional sink through augmentation of wood product pool (0.6-2.0 Pg C) and spatiotemporal optimization of forest management (2.3 ± 0.03 Pg C). We find that statistical model might cause large bias in long-term projection due to underrepresentation or neglect of wood harvest and forest demographic changes. Remarkably, disregarding the repercussions of harvesting on forest age can result in a premature shift in the timing of the carbon sink peak by 1-3 decades. Our findings emphasize the pressing necessity for the swift implementation of optimal forest management strategies for carbon sequestration enhancement.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) is an environmental contaminant brining high concerns due to its higher toxicity and mobility in comparison with trivalent chromium Cr(III). Cr (VI) has been linked with several adverse health effects, including respiratory diseases, lung cancer, and skin irritation. The primary sources of it in the environment are industrial activities.Most of the time, fly ash made of lignite can release Cr(VI) when it comes into contact with water in an aquatic environment. The objective of this study is the investigation of Cr (VI) concentration in leachates of fly ash and marl mixtures and the determination of its solubility under different pH conditions. Samples of fly ash were collected from the Power Plant of Agios Dimitrios. Additionally, samples of marl were collected from the mine of South Field, and both samples were mixed and prepared in in different proportions (% w.t.). The leaching experiments were carried out according to the EN-12457/1-4 (2003) standard under different pH conditions and chemical analysis of the leachates were performed by spectrophotometry with diphenylcarbazide (DPC). The environmental footprint of Cr (VI) in the study area was significant, especially in mixtures containing higher concentrations of fly ash. A critical pH range between 6 to 12 is observed. At acidic pH values, a high release of Cr (VI) was observed, while at the mentioned critical values (pH 10-12), a gradual decrease in its leachability was noticed. The high concentrations of Cr (VI) in the industrial area studied require immediate actions in terms of managing and limiting the potential hazardous impacts on the environment and by extension on the public health by developing appropriate prevention strategies.

In recent years, green synthesis methods of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been attractive because of the more facile, cheaper, and appropriate features associated with biomolecules in MNPs biosynthesis. This research represented an easy, fast, and environmentally friendly method to biosynthesis of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONPs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by the Satureja hortensis leaf extract as stabilizer and reducer. The SPIONPs synthesized in co-precipitation method. The biosynthesized SPIONPs and AgNPs were studied their antifungal effects against three Botryosphaeriaceae plant pathogens, Botryosphaeria dothidea, Diplodia seriata, and Neofusicoccum parvum. UV-visible spectra (UV-Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (Fe-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM) analyses were used to evaluate the physicochemical properties and verify the formation of green synthesized SPIONPs and AgNPs. UV-Vis spectra revealed absorption peaks at 243 and 448 nm for SPIONs and 436 nm for AgNPs, respectively. Microscopic and XRD analysis showed that SPIONPs and AgNPs was found spherical in shape with an average particle size of SPIONPs and AgNPs 10 and 12 nm, respectively. The antifungal test against Botryosphaeriaceae species showed that SPIONPs and AgNPs possess antifungal properties against B. dothidea, D. seriata, and N. parvum. However, AgNPs exhibits greater antifungal activity than SPIONPs. The results of the cytotoxicity tests of SPIONs and AgNPs on the MCF-7 cell line showed that AgNPs was significantly more cytotoxic towards the MCF-7 cell line, whereas no significant cytotoxic effect was recorded by SPIONs. Therefore, these biosynthesized MNPs could be substituted for toxic fungicides that are extensively applied in agriculture and contribute to environmental health and food safety.

More than a quarter of the world's tropical forests are exploited for timber1. Logging impacts biodiversity in these ecosystems, primarily through the creation of forest roads that facilitate hunting for wildlife over extensive areas. Forest management certification schemes such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) are expected to mitigate impacts on biodiversity, but so far very little is known about the effectiveness of FSC certification because of research design challenges, predominantly limited sample sizes2,3. Here we provide this evidence by using 1.3 million camera-trap photos of 55 mammal species in 14 logging concessions in western equatorial Africa. We observed higher mammal encounter rates in FSC-certified than in non-FSC logging concessions. The effect was most pronounced for species weighing more than 10 kg and for species of high conservation priority such as the critically endangered forest elephant and western lowland gorilla. Across the whole mammal community, non-FSC concessions contained proportionally more rodents and other small species than did FSC-certified concessions. The first priority for species protection should be to maintain unlogged forests with effective law enforcement, but for logged forests our findings provide convincing data that FSC-certified forest management is less damaging to the mammal community than is non-FSC forest management. This study provides strong evidence that FSC-certified forest management or equivalently stringent requirements and controlling mechanisms should become the norm for timber extraction to avoid half-empty forests dominated by rodents and other small species.

CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology, as a highly efficient genome editing method, has been extensively employed in the realm of animal husbandry for genetic improvement. With its remarkable efficiency and precision, this technology has revolutionized the field of animal husbandry. Currently, CRISPR/Cas9-based gene knockout, gene knock-in and gene modification techniques are widely employed to achieve precise enhancements in crucial production traits of livestock and poultry species. In this review, we summarize the operational principle and development history of CRISPR/Cas9 technology. Additionally, we highlight the research advancements utilizing this technology in muscle growth and development, fiber growth, milk quality composition, disease resistance breeding, and animal welfare within the livestock and poultry sectors. Our aim is to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the application of CRISPR/Cas9 technology in gene editing for livestock and poultry.

Urban environmental factors such as air quality, heat islands, and access to greenspaces and community amenities impact public health. Some vulnerable populations such as low-income groups, children, older adults, new immigrants, and visible minorities live in areas with fewer beneficial conditions, and therefore, face greater health risks. Planning and advocating for equitable healthy urban environments requires systematic analysis of reliable spatial data to identify where vulnerable populations intersect with positive or negative urban/environmental characteristics. To facilitate this effort in Canada, we developed HealthyPlan.City ( https://healthyplan.city/ ), a freely available web mapping platform for users to visualize the spatial patterns of built environment indicators, vulnerable populations, and environmental inequity within over 125 Canadian cities. This tool helps users identify areas within Canadian cities where relatively higher proportions of vulnerable populations experience lower than average levels of beneficial environmental conditions, which we refer to as Equity priority areas. Using nationally standardized environmental data from satellite imagery and other large geospatial databases and demographic data from the Canadian Census, HealthyPlan.City provides a block-by-block snapshot of environmental inequities in Canadian cities. The tool aims to support urban planners, public health professionals, policy makers, and community organizers to identify neighborhoods where targeted investments and improvements to the local environment would simultaneously help communities address environmental inequities, promote public health, and adapt to climate change. In this paper, we report on the key considerations that informed our approach to developing this tool and describe the current web-based application.

Understanding the environmental health and safety of nanomaterials (NanoEHS) is essential for the sustained development of nanotechnology. Although extensive research over the past two decades has elucidated the phenomena, mechanisms, and implications of nanomaterials in cellular and organismal models, the active remediation of the adverse biological and environmental effects of nanomaterials remains largely unexplored. Inspired by recent developments in functional amyloids for biomedical and environmental engineering, this work shows their new utility as metallothionein mimics in the strategically important area of NanoEHS. Specifically, metal ions released from CuO and ZnO nanoparticles are sequestered through cysteine coordination and electrostatic interactions with beta-lactoglobulin (bLg) amyloid, as revealed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and molecular dynamics simulations. The toxicity of the metal oxide nanoparticles is subsequently mitigated by functional amyloids, as validated by cell viability and apoptosis assays in vitro and murine survival and biomarker assays in vivo. As bLg amyloid fibrils can be readily produced from whey in large quantities at a low cost, the study offers a crucial strategy for remediating the biological and environmental footprints of transition metal oxide nanomaterials.

Omics analyses collectively refer to the possibility of profiling genetic variants, RNA, epigenetic markers, proteins, lipids, and metabolites. The most common analytical approaches used for detecting molecules present within biofluids related to metabolism are vibrational spectroscopy techniques, represented by infrared, Raman, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies and mass spectrometry (MS). Omics-based assessments utilizing MS are rapidly expanding and being applied to various scientific disciplines and clinical settings. Most of the omics instruments are operated by specialists in dedicated laboratories; however, the development of miniature portable omics has made the technology more available to users for field applications. Variations in molecular information gained from omics approaches are useful for evaluating human health following environmental exposure and the development and progression of numerous diseases. As MS technology develops so do statistical and machine learning methods for the detection of molecular deviations from personalized metabolism, which are correlated to altered health conditions, and they are intended to provide a multi-disciplinary overview for researchers interested in adding multiomic analysis to their current efforts. This includes an introduction to mass spectrometry-based omics technologies, current state-of-the-art capabilities and their respective strengths and limitations for surveying molecular information. Furthermore, we describe how knowledge gained from these assessments can be applied to personalized medicine and diagnostic strategies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Clearly defining and measuring neighborhood socioeconomic status (nSES) is a key first step in achieving environmental justice, as the disproportionate distribution of environmental hazards and access to resources is heavily influenced by socioeconomic factors. This scoping review explores the definition of neighborhoods, measurement of neighborhood socioeconomic status (nSES), and studies that evaluated the association between nSES and child health in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. RECENT FINDINGS: We identified 4112 articles published on US pediatric populations between 2013 and 2022. We identified 170 distinct indicators across seven broad domains of nSES used to create 121 different measures of nSES across the 206 publications included in this review. While there is considerable interest in nSES and children's health, there is also substantial variation in the measurement of neighborhood as a geographic unit and nSES as a construct. We observed methodological challenges related to the identification of neighborhood boundaries, indicator selection, and nSES measure definition(s). We discuss common pitfalls in neighborhood research that can complicate identifying, targeting, and resolving environmental injustices. Lastly, we put forward a series of recommendations to reduce measurement error and improve inference, in addition to reporting recommendations for neighborhoods and health research that can aid in improving our understanding of pathways between neighborhood context and child health, inform policy development, and allocate resources to achieve environmental justice.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify the effectiveness of a mobile application-based home care nursing service in improving patient quality of life and healthy lifestyle and reducing the family burden. METHODS: This study was a clinical trial with a pre- and post-test control group design. The accessible population in this study was post-discharge patients from general hospitals in West Kalimantan and East Kalimantan, Indonesia, who required home care nursing. We allocated a selected sample of 40 people to the intervention group and 40 people to the control group using a randomized block design. We gave mobile application-based home care nursing to the intervention group and community health nursing care to the control group. This study was conducted in 10 months (January-October 2022). We measure the patient quality of life, healthy lifestyle, and family burden before and 3 months after the intervention. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the post-test quality of life between the two groups (p = 0.187), but there was a significant difference in the psychological (p = 0.014) and environmental health (p = 0.021) domain of quality of life. There was no significant difference in the post-test of a healthy lifestyle between the two groups (p = 0.083). There was a significant difference in the post-test family burden between the two groups (p = 0.015). CONCLUSION: Mobile Application-Based Home Care Nursing is effective in improving patient quality of life in the psychological and environmental health domains and reducing the family burden for post-discharge patients.

This study analyses the impact of GDP per capita, domestic credit, savings, and population on the environment in Pakistan from 1995 to 2019. The country has consistently been ranked eighth, fifth, and eight as an environmentally vulnerable nation from 1998 to 2017, 1999 to 2018, and 2000 to 2019, respectively. Therefore, the study explores the role of environmental awareness as a potential strategy for making peace with nature. Findings of the ARDL bounds testing approach confirm the long-run cointegration among variables of concern. In further assessment, the study determines that increased per capita income is detrimental to environmental quality in the long run. However, in the short run, it shows a favourable impact. On the other hand, domestic credit worsens the environment in the long and short runs. However, savings are positively insignificant in this regard. Furthermore, the total population significantly harms the environment in the long and short run. Fortunately, environmental awareness has emerged as a key solution to environmental degradation in Pakistan. Findings show that an increase in the dissemination of environmental awareness through the Internet, mobile, and landline phones, as well as by increasing education expenditures, mitigates the populations' detrimental impact on the environment and improves environmental quality in the long run.

While substantial progress has been made in improving water and sanitation services in low- and middle-income countries, aligned basic services such as greywater, stormwater, and solid waste management have progressed little in recent decades. Data was collected in Khulna city, Bangladesh via a household survey (n = 192) of low-income areas exploring domestic water use and greywater volumes, characteristics, and disposal practices. Most households (71%) use a piped water supply for domestic purposes, supplemented by seasonal rainwater harvesting (26%) and greywater use (13%). Of the total water used by households (mean: 594 L/household/day and equivalent to 116 L/person/day), approximately 58% becomes greywater through bathing, dishwashing, religious practices, handwashing, laundry, and mopping. Greywater produced ranges from 61-1274 L/household/day, with a mean of 345 L/household/day and equivalent to 78.4 L/person/day. Greywater characteristics vary depending on the activity, individual behaviours and any products used during cooking, bathing, or cleaning. After generation, households dispose greywater to open drains (67%), nearby waterbodies (17%) directly to the ground (9%), or decentralised wastewater treatment system (7%). Without services for greywater management, greywater disposal may have considerable public and environmental health implications, necessitating careful attention and oversight from service-providers and stakeholders beyond the household-level.

Food Systems and One Health are two approaches increasingly known for the holistic perspective they bring when addressing the issues that concern them: food and health. This systematic literature review aims to explore the evidence for using these approaches in a concerted manner to better manage zoonoses. By zoonoses management, we refer to improving the ability to address current zoonoses as well as preventing future ones. A total of 98 scientific articles were screened, of which 29 were considered eligible due to their focus on operationalizing each approach to help address zoonoses, as well as a combination of the two. Most articles implement One Health to prevent zoonoses by guiding stakeholders in concerted and participatory decision-making processes. However, the One Health approach can also be adopted via data modelling. Several articles refer to the monitoring and evaluation process of One Health initiatives to prevent zoonoses and discuss best practices to successfully implement the approach. Contrastingly, only three studies adopt a Food System approach to manage zoonoses, despite the profound connections existing between our food systems and the emergence of zoonotic risks. We conclude that there is a lack of integration between the One Health and Food System approaches to manage zoonoses. We also show that experts call for integration, so that not only human, animal, plant, and environmental health are considered, but also the socio-economic trade-offs when monitoring and developing strategies to manage zoonoses. This can be reversed, enabling zoonotic risks to be addressed when planning for our food systems of tomorrow.
