RESUMO

Sickness absence is a major concern in public health, affecting individuals, businesses, and society. Developing efficient sickness absence policies could help reduce sickness absence. A key aspect of these policies concerns the financial compensation provided to absent employees, including its amount and the length of time it is offered. This study addresses how financial incentives, like salary reductions, might influence sickness absence. For this purpose, we first develop a model to estimate the sensitivity of employees to a financial incentive using a large dataset consisting of approximately six million sickness cases. We then perform a simulation study to determine the effect of similar incentives at different moments and for varying sensitivities. Our findings indicate that financial incentives can notably shorten the duration of sickness absence and decrease its associated costs, particularly when such incentives are implemented early in the absence period. Incentives implemented later have less impact on absence duration, but can still reduce the overall cost. The results of this study can be used by healthcare professionals and employers in the design and evaluation of diverse sickness absence policies.

BACKGROUND: Nine in every thousand children born in the United Kingdom have congenital heart disease, and 250,000 adults are living with the condition. This study aims to investigate the associations between congenital heart disease and educational outcomes among school-aged children in Scotland. METHODS: Routine health and education databases were linked to produce a cohort of all singleton children born in Scotland and attending a local authority run primary, secondary, or special school in Scotland at some point between 2009 and 2013. Children with congenital heart disease within this cohort were compared with children unaffected by congenital conditions. Outcomes investigated were special educational need (SEN), absenteeism, exclusion, academic attainment, and unemployment. All analyses were adjusted for sociodemographic and maternity confounders. Absenteeism was investigated as a mediating factor in the associations with attainment and unemployment. RESULTS: Of the 715,850 children, 6,295 (0.9%) had congenital heart disease and 4,412 (6.1%) had isolated congenital heart disease. Congenital heart disease and isolated congenital heart disease were both significantly associated with subsequent special educational need (OR 3.45, 95% CI 3.26-3.65, p < 0.001 and OR 1.98, 95% CI 1.84-2.13, p < 0.001 respectively), absenteeism (IRR 1.13, 95% CI 1.10-1.16, p < 0.001 and IRR 1.10, 95% CI 1.06-1.13, p < 0.001 respectively), and low academic attainment (OR 1.69, 95% CI 1.39-2.07, p < 0.001 and OR 1.35, 95% CI 1.07-1.69, p = 0.011 respectively). Neither congenital heart disease nor isolated congenital heart disease were associated with school exclusion. Only congenital heart disease (OR 1.21, 95% CI 1.03-1.42, p = 0.022) but not isolated congenital heart disease was associated with unemployment. When days absent were included in the analyses investigating attainment and unemployment, the conclusions were not altered. CONCLUSION: Children with congenital heart disease have greater special educational need, lower school attendance, attain lower examination grades and have greater unemployment compared to peers. In addition to healthcare support, affected children need educational support to avoid additional impact on their long-term wellbeing.

BACKGROUND: School truancy, deliberately skipping school without permission, is a complex issue with far-reaching consequences for individual students, education systems, and entire communities. While this phenomenon is not unique to Sierra Leone, the specific context of the post-conflict nation raises concerns about its potential impact on the country's fragile rebuilding process. This study examines the prevalence and predictors of school truancy among adolescents in Sierra Leone. METHODS: The study analysed the cross-sectional 2017 Global School-based Health Survey (GSHS) data in Sierra Leone, a nationally representative survey conducted among adolescents aged 10-19 years using a multistage sampling methodology. A weighted sample of 2,769 adolescents in Sierra Leone was included in the study. A multivariable binary regression analysis was used to examine the predictors of school truancy among adolescents. The regression results were presented using an adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: The prevalence of school truancy was 35% among adolescents in Sierra Leone. Adolescents who use alcohol (AOR = 2.28, 95% CI = 1.45, 3.58) and who have ever had sexual intercourse (AOR = 1.67, 95% CI = 1.10, 2.53) had higher odds of being associated with school truancy. Adolescents who planned suicide (AOR = 0.58, 95% CI = 0.36, 0.93) and whose parents did not intrude on their privacy (AOR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.45, 0.97) had lower odds of being associated with school truancy. CONCLUSION: School truancy is a critical issue in Sierra Leone, demanding multi-pronged interventions at policy and practice levels. Addressing underlying causes like alcohol use, sexual behaviour, planned suicide, and parent's intrusion of privacy is crucial. Key strategies include fostering positive school environments, providing mental health support, and improving parent-child communication.

Objectives: Acknowledging peer support as the cornerstone in mitigating the psychosocial burden arising from the second victim phenomenon, this study assesses the economic benefits of a Peer Support Program (PSP), compared to data of the Resilience In Stressful Events (RISE) program in the US, within the acute inpatient care sector in Germany. Methods: Employing a Markov model, this economic evaluation analyzes the cost benefits, including sick day and dropout costs, over a 1-year period, comparing scenarios with and without the Peer Support Program from a hospital perspective. The costs were calculated as an example based on a hospital with 1,000 employees. The estimations are considered conservative. Results: The anticipated outcomes demonstrate an average cost saving of €6,672 per healthcare worker participating in the Peer Support Program, leading to an annual budgetary impact of approximately €6,67 Mio. for the studied hospital. Conclusion: The integration of a PSP proves economically advantageous for German hospitals, not only preserving financial resources but also reducing absenteeism, and mitigating turnover, thereby enhancing overall patient care.

BACKGROUND: New cancer diagnoses are associated with employment decrease, workplace absenteeism, and attributable costs to employers. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the workplace productivity loss in the year following a new diagnosis of early-, intermediate-, or advanced-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in commercially insured US adults. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using Merative MarketScan commercial claims to identify incident HCC diagnoses from 2010 to 2020. Patients were stratified into early-, intermediate-, or advanced-stage cohorts based on presence of secondary malignancy codes or first treatment received. Mean workdays lost and attributable cost in the year following a new diagnosis were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier sample averages to account for censoring. An exploratory analysis was conducted on subgroups in the early and advanced cohorts to assess productivity loss in patients with and without treatment. RESULTS: Mean workdays lost in the year following a new HCC diagnosis among the early, intermediate, and advanced cohorts was 22.6 days (95% CI = 16.0-29.8), 17.4 days (95% CI = 11.9-23.2), and 19.5 days (95% CI = 15.6-23.6), respectively. Corresponding indirect costs were $6,031(95% CI = $4,270-$7,953), $4,644 (95% CI = $3,176-$6,192), and $5,204 (95% CI = $4,163-$6,298). Early-stage patients without a liver transplant and advanced-stage patients who received systemic therapy had 19.7 (95% CI = 12.7-27.4) and 22.0 (95% CI = 16.6-27.7) mean workdays lost, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Productivity loss varies by stage and appears to be higher in early-stage patients who receive more intensive treatments in the first year following a new HCC diagnosis.

AIM: We assessed the vaccination effectiveness (VE) of a COVID-19 booster vaccine dose and the association between morbidity and absenteeism with COVID-19 booster vaccine receipt among healthcare personnel (HCP) in 2022-2023 in Greece. METHODS: We followed 5752 HCP from November 14, 2022 through May 28, 2023 for episodes of absenteeism. Absenteeism for non-infectious causes, pregnancy leave, or annual leave was not recorded. Full vaccination was defined as a primary vaccination series plus one booster dose within the past six months. Multivariable regression models were used to estimate the association of full COVID-19 vaccination with the outcomes of interest. RESULTS: A total of 1029 episodes of absenteeism occurred during the study period (17.9 episodes per 100 HCP). The mean duration of absence per episode was 5.2 days, and the total duration of absence was 5237 days. COVID-19 was diagnosed in 736 (12.8 %) HCP, asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in 62 (1.1 %) HCP, and influenza in 95 (1.7 %) HCP. Overall, COVID-19, influenza, and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection accounted for 71.5 %, 9.2 %, and 6.0 % of episodes of absenteeism, respectively. Multivariable regression models indicated that fully vaccinated HCP were absent from work for shorter periods [adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 0.42; 95 % confidence interval (CI): 0.21-0.83], were less likely to develop COVID-19 [aOR: 0.37; 95 % CI: 0.17-0.81)], and were more likely to develop an asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection (aOR: 5.90; 95 % CI: 1.27-27.45). The adjusted full VE against COVID-19 was 62.8 % (95 % CI: 18.6 %-83.0 %). CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 remains a significant cause of morbidity and absenteeism among HCP. Full COVID-19 vaccination status conferred significant protection against COVID-19 and was associated with shorter periods of absence from work.

Tungiasis is a highly neglected tropical skin disease caused by the sand flea, Tunga penetrans. The flea burrows into the skin inducing a strong inflammatory response, leading to pain and mobility restrictions with potential impacts on quality of life. Few countries implement control efforts and there are few data on the impact of the disease to support policy decisions. We conducted a survey to determine the impact of tungiasis among primary school children across nine counties of Kenya. A total of 10,600 pupils aged 8 to 14 years were randomly selected from 97 primary schools and examined for tungiasis. For 81 cases and 578 randomly selected controls, anthropometric measurements were made, and school attendance and exam scores were collected from school records. Of those with tungiasis, 73 were interviewed regarding their quality of life using a tungiasis-specific instrument. Mixed effect ordered logistic and linear models were used to assess associations between disease status and impact variables. Compared to uninfected pupils, those with tungiasis had lower weight-for-age z-scores (adjusted ß -0.41, 95% CI: -0.75-0.06, p = 0.020), missed more days of school the previous term (adjusted Incidence Rate Ratio: 1.49, 95% CI: 1.01-2.21, p = 0.046) and were less likely to receive a high score in mathematics (aOR 0.18, 95% CI: 0.08-0.40, p<0.001) and other subjects. Pupils with severe disease (clinical score >10) were four times more likely to experience severe pain than those with mild disease (OR 3.96, 95% CI: 1.35-11.64, p = 0.012) and a higher impact on their quality of life than those with mild disease (aOR 3.57, 95% CI: 1.17-10.8, p = 0.025) when adjusted for covariates. This study has demonstrated tungiasis has a considerable impact on children's lives and academic achievement. This indicates the need for integrated disease management for school-aged children to protect their physical and cognitive development and their future prospects.

The second victim experience is defined as a healthcare professional who is traumatized by adverse events that have occurred to the patient, the first victim. This traumatization can cause a range of symptoms such as guilt, anxiety, disturbed sleep, and decreased job satisfaction. The purposes of this study were to understand certified registered nurse anesthetists' (CRNAs') second victim distress, perceived support, and the impact of the second victim experience on absenteeism and turnover intention. A survey was administered to CRNAs from the Michigan Association of Nurse Anesthetists, with a total of 172 responses suitable for analysis. Psychological distress was experienced by 20.3% (n = 35) of CRNAs. Additionally, 16.3% (n = 28) and 15.1% (n = 26) of CRNAs experienced physical distress and professional self-efficacy issues respectively where CRNAs doubted whether they were a good healthcare provider and questioned their professional abilities. Turnover intentions and absenteeism were also evaluated with 11.6% of CRNAs wanting to take a job outside of patient care and/or quit their job, and 13% identified that they needed a mental health day and/or time away from work after their experience. Organizations must consider offering peer support and supportive counseling for practitioners who have suffered from traumatic events and identify desired forms of support among staff.

BACKGROUND: Implicit absenteeism is very common among nurses. Poor perceived social support of intensive care unit nurses has a negative impact on their mental and physical health. There is evidence that lack of occupational coping self-efficacy can promote implicit absenteeism; however, the relationship between lack of occupational coping self-efficacy in perceived social support and implicit absenteeism of intensive care unit nurses is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the role of perceived social support between lack of occupational coping self-efficacy and implicit absenteeism of intensive care unit nurses, and to provide reliable evidence to the management of clinical nurses. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 517 intensive care unit nurses in 10 tertiary hospitals in Sichuan province, China was conducted, of which 474 were valid questionnaires with a valid recovery rate of 91.6%. The survey tools included the Chinese version of Implicit Absenteeism Scale, the Chinese version of Perceived Social Support Scale, the Chinese version of Occupational Coping Self-Efficacy Scale and the Sociodemographic characteristics. Descriptive analysis and Pearson correlation analysis were performed using SPSS version 22.0, while the mediating effects were performed using AMOS version 24.0. RESULTS: The average of intensive care unit nurses had a total implicit absenteeism score of (16.87 ± 3.98), in this study, the median of intensive care unit nurses' implicit absenteeism score was 17, there were 210 intensive care unit nurses with low implicit absenteeism (44.3%) and 264 ICU nurses with high implicit absenteeism (55.7%). A total perceived social support score of (62.87 ± 11.61), and a total lack of occupational coping self-efficacy score of (22.78 ± 5.98). The results of Pearson correlation analysis showed that implicit absenteeism was negatively correlated with perceived social support (r = -0.260, P < 0.001) and positively correlated with lack of occupational coping self-efficacy (r = 0.414, P < 0.001). In addition, we found that perceived social support plays a mediating role in lack of occupational coping self-efficacy and implicit absenteeism [ß = 0.049, 95% CI of (0.002, 0.101)]. CONCLUSIONS: Intensive care unit nurses had a high level of implicit absenteeism with a moderate level of perceived social support and lack of occupational coping self-efficacy. Nursing managers should pay attention to the nurses those who were within low levels of social support and negative coping strategies, and take measures to reduce intensive care unit nurses' professional stress, minimize implicit absenteeism.

Objetivo: Identificar as variáveis associadas ao absenteísmo por covid-19 avaliando a Qualidade de Vida no Trabalho dos profissionais de enfermagem da Unidade de Terapia Intensiva de um hospital público. Métodos: Estudo de abordagem quantitativa, observacional e retrospectivo, realizada na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva de um hospital público estadual em Manaus, aplicado dois questionários para a coleta de dados. Resultados: O absenteísmo teve influência das seguintes variáveis: técnicos de enfermagem (100%); dois vínculos empregatícios (64%); especialização nível médio ou pós-técnico (50%); renda até dois salários-mínimos (73,9%). Conclusão: Este estudo visa contribuir para o avanço do conhecimento científico por meio das relações entre o absenteísmo e a Covid-19 e, através do índice de Qualidade de Vida busca ajudar na criação de melhorias para a classe da enfermagem e de aspectos organizacionais. Results: The absenteeism was influenced by the following variables: nursing technicians (100%); two jobs (64%); medium or post-technical specialization (50%); income up to two minimum wages (73.9%). Conclusion: This study aims to contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge through the relationship between absenteeism and Covid-19 and, through the Quality of Life index, seeks to help create improvements for the nursing class and organizational aspects. Conclusión: Este estudio pretende contribuir al avance del conocimiento científico a través de la relación entre el absentismo y el Covid-19 y, a través del índice de Calidad de Vida, busca ayudar en la creación de mejoras para la clase de enfermería y los aspectos organizativos. Objective: Dysmenorrhea is the pain related to menstruation; to screen for the symptoms, a working ability, location, intensity of days of pain, and dysmenorrhea (WaLIDD) score was created. The purpose of this work was to culturally adapt and assess the measurement properties of the WaLIDD score for dysmenorrhea in Brazilian women. Methods: In this cross-sectional online study, we evaluated women with and without dysmenorrhea. Criterion validity and construct validity were assessed, respectively, by the Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) curve and correlations with the bodily pain and social functioning domains of medical outcomes study 36-item short-form health survey (SF-36), self-report of absenteeism and Stanford Presenteeism Scale for presenteeism. Test-retest reliability and measurement errors were assessed, respectively, by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland and Altman Graph. Results: 430 women completed the test, 238 (55.4%) women had dysmenorrhea, and 199 (46.3%) answered the questionnaire twice for the retest. The cutoff points ≥4, ≥5, and ≥5 could discriminate between women with and without dysmenorrhea, absenteeism, and presenteeism related to dysmenorrhea, respectively. Correlations between SF-36 - pain and social functioning domains and WaLIDD score were weak to strong and negative. For WaLIDD total Score, ICC was 0.95 and the limits of agreement were -1.54 and 1.62. Conclusion: WaLIDD score is a short, valid and reliable instrument to screen and predict dysmenorrhea and could predict absenteeism and presenteeism related to dysmenorrhea in Brazilian women.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the proportion of Australian adolescent girls who experience menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea); to assess associations of dysmenorrhea and period pain severity with adolescents missing regular activities because of their periods. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, population-based cohort study; analysis of Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC) survey data. SETTING, PARTICIPANTS: Female adolescents in the nationally representative cross-sequential sample of Australian children recruited in 2004 for the Kinder cohort (aged 4-5 years at enrolment). Survey data from waves 6 (mean age 14 years), wave 7 (16 years) and wave 8 (18 years) were analysed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Severity of period pain during the preceding three months (very, quite, a little, or not at all painful); number of activity types missed because of periods; relationship between missing activities and period pain severity. RESULTS: Of the 1835 participating female members of the LSAC Kinder cohort at waves 6 to 8, 1600 (87%) responded to questions about menstruation during at least one of waves 6 to 8 of data collection. At wave 6 (14 years), 227 of 644 respondents (35%) reported dysmenorrhea, 675 of 1341 (50%) at wave 6 (16 years), and 518 of 1115 (46%) at wave 8 (18 years). Of the 366 participants who reported period pain severity at all three waves, 137 reported no dysmenorrhea at all three waves (37%), 66 reported dysmenorrhea at all three waves (18%), 89 reported increasing period pain over time (24%), and 38 reported declining pain (10%). At wave 6, 223 of 647 participants reported missing at least one activity because of their periods (34%), 454 of 1341 at wave 7 (34%), and 344 of 1111 at wave 8 (31%). Of the participants who experienced very painful periods, 72% (wave 6), 63% (wave 7), and 65% (wave 8) missed at least one activity type because of their periods, as did 45% (wave 6), 36% (wave 7), and 40% (wave 8) of those who experienced quite painful periods. CONCLUSIONS: A large proportion of adolescent girls in Australia experience period pain that affects their engagement in regular activities, including school attendance. Recognising adolescent period pain is important not only for enhancing their immediate quality of life with appropriate support and interventions, but also as part of early screening for chronic health conditions such as endometriosis.

INTRODUCTION: Seasonal influenza causes annual school breaks and student absenteeism in Hong Kong schools and kindergartens. This proposal aims to conduct a retrospective cohort study to evaluate the impact of a school-based influenza vaccination (SIV) programme on absenteeism and outbreaks at schools in Hong Kong. METHODS: The study will compare schools that implemented the SIV programme with schools that did not. The data will be sourced from school records, encompassing absenteeism records, outbreak reports, and vaccination rates. We will recruit 1000 students from 381 schools and kindergartens in 18 districts of Hong Kong starting June 2024. The primary outcome measures will include absenteeism rates due to influenza and school influenza outbreaks. Secondary outcomes will consist of vaccination coverage rates and the impact of the SIV programme on hospitalisations due to influenza-like illness. A t-test will be conducted to compare the outcomes between schools with and without the SIV programme. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The school completed signing the participants' informed consent form before reporting the data to us. Our study has been approved by the Hospital Authority Hong Kong West Cluster IRB Committee (IRB No: UW 17-111) and was a subtopic of the research "The estimated age-group specific influenza vaccine coverage rates in Hong Kong and the impact of the school outreach vaccination program". TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study will be retrospectively registered.

AIMS: Police employees may experience high levels of stress due to the challenging nature of their work which can then lead to sickness absence. To date, there has been limited research on sickness absence in the police. This exploratory analysis investigated sickness absence in UK police employees. METHODS: Secondary data analyses were conducted using data from the Airwave Health Monitoring Study (2006-2015). Past year sickness absence was self-reported and categorised as none, low (1-5 days), moderate (6-19 days) and long-term sickness absence (LTSA, 20 or more days). Descriptive statistics and multinomial logistic regressions were used to examine sickness absence and exploratory associations with sociodemographic factors, occupational stressors, health risk behaviours, and mental health outcomes, controlling for rank, gender and age. RESULTS: From a sample of 40,343 police staff and police officers, forty-six per cent had no sickness absence within the previous year, 33% had a low amount, 13% a moderate amount and 8% were on LTSA. The groups that were more likely to take sick leave were women, non-uniformed police staff, divorced or separated, smokers and those with three or more general practitioner consultations in the past year, poorer mental health, low job satisfaction and high job strain. CONCLUSIONS: The study highlights the groups of police employees who may be more likely to take sick leave and is unique in its use of a large cohort of police employees. The findings emphasise the importance of considering possible modifiable factors that may contribute to sickness absence in UK police forces.

Attendance absences have a substantial impact on student's future physical and mental health as well as academic progress. Numerous personal, familial, and social issues are among the causes of student absences. Any kind of absence from school should be minimized. Extremely high rates of student absences may indicate the abrupt commencement of a serious school health crisis or public health crisis, such as the spread of tuberculosis or COVID-19, which provides school health professionals with an early warning. We take the extreme values in absence data as the object and attempt to apply the extreme value theory (EVT) to describe the distribution of extreme values. This study aims to predict extreme instances of student absences. School health professionals can take preventative measures to reduce future excessive absences, according to the predicted results. Five statistical distributions were applied to individually characterize the extreme values. Our findings suggest that EVT is a useful tool for predicting extreme student absences, thereby aiding preventative measures in public health.

Introduction: Perceived workplace discrimination is a complex phenomenon involving unfair treatment in the workplace based on personal characteristics such as age, ethnicity, gender, or disability. The objective of this study is to explore the association of perceived workplace discrimination with health and occupational outcomes. Methods: Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines and the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, a scoping review of articles published between 2000 and 2022 was conducted in databases such as Pubmed, Scopus, and PsyInfo. Inclusion criteria focused on studies exploring perceived workplace discrimination among workers, excluding those on patients, students, or the general population, and articles not written in English or Spanish. Results: Of the 9,871 articles identified, 102 met the criteria and were analyzed. Research showed a progressive increase in the study of perceived workplace discrimination, with a majority of studies in North America and Europe and a predominance of cross-sectional designs. Most studies did not clearly define the concept of perceived workplace discrimination nor report the psychometric characteristics of the measurement instruments. A significant association was found between perceived discrimination and negative outcomes in workers' mental and physical health, as well as a negative impact on job satisfaction and an increase in absenteeism. Additionally, sociodemographic characteristics such as race/ethnicity, gender, and age influenced the perception of discrimination. Conclusions: This review confirms that perceived workplace discrimination significantly impacts the health and job satisfaction of workers, with particular detriment in minorities and women. Despite an increase in research over the last two decades, there remains a lack of consistency in the definition and measurement of the phenomenon. Most studies have used cross-sectional designs, and there is a notable absence of research in the Latin American context.


Introducción: La discriminación laboral percibida es un fenómeno complejo que implica un trato injusto en el lugar de trabajo, basado en características personales como edad, etnia, género o discapacidad. El objetivo de este estudio es explorar cómo ha sido investigada la discriminación laboral percibida, en el contexto de investigaciones acerca de su asociación con salud y resultados ocupacionales. Métodos: Siguiendo la guía PRISMA-ScR y la metodología del Instituto Joanna Briggs, se realizó una revisión panorámica de artículos publicados entre los años 2000 y 2022 en bases de datos como PubMed, Scopus y PsycInfo. Los criterios de inclusión se centraron en estudios que exploraron la discriminación laboral percibida en trabajadores, excluyendo aquellos en pacientes, estudiantes o población general, y artículos no escritos en inglés o español. Resultados: De los 9871 artículos identificados, 102 cumplieron con los criterios y fueron analizados. Además, las características sociodemográficas como raza/etnia, género y edad influyeron en la percepción de discriminación. Conclusiones: Esta revisión confirma que la discriminación laboral percibida impacta considerablemente la salud y satisfacción laboral de los trabajadores, afectando más a minorías y mujeres. A pesar de un incremento en su investigación en las últimas dos décadas, persiste una carencia de consistencia en la definición y medición del fenómeno. La mayoría de los estudios han utilizado diseños transversales, y se observa una notable ausencia de investigaciones en el contexto latinoamericano.

BACKGROUND: Patients with iron deficiency anemia are treated with iron preparations, but gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting occur frequently. These symptoms may negatively affect the quality of life and work productivity in patients with iron deficiency anemia. This study assessed the impact of nausea and vomiting on the quality of life and work productivity of patients taking iron preparations for heavy menstrual bleeding or anemia. METHODS: An online survey was conducted among patients taking iron preparations for heavy menstrual bleeding or anemia. Demographic data and information about medication use and the health condition were collected. The patients were asked to answer the 5-level EQ-5D version, and work productivity and activity impairment questionnaires. The outcomes were reported by patients in the presences of nausea, vomiting, and nausea or vomiting. The association with the 5-level EQ-5D version utility score for the severity and frequency of the symptoms were also assessed. RESULTS: A total of 385 patients were enrolled, and 96 were patients with nausea or vomiting, of which 94 were with nausea and 27 were with vomiting. The 5-level EQ-5D version utility scores for the patients with nausea, vomiting, and nausea or vomiting were significantly lower than those of the patients without these symptoms (p < 0.001 for each). The 5-level EQ-5D version utility score was correlated with the severity of nausea and the frequency of vomiting per day (p < 0.001 for each). As for the work productivity and activity impairment, the presenteeism, the overall work impairment, and the activity impairment of the patients with nausea, vomiting, and nausea or vomiting were significantly higher than those without these symptoms (p < 0.001 for each). The absenteeism was slightly higher trend was observed, but not significant. CONCLUSION: Patients taking iron preparations who have nausea or vomiting experience a significant burden in terms of poorer quality of life and higher work productivity impairment. This article explores which students-with regard to gender, socio-economic background and migration background-skip school in Germany, Japan, Sweden and the United Kingdom (UK) according to PISA data. Students who skip school are observed in many countries, but there is not much systematic research that studies this across countries. Comparable data is to a large extent missing. PISA data offers an opportunity to use comparable data. In PISA, students were asked in 2018, 2015 and 2012 whether they had skipped school a whole day in the last two weeks prior to their completion of the PISA student questionnaire. Patterns of how absence relates to sociodemographic factors vary in countries and school systems. In the comparison between the four countries the UK stands out as having a higher percentage of students who have reported that they have skipped school than in the other countries. This does not seem to be related to any specific group of students. Japan also stands out with a lower percentage of students who have reported that they have skipped school. According to PISA data, skipping school is more related to socio-economic background than any other of the variables studied. The socio-economic background seems to be related to skipping school in all three PISA studies in Sweden and the UK. Gender seems not to be an important factor in the four countries. In Sweden and Germany there is a lower percentage of non-immigrant students who report that they have skipped school than first-and second-generation immigrant students. In the UK the figures are more ambiguous. When the percentages of students skipping school are compared over time and in the countries, it is difficult to find any trends, but the data only covered three measurements during a period of six years, which may be too short a time span to see trends.

The available evidence suggests positive health outcomes associated with early treatment intensification in Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Our study estimated the productivity effects arising from improved health correlated with early intensified treatment in T2DM in Korea. Using a recently published methodology and model, we investigated the association between early intensified treatment and the probability of experiencing fewer diabetes-related complication events. Treatment strategies leading to better health outcomes are expected to be associated with social value through increased participation in paid and unpaid work activities. Therefore, we translated the lower incidence of complications into monetary terms related to productivity for the Korean population. We quantified productivity by considering (a) absenteeism, (b) presenteeism, (c) permanent loss of labor force, and (d) activity restriction. Deterministic and probabilistic sensitivity analyses in the base case parameter were performed. Approximately, 1.7 thousand (standard deviation [SD] ±580 events) micro- and macrovascular complication events could potentially be avoided by early treatment intensification. This led to a societal gain attributed to increased productivity of 23 million USD (SD ± $8.2 million). This article demonstrates the likelihood of achieving better health and productivity through early intensified treatment in diabetes.
