RESUMO

The harmful use of alcohol is one of the leading risk factors for population health. It is linked with over 200 health conditions, including noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health conditions, maternal and child health, infectious diseases, and injuries. This psychoactive substance caused 5.5% of all deaths and 6.7% of all disability-adjusted life years in the Region of the Americas in 2016. It also causes a significant social burden and imposes substantial direct treatment costs and indirect economic costs that represent a serious threat to economic and social development. This impact is recognized by target 3.5 of the Sustainable Development Goals aiming to “strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, including narcotic drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol”. The amount and frequency of alcohol consumed by an individual is determined, in large part, by the affordability of alcoholic beverages. Such affordability depends on the real price of alcoholic beverages, the price of other goods and services, and consumers’ incomes. Thus, there is strong health and economic rationale for the use of fiscal policies targeting alcoholic beverages. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends reducing the harmful use of alcohol through increased excise taxes on alcoholic beverages as part of the WHO Global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol, and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Plan of Action to Reduce the Harmful Use of Alcohol. It is also part of the WHO recommended most cost-effective, evidence-based policies to prevent and control NCDs, and it is highlighted as one of five high-impact strategies of the SAFER technical package. Although 33 out of the 35 PAHO Member States apply excise taxes on alcoholic beverages, there is great heterogeneity in their design and rates, and most could be further leveraged to improve their impact on alcohol consumption and health. PAHO is committed to providing Member States with accurate, relevant, and internationally comparable information that they can use to guide the development of policy and to evaluate the impact of measures to prevent the harmful use of alcohol. Developing a tax share indicator is necessary to monitor taxes on alcoholic beverages, enable standardized comparisons across countries and over time, establish best practices in tax design, and provide a powerful tool for advocacy. Since 2016, the Department of Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health (NMH) at PAHO has been working on developing standardized and comparable indicators of the share of indirect taxes in the price of alcoholic beverages. Building on this experience and the WHO methodology for monitoring tobacco taxes, this brochure presents the results of pioneering tax share and complementary price and tax policy indicators for alcoholic beverages—including beer, wine, and spirits—in 30 PAHO Member States. This brochure is a tool for data dissemination to the different sectors involved in alcohol taxation in the Region of the Americas and, likewise, to help countries in designing, planning, and evaluating alcohol taxes to reduce the harmful use of alcohol.

RESUMO

This work describes the development of a new automated parallel dispersive tip microextraction method (Au-Pa-DPX) for the determination of eleven polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in four samples of Brazilian sugarcane spirit beverages, with separation and detection done by the HPLC-DAD. The results obtained with the Au-Pa-DPX approach were also compared with those obtained via the conventional parallel manual DPX method with the same samples and optimized extraction process. Desorption solvent and cycles of desorption, cleaning and extraction were optimized using response surface methodology and univariate approaches. For the Au-Pa-DPX method, the coefficient of determination (R2) ranged from 0.9948 to 0.9997. The limits of detection and quantification were all 0.303 µg l-1 and 1.00 µg l-1, respectively. Interday and intraday precision ranged from 7.6 % to 31.7 % and 0.40 % to 15.8 %, respectively. For the manual parallel DPX method, the interday and intraday precision ranged from 8.2 % to 38.1 % and 5.40 % to 18.7 %, respectively. The relative recovery values obtained with the proposed method ranged from 53.29 to 124.94 %. The enrichment factors ranged from 15.13 to 22.35. The sum of PAH concentrations in the four samples ranged from undetected to 25.58 µg l-1. These results, when correlated to other methods, highlight the gains in regards to precision obtained with the automated apparatus. Furthermore, when compared to other methods from the literature, it is an interesting green alternative for the determination of these analytes and this sample, with high throughput (4.67 min per sample), low consumption of solvents and samples, generating less waste and reducing health risks to the analyst.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The World Health Organization recommends using health-risk warnings on alcoholic beverages. This study examines the impact of separate or combined warning labels for at-risk groups and the general population on alcohol purchase decisions. METHODS: In 2022, 7758 adults who consumed alcohol or were pregnant/lactating women (54.0 % female, mean age = 40.6 years) were presented with an online store's beverage section and randomly assigned to one of six warning labels in a between-subjects experimental design: no-warning, pregnant/lactating, drinking-driving, general cancer risk, combined warnings, and assorted warnings across bottles. The main outcome, the intention to purchase an alcoholic vs. non-alcoholic beverage, was examined with adjusted risk differences using logistic regressions. RESULTS: Participants exposed to the general cancer risk warning decreased their alcoholic choices by 10.4 percentage points (pp.) (95 % CI [-0.139, -0.069], p < 0.001, OR = 0.561), while those in the pregnancy/lactation warning condition did it by 3.8 pp. (95 % CI [-0.071, -0.005], p = 0.025, OR = 0.806). The driving-drinking warning had no significant effect. Participants exposed to the combined warnings label, or the assorted warnings reduced alcohol purchase decisions by 6.1 pp. (95 % CI [-0.095, -0.028], p < 0.001, OR = 0.708) and 4.3 pp. (95 % CI [-0.076, -0.010], p = 0.011, OR = 0.782), respectively. Cancer warning outperformed other labels and was effective for subgroups such as pregnant/lactating women, young adults, and low-income individuals. CONCLUSIONS: General cancer risk warnings are more effective at reducing alcohol purchase decisions compared to warning labels for specific groups or labels using multiple warnings. In addition to warning labels, other policies should be considered for addressing well-known alcohol-related risks (e.g., drinking and driving).

[ABSTRACT]. Objective. To calculate the alcohol per capita consumption (APC) in Brazil (Brazil APC) using national data and to establish the Brazil APC as gold standard for the country, replacing the indicator previously calculated by the World Health Organization (WHO) based on international data. Method. The Brazilian public data sources necessary for calculating the recorded APC were selected, and the alcohol concentration was defined by beverage category. For the variables of tourist APC and unrecorded APC, which are unavailable in Brazil, estimates from the United Nations (UN) and the WHO were used. The Brazil APC indicator was calculated and compared to the indicator produced by the WHO through analysis of the medians obtained for the period from 2005 to 2020. Results. The national alcohol consumption indicator was 9.2 liters per capita in 2005, reaching 9.8 in 2020. The WHO indicator showed a consumption of 8.4 liters per capita in 2005, decreasing until 2016 and slightly increasing to 7.8 in 2020. Conclusion. The Brazil APC was calculated based on national sources and showed a distinct trend compared to the WHO indicator, which showed a decrease. The regular and transparent provision of this indicator through government channels will support the development of policies to address alcohol consumption in the country.

Alcohol consumption, associated with various cancers, mental disorders, and aggressive behavior, leads to three million deaths globally each year. In Brazil, the alcohol per capita consumption among drinkers aged 15 and over is 41.7 g of pure alcohol/day (~1 L beer/day), which falls into the risky consumption category and exceeds the global average by almost 30%. An effective way to mitigate alcohol-related harm is to increase its retail price. This study assesses the costs of consuming leading brands of beer and sugarcane spirit cachaça (Brazil's most popular alcoholic beverages) against the expenditure on staple foods. Data on food and alcoholic beverage prices were collected in João Pessoa, Brazil, for 2020 and 2021. The cost per gram of pure alcohol and food were considered to establish consumption patterns of 16.8 g/day (moderate), 41.7 g/day, and 83.4 g/day (heavy), distributed in three scenarios involving the beverages alone or combined (64% beer and 36% cachaça), and a balanced 2000 kcal/day staple diet. The study finds that all heavy consumption scenarios cost less or significantly less (cachaça alone) than a 2000 kcal/day staple diet, highlighting an urgent need for fiscal policies, such as a minimum unit pricing for alcohol, to address public health concerns.

RESUMO

This research paper addresses the hypotheses that Kluyveromyces marxianus can be cultured with good alcohol production on different whey-derived matrices, and that the fermented product can be used in order to develop alcoholic beverages with acceptable sensory characteristics by mixtures with yeast-fermented fruit-based matrices. Growth and fermentative characteristics of Kluyveromyces marxianus LFIQK1 in different whey-derived matrices were explored by culturing (24 h, 30°C) on reconstituted whey, demineralized whey, heat-treated whey and milk permeate media. High lactose consumption, ethanol production and yield were observed. Reconstituted whey matrix was selected for mixing with orange or strawberry juices fermented using Saccharomyces cerevisiae to obtain alcoholic beverages (W-OR and W-ST, respectively). Consumer evaluation of beverages was performed using acceptability and Check-All-That-Apply (CATA) questions. Good acceptance was observed, significantly higher for W-ST than for W-OR. CATA questions gave information about organoleptic characteristics of beverages. Penalty analysis showed W-R and W-ST were positively associated with smooth/refreshing and fruity/natural, respectively. Liking was represented, accordingly with penalty analysis, by natural/refreshing. A novel alternative for utilization of whey and whey-related matrices by alcoholic beverages production with natural ingredients is presented.

RESUMO

Evaluating domestication signatures beyond model organisms is essential for a thorough understanding of the genotype-phenotype relationship in wild and human-related environments. Structural variations (SVs) can significantly impact phenotypes playing an important role in the physiological adaptation of species to different niches, including during domestication. A detailed characterization of the fitness consequences of these genomic rearrangements, however, is still limited in non-model systems, largely due to the paucity of direct comparisons between domesticated and wild isolates. Here, we used a combination of sequencing strategies to explore major genomic rearrangements in a Lachancea cidri yeast strain isolated from cider (CBS2950) and compared them to those in eight wild isolates from primary forests. Genomic analysis revealed dozens of SVs, including a large reciprocal translocation (~16 kb and 500 kb) present in the cider strain, but absent from all wild strains. Interestingly, the number of SVs was higher relative to single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the cider strain, suggesting a significant role in the strain's phenotypic variation. The set of SVs identified directly impacts dozens of genes and likely underpins the greater fermentation performance in the L. cidri CBS2950. In addition, the large reciprocal translocation affects a proline permease (PUT4) regulatory region, resulting in higher PUT4 transcript levels, which agrees with higher ethanol tolerance, improved cell growth when using proline, and higher amino acid consumption during fermentation. These results suggest that SVs are responsible for the rapid physiological adaptation of yeast to a human-related environment and demonstrate the key contribution of SVs in adaptive fermentative traits in non-model species.IMPORTANCEThe exploration of domestication signatures associated with human-related environments has predominantly focused on studies conducted on model organisms, such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, overlooking the potential for comparisons across other non-Saccharomyces species. In our research, employing a combination of long- and short-read data, we found domestication signatures in Lachancea cidri, a non-model species recently isolated from fermentative environments in cider in France. The significance of our study lies in the identification of large array of major genomic rearrangements in a cider strain compared to wild isolates, which underly several fermentative traits. These domestication signatures result from structural variants, which are likely responsible for the phenotypic differences between strains, providing a rapid path of adaptation to human-related environments.

RESUMO

Yeasts are a diverse group of fungal microorganisms that are widely used to produce fermented foods and beverages. In Mexico, open fermentations are used to obtain spirits from agave plants. Despite the prevalence of this traditional practice throughout the country, yeasts have only been isolated and studied from a limited number of distilleries. To systematically describe the diversity of yeast species from open agave fermentations, here we generate the YMX-1.0 culture collection by isolating 4524 strains from 68 sites with diverse climatic, geographical, and biological contexts. We used MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry for taxonomic classification and validated a subset of the strains by ITS and D1/D2 sequencing, which also revealed two potential novel species of Saccharomycetales. Overall, the composition of yeast communities was weakly associated with local variables and types of climate, yet a core set of six species was consistently isolated from most producing regions. To explore the intraspecific variation of the yeasts from agave fermentations, we sequenced the genomes of four isolates of the nonconventional yeast Kazachstania humilis. The genomes of these four strains were substantially distinct from a European isolate of the same species, suggesting that they may belong to different populations. Our work contributes to the understanding and conservation of an open fermentation system of great cultural and economic importance, providing a valuable resource to study the biology and genetic diversity of microorganisms living at the interface of natural and human-associated environments.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The violent behavior of football fans is constantly associated with their drinking habits. Aiming to reduce its impact, policy makers often ban the sales and consumption of alcohol beverages during matches. Nonetheless, there are few papers that empirically analyzed such relationship, and our paper aims to shed light on this question. METHODS: Out dataset comprises 4,560 matches from the first and second tiers of the Brazilian League, where 245 exhibited at least one antisocial behavior from fans. Ordered logistic regressions are used as method. RESULTS: Our empirical findings evidence that the sales of alcoholic drinks do increase the likelihood of severe antisocial behavior. We also observed a higher likelihood of violent cases when the home club loses its match as well as during crowded matches. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the change in the alcohol police in Brazil did show a significant association with the likelihood of antisocial behavior among football fans. However, since the magnitude of such effect is small, further research is needed to examine the potential benefits of this policy change.

RESUMO

The university is considered an environment that favors the initiation and use of substances, especially those that are legal, such as alcohol. This consumption can be differentiated in university students, which makes it necessary to better understand this behavior. Taking into account these aspects, we analyzed the abusive consumption of alcoholic beverages in university students and its association with socioeconomic and behavioral factors. We conducted a cross-sectional study with regularly enrolled students. We assessed the abusive consumption of alcoholic beverages using the binge drinking pattern. We collected socioeconomic and behavioral data using a questionnaire. The association between the variables was verified using logistic regression. Abusive consumption of alcoholic beverages was high, with a high weekly frequency. The association with sociodemographic and behavioral factors can increase the health risk. Education campaigns within institutions with students in the classroom and with all those who can influence these students are important. As there are few studies that consider other health risk factors that have not been analyzed yet, such as those treated in our study, with the abusive consumption of alcoholic beverages, this study seeks to contribute to the knowledge of the relationships between these variables and in the elaboration of actions aimed at improving the lifestyle and health of university students.

RESUMO

Criminal practices in which an individual becomes vulnerable and prone to sexual assault after ingesting drinks spiked with doping substances have become a social concern globally. As forensic protocols require a multi-tiered strategy for chemical evidentiary analysis, the backlog of evidence has become a significant problem in the community. Herein, a fast, sensible, and complementary dual analytical methodology was developed using a single commercial paper substrate for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) analysis to identify psychotropic substances added to alcoholic beverages irrefutably. To study and investigate this criminal practice, pharmaceutical formulations containing distinct psychotropic substances (zolpidem, clonazepam, diazepam, and ketamine) were added to drinks typically consumed at parties and festivals (Pilsen beer, açaí Catuaba®, gin tonic, and vodka mixed with Coca-Cola Zero®). A simple liquid-liquid extraction with a low-temperature partitioning (LLE-LTP) procedure was applied to the drinks and effectively minimized matrix effects. As a preliminary analysis, SERS spectra combined with Hierarchical Clustering Analysis (HCA) provided sufficient information to investigate the samples further. The presence of the protonated species for the psychotropic substances in the spiked drinks was readily verified in the mass spectra and confirmed by tandem mass spectrometry. Finally, the results demonstrate the potential of this methodology to be easily implemented into the routine of forensic laboratories and to be further employed at harm reduction tends at parties and festivals to detect contaminated beverages promptly and irrefutably as an efficient tool to prevent such crimes.

RESUMO

The use of sensors in different applications to improve the monitoring of a process and its variables is required as it enables information to be obtained directly from the process by ensuring its quality. This is now possible because of the advances in the fabrication of sensors and the development of equipment with a high processing capability. These elements enable the development of portable smart systems that can be used directly in the monitoring of the process and the testing of variables, which, in some cases, must evaluated by laboratory tests to ensure high-accuracy measurement results. One of these processes is taste recognition and, in general, the classification of liquids, where electronic tongues have presented some advantages compared with traditional monitoring because of the time reduction for the analysis, the possibility of online monitoring, and the use of strategies of artificial intelligence for the analysis of the data. However, although some methods and strategies have been developed, it is necessary to continue in the development of strategies that enable the results in the analysis of the data from electrochemical sensors to be improved. In this way, this paper explores the application of an electronic tongue system in the classification of liquor beverages, which was directly applied to an alcoholic beverage found in specific regions of Colombia. The system considers the use of eight commercial sensors and a data acquisition system with a machine-learning-based methodology developed for this aim. Results show the advantages of the system and its accuracy in the analysis and classification of this kind of alcoholic beverage.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the potential impacts of visible and up-to-date health warning labels on alcoholic beverage containers on a range of outcomes in low- and middle-income countries. We conducted an experimental study to test the potential impacts of visible health warning labels (on the principal panel of the package) on thinking about health risks, product attractiveness, visual avoidance, and intention to change alcohol use among students in Mexico aged 18-30 years. METHODS: A double-blind, parallel-group, online randomized trial was conducted from November 2021 to January 2022 in 11 states in Mexico. In the control group, participants were presented with the image of a conventional beer can with a fictional design and brand. In the intervention groups, the participants observed pictograms with a red font and white backgrounds (health warning label in red-HWL red) or with a black font and yellow backgrounds (health warning label in yellow-HWL yellow), located at the top, covering around one-third of the beer can. We used Poisson regression models -unadjusted and adjusted for covariates- to assess differences in the outcomes across study groups. RESULTS: Using intention-to-treat analysis (n = 610), we found more participants in groups HWL red and HWL yellow thought about the health risks from drinking beer compared to the control group [Prevalence Ratio (PR) = 1.43, CI95%:1.05,1.93 for HWL red; PR = 1.25, CI95%: 0.91, 1.71 for HWL yellow]. A lower percentage of young adults in the interventions vs control group considered the product attractive (PR 0.74, 95%CI 0.51, 1.06 for HWL red; PR 0.56, 95%CI 0.38, 0.83 for HWL yellow). Although not statistically significant, a lower percentage of participants in the intervention groups considered buying or consuming the product than the control group. Results were similar when models were adjusted for covariates. CONCLUSIONS: Visible health warning labels could lead individuals to think about the health risks of alcohol, reducing the attractiveness of the product and decreasing the intention to purchase and consume alcohol. Further studies will be required to determine which pictograms or images and legends are most contextually relevant for the country. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The protocol of this study was retrospectively registered on 03/01/2023: ISRCTN10494244.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of weekly, monthly and abusive alcohol consumption in Brazil in 2013 and 2019, compare the period estimates, and verify the magnitude of the differences. METHODS: Analysis of data on alcohol consumption in the adult population (18 years or older) from the National Health Survey (PNS), 2013 and 2019. The number of interviewees in 2013 was 60,202 and 88,531 in 2019. The samples were characterized according to demographic, socioeconomic, health, and alcohol consumption variables and differences in proportions in the period were compared using Pearson's c2 test, with Rao-Scott approximation and a 5% significance level. Multivariate Poisson regression models were estimated for the outcome variables of monthly, weekly and abusive consumption of alcoholic beverages, in order to estimate the magnitude of the differences between the 2013 and 2019 PNS estimates, using the prevalence ratio (PR). Models were adjusted per sex and age group and stratified per sex and demographic region. RESULTS: There was a difference in the distribution of the population according to race, occupation, income, age group, marital status, and education. There was an increase in alcohol consumption for all outcome variables, with the exception of weekly consumption in males. The PR of weekly consumption was 1.02 (95%CI 1.014-1.026), and in females the PR was 1.05 (95%CI 1.04-1.06). The highest PRs in the general population and per sex occur for abusive consumption. The increase in weekly consumption per region occurred in the South, Southeast, and Central-West regions. CONCLUSIONS: Males are the main alcohol consumers in Brazil; the PRs for both males and females show that there was an increase in monthly, weekly and abusive consumption in the research period; it is noteworthy that females have increased their consumption pattern with greater intensity than males.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It has already been established that the consumption of alcoholic beverages increases high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels in dose-response. METHODS AND RESULTS: A cross-sectional analysis was carried out with 6132 participants of both sexes aged between 35 and 74 years, who were active and retired workers from six Brazilian states. Heavy drinkers were categorized by sex: men > 210 g/week and women > 140 g/week; moderate drinkers: men ≤ 209 g/week and women ≤ 139 g/week. The HDL-C level was dichotomized into normal (40 mg/dL-82.9 mg/dL) and extremely high (≥83 mg/dL). We used binary logistic regression to assess associations between baseline alcohol intake and HDL-C, which were adjusted for sex, age, income, physical activity, kilocalories and body mass index (BMI), and we found an positive association between extremely high HDL-C and the excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages. These participants were mostly women with a high income, lower waist circumference, kilocalorie consumption and also a higher consumption in all categories of alcoholic beverages. CONCLUSION: Excessive alcohol consumption was associated with a higher probability of extremely high HDL-C.

RESUMO

Acrolein is a toxic aldehyde that can be present in various beverages, such as cachaça and other distilled spirits from sugarcane. The objective of this work was to detect and quantify acrolein in samples of cachaça produced by different processes in all regions of Brazil and to evaluate the possible routes of formation of this contaminant from the correlation with other secondary compounds present in the beverage using principal component analysis. Approximately 27.0% of the samples analyzed were outside the limit established by Brazilian legislation for this contaminant, with an average acrolein concentration of 14.01 mg 100 mL-1 anhydrous alcohol (aa). In the other samples, the average concentration was 0.97 mg 100 mL-1 aa. After selecting the variables that most closely correlated with the presence of acrolein in beverages, a positive correlation was found with the presence of butan-2-ol, propan-1-ol and volatile acids, and a slight correlation with the presence of phenolic compounds. Therefore, the presence of acrolein in cachaça can be associated with contamination of the fermentation must by bacteria of the genus Lactobacillus, as a result of the chemical degradation and enzymatic conversion of the glycerol produced during fermentation.
