RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) cause a substantial health burden. Herein we studied the prevalence and characteristics of DGBI and symptoms of bloating/distension in El Paso, Texas on the US-Mexico border, providing a unique opportunity to study the effects of acculturation. METHODS: Subjects from community centers completed the Rome IV questionnaire for DGBI, short acculturation scale for Hispanics questionnaire, and bloating/distention Pictograms. Data were presented as prevalence (95% CI) and compared using χ 2 . RESULTS: Of 216 participants, 197 (127 Hispanics, 90 with English acculturation) were included and 177 completed the Pictograms. Fifty-one [25.9% (20 to 32.6)] subjects fulfilled the criteria for at least one DGBI. Globus and functional dyspepsia were the most common upper DGBI, each in [3.0% (1.1 to 6.5)]. Unspecified functional bowel disorders [8.6% (5.1 to 13.5)], followed by functional abdominal bloating/distention [8.1% (4.7 to 12.9], and irritable bowel syndrome [6.1% (3.2 to 10.4] were the most common functional bowel disorder. Ninety-one (51.4%) reported bloating and/or distension with Pictograms; more frequently in those with DGBI (80.9% vs 40.8%, P < 0.001). Bloating and/or distension were reported by Pictograms in 30% of those not reporting it in the Rome IV Questionnaire. There were no differences based on acculturation or in Hispanics versus non-Hispanics. CONCLUSIONS: On the US-Mexico border, we found a lower prevalence of DGBI than in the US or Mexico. Functional abdominal bloating/distention was more prevalent on the US-Mexico border than in either country. Bloating/distension was more commonly reported with Pictograms than with verbal descriptors. There were no differences between Hispanics and non-Hispanics, suggesting shared environmental/acquired including dietary factors as the underlying mechanisms.

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of two clarifying procedures and their effects on some properties in thermally or microwave-pasteurized pomegranate juices. The experiment consisted in combining pectinase and protease as well as chitosan and gelatin once they were being storedin the refrigerator. The experiment consisted in three parts, being the first one a fresh juice without any clarification treatment, whereas, the second one was the fresh juice treated with clarifying agent consisted of pectinaseand protease mixture ratio (2:1) at 0.75 v/v,and 50°C for 20 min. Finally, the third one was fresh juice treated with chitosan and gelatin mixture at 0.4 and 0.8) g/L, respectively, at 50°C for (20) min. The pasteurization of all three experiments was done by using two techniques, i.e., one with thermal water bath at 85°C for twomin and the microwave at 400 Watts for twomin. All pomegranate juice bottles were stored at 4°C for threemonths. The results showed a significant effect of the clarificationmethod variable on the properties studied, especially turbidity, polyphenol and anthocyanin values. Moreover, the juice clarified with the enzymatic clarification method had better characteristics than the traditional ones during storage, what has therefore a better commercial appeal. The area of significance was founded with the use of traditional clarification with concentration at (0.4 and 0.8) g/l, and microwave pasteurization with 400 watts and zero month of storage at 4°C, respectively, which is provided a minimum turbidity value.(AU)

BACKGROUND: There is no term for bloating in Spanish and distension is a very technical word. "Inflammation"/"swelling" are the most frequently used expressions for bloating/distension in Mexico, and pictograms are more effective than verbal descriptors (VDs) for bloating/distension in general GI and Rome III-IBS patients. However, their effectiveness in the general population and in subjects with Rome IV-DGBI is unknown. We analyzed the use of pictograms for assessing bloating/distension in the general population in Mexico. METHODS: The Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study (RFGES) in Mexico (n = 2001) included questions about the presence of VDs "inflammation"/"swelling" and abdominal distension, their comprehension, and pictograms (normal, bloating, distension, both). We compared the pictograms with the Rome IV question about the frequency of experiencing bloating/distension, and with the VDs. KEY RESULTS: "Inflammation"/"swelling" was reported by 51.5% and distension by 23.8% of the entire study population; while 1.2% and 25.3% did not comprehend "Inflammation"/"swelling" or distension, respectively. Subjects without (31.8%) or not comprehending "inflammation"/"swelling"/distension (68.4%) reported bloating/distension by pictograms. Bloating and/or distension by the pictograms were much more frequent in those with DGBI: 38.3% (95%CI: 31.7-44.9) vs. without: 14.5% (12.0-17.0); and in subjects with distension by VDs: 29.4% (25.4-33.3) vs. without: 17.2% (14.9-19.5). Among subjects with bowel disorders, those with IBS reported bloating/distension by pictograms the most (93.8%) and those with functional diarrhea the least (71.4%). CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES: Pictograms are more effective than VDs for assessing the presence of bloating/distension in Spanish Mexico. Therefore, they should be used to study these symptoms in epidemiological research.

BACKGROUND: In Latin America, there are scarce data on the epidemiology of DGBI. The Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study (RFGES) Internet survey included 26 countries, four from Latin America: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico, with a 40.3% prevalence of Rome IV DGBI. We aimed at comparing the prevalence of DGBI and associated factors among these countries. METHODS: The frequency of DGBI by anatomical region, specific diagnoses, sex, age, diet, healthcare access, anxiety, depression, and HRQOL, were analyzed and compared. RESULTS: Subjects included Argentina n = 2057, Brazil = 2004, Colombia = 2007, and Mexico = 2001. The most common DGBI were bowel (35.5%), gastroduodenal (11.9%), and anorectal (10.0%). Argentina had the highest prevalence of functional diarrhea (p = 0.006) and IBS-D; Brazil, esophageal, gastroduodenal disorders, and functional dyspepsia; Mexico functional heartburn (all <0.001). Overall, DGBI were more common in women vs. men and decreased with age. Bowel disorders were more common in the 18-39 (46%) vs. 40-64-year (39%) groups. Diet was also different between those with DGBI vs. those without with subtle differences between countries. Subjects endorsing criteria for esophageal, gastroduodenal, and anorectal disorders from Mexico, more commonly consulted physicians for bowel symptoms vs. those from Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia. General practitioners were the most frequently consulted, by Mexicans (50.42%) and Colombians (40.80%), followed by gastroenterologists. Anxiety and depression were more common in DGBI individuals in Argentina and Brazil vs. Mexico and Colombia, and they had lower HRQOL. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of upper and lower DGBI, as well as the burden of illness, psychological impact and HRQOL, differ between these Latin American countries.

ABSTRACT: Kassiano, W, Costa, B, Nunes, JP, Ribeiro, AS, Schoenfeld, BJ, and Cyrino, ES. Which ROMs lead to Rome? a systematic review of the effects of range of motion on muscle hypertrophy. J Strength Cond Res 37(5): 1135-1144, 2022-Resistance exercise range of motion (ROM) influences muscular adaptations. However, there are no consistent practical guidelines about the optimal ROM for maximizing muscle hypertrophy. The objective of this article was to systematically review the literature for studies that compared the effects of full ROM (fROM) and partial ROM (pROM) on muscle hypertrophy. PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched to identify articles from the earliest record up to and including April 2022. We calculated the effect size (ES) scores of the variables of interest. Eleven studies were included in the review. Full ROM and pROM performed in the initial part of the ROM elicited greater muscle hypertrophy of the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, biceps brachii, and brachialis distal sites (between-groups ES: 0.20-0.90) than pROM performed in the final part of the ROM. fROM elicited greater muscle growth on the gluteus maximus and adductors than pROM in the final part of the ROM (between-groups ES: 0.24-0.25). Initial pROM produced more favorable proximal rectus femoris hypertrophy than fROM (between-groups ES: 0.35-0.38). pROM in the middle part of the ROM elicited greater triceps brachii hypertrophy than fROM (between-group ES: 1.21). In conclusion, evidence suggests that when training at a longer muscle length-through either pROM or fROM-some muscles, such as quadriceps femoris, biceps brachii, and triceps brachii, tend to experience optimal growth. Thus, the use pROM in the initial part of the excursion in combination with fROM training should be considered when prescribing hypertrophy-oriented resistance training programs.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Reduced mastication could force the stomach to do extra work on crushing food and contribute to dyspeptic symptoms. This study aimed to assess the relationship between mastication and dyspepsia. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 209 consecutive patients referred for elective upper endoscopy. Before endoscopy, an expert dentist performed an oral examination and scored chewing function in three levels (normal, regular, and reduced), and applied questionnaires for assessment of dyspepsia (Rome IV), xerostomia, and mastication (normal, regular, and reduced). A reduced masticatory function was defined when an oral examination or mastication questionnaire rated the chewing as poor. Associations between mastication, confounders, and dyspepsia were estimated by prevalence ratio [PR (95% Confidence Interval)] using Poisson regression. RESULTS: Thirty-four patients showed relevant organic conditions in the upper gastrointestinal tract (moderate to severe reflux oesophagitis, peptic ulcer, neoplasia, and surgical modification) and were excluded. Among 175 patients with non-organic diseases (aging 51.3 ± 15.7 years; 61.7% women), 50 (28.6%) had reduced mastication, and 125 (71.4%) had normal/regular mastication. After adjusting for age and xerostomia, reduced mastication was associated with postprandial distress syndrome [PR = 1.93 (95%CI 1.27 - 2.91)] but not with epigastric pain syndrome [PR = 1.09 (95%CI 0.75 - 1.60)]. CONCLUSIONS: In patients referred for upper digestive endoscopy, reduced mastication was associated with postprandial distress syndrome but not with epigastric pain syndrome. An interdisciplinary approach with dentists and physicians might benefit dyspeptic patients with postprandial distress syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) in children according to Rome IV criteria. METHODS: We included cohorts and observational descriptive studies, including information for the prevalence of FGIDs according to Rome IV criteria in children 4 to 18 years old. We searched the MEDLINE (Ovid), EMBASE, LILACS, and CENTRAL databases from May 2016 to nowadays. Gray literature and other databases were also consulted. The risk of bias was assessed using the STROBE Statement. The results were reported in forest plots of the estimated effects of the included studies with a 95% confidence interval (95%CI). RESULTS: We included 14 studies involving a total of 17427 participants. Three studies were conducted in Europe, two in North America, and nine in Latin America. Most studies were school-based (n=14670, 84.18%), participants were mostly female (55.49%), white (51.73%), 8 to 18 years old (77.64%), and assisted to a public school (81.53%). Thirteen studies used the Questionnaire on Pediatric Gastrointestinal Symptoms (QPGS-RIV) to assess FGIDs. We found a global prevalence for FGIDs of 23% (95%CI 21-25%, I2 99%). Main disorders were functional constipation (FC) with 12% (95%CI 11-15%) followed by functional dyspepsia (FD) (5%, 95%CI 11-15%) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) (3%, 95%CI 2-4%). The prevalence of FGIDs was higher in the Americas, representing 23.67% (95%CI 21.2-26.2%, I2 91.3%). CONCLUSION: FGIDs are present in one of four children and adolescents, representing a common condition in this age group the central disorders were FC, FD, and IBS.

The nomadic behavior of Roma people has allowed their cultural interaction with people from different continents. Brazil has received Roma immigrants since its colonization, and there are currently more than 800,000 Roma people among the Brazilian population. This article describes the ethnobotanical knowledge of two Calon families (Alves a nd Dantas) esta blished in hinterland cities of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. The survey was conducted with 23 informants (≥ 40 years old, 85% of the target audience) selected through the snowball technique and using semi - structured interviews. The plants mentioned wer e collected, identified and deposited in the IPA and UFP herbaria. The 157 species (85 native) are used for food, condiment, cosmetic, medicinal, ritualistic, technological, veterinary, and other purposes. The useful flora and forms of use are similar to t hose reported by non - Roma communities living in the same region, showing a kind of mimicry adopted by the Roma people, yet maintaining their cultural identity.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most frequent disorders in clinical practice, with a mean 7.6-10.8% worldwide prevalence. A study showed that 6.1% of patients with diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D) had severe exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). We aimed to identify the prevalence of EPI based on fecal elastase stool testing (Fel-1) in IBS-D and the clinical characteristics that may predict the diagnosis of EPI. METHODS: Patients aged > 18 years presenting to tertiary hospital outpatient clinics with IBS-D completed validated questionnaires and gave a stool sample where Fel-1 concentration was measured. Patients with Fel-1 < 100 µg/g represented EPI and > 100 to < 200 µg/g underwent testing for pancreatic pathology with laboratory and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) evaluation. RESULTS: One hundred forty patients (mean age 60 years, females 75.7%) were studied. EPI was found in 5% (95% CI 2.2-10.4), and pancreatic steatosis was the main EUS finding (71%). Dyspepsia was an independent factor associated with EPI (OR 34.7; 95% CI 4.95-366.37, p = 0.0007). After pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT), patients showed a significant improvement in the Bristol stool scale (p < 0.0001), bowel movements per day (p < 0.005), distension score (0.0009), pain score (0.0277) and IBS severity (0.0034). CONCLUSION: EPI is present in 5% of patients who fulfill Rome IV criteria for D-IBS, and dyspepsia was an independent symptom strongly associated with EPI. Pancreatic steatosis was the main endoscopic ultrasound finding. After PERT therapy, patients had significantly improved stool frequency, stool consistency, abdominal pain, distension and IBS severity score.

To evaluate the agreement between the Rome III and Rome IV criteria in diagnosing pediatric functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), we conducted a prospective cohort study in a public school in Cali, Colombia. Children and adolescents between 11 and 18 years of age were given the Spanish version of the Questionnaire on Pediatric Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders Rome III version on day 0 and Rome IV version on day 2 (48 h later). The study protocol was completed by 135 children. Thirty-nine (28.9%) children were excluded because of not following the instructions of the questionnaire. The final analysis included data of 96 children (mean 15.2 years old, SD ± 1.7, 54% girls). Less children fulfilled the criteria for an FGID according to Rome IV compared to Rome III (40.6% vs 29.2%, p=0.063) resulting in a minimal agreement between the two criteria in diagnosing an FGID (kappa 0.34, agreement of 70%). The prevalence of functional constipation according to Rome IV was significantly lower compared to Rome III (13.5% vs 31.3%, p<0.001), whereas functional dyspepsia had a higher prevalence according to Rome IV than Rome III (11.5% vs 0%).Conclusion: We found an overall minimal agreement in diagnosing FGIDs according to Rome III and Rome IV criteria. This may be partly explained by the differences in diagnostic criteria. However, limitations with the use of questionnaires to measure prevalence have to be taken into account. What is Known: ⢠The Rome IV criteria replaced the previous Rome III criteria providing updated criteria to diagnose functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). ⢠Differences found between Rome IV and historic Rome III FGID prevalence may have been affected by changes in prevalence over time or differences in sample characteristics. What is New: ⢠We found a minimal agreement between Rome III and Rome IV FGID diagnosis, especially in the diagnoses of functional constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and functional dyspepsia. ⢠The minimal agreement may be partly explained by changes in diagnostic criteria, but limitations with the use of questionnaires to measure prevalence have to be taken into account.

ABSTRACT: The diagnosis of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) centers on symptoms-based criteria (Rome criteria). The last edition of the criteria was published in 2016. Still, few data on its validity support its use in children. We conducted a study aimed at determining the diagnostic accuracy of the Rome IV criteria through the application of questionnaires (Questionnaire of Pediatric Gastrointestinal Symptoms-Rome IV QPGS-IV) to diagnose FGIDs in children. We hypothesized that the Rome IV criteria has adequate diagnostic accuracy supporting its use for diagnosing FGIDs in children. METHODS: School children ages 10 to 18âyears from Cali (Colombia) completed the Spanish version of the QPGS-IV. Children with FGIDs were matched with a group of children without FGIDs. Both groups had a medical consultation with a blinded experienced pediatric gastroenterologist (criterion standard) who provided his diagnosis. The questionnaire-based diagnoses were compared with the consultation's diagnoses. RESULTS: Of 487 schoolchildren surveyed with the QPGS-IV, 97 (20.8%) had FGIDs. Eighty-nine with FGIDs were matched with 92 children without FGIDs (mean age 13.1âyears [±1.3]). We found a higher prevalence of FGIDs during the medical visit than using the self-report QPGS-IV (66.3% vs 49.2%, Pâ=â0.001), mainly in abdominal pain disorders (19.3% vs 10.5%, Pâ=â0.013). The Rome IV diagnostic criteria using the QPGS-IV had a sensitivity of 75% (95% confidence interval, 59-79) and 90% specificity (95% confidence interval, 83-98). Positive predictive value is 85.8%, and negative predictive value is 79.9%. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that the QPGS-IV has adequate diagnostic accuracy.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the representation of gypsies in the Umbanda pantheon and the characteristic ways of using it and the psychological sense of its inclusion in this context. For this purpose, ethnographic research was carried out and a database was consulted with audiovisual records of Umbanda rituals and interviews with mediums incorporated and not incorporated by gypsy spirits. Data analysis was performed based on the identification of points of convergence, that is, the elements that were repeated in direct and indirect observations (audiovisual records), in interviews and in the field notes. Then a comparison was made with what the literature refers to in relation to other categories of spirits. It was found that the so-called gypsy line, from an ethnopsychological point of view, does not add new symbolic content to Umbanda, but rather redirects previously existing meanings in a perspective of the future.

The present study aimed to evaluate the in vitro anthelmintic efficacy of flor-de-seda (Calotropis procera S.W.) and pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) extracts on gastrointestinal nematode eggs of Japanese quails. Stool samples were collected from a herd of 5,000 adult birds raised on the floor at a commercial farm in the state of Ceará, Brazil. The samples were packed in plastic bags, kept refrigerated and transported for laboratory analysis. The eggs were placed in 2.5 ml of the suspension and 2.5 ml of flor-de-seda and pomegranate extracts in concentrations of 50; 25; 12.5; 6.25 and 3.12%. Readings were subsequently taken at 24, 48 and 72 hours. The aqueous pomegranate extract at 25 and 50% was more efficient on the larvae hatching. The flor-de-seda aqueous extract in both concentrations and evaluation periods showed similar action to that of the positive control treatment (Albendazole 10%). The pomegranate and flor-de-seda aqueous extracts have anthelmintic activity on the development of larvae in eggs of the Heterakoidea Superfamily and are therefore presented as an alternative to replace the drugs commonly used to control helminths in Japanese quails.

Comprising successive phases of the moment of protection, learning and preparation to become adults, gypsy children are being raised for a life in group and geared towards the family nucleus. Based on the concepts of ethnic socialization and social identity, the study was developed in order to analyze the psychosocial universe of Calin childhood among Calon children in the State of Espírito Santo. Seven children aged between 4 and 12 years participated in the study. They make up the third generation of the community, the first one after the process of territorial settlement. The interviews were guided by a semi-structured script exploring the universes of Gypsy law, group traditions and everyday experiences, as well as drawing techniques in order to know the images of oneself, the family and the future. All the interviews were carried out in the Gypsy camp and the data were analyzed through the thematic content analysis approach. The main results showed that Calin children emphasize in their narratives the experience of Gypsy law and traditions through the use of typical dress and Caló language, residence in tents and obedience to norms for marriage, as well as routines involving games, schooling and mediation activities for the adult universe. In this scenario, the resistance movements of the group rise, in which the new generation will have to protect the essential identity elements of the Gypsy culture and create resources to maintain their sociability in transit on the borders with the non-Gypsy world....(AU)

In the latter half of the sixteenth century the Roman Inquisition developed criteria to prosecute a series of operative arts, including various forms of divination and magic. Its officials had little interest in alchemy. During that period the Roman Inquisition tried few people for practising alchemy, and it was rarely discussed in official documents. Justifications for prosecuting alchemists did exist, however. In his influential handbook, Directorium inquisitorum, the fourteenth-century inquisitor Nicholas Eymerich had developed a clear rationale for the investigation and prosecution of alchemists as heretics. His position was endorsed in the 1570s by Francisco Peña in his commentary on Eymerich's handbook. In this article I explore the reasons why alchemy held this ambiguous status. I argue that members of the Dominican Order developed two traditions of thinking about alchemy from Aquinas's thought. The first, and closest to Aquinas's own belief, held that alchemy was a natural art that posed no danger to the Christian faith. The second, developed by Eymerich from a selective reading of Aquinas's writings, indicated specific circumstances in which alchemists could be investigated. The Roman Inquisition's response to alchemy vacillated between the positions advocated by Aquinas and Eymerich.
