ABSTRACT

Objective: we present the findings of a grounded theory study designed to gain a critical understanding of theexperience of side effects of treatment for HIV. Method: this study was undertaken in Canada’s capital region with50 participants through a questionnaire. Data analysis began with the initial line-by-line coding of key interviews.After it were categorized. Results: three main categories emerged from the data the side effects, the experience, andthe connections. Conclusion: the first category suggests that we need to change how we think about side effects inorder to take into account the context in which they are experienced as well as the types and nature of side effects.The second category puts forward the idea that the experience of side effects is composed of three interrelatedprocesses becoming with, living with, and dealing with. Finally, the third category points to new connections thatare formed with people, things and systems in the presence of side effects.

RESUMO

Objetivo: apresentar os resultados de um estudo da teoria fundamentada destinado a obter uma compreensão críticada experiência de efeitos colaterais do tratamento para HIV. Método: foi realizado no Canadá com 50 participantespor um questionário. Os dados foram analizados por codificação linha-a-linha de entrevistas chave e categorizados.Resultados: três categorias emergiram dos dados efeitos colaterais, experiência e conexões. Conclusão: a primeiracategoria sugere que é preciso mudar a forma como pensamos sobre os efeitos colaterais, a fim de ter em conta ocontexto em que eles são experenciados, bem como os tipos e natureza dos efeitos secundários. A segunda categoriaavança a ideia de que a experiência de efeitos colaterais é composta por três processos inter-relacionados tornarsecom, viver com e lidar com. Finalmente, a terceira categoria aponta para novas ligações que se formam com aspessoas, as coisas e sistemas, na presença de efeitos colaterais.
