Admission to higher education presents itself as a multiple transition, in the lives of students at levels that are understood to be crisis enhancers (Morais [et. al.], 2019). In this sense, Health Promotion is essential for students to be able to develop skills to deal with these challenges and in the future as future professionals. Objective:
To assess the Positive Mental Health of Higher Education Students (HES); to assess Mental Health knowledge of HES; to relate the Positive Mental Health of HES with the socio-affective aspects; to relate the Mental Health knowledge of HES with the socio-affective aspects; to correlate the Positive Mental Health and Mental Health knowledge of HES; to propose recommendations within the scope of the study and intervention setting. Methods:
A cross-sectional, analytical-correlational, and observational study with a sample of 183 Higher Education Students. Data were collected between December 2019 and March 2020, using online sociodemographic questionnaires (Sequeira, Ferreira, Carvalho, Ribeiro e Pires, 2018); Positive Mental Health Questionnaire (Sequeira [et. al.], 2014); Mental Health Literacy Questionnaire (Chaves, Sequeira e Duarte, 2019).Results:
The most respondents are female (80,3%), with 53% displaced from their family home. Regarding habits, more than half of the HES are not satisfied with their sleep (60,7%), 67,8% report that they do not sleep enough hours to satisfy their needs, most do not regularly exercise (76,5%) and 28,4% consider not having a healthy diet. Also, to mention that 46,4% assume consumption of alcoholic beverages and 4,4% still admit the consumption of illicit psychoactive substances. Although the overall score obtained in the Positive Mental Health Questionnaire is 72 points, corresponding to a high level of Positive Mental Health, from the detailed analysis of the results a number of worrying aspects emerge, namely 32,8% of the respondents are at the intermediate level; 36,1% of the HES report having psychological or psychiatric monitoring. Female students, those who consume alcoholic beverages and/or hashish, heroin, cocaine, LSD have worse Positive Mental Health. The average value obtained by the HES in the Mental Health Literacy Questionnaire is 60,7+9,19, suggesting decreased values of knowledge in Mental Health. Conclusion:
From the evidence found, there is a need to (co) build training paths more oriented towards the development of socio-emotional skills through both the academic curriculum and the intervention in this setting from a salutogenic perspective. In this way, the intervention of Community Nursing is challenged in the context of promoting the Health of the of HES.
