OBJECTIVE:
To identify the effect of glibenclamide on the modification of plasma lipoproteins in type 2 diabetic patients with diabetic macroangiopathy.METHODS:
Twenty type 2 diabetic patients were studied (glibenclamide and diet) and 20non-diabetic supposedly healthy persons. Following variables were measured Glycemia, HbA1c, the glycosylation degree of lipoproteins [(VLDL + LDL) glcl], total cholesterol, C-HDL, C-VLDL, C-LDL, triglycerides, lipid peroxides, conjugated diens - LDL (DC-LDL) and the C and E antioxidant vitamins.RESULTS:
Comparing the diabetic groups amongst themselves, it was noted that the glibenclamide group showed a proper glycemic control and lipid profile. Also, there was a decrease (p<0,05) in levels of [(VLDL + LDL) glc], DC-LDL, DC-LDL/Col - LDL and lipid peroxides and an increase (p<0,05) in levels of vitamin E and the vitamin ratio E/C-LDL. There were significant linear correlations (p < 0,05) between the [VLDL + LDL) glc] with glycemia (r = + 0,766) and the HbA1c (r = + 0,80) as well as an association among the values of DC-LDL with the lipid peroxides (r = + 0,53), [(VLDL + LDL) glc] (r = + 0,51) y vitamin C (r = - 0,48) and E (r = - 0,69). The treatment with glibenclamide protects type 2 diabetic patients against toxic effects of hyperglycemia decreasing the levels of modified lipoproteins due to non-enzymatic glycosylation and oxidative stress(AU)
