Machado de Assis: um homem genial? / Machado de Assis: an talented man?

RESUMO

INTRODUÇÃO: O texto que se segue é resultado da palestra proferida no dia 9 de setembro de 2008, no Evento "Dia Latino-Americano da Epilepsia", organizado pela Associação Brasileira de Epilepsia, sob a presidência da Doutora Laura Guilhoto, e realizado no Anfiteatro Franco Monto, na Assembléia Legislativa de São Paulo. MÉTODOS: Ao apresentar Machado de Assis a partir de alguns aspectos de sua vida, pretende-se compreender a configuração da sociedade brasileira do século XIX, bem como a força de revelação crítica de sua obra. RESULTADOS: A biografia do escritor nos permite entrever um modelo de homem e artista, alguém que superou barreiras a ele impostas numa dada circunstância histórica, social e pessoal, incluída nesta as questões relativas à saúde. O esforço e a luta do homem Machado de Assis são muito significativos, se lembrarmos que até hoje não é "natural" vencer preconceitos, migrar de classe ou obter igualdade de oportunidades. CONCLUSÃO: A glória obtida por Machado de Assis ainda em vida é exemplar, jamais se entregando ele ao "descanso dos consagrados" que, comodamente instalados na fama, voltam as costas aos problemas da gente comum, rendendo-se ao conformismo.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: This article is derived from the lecture given in September 9th 2008, during the Celebration of the "Latin American Day of Epilepsy", which was organized by The Brazilian Association of Epilepsy, under the presidency of Doctor Laura Guilhoto, and took place in the State Congress of São Paulo, at the Franco Montoro Hall. METHODS: By presenting some aspects of Machado de Assis' life, the aim here is to understand the structure of Brazilian society in the 19th century, as well as the critical unveiling strength of his work. RESULTS: The biography of the writer allows us to have a model of a man and an artist, who surpassed his imposed social and personal barriers in a specific historical circumstance, including the relative questions to his health. The effort and the fight of Machado de Assis are very significant, and we must always remember that until nowadays it is not "natural" to win preconceptions, to move socially or to get equal opportunities. CONCLUSIONS: The achievements made by Machado de Assis during his life are exemplary. He has never surrogated, as the "rest of the consecrated personalities" do, which comfortably installed in the fame and surrounded by the conformism, always forget about the problems of the common people.
