ABSTRACT
During the last decades, the burnout syndrome has become a serious public health issue in industrialized countries. It is defined as a labor syndrome that mostly affects people who work in a direct relationship with other individuals, in health or educational institutions. This pathology was first described in the 70's and a great amount of researches have since then tried to thoroughly establish its symptoms, causal factors and main consequences for the workers' mental and physical health. The objective of the present articles to deliver an updated view on the main findings and contributions developed in this research fields. At the same time, it sets out the most important difficulties and challenges that still persist, not only from a theoretical perspective, but also in terms of intervention and prevention. This general scenario is focused, in the first place, on the contributions made by the empirical quantitative investigation. On the other hand, it describes some contributions made by the psychoanalytical field that complements the previous ones. The present work also enhances the importance that two phenomena have towards the investigation on occupational welfare related to the burnout syndrome, such as labor involvement and workaholism.
