Introduction:
The immunotherapy with allergens is the only treatment that is able to modify the natural development of asthma. Material andmethod:
Clinical research, controlled. Patients (age range 3-5 years) who attended Servicio de Alergia e Inmunología del Hospital de Niños de la Santísima Trinidad de la Ciudad de Córdoba (Argentina). The patients were divided into two groups at random, one with onlypharmacologic therapy and the other with pharmacologic therapy and allergen vaccines. All patients were checkedduring a year. Results:
32 children completed the study. Both groups were comparable in terms of age, sex and diseasecharacteristics. Pharmacologic therapy group 16 patients, 15 male, 1 female. Average age 4. Pharmacologic therapyand allergen vaccine 16 patients, 11 male and 5 female. Average age 3,75. The patients with only pharmacologic therapyhave a higher average of days with respiratory symptoms (p= 0.0001).The average doses of Salbutamol is higherin the pharmacologic therapy group (p=0.0001). The patients with only pharmacologic therapy received more doses ofBudesonide on average (p=0.0001). The patients with only pharmacologic therapy need more time to change the diagnosisof asthma from moderate to mild (p=0.0001). No adverse reactions were shown by the patients treated in bothgroups. Conclusion:
The data obtained in this research from children under 5 years old who received specific immunotherapywith standardized extracts of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae presented goodclinical evolution with fall of symptoms, number of hospital admissions, and anti asthmatic drug use when comparedwith pharmacologic therapy. This treatment did not present adverse reactions in all patients with immunotherapy. Thistreatment is indicated at early stage of asthma and probably changes the natural history of asthma evolution.
