Hypoparathyroidism following thyroidectomy

ABSTRACT

1. A study has been made of the incidence of "inadvertent parathyroidectomy" which occurred in about 10 percent of cases in a personal series. 2. Removal of parathyroid glands has not been associated with persistent parathyroid insufficiency. 3. Parathyroid insufficiency may occur in the absence of parathyroid gland removal but the experience of other workers has not been confirmed. 4. Operative steps to avoid parathyroid damage and certain other precautions are briefly discussed (AU)
