ABSTRACT
As a special group of newborns, small for gestational age (SGA) has high morbidity and mortality in perinatal period, and survivors often leave many health problems and sequelae.Early active nutritional support is beneficial to improve physical growth and nervous system development, and improve immunity, but rapid growth is also associated with obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and so on.How to balance the advantages and disadvantages and achieve optimal catch-up growth is an important challenge for SGA nutritional support. This paper reviews the characteristics of SGA growth and development, nutritional requirements, feeding strategies and growth rate, in order to provide a basis for further research on feeding guidelines for children younger than gestational age.
