RESUMEN

The shortage of transplant organs remains a severe global issue. Normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) has the potential to increase organ availability, yet its efficacy is hampered by the inflammatory response during machine perfusion. Mouse liver ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) models, discarded human liver models, and porcine marginal liver transplantation models were utilized to investigate whether farnesoid X receptor (FXR) activation could mitigate inflammation-induced liver damage. FXR expression levels before and after reperfusion were measured. Gene editing and coimmunoprecipitation techniques were employed to explore the regulatory mechanism of FXR in inflammation inhibition. The expression of FXR correlates with the extent of liver damage after reperfusion. Activation of FXR significantly suppressed the inflammatory response triggered by IRI, diminished the release of proinflammatory cytokines, and improved liver function recovery during NMP, assisting discarded human livers to reach transplant standards. Mechanistically, FXR disrupts the interaction between p65 and p300, thus inhibiting modulating the nuclear factor kappa-B signaling pathway, a key instigator of inflammation. Our research across multiple species confirms that activating FXR can optimize NMP by attenuating IRI-related liver damage, thereby improving the utilization of marginal livers for transplantation.

RESUMEN

HRS9432(A) is a long-acting echinocandin antifungal medication primarily used to treat invasive fungal infections, particularly invasive candidiasis. The safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetic characteristics of HRS9432(A) injection were investigated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, single- and multiple-ascending-dose Phase I study involving 56 healthy adult subjects. Doses ranging from 200 to 1200 mg were administered. Safety was continually monitored, including adverse events, clinical laboratory examinations, vital signs, 12-lead electrocardiograms, and physical examinations, while the pharmacokinetic profile within the body was evaluated. The results indicated that concentrations of HRS9432 peaked immediately after infusion, demonstrating essentially linear pharmacokinetic characteristics within the dosage range of 200-1,200 mg. It exhibited a low clearance rate and an extended half-life, with a clearance of approximately 0.2 L/h, a volume of distribution of around 40 L, and a half-life of approximately 140h following a single dose. The accumulation index for AUC0-τ after multiple doses ranged from 1.41 to 1.75. No severe adverse events occurred during the study, and the severity of all adverse events was mild or moderate. Therefore, the intravenous administration of HRS9432(A) in healthy Chinese adult subjects, either as multiple infusions of 200 to 600 mg (once a week, four doses) or as a single infusion of 900-1,200 mg, demonstrated overall good safety and tolerability. The pharmacokinetic exhibited essentially linear characteristics in the body, supporting a weekly dosing frequency for clinical applications and providing additional options for the treatment or prevention of invasive fungal infections. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The global incidence of liver diseases is rising, yet there remains a dearth of precise research models to mimic these diseases. The use of normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) to study diseased livers recovered from liver transplantation (LT) recipients presents a promising avenue. Accordingly, we have developed a machine perfusion system tailored specifically for the human whole diseased livers and present our experience from the NMP of diseased livers. METHODS: Six diseased livers recovered from LT recipients with different diagnoses were collected. The diseased livers were connected to the machine perfusion system that circulated tailored perfusate, providing oxygen and nutrients. The pressure and flow of the system were recorded, and blood gas analysis and laboratory tests of perfusate and bile were examined to analyze the function of the diseased livers. Liver tissues before and after NMP were collected for histological analysis. RESULTS: Experiments showed that the system maintained the diseased livers in a physiological state, ensuring stable hemodynamics and a suitable partial pressure of oxygen and carbon dioxide. The results of blood gas analysis and laboratory tests demonstrated a restoration and sustenance of metabolism with minimal damage. Notably, a majority of the diseased livers exhibited bile production continuously, signifying their vivid functional integrity. The pathological characteristics remained stable before and after NMP. CONCLUSION: We successfully established the machine perfusion system tailored specifically for diseased human whole livers. Through the application of this system, we have developed a novel in vitro model that faithfully recapitulates the main features of human liver disease. This model holds immense promise as an advanced disease modeling platform, offering profound insights into liver diseases and potential implications for research and therapeutic development.

RESUMEN

Generalized pustular psoriasis is a rare variant of psoriasis. Evidence recommending generalized pustular psoriasis treatment with secukinumab is limited. This report aims to evaluate the use of secukinumab in two patients with generalized pustular psoriasis. The standard treatment regimen for secukinumab was as follows: 300mg subcutaneously once weekly in weeks 0-4, followed by 300mg every four weeks. The efficacy was evaluated by analyzing the psoriasis area and severity index (PASI) and dermatology life quality index (DLQI). One patient had generalized pustular psoriasis, which had developed from palmoplantar pustulosis over 12 years. The second patient was an adolescent with recurrent generalized pustular psoriasis. The first patient achieved PASI-75 response by week 3 and both PASI-90 and a DLQI score of 0 were observed by week 8. The second patient achieved PASI-75 response by week 4 and complete clinical resolution, except for nail changes, and a DLQI of 0 by week 8, without any adverse events.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Although great progress has made in gastric cancer (GC) in the past years, the overall 5-year survival rate remains to be low for advanced GC patients. A recent study showed that PLAGL2 was increased in GC and enhanced the proliferation and metastasis of GC. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism still needs to be investigated. METHODS: Gene and protein expressions were assessed using RT-qPCR and western blot. The migration, proliferation and invasion of GC cells were examined using scratch assay, CCK-8 assay and Transwell assay, respectively. ChIP-PCR, dual-luciferase assay, RIP-qPCR and CoiP were utilized to confirm the interaction among PLAGL2, UCA1, miR-145-5p and YTHDF1 as well as METTL3, YTHDF1 and eEF-2. A mouse xenograft model was used utilized to further confirm the regulatory network. RESULTS: PLAGL2 bound to the upstream promoter of UCA1, which regulated YTHDF1 by sponging miR-145-5p. METTL3 can mediate the m6A modification level of Snail. YTHDF1 recognized m6A-modified Snail by interacting with eEF-2 and thus promoted Snail expression, which eventually induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in GC cells and metastasis of GC. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our study demonstrates that PLAGL2 enhances Snail expression and GC progression via the UCA1/miR-145-5p/YTHDF1 axis, suggesting that PLAGL2 may become a therapeutic target for GC treatment.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) has thus far been considered as an inevitable component of organ transplantation, compromising outcomes, and limiting organ availability. Ischemia-free organ transplantation is a novel approach designed to avoid IRI, with the potential to improve outcomes. METHODS: In this randomized-controlled clinical trial, recipients of livers from donors after brain death were randomly assigned to receive either an ischemia-free or a 'conventional' transplant. The primary endpoint was the incidence of early allograft dysfunction. Secondary endpoints included complications related to graft IRI. RESULTS: Out of 68 randomized patients, 65 underwent transplants and were included in the analysis. 32 patients received ischemia-free liver transplantation (IFLT), and 33 received conventional liver transplantation (CLT). Early allograft dysfunction occurred in two recipients (6%) randomized to IFLT and in eight (24%) randomized to CLT (difference -18%; 95% CI -35% to -1%; p = 0.044). Post-reperfusion syndrome occurred in three recipients (9%) randomized to IFLT and in 21 (64%) randomized to CLT (difference -54%; 95% CI -74% to -35%; p <0.001). Non-anastomotic biliary strictures diagnosed with protocol magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography at 12 months were observed in two recipients (8%) randomized to IFLT and in nine (36%) randomized to CLT (difference, -28%; 95% CI -50% to -7%; p = 0.014). The comprehensive complication index at 1 year after transplantation was 30.48 (95% CI 23.25-37.71) in the IFLT group vs. 42.14 (95% CI 35.01-49.26) in the CLT group (difference -11.66; 95% CI -21.81 to -1.51; p = 0.025). CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with end-stage liver disease, IFLT significantly reduced complications related to IRI compared to a conventional approach. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: chictr.org. ChiCTR1900021158. IMPACT AND IMPLICATIONS: Ischemia-reperfusion injury has thus far been considered as an inevitable event in organ transplantation, compromising outcomes and limiting organ availability. Ischemia-free liver transplantation is a novel approach of transplanting donor livers without interruption of blood supply. We showed that in patients with end-stage liver disease, ischemia-free liver transplantation, compared with a conventional approach, led to reduced complications related to ischemia-reperfusion injury in this randomized trial. This new approach is expected to change the current practice in organ transplantation, improving transplant outcomes, increasing organ utilization, while providing a clinical model to delineate the impact of organ injury on alloimmunity.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Considering the limitation of varying acid suppression of proton pump inhibitors, this study was aimed to assess the efficacy, safety, and dose-effect relationship of keverprazan, a novel potassium-competitive acid blocker, in the treatment of duodenal ulcer (DU) compared with lansoprazole. METHODS: A randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, multicenter, low-dose, high-dose, and positive-drug parallel-controlled study was conducted to verify the non-inferiority of keverprazan (20 or 30 mg) to lansoprazole of 30 mg once daily for 4 to 6 weeks and dose-effect relationship of keverprazan in the treatment of patients with active DU confirmed by endoscopy. RESULTS: Of the 180 subjects randomized, including 55 cases in the keverprazan_20 mg group, 61 cases in the keverprazan_30 mg group, and 64 cases in the lansoprazole_30 mg group, 168 subjects (93.33%) completed the study. The proportions of healed DU subjects in the keverprazan_20 mg, keverprazan_30 mg, and lansoprazole_30 mg groups were respectively 87.27%, 90.16%, and 79.69% at week 4 (P = 0.4595) and were respectively 96.36%, 98.36%, and 92.19% at week 6 (P = 0.2577). The incidence of adverse events in the keverprazan_20 mg group was lower than that in the lansoprazole_30 mg (P = 0.0285) and keverprazan_30 mg groups (P = 0.0398). CONCLUSIONS: Keverprazan was effective and non-inferior to lansoprazole in healing DU. Based on the comparable efficacy and safety data, keverprazan of 20 mg once daily is recommended for the follow-up study of acid-related disorders. (Trial registration number: ChiCTR2100043455.).

RESUMEN

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, commonly known as drones, have been widely used in transmission line inspection and traffic patrolling due to their flexibility and environmental adaptability. To take advantage of drones and overcome their limited endurance, the patrolling tasks are parallelized by concurrently dispatching the drones from a truck which travels on the road network to the nearby task arc. The road network considered in previous research is undirected; however, in reality, the road network usually contains unidirectional arcs, i.e., the road network is asymmetric. Hence, we propose an asymmetric coordinated vehicle-drones arc routing mode for traffic patrolling. In this mode, a truck travelling on an asymmetric road network with multiple drones needs to patrol multiple task arcs, and the drones can be launched and recovered at certain nodes on the truck route, making it possible for drones and the truck to patrol the task in parallel. The total patrol time is the objective function that needs to be minimized given the time limit constraints of drones. The whole problem can be considered as an asymmetric arc routing problem of coordinating a truck and multiple drones. To solve this problem, a large-scale neighborhood search with simulated annealing algorithm (LNS-SA) is proposed. Finally, extensive computation experiments and a real case are carried out. The experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. Moreover, a detailed sensitivity analysis is performed on several drone-parameters of interest.

RESUMEN

Proteins with hetero-bimetallic metal centers can catalyze important reactions and are challenging to design. Azurin is a mononuclear copper center that has been extensively studied for electron transfer. Here we inserted the lanthanide binding tag (LBT), which binds lanthanide with sub µM affinity, into the copper binding loop of azurin, while keeping the type 1 copper center unperturbed. The resulting protein, Az-LBT, which has two metal bonding centers, shows strong luminescence upon coordination with Tb3+ and luminescence quenching upon Cu2+ binding. The in vitro luminescence quenching has high metal specificity and a limit-of-detection of 0.65 µM for Cu2+. With the low background from lanthanide's long luminescence lifetime, bacterial cells expressing Az-LBT in the periplasm also shows sensitivity for metal sensing.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The copper metabolism MURR1 domain (COMMD) protein family involved in tumor development and progression in several types of human cancer, but little is known about the function of COMMD proteins in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: The ONCOMINE and the UALCAN databases were used to evaluate the expression of COMMD1-10 in HCC and the association of this family with individual cancer stage and tumor grade. Kaplan-Meier (K-M) Plotter and Cox analysis hint the prognostic value of COMMDs. A network comprising 50 most similar genes and COMMD1-10 was constructed with the STRING database. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was performed using LinkedOmics database. The correlations between COMMD expression and the presence of immune infiltrating cells were also analyzed by the tumor immune estimation resource (TIMER) database. GSE14520 dataset and 80 HCC patients were used to validated the expression and survival value of COMMD3. Human HCC cell lines were also used for validating the function of COMMD3. RESULTS: The expression of all COMMD family members showed higher expression in HCC tissues than that in normal tissues, and is associated with clinical cancer stage and pathological tumor grade. In HCC patients, the transcriptional levels of COMMD1/4 are positively correlated with overall survival (OS), while those of COMMD2/3/7/8/9 are negatively correlated with OS. Multivariate analysis indicated that a high level of COMMD3 mRNA is an independent prognostic factor for shorter OS in HCC patients. However, the subset of patients with grade 3 HCC, K-M survival curves revealed that high COMMD3/5/7/8/9 expression and low COMMD4/10 expression were associated with shorter OS. In addition, the expression of COMMD2/3/10 was associated with tumor-induced immune response activation and immune infiltration in HCC. The expression of COMMD3 from GSE14520 dataset and 80 patients are both higher in tumor than that in normal tissue, and a higher level of COMMD3 mRNA is associated with shorter OS. Knockdown of COMMD3 inhibits human HCC cell lines proliferation in vitro. CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicates that COMMD3 is an independent prognostic biomarker for the survival of HCC patients. COMMD3 supports the proliferation of HCC cells and contributes to the poor OS in HCC patients.

RESUMEN

Collaborative filtering (CF) aims to make recommendations for users by detecting user's preference from the historical user-item interactions. Existing graph neural networks (GNN) based methods achieve satisfactory performance by exploiting the high-order connectivity between users and items, however they suffer from the poor training efficiency problem and easily introduce bias for information propagation. Moreover, the widely applied Bayesian personalized ranking (BPR) loss is insufficient to provide supervision signals for training due to the extremely sparse observed interactions. To deal with the above issues, we propose the Efficient Graph Collaborative Filtering (EGCF) method. Specifically, EGCF adopts merely one-layer graph convolution to model the collaborative signal for users and items from the first-order neighbors in the user-item interactions. Moreover, we introduce contrastive learning to enhance the representation learning of users and items by deriving the self-supervisions, which is jointly trained with the supervised learning. Extensive experiments are conducted on two benchmark datasets, i.e., Yelp2018 and Amazon-book, and the experimental results demonstrate that EGCF can achieve the state-of-the-art performance in terms of Recall and normalized discounted cumulative gain (NDCG), especially on ranking the target items at right positions. In addition, EGCF shows obvious advantages in the training efficiency compared with the competitive baselines, making it practicable for potential applications.

RESUMEN

Fact verification aims to verify the authenticity of a given claim based on the retrieved evidence from Wikipedia articles. Existing works mainly focus on enhancing the semantic representation of evidence, e.g., introducing the graph structure to model the evidence relation. However, previous methods can't well distinguish semantic-similar claims and evidences with distinct authenticity labels. In addition, the performances of graph-based models are limited by the over-smoothing problem of graph neural networks. To this end, we propose a graph-based contrastive learning method for fact verification abbreviated as CosG, which introduces a contrastive label-supervised task to help the encoder learn the discriminative representations for different-label claim-evidence pairs, as well as an unsupervised graph-contrast task, to alleviate the unique node features loss in the graph propagation. We conduct experiments on FEVER, a large benchmark dataset for fact verification. Experimental results show the superiority of our proposal against comparable baselines, especially for the claims that need multiple-evidences to verify. In addition, CosG presents better model robustness on the low-resource scenario.

RESUMEN

AIMS: Hetrombopag olamine is a novel small-molecule, nonpeptide thrombopoietin receptor agonist developed for immune thrombocytopenia treatment. This study aims to determine the safety and the effect of fasting duration after administration of hetrombopag on pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in Chinese healthy subjects. METHODS: A randomized, open-label, single-dose, 3-period crossover, self-control trial was conducted. 15 eligible subjects were enrolled and received hetrombopag 7.5 mg at day 1 of each period followed by a standard meal 4 hours postdose (treatment A/fasting condition), or a high-calorie, high-fat meal 1 hour postdose (treatment B), or a high-calorie, high-fat meal 2 hours postdose (treatment C). The plasma concentrations of hetrombopag were determined by validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, platelet counts were quantified by blood test. Analysis was performed using a mixed model, including treatment, period as fixed effects and participant as a random effect. RESULTS: Compared with treatment A, peak concentration and area under concentration-time curve extrapolated to infinity decreased by 56 and 74.6%, and 44 and 61% in treatments B and C, respectively. The mean platelet number on day 6 increased by 15.8, 6.96 and 10.26%, respectively, in treatments A, B and C in comparison with baseline platelet level. No severe adverse events happened in any of the 3 treatments. CONCLUSION: Hetrombopag was well tolerated in healthy male subjects under fasted/fed conditions. The shorter fasting duration resulted in lower hetrombopag exposure, corresponding to a lower level of platelet elevation. Therefore, we recommended oral administration of hetrombopag on an empty stomach (fasting condition) or at least 2 hours before a meal to achieve maximum bioavailability.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To develop a gastric cancer (GC) risk prediction rule as an initial prescreening tool to identify individuals with a high risk prior to gastroscopy. DESIGN: This was a nationwide multicentre cross-sectional study. Individuals aged 40-80 years who went to hospitals for a GC screening gastroscopy were recruited. Serum pepsinogen (PG) I, PG II, gastrin-17 (G-17) and anti-Helicobacter pylori IgG antibody concentrations were tested prior to endoscopy. Eligible participants (n=14 929) were randomly assigned into the derivation and validation cohorts, with a ratio of 2:1. Risk factors for GC were identified by univariate and multivariate analyses and an optimal prediction rule was then settled. RESULTS: The novel GC risk prediction rule comprised seven variables (age, sex, PG I/II ratio, G-17 level, H. pylori infection, pickled food and fried food), with scores ranging from 0 to 25. The observed prevalence rates of GC in the derivation cohort at low-risk (≤11), medium-risk (12-16) or high-risk (17-25) group were 1.2%, 4.4% and 12.3%, respectively (p<0.001).When gastroscopy was used for individuals with medium risk and high risk, 70.8% of total GC cases and 70.3% of early GC cases were detected. While endoscopy requirements could be reduced by 66.7% according to the low-risk proportion. The prediction rule owns a good discrimination, with an area under curve of 0.76, or calibration (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The developed and validated prediction rule showed good performance on identifying individuals at a higher risk in a Chinese high-risk population. Future studies are needed to validate its efficacy in a larger population.

RESUMEN

The maintenance of bone homeostasis requires tight coupling between bone-forming osteoblasts and bone-resorbing osteoclasts. However, the precise molecular mechanism(s) underlying the differentiation and activities of these specialized cells are still largely unknown. Here, we identify choline kinase ß (CHKB), a kinase involved in the biosynthesis of phosphatidylcholine, as a novel regulator of bone homeostasis. Choline kinase ß mutant mice (flp/flp) exhibit a systemic low bone mass phenotype. Consistently, osteoclast numbers and activity are elevated in flp/flp mice. Interestingly, osteoclasts derived from flp/flp mice exhibit reduced sensitivity to excessive levels of extracellular calcium, which could account for the increased bone resorption. Conversely, supplementation of cytidine 5'-diphosphocholine in vivo and in vitro, a regimen that bypasses CHKB deficiency, restores osteoclast numbers to physiological levels. Finally, we demonstrate that, in addition to modulating osteoclast formation and function, loss of CHKB corresponds with a reduction in bone formation by osteoblasts. Taken together, these data posit CHKB as a new modulator of bone homeostasis.

RESUMEN

Degeneration of the intervertebral disc (IVD) is a major chronic medical condition associated with back pain. To better understand the pathogenesis of IVD degeneration, we performed comparative and quantitative proteomic analyses of normal and degenerated human annulus fibrosus (AF) cells and identified proteins that are differentially expressed between them. Annulus fibrosus cells were isolated and cultured from patients with lumbar disc herniation (the experimental group, degenerated AF cells) and scoliosis patients who underwent orthopaedic surgery (the control group, normal AF cells). Comparative proteomic analyses of normal and degenerated cultured AF cells were carried out using 2-D electrophoresis, mass spectrometric analyses, and database searching. Quantitative analyses of silver-stained 2-D electrophoresis gels of normal and degenerated cultured AF cells identified 10 protein spots that showed the most altered differential expression levels between the two groups. Among these, three proteins were decreased, including heat shock cognate 71-kDa protein, glucose-6-phosphate 1-dehydrogenase, and protocadherin-23, whereas seven proteins were increased, including guanine nucleotide-binding protein G(i) subunit α-2, superoxide dismutase, transmembrane protein 51, adenosine receptor A3, 26S protease regulatory subunit 8, lipid phosphate phosphatase-related protein, and fatty acyl-crotonic acid reductase 1. These differentially expressed proteins might be involved in the pathophysiological process of IVD degeneration and have potential values as biomarkers of the degeneration of IVD.

RESUMEN

Osteolytic bone diseases are commonly presented with enhanced osteoclast formation and bone resorption. Sesquiterpene lactone natural compounds have been found to possess anti-inflammatory and immune-modulation effects. Here, we identified three germacrane sesquiterpenes using computer-based virtual screening for the structural similarity with sesquiterpene lactone, parthenolide. We showed that natural germacrane sesquiterpene compounds A, B, and C inhibit osteoclast formation and bone resorption in a dose-dependent manner, with relative potency compound A > compound C > compound B based on their equimolar concentrations. Mechanistic studies by Luciferase reporter gene assay and Western blot analysis showed that germacrane sesquiterpene compound A inhibits RANKL-induced activation of NF-κB and IκBα degradation. This study reveals that natural germacrane sesquiterpene compounds are inhibitors for osteoclast formation and bone resorption, and provides evidence that naturally-occurring compounds might be beneficial as alternative medicine for the prevention and treatment of osteolysis.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to summarize the efficacy and tolerability of rotigotine in the treatment of primary restless legs syndrome (RLS). PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) were searched for English-language randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that assessed the effectiveness of rotigotine for RLS. The pooled mean change from baseline in International RLS (IRLS) Study Group Rating Scalescore and relative risk (RR) of response based on the Clinical Global Impression-Improvement (CGI-I) scale score were applied to evaluate the outcomes. The pooled proportions of adverse events (AEs) were also estimated. Six RCTs were included. The meta-analysis showed a favorable effectiveness of rotigotine versus placebo on RLS [mean change on IRLS score: mean difference (MD)=-4.80; 95% confidence interval (CI): -5.90 to -3.70; P<0.00001 and RR of response on CGI-I was 2.19; 95% CI: 1.86 to 2.58, P<0.00001]. The most common AEs were application site reactions, nausea, headache and fatigue. In general, rotigotine was well-tolerated in patients with primary RLS. Based on the findings from the meta-analysis, rotigotine was more significantly efficacious in the treatment of RLS than placebo. Nevertheless, long-term studies and more evidence of comparisons of rotigotine with other dopamine agonists are needed.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the infection status of Anisakis simplex larvae in marine fishes for sale in Shantou. METHODS: Marine fishes were randomly collected from markets in Shantou City from February to December 2013, and then classified. The viscera and muscle of each fish were carefully dissected and thoroughly examined for anisakids. The larvae were examined under a light microscope. The infection rate and intensity of Anisakis simplex larvae were calculated. RESULTS: A total of 382 fish specimens belonging to 52 species were examined. 42 out of 52 species (80.8%) were found infected by A. simplex larvae. The overall infection rate reached 47.4% (181/382), and average 5.5 larvae parasitized per infected fish (995/181). The survival rate of larvae was 100%. The highest infection rate observed was 100% in Scomber australasicus (4/4), Trachurus japonicus (9/9), Decapterus maruadsi (8/8), Lutjanus lutjanus (9/9), Argyrosomus argentatus (4/4), Nibea albiflora (4/4), Nemipterus bathybius (12/12), Trachinocephalus myops (7/7) and Mene maculata (9/9), followed by 16/18 in Pneumatophorus japonicus, 6/7 in Lutjanus ophuysenii and 5/6 in Lutjanus fulvus. A. simplex larvae were not detected in 10 fish species, namely, Megalaspis cordyla, Lutjanus argentimaculatus, Lutjanus fulviflamma, Acanthopagrus australis, Acanthopagrus latus, Plectorhinchus nigrus, Dentex tumifrons, Psenopsis anomala, Scatophagus argus, and Seriola lalandi. The infection intensity was the highest in Lutjanus fulvus (21.0 per fish), followed by Trachinocephalus myops (16.7 per fish), Saurida filamentosa (14.0 per fish) and Mene maculate (10.1 per fish). The lowest infection intensity was found in Rastrelliger kanagurta, Kaiwarinus equula, Atule mate, Lutjanus russellii, Plectorhinchus cinctus, Priacanthus tayenus, Branchiostegus argentatus, Branchiostegus albus, Sphyraena pinguis, Formio niger, Trachinotus blochii, Siganus fuscescens and Choerodon azurio (less than 2 per fish). The highest infection rate (34.3%, 131/382) was found in the mesentery. The infection intensity was highest in pyloric appendage (3.5 per fish). A. simplex larvae were not found in muscle. The highest infection rate (60.2%, 74/123) was found in fishes with body weight of 100-200 g. The infection intensity was highest in fish with body weight of 301-400 g (7.8 per fish). CONCLUSION: The infection rate of A. simplex larvae is high in marine fishes from Shantou markets.
