RESUMEN

The present work demonstrates a novel strategy of synthesizing iron-biochar (Fe@BCSB) composite made with the waste iron bottle cap and sugar cane bagasse for implementation in the three-dimensional electro-Fenton (3DEF) process. The catalytic ability of the Fe@BCSB composite was explored to remediate the sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) surfactant from wastewater at neutral pH. At the optimum operating condition of Fe@BCSB dose of 1.0 g L-1, current density of 4.66 mA cm-2, and Na2SO4 dose of 50 mM, nearly 92.7 ± 3.1% of 20 mg L-1 of SDS abatement was attained during 120 min of electrolysis time. Moreover, the Fe@BCSB showed significant recyclability up to six cycles. Besides, other organics were successfully treated with more than 85% abatement efficiency in the proposed Fe@BCSB-supported 3DEF process. The total operating cost obtained during SDS treatment was around 0.31 US$ m-3 of wastewater. The phytotoxicity test revealed the positive impact of the 3DEF-treated effluent on the germination of the Vigna radiata. The electron paramagnetic resonance conveyed •OH as the prevailing reactive species for the oxidation of SDS in the 3DEF process. Further, about 81.3 ± 3.8% of SDS and 53.7 ± 4.1% of mineralization efficacy were acquired from the real institutional sewage.

RESUMEN

A batch-scale electro-Fenton (EF) process was performed using graphite anode and waste battery-based Fe -Mn -Zn/C electrocatalyst coated on low-cost graphite felt cathode. The effectiveness of the EF's performance was evident with around 83.9 + 4.1% removal of 20 mg/L of sodium-dodecyl sulfate surfactant (SDS) at an optimum current density (CD) of 5.0 mA/cm2, Na2SO4 of 0.05 M, initial pH of 7.2, and electrolysis time of 180 min. Moreover, nearly 1.78-fold more removal of SDS was achieved in EF than in the electro-oxidation process operated without any catalyst. The operating cost of 0.35 $ of per m3 per order was needed to treat SDS wastewater. The remediation of SDS follows pseudo-first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 0.0095 min-1. Additionally, 90.3 + 2.1% of SDS and 57 + 2.6% of total organic carbon (TOC) removal was attained during 240 min of treatment time in secondary treated real wastewater; hence, additional 60 min of treatment time is required for effectively treating real wastewater than synthetic wastewater. Thus, EF is effective with battery waste-derived magnetic catalyst for treating wastewater containing SDS, which can lead to achieving sustainable environmental goals.

RESUMEN

Water quality modelling has proved to be effective method for managing river water quality. But the most effective and comprehensive approach involving integration of river water quality simulation and pollution visualization with the objective of pollution reduction and maintenance of environmental flow strategies has gained less attention. Thus, the objective of this study was to employ an integrated approach for mapping and analysing river water quality under various hydro-climatic and pollution scenarios. Specifically, this approach involved the integration of a river water quality simulation model, QUAL2K, Global Environmental Flow Calculator (GEFC), and Geographical Information System (GIS) to develop water quality index (WQI) based map charts of water quality. The calibrated QUAL2K model was utilized to simulate WQI parameters including water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), nitrates (NO3), ammonia (NH4), and alkalinity. To analyse the WQI, the Weighted Arithmetic-Water Quality Index (WA-WQI) method was employed for various individual and combined pollution scenarios, environmental flow (Eflow), and climate change scenarios. The developed integrated approach was applied to the Bhadravati segment of Bhadra River, India. The findings revealed that the prevailing WQI status of the study stretch ranged from poor to unsuitable for drinking purposes. This deterioration can be attributed to the impact of both industrial and municipal effluents. By maintaining the effective Environmental Management Class (EMC) flow rates (class C flowrate of EMC (40.32 m3/s)) in conjunction with appropriate Pollution Reduction (PR) level (10% PR) at headwater and incoming drains, the stream self-purification capacity was enhanced resulting in the Bhadravati River stretch water quality transitioning to favourable water quality condition.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Our previous research revealed the relative local aggressiveness of eyelid and periocular squamous cell carcinoma (EPSCC), but its distinct genetic characteristics involved remain unknown. OBJECTIVES: We conducted this study based on next-generation sequencing to identify the genetic distinctiveness of EPSCC and damaging mutations for possible aetiology and poor prognosis. METHODS: We performed sequencing using a 556-gene panel (SmartOnco) in 48 EPSCCs. Cox hazards model was applied to explore mutated genes that increase the risk of metastasis and death. Pathogenesis of the mutations was predicted by sequence alignment algorithms. RESULTS: The most commonly mutated genes were KMT2C (N = 17, 35%), LRP1B (N = 14, 29%), KMT2D (N = 12, 25%), PTCH1 (N = 10, 21%) and TP53 (N = 10, 21%). DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes (42%) like MSH6 (19%) and MLH3 (12%) were among the most frequently mutated genes. Cell cycle regulators including TP53 (21%) and CDKN2A (10%) were less frequently mutated than in other squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs). Ultraviolet exposure, MMR deficiency and ageing were the main aetiology. Of note, KMT2C has a deleterious mutation hotspot. Patients burdened with MSH6 mutation has a higher risk of overall metastasis (P = 0.045, HR = 5.165) and nodal metastasis (P = 0.022, HR = 14.038). Moreover, a hotspot mutation MSH6E52A brought an even higher risk of nodal metastasis (P = 0.011, HR = 18.745). CONCLUSIONS: EPSCCs displayed a unique mutation profile from cutaneous SCCs and mucosal SCCs. We have identified novel damaging mutations in epigenetic regulators like KMT2C boosted early onset of EPSCCs in addition to UVR, ageing or MMR deficiency. And malfunction of MMR genes worsened prognosis.

RESUMEN

Nitrogen and phosphorous are indispensable for growth and vitality of living beings, hence termed as nutrients. However, discharge of nutrient rich waste streams to aquatic ecosystems results in eutrophication. Therefore, nutrient removal from wastewater is crucial to meet the strict nutrient discharge standards. Similarly, nutrient recovery from waste streams is vital for the realization of a circular economy by avoiding the depletion of finite resources. This manuscript presents analysis of existing information on different conventional as well as advanced treatment technologies that are commonly practiced for the removal of nutrient from domestic wastewater. First, the information pertaining to the biological nutrient removal technologies are discussed. Second, onsite passive nutrient removal technologies are reviewed comprehensively. Third, advanced nutrient removal technologies are summarized briefly. The mechanisms, advantages, and disadvantages of these technologies along with their efficiencies and limitations are discussed. An integrated approach for simultaneous nutrient removal and recovery is recommended. The fifth section of the review highlights bottlenecks and potential solutions for successful implementation of the nutrient removal technologies. It is anticipated that the review will offer an instructive overview of the progress in nutrient removal and recovery technologies and will illustrate necessity of further investigations for development of efficient nutrient removal and recovery processes.

RESUMEN

Bacillus species are widely recognized as good industrial platform strains, which can produce a variety of valuable products including enzymes and functional proteins. Bacillus expression systems gain various competitive edges over other expression systems, with respect to nontoxicity, convenience for gene modification and high yield of target proteins. Recently, a number of Bacillus expression systems have been developed, and various strategies were conducted to improve the yields of target proteins. In this review, we focused on the strategies of host strain optimization for heterologous protein production, including secretion pathway optimization, RNA and protein stability enhancement, cell growth facilitation, genome streamlining and transcriptional regulator engineering. In addition, Bacillus spore surface display and food-grade expression systems were developed to expand the application of Bacillus expression system in recent years. Finally, the challenges and prospects of Bacillus expression system were discussed regarding the recent progresses, challenges and trends in this field.

RESUMEN

Neonatal respiratory distress is a major mortality factor in cloned animals; however, the pathogenesis of this disease has rarely been investigated. Previous studies have shown that miRNAs regulate critical genes related to lung development, cell differentiation, surfactant synthesis, secretion and lung disease. This study aimed to examine differentially expressed miRNAs in collapsed lungs of cloned bovine neonates and normal lungs in order to identify key pathways and functions that might be related to the pathogenesis of neonatal respiratory distress. In this study, miRNA transcriptomes of collapsed lungs of neonatal cloned bovines and normal lungs were analysed by next-generation sequencing and the results were validated using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). A total of 177 differentially expressed miRNAs were identified in the two groups (fold change > 2, RPM ≥ 5), some of which were associated with type II cell differentiation, for example, mmu-miR-29a-5p_L-2R+1, hsa-miR-200c-5p_L-1R+1 and mmu-miR-18a-3p_R+1. The differentially expressed miRNAs were predicted to 6,031 target genes. By Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopeida of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) DATA base, 133 significant GO terms (p < .05) and 13 significant KEGG pathways (p < .05) were obtained. Many of them were associated with lung development and surfactant homoeostasis, such as lipid biosynthetic processes, protein transport, endocytosis, lysosome, endosome, Golgi apparatus and membrane. Our results of miRNAs express profiles may partially explain the respiratory distress and lung collapse in neonatal bovine clones and could provide novel insights into roles of miRNAs in regulation of lung collapse and neonatal respiratory distress in cloned farm animals.

RESUMEN

In the current study, sequential nitrification and anoxic experiments in synthetic municipal wastewater were exposed to 0.5 to 100 mg/L of chlortetracycline for 24 h to evaluate acute impact on the nitrification, and denitrification processes of biological treatment. Both processes were significantly (p < 0.05) inhibited at >50 mg/L of chlortetracycline, and the results revealed that nitrification was adversely affected by chlortetracycline compared with the anoxic process. In nitrification, chemical oxygen removal (COD) and ammonia oxidation kinetics were 50% inhibited at 10 mg chlortetracycline/L, and nitrite oxidation kinetics at 0.5 mg chlortetracycline/L. Likewise, in the anoxic process, 14 and 10 mg/L of chlortetracycline inhibited 50% of COD removal and nitrate reduction kinetics, respectively. In nitrification and denitrification, 90% of chlortetracycline was removed by adsorbing onto sludge suspended solids. In addition, a higher chlortetracycline concentration in anoxic effluent, compared with aerobic effluents, indicated a dissimilarity in the composition of sludge solids, pH, and biomass production for both processes.

RESUMEN

A field study was carried out to investigate the sediment in-situ bioremediation by adding microbial activated beads. In this work, Calcium carbonate, silicon dioxide, activated carbon powder, attapulgite powder, sodium alginate, microbial liquid and polyvinyl alcohol were utilized to make the immobilized microbial activated beads. Field experiment results showed that the removal rate of NH4+-N, TN and COD in overlying water reached about 61.8%, 87.5% and 87.1%, respectively. The initial concentration of NH4+-N, TN and COD was 159 mg/L, 6.24 mg/L and 7.28 mg/L, whereas and the final concentration was 58 mg/L, 0.78 mg/L and 0.94 mg/L when water temperature, DO, pH and C/N ratio were 25-30 °C, 2-3 mg/L, 7.0-8.0 and 10-15, respectively. Moreover, under optimal temperature condition (25-30 °C), the removal rate of TOC, TN, heterotrophic bacteria and sulfur bacteria in the river sediment reached to 46.5%, 50.7%, 39.2% and 73.2%, respectively.

RESUMEN

A compact all-in-line graphene-based distributed feedback Bragg-grating fiber laser (GDFB-FL) with narrow linewidth of hundreds kHz is demonstrated and investigated in this study. Performing as an optical saturable absorber, graphene oscillates the initially kHz linewidth DFB-FL, and generates high-quality passively Q-switched pulses. Pumped with a 980 nm continuous-wave laser, the Q-switched GDFB-FL observes ~1 µs pulse durations, with pulse energies up to ~10 nJ and approaching the transform limit. The peak power is ~600 times higher than the original DFB-FL laser. By optimizing the cavity design and the graphene material, it is predicted that fast Q-switched pulses with more than MHz repetition rates and sub-100 ns pulse durations are achievable. Such transform-limited Q-switched GDFB-FLs with narrow linewidth of sub-MHz have long coherence length, good tunability, stability, compactness and robustness, with potential impact in optical coherent communications, metrology and sensing.

RESUMEN

KEY MESSAGE: A new epicuticular wax (bloom) locus has been identified and fine mapped to the 207.89 kb genomic region on chromosome 1. A putative candidate gene, Sobic.001G269200, annotated as GDSL-like lipase/acylhydrolase, is proposed as the most probable candidate gene involved in bloom synthesis/deposition. Deposition of epicuticular wax on plant aerial surface is one strategy that plants adapt to reduce non-transpiration water loss. Epicuticular wax (bloom)-less mutants in sorghum with their glossy phenotypes exhibit changes in the accumulation of epicuticular wax on leaf and culm surfaces. We report molecular mapping of a new sorghum locus, bloomless mutant (bm39), involved in epicuticular wax biosynthesis in sorghum. Inheritance studies involving a profusely bloom parent (BTx623) and a spontaneous bloomless mutant (RS647) indicated that the parents differed in a single gene for bloom synthesis. Bloomless was recessive to bloom deposition. Genetic mapping involving F2 and F7 mapping populations in diverse genetic backgrounds (BTx623 × RS647; 296A × RS647 and 27A × RS647) identified and validated the map location of bm39 to a region of 207.89 kb on chromosome 1. SSR markers, Sblm13 and Sblm16, flanked the bm39 locus to a map interval of 0.3 cM on either side. Nine candidate genes were identified, of which Sobic.001G269200 annotated for GDSL-like lipase/acylhydrolase is the most likely gene associated with epicuticular wax deposition. Gene expression analysis in parents, isogenic lines and sets of near isogenic lines also confirmed the reduced expression of the putative candidate gene. The study opens possibilities for a detailed molecular analysis of the gene, its role in epicuticular wax synthesis and deposition, and may help to understand its function in moisture stress tolerance and insect and pathogen resistance in sorghum.

RESUMEN

A novel strategy has been developed for the synthesis of chromeno[3,4-b]pyrrol-4(3H)-one and substituted pyrrole derivatives through 1,5-electrocyclization of conjugated azomethine ylides. This is the first example of the preparation of highly substituted pyrrole derivatives from chromene-3-carboxaldehydes (non-enolizable aldehydes) and N-alkyl amino acids/esters. This method is simple and applicable to a diverse range of substrates.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The industrially produced partially hydrogenated vegetable fat (PHVF) contains trans fatty acid mostly comprising of elaidic acid (18:1 ∆9t). PHVF is used as a cooking medium in Southeast Asian countries. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of dietary PHVF on inflammatory mediators and possible ameliorative effects of n-3 fatty acid (α-linolenic acid, ALA)-rich linseed oil (LSO) on the inflammatory mediators. METHODS: Male Wistar weaning rats were fed AIN-93-purified diet supplemented with one of the following lipids for 60 days, groundnut oil (GNO, 10 wt%), PHVF (10 wt%), LSO (10 wt%), PHVF blended with LSO at 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 wt% levels. The final fat level in the diet was maintained at 10 wt%. RESULTS: The macrophages from rats fed PHVF showed higher levels of total cholesterol and free cholesterol as compared to those from rats fed GNO and LSO. Macrophages from rats fed PHVF down-regulated the expression of PPARγ and up-regulated the expressions of cytosolic phospholipase A2, cyclooxygenase-2, 5-lipoxygenase and nuclear factor-kappa B p65. The macrophages from rats fed PHVF secreted higher levels of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids and cytokines. The rats fed PHVF blended with LSO at incremental amounts showed a significant reduction in the expressions of pro-inflammatory markers in dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSION: Detrimental effects of dietary PHVF in enhancing pro-inflammatory agents in rats could be significantly reduced by providing ALA (n-3 PUFA)-rich LSO.

RESUMEN

Oleaginous yeast Trichosporon oleaginosus was studied for lipid production using municipal sludge with or without fortification of crude glycerol in a 15-L fermenter. The maximum lipid content (concentration) was 32.0% w/w (9.35 g/L), 33.6% (10.13 g/L), 33.3% (9.13 g/L), and 33.1% (9.03 g/L) w/w with the addition of 25, 50, 100, and 150 g/L glycerol, respectively. Glycerol concentration had little effect on lipid accumulation. However, glycerol concentration substantially affected increase of biomass concentration and cell count. The suitable glycerol concentration was approximately 40 g/L for Trichosporon oleaginosus growing in sludge medium with initial suspended solids (SS) concentration 30 g/L. Addition of nitrogen to sludge-glycerol medium enhanced lipid and biomass concentration. The energy conversion efficiency was 1.78, 1.55, and 1.71 with no nitrogen added, with addition of 1 g/L urea, and 3.7 g/L peptone, respectively. The biodiesel production cost was estimated nearly 0.75 US$/L.

RESUMEN

The goal of this study was to establish a modeling tool for river water quality with a direct linkage to the water quality index (WQI5) calculation and the river water quality model, the Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP), for pollutant transport modeling. The integrated WASP and WQI5 tool was field-tested to assess pollutant loadings and their impacts on river environment. Suspended solid (SS) and electric conductivity (EC) correlation equations and the WQI5 calculation tool were included in the water quality model and direct WQI5 calculation. The SS concentration, which was influenced by river flows, had crucial effects on river water quality and WQI5 values. EC value was controlled by dissolution of soil minerals, which was affected by the watershed drainage area and surface runoff. The integrated system could establish a direct correlation for river water quality, river flow, and WQI5.

RESUMEN

Objective: To observe the intraoperative influences on pharmacodynamics of rocuronium in children inhaling sevoflurane and desflurane for 40 min balance. Methods: Ninety children (ASAⅠ-Ⅱ) undergoing elective surgery with general anesthesia in Second Affiliated Hospital & Yuying Children's Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University from July 2015 to May 2016 were randomly assigned into six groups (n=15): Sevoflurane group (group S1 and S2), Desflurane group (group D1 and D2) and Propofol group (group P1 and P2). Children in group D1, S1 and P1 were allocated to research the dose-effect relationship of rocuronium, children in group D2, S2 and P2 were allocated to research the time-effect relationship of rocuronium. TOF-Watch SX monitor was used to exert a train-of-four stimulation (TOF) at ulnar nerve in wrist, then the adductor pollicis muscle appeared muscle twitch 4 times in turn which was recorded T(1, )T(2, )T(3) and T(4) respectively. After the success of the muscle relaxant calibration, 1.3 MAC sevoflurane and desflurane were inhaled and maintained for 40 min respectively in children in Sevoflurane group (group S1 and S2) and Desflurane group (group D1 and D2), Plasma target controlled infusion of 3.5-4.0 µg/ml propofol was always administered in Propofol group (group P1 and P2). 75 µg/kg rocuronium was injected each time in group S1, D1 and P1 respectively. Maximum inhibited effect of T(1) was recorded after every injection until inhibition of T(1) more than 95% eventually. The method of cumulative dose four times was used to calculate the efficiency curve of rocuronium[median effective dose (ED(50)), 90% effective dose (ED(90)) and 95% effective dose (ED(95))]. 0.6 mg/kg rocuronium was injected respectively through vein in group S2, D2 and P2. The recovery times of muscle relaxant were recorded which including time of T(1) disappeared (onset time), T(1) from 0% to 5% (peak effect time), T(1) from 0% to 25% (clinical effect time), T(1) from 25% to 75% (recovery index), T(1) from 0% to 70% (internal effect time), T(4)/T(1) (TOFr) from 0% to 70% and 90%. Results: ED(50, )ED(90) and ED(95) in group D1 were 128.73, 212.45 and 245.78 µg/kg respectively. ED(50, )ED(90) and ED(95) in group S1 were 132.46, 218.94 and 252.30 µg/kg respectively. ED(50, )ED(90) and ED(95) in group P1 were 230.56, 381.02 and 439.55 µg/kg respectively. ED(50, )ED(90) and ED(95) in group D1 and S1 were significantly lower than those in group P1 (all P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between D1 and S1 group (P>0.05). Compared with group P2, the shorter onset time, the longer peak effect time and clinical effect time was observed in group D2 and S2, the longer recovery index, internal effect time and TOFr from 0% to 70% and 90% was observed in group S2 (all P<0.01). Conclusions: 1.3 MAC sevoflurane and desflurane inhaling for 40 min significantly reduces ED(50) and ED(95) of rocuronium, prolongs the onset time and action time of rocuronium in children. Sevoflurane can significantly prolong the recovery characteristics of rocuronium.

RESUMEN

Ricebran oil (RBO) is promoted as heart friendly oil because of its ability to maintain serum lipids at desirable levels. Inflammation also plays an important role on cardiovascular health. The role of minor constituents present in unsaponifiable fraction (UF) of RBO on inflammatory markers is not well understood. To evaluate this, we have taken RBO with UF (RBO-N), RBO stripped of UF (RBO-MCR) and RBO-MCR supplemented with UF from RBO (UFRBO) or Gamma-Oryzanol (γ-ORY) were added in AIN-93 diets which was then fed to Wistar rats for a period of 60 days. Groundnut oil with UF (GNO-N), UF removed GNO (GNO-MCR) and GNO-MCR supplemented with UF from RBO or γ-ORY was also used for comparison. The peritoneal macrophages from the rats were activated and pro-inflammatory mediators such as Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), eicosanoids, cytokines, hydrolytic enzymes of lysosomal origin were monitored. The results indicated that UF of RBO and γ-ORY supplemented in the dietary oils play a significant role in reducing the secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators by macrophages. Hence γ-ORY in RBO significantly contributed to the anti-inflammatory properties of RBO.
