In their paper, Klaassen et al. present their findings on the revised Kids ITP Tools (KIT). This important work provides an update to the validated measure for evaluating health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). ITP, an acquired autoimmune disorder, results in thrombocytopenia and places children at risk for significant bleeding. Thankfully, the majority of children with ITP will have a brief disease course and no or mild bleeding symptoms. The rarity of severe bleeding events or the development of chronic disease provides a challenge with regard to clinical trial design, making alternative measures of pharmacological efficacy extremely important. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the extent of extraskeletal manifestations along with inpatient outcomes and complications associated with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). STUDY DESIGN: This cross-sectional study utilized the Kids' Inpatient Database as a part of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project to investigate inpatient hospital outcomes and management in patients with OI from 1997 through 2016. Data regarding hospital characteristics, cost of treatment, inpatient outcomes, and procedures were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: There were 7291 admissions that listed OI as a diagnosis in the Kids' Inpatient Database from 1997 through 2016. Unexpectedly, more than one-third of all admissions in these children with OI presented with an extraskeletal manifestation. The rate of major complications was 3.85%. The rate of minor complications was 19.4%, most commonly respiratory problems. The mortality rate was 18.2% in the neonatal period and 1.0% in all other admissions. Total charges of hospital stay increased over the years. CONCLUSIONS: We identified a striking prevalence of extraskeletal manifestations in OI along with inpatient outcomes and complications associated with OI, of which respiratory complications were predominant. We observed a significant financial burden for patients with OI and identified additional risks for financial crisis, in addition to disparities in care identified among socioeconomic groups. These data contribute to a more holistic understanding of OI from diagnosis to management.

OBJECTIVES: To describe changes in home food availability during early childhood, including modified, developmentally sensitive obesogenic scores, and to determine whether home food availability is associated with food and nutrient intakes of children concurrently, over time. DESIGN: Data were drawn from the STRONG Kids 2 longitudinal, birth cohort to achieve the study objectives. Home food availability was assessed with the Home Food Inventory (HFI) and included fifteen food groups (e.g. fruit and vegetables) and three obesogenic scores (one original and two modified). Food and nutrient intakes were measured using the Block FFQ and included twenty-seven food groups and eighteen nutrients (e.g. vitamins A and C, protein). HFI and FFQ were completed by trained researchers or mothers, respectively, at 24, 36 and 48 months. Repeated-measures ANOVA and Spearman's correlations were used to achieve the study objectives. SETTING: Central Illinois, USA. PARTICIPANTS: Participants were 468 children at 24, 36 and 48 months of age. RESULTS: Availability of less nutritious foods and obesogenic foods and beverages increased as children aged, and availability of both nutritious and less nutritious foods were associated with child food and nutrient intake. The three obesogenic scores demonstrated similar, positive associations with the intake of energy, saturated fat, added sugars and kilocalories from sweets. CONCLUSION: These findings offer novel insight into changes in home food availability and associations with food and nutrient intake during early childhood. Additional attention is needed examining antecedents (e.g. built environments, purchasing behaviours) and consequences (e.g. child diet quality and weight) of home food availability.

Children's emergent literacy skills are essential for the development of later literacy abilities and school success. However, children with migration background often show poorer language skills in the majority language and are at a greater risk of developing literacy deficits. In addition, there is evidence for the predictive role of emergent literacy skills in reading comprehension, but there has been relatively little research concerning the association between preschool emergent literacy skills and word reading and spelling in Germany, especially for children with migration background. This study examines the associations of emergent literacy skills (vocabulary, phonological awareness [PA], letter knowledge, and rapid naming) with word reading and spelling from kindergarten to the end of Grade 2 and evaluates the role of migration background (i.e., use of the majority or minority language at home) in these associations. Data from 187 preschool children were obtained before school entry (Mage = 63.58 months, SD = 4.45). The results show that vocabulary and letter knowledge were strong predictors of word reading, whereas letter knowledge and PA were significant predictors of spelling. Furthermore, children's migration background was negatively associated with preschool vocabulary and PA. For children with migration background, vocabulary was a significant predictor of word reading, whereas letter knowledge was the best predictor of word reading for children without migration background. The results reflect the complexity of language development and the relevance of emergent literacy skills as predictors for word reading and spelling. Specific interventions should be developed to promote children's literacy abilities.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate drug prescribing in the pediatric population is challenging, given this age group's unique pharmacokinetics. This has inevitably led to a high incidence of adverse drug reactions in this population. To address this issue, the Pediatric Pharmacy Association (PPA) compiled a list of 67 drugs that are inappropriately used in the pediatric population called the Key Potentially Inappropriate Drugs "KIDs list". AIM: To estimate the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) use in pediatric wards based on the KIDs list criteria. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted and included pediatric patients who were admitted to five pediatric wards during 3 years (2019-2021). The drugs in the KIDs list were matched to the hospital formulary and 11 matched drugs were included in the study. For each individual drug, the patient's electronic file was reviewed to determine the prescription appropriateness according to the KIDs list criteria. RESULTS: Among 3,166 pediatric patients admitted to pediatric wards, a total of 415 patients received a PIM listed in the KIDs list. The mean age was 8.6 (± 4.9) years old, and 60.0% (n = 251/415) were males. The overall prevalence of PIM use was 13.0% (n = 415/3166). Among the prescribed PIM, metoclopramide was the most commonly prescribed PIM 42.8% (n = 178/415), followed by tramadol 37.6% (n = 156/415). CONCLUSION: Given the high prevalence of inappropriate medication use in the pediatric wards, future research on strategies and interventions should be recommended to limit the use of PIMs and provide safer alternatives for the pediatric population.

Colostrum replacement products for use in goat kids are sourced from bovine colostrum and often used by producers to supplement or replace maternal colostrum to prevent infections. To compare the colostrum replacement products fed on-farm to caprine colostrum a cross-sectional study was undertaken. Ontario dairy goat producers were asked to collect first milking colostrum from their goats and samples of the reconstituted commercial replacement product currently in use. The frozen samples were thawed and submitted for testing of fat, protein and lactose content, IgG1 concentration and aerobic bacterial culture. Compared with caprine colostrum, the reconstituted replacement products were lower in protein (11.7%; P = 0.0007), and fat (4.6%; P < 0.0001) and higher in lactose (5.4%; P < 0.0001) on average. The average IgG1 concentration in goat colostrum (53.5 g/L; range: 16.6-1985.8) was significantly higher than in colostrum replacement products (33.7 g/L; range: 10.7-55.3) (P < 0.0001). The Brix cut-point for good quality goat colostrum (50 g/L) was calculated at 23% (sensitivity = 69.6%, specificity = 88.0%) for goat colostrum and 26% for the colostrum replacement product (sensitivity = 87.5%, specificity = 100%). The average aerobic count for goat colostrum was lower (2.95 log10 cfu/mL) than the colostrum replacement product samples that were cultured (3.85 log10 cfu/mL; P < 0.0001). Further investigation into colostrum replacement products, including on-farm storage of opened powdered product and mixing and storage of reconstituted product, is warranted. Variability in the levels of IgG1, aerobic bacterial growth and fat, protein and lactose content in colostrum replacement products also requires further exploration to determine their effects on kid health.

Enhancing gastrointestinal health, immunity, and digestion are key factors to support dairy goat kid performance. Several additives have been studied in relation to these actions. This study investigated the impact of mannan-rich fraction (MRF) inclusion in goat milk on the growth performance, gut health, rumen fermentation and microbial profiles of Xinong Saanen dairy goat kids. Eighty kids aged 14 d and 4.72 ± 0.33 kg body weight (BW) were randomly assigned into 2 groups: Control and MRF (1g/d MRF mixed into milk), each group consisted of 40 kids with 10 kids per pen. All kids were given milk individually and fed starter diet by pen, with the trial lasting 10 weeks. BW and blood samples were collected on the 7th day at 2, 6, 10 and 12 weeks of age, and feed intake was determined daily. From the 1st to 7th day at 12 weeks of age, fecal samples were collected on 4 kids from each group to analyze nutrient digestibility. On the 7th day of 12 weeks of age, 4 kids from each group were slaughtered for evaluation of rumen fermentation, rumen microbiota and gut morphology. The results indicated that MRF supplementation led to greater overall BW (P < 0.01), overall starter dry matter intake (DMI) (P < 0.01) and overall average daily gain (ADG) (P = 0.021), while showing lower overall diarrhea rate (P < 0.01). However, no difference in overall feed efficiency (FE) (P = 0.063) and apparent digestibility of nutrients was observed (P > 0.05). Furthermore, MRF supplementation resulted in increased ileal villus height (P = 0.05), and higher RNA expression of Claudin-1 and Occuldin in the duodenum (P < 0.05), ZO-1, JAM-2, and Occuldin in the jejunum (P < 0.05), and Claudin-1, JAM-2, and Occuldin in the ileum (P < 0.05). Additionally, the concentrations of overall IgA, overall IgM and overall IgG were higher in the MRF group (P < 0.01). The concentrations of ruminal acetate and total volatile fatty acid (TVFA) were higher with MRF supplementation (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, supplementation with MRF resulted in higher abundance of Bacteroidetes and Succinivibrio, but lower abundance of Firmicutes and Succiniclasticum in the rumen. In conclusion, growth performance, gut health, immunity, and ruminal microbial structure of dairy goat kids benefited from MRF supplementation.

We aimed to evaluate performance, body development, metabolism, and expression of genes related to skeletal muscle hypertrophy in non-castrated male dairy kids fed with different levels of MR during the pre-weaning period. Sixty newborn male kids, not castrated, from Saanen and Swiss Alpine breeds, with an average body weight (BW) of 3.834 ± 0.612 kg, were distributed in a randomized block design. Breeds were the block factor in the model (random effect). Kids were allocated into 2 nutrition plans (n = 30 kids per treatment) categorized as follows: low nutritional plan (LNP; 1L MR/kid/day) or high nutritional plan (HNP; 2L MR/kid/day). All kids were harvested at 45 d of life. The majority of nitrogen balance variables were affected by the nutritional plan (P < 0.050). Morphometric measures and body condition score (2.99 - LNP vs. 3.28 - HNP) were affected by nutritional plan (P < 0.050), except hip height, thoracic depth and hip width. The nutritional plan affected the body components (P < 0.050), except esophagus and trachea. Animal performance and carcass traits were influenced by nutritional plan (P < 0.050), except carcass dressing (48.56% on average). Nutritional plan affected (P < 0.050) some blood profile variables as the total cholesterol (141.35 vs. 113.25 mg/dL), triglycerides (60.53 vs. 89.05 mg/dL), LDL (79.76 vs. 33.66 g/mL) and IGF-1 (17.77 vs. 38.55 ng/mL) for LNP and HNP respectively. Hypertrophy was greater in HNP than LNP animals (P < 0.050), being represented by the proportion of sarcoplasm (39.76 vs. 31.99%). LNP had a greater mTOR abundance than HNP (P = 0.045), but AMPK was not affected by the nutritional plan. Our findings show that a higher milk replacer allowance enhances animal performance, body development, metabolic parameters, and cellular hypertrophy in pre-weaned dairy kids.

INTRODUCTION: In children and adolescents, brain and central nervous system (CNS) tumors are the leading types of cancers. Past studies have found differing rates of intracranial cancers among races and identified additional cancer risk factors. This study aimed to see if these differences can be substantiated with further investigation of the latest version (2019) of the Kids' Inpatient Database (KID). METHODS: A total of 7,818 pediatric patients <21 years old in KID with ICD-10 codes consisting of malignant neoplasms of the brain, brainstem, and cerebral meninges (C700, C709-C719) were queried. Modifiable risk factors evaluated include: hospital region, insurance type, hospital city size, the average income of patient zip code, and location/teaching status of a hospital. Non-modifiable risk factors were race and sex at birth. Dependent variables were tested in Excel and GraphPad Prism 9 using a χ2 test with Yates' continuity correction and Tukey's one-way and two-way ANOVAs. RESULTS: Mortality rates of females (2.88%) compared to males (1.99%) were significant (p < 0.05). Mortality was (4.17%) in black patients compared to (1.68%) for white (p < 0.0001), Hispanic mortality (2.95%) compared to white (p < 0.01), and mortality of Asian/Pacific Islander (3.86%) compared to white (p < 0.01). Black patients had significantly higher mortality than white, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, Native American, and other races overall (p < 0.01). There was no significant difference in the mortality rates between children's hospitals and large hospitals for any race. After accounting for patient race, mortality was still not significantly different for patients with Medicaid insurance compared to non-Medicaid insurance types. Of the children treated at children's hospitals, the most transferred in from outside hospitals were Native American (20.00%) followed by Asian/Pacific Islander (15.09%) then Hispanic patients (13.67%). A significant difference between races was also seen regarding length of stay (p < 0.001) and number of charges (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: These findings confirm prior studies suggesting gender and race are significant factors in mortality rates for children with intracranial neoplasms. However, the findings do not identify the root causes of these discrepancies but may serve as an impetus for clinicians, healthcare administrators, and governmental leaders to improve national resource allocation to better care for pediatric patients with intracranial neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Little research has been conducted to evaluate the correlation between impulse oscillometry (IOS), Childhood Asthma Control Test (C-ACT), and Test for Respiratory and Asthma Control in Kids (TRACK). METHODS: This study was conducted at China Medical University Hospital between September 1, 2019, and March 31, 2021. Children aged 2-6 years who had been diagnosed with asthma with acute exacerbation were enrolled and followed-up until the end of the study. Correlations between the parameters of IOS, C-ACT and TRACK were assessed. The validity and reliability of TRACK were verified. RESULTS: A total of 114 children with asthma and acute exacerbations were recruited. Their mean age was 4.1 ± 1.1 years, and 60.5% were males. After a year of treatment, the change of R5-R20 from baseline 0.64 ± 0.38 kPa/L/s to 12th month 0.48 ± 0.2 kPa/L/s (p = 0.022). TRACK and C-ACT scores were significantly correlated during the observation period. R5-R20 in IOS at baseline and at the 12th month of follow-up as well as the change in IOS parameters were significantly associated with C-ACT (p = 0.003, 0.015, and 0.001, respectively). R5% and R5-R20 changes in IOS were associated with TRACK (p = 0.04 and 0.025, respectively). Sensitivity and specificity of TRACK were 80.8% (67.5-90.4) and 100% (94.1-100), respectively, with cut-off points >95 and AUC 93.8%. CONCLUSION: TRACK score appears to have a stronger association with the IOS parameter than C-ACT score. Our findings indicate that TRACK is a valid tool for assessing asthma control in preschool children.

The study aimed to assess the impact of feeding Bengal gram residual forage-based pelleted Total Mixed Ration (TMR) with varying concentrate (C) to roughage (R) ratios on feed intake, nutrient utilization, growth, and carcass characteristics in Barbari kids. Sixteen weaned male Barbari kids (av. age, 233 ± 11 days; weight, 13.86 ± 0.76 kg) were divided into two groups (T1 and T2), each receiving different pelleted diets (TMR) with distinct concentrate to roughage ratios (T1 with 60:40; T2 with 40:60). The kids were fed for 133 days, and a digestion trial was conducted at the end of the study. After completion, all kids were slaughtered. Although, kids under T1 consumed higher (P < 0.001) amount of dry matter, and crude protein compared to T2, which was due to a higher concentrate to roughage ratio in T1. But, the average daily body weight gain (ADG) of finisher kids was 88.53, and 79.83 g/d/kid in T1 and T2, respectively; however, the difference was non-significant. Digestibility of organic matter, crude protein, and total carbohydrate was also greater in T1 compared to T2. Total digestible nutrients intake was higher (P < 0.001) in T1; similarly intake of digestible energy, and metabolizable energy were significantly increased (P < 0.01) in T1 compared to T2. Concentrations of volatile fatty acids and NH3-nitrogen were also enhanced (P < 0.05) in T1 compared to T2. We observed similar carcass weight, and dressing percentage in both groups, and carcass composition remained unaffected. The pelleted diet containing greater ratio of concentrate: roughage (60:40) had no additional benefits in terms of ADG, and carcass traits in finisher kids. Therefore, it may be concluded that the Bengal gram residual forage-based pelleted TMR diet containing C40: R60 (TDN 57.13%, DCP 7.64%, ME 9.11MJ/kg feed) is suitable for optimizing growth performance with desirable carcass traits, and meat composition in finisher Barbari kids reared under the intensive system.

PURPOSE: This study aims to compare the functional and radiological outcomes following both guided growth surgery (GGS) and acute corrective osteotomy (ACO) correction of angular deformities in children with rickets. METHODS: A total of 8 and 7 children who had gradual GGS and ACO correction, respectively, for angular deformities due to rickets from 2002 to 2022 were recalled for follow-up. Demographic data, types of rickets, data on pharmacological treatment, biochemical parameters, recurrence of angular deformity and postoperative complications were obtained from the medical records. A radiographic evaluation of the leg was performed to determine the tibiofemoral angle. For functional evaluation, the Active Scale for Kids (ASK) and Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS) instruments were used for children below and above 15 years old, respectively. RESULTS: In terms of the tibiofemoral angle, the GGS group documented greater angle changes compared to the ACO group, but the difference was not significant. In terms of functional outcomes, the overall score percentage of both groups was comparable with the GGS group showing a trend of higher score percentage compared to the ACO group. The GGS group presented no complication while 2 neurovascular injuries and 1 implant failure were recorded in the ACO group. CONCLUSION: Both GGS and ACO procedures resulted in similar radiographic and functional outcomes for the treatment of rickets in children. GGS may be advantageous in terms of reducing complications of surgery. Nevertheless, the choice of surgical intervention should be made based on the patient's circumstances and the surgeon's preference.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to analyze the relative risks for total thyroidectomies by comparing complication rates for total versus partial thyroidectomy in the pediatric population. METHODS: We queried the Kids' Inpatient Database (KID) 1997-2012 for all cases of total (n = 3253) or partial (n = 2380) thyroidectomy. We then designed a propensity score matching model and compared total versus partial thyroidectomy based on surgical complications and outcomes. RESULTS: In our cohort, the median age was 16 years and 79% were females. Those treated at a specialty pediatric hospital or pediatric unit in a general hospital comprised 73% of all patients. The most common indications for surgery were malignancy (46%) and goiter (42%). The most common complications were hypocalcemia and nerve injury with an unweighted incidence of 9% (n = 174) and 3% (n = 57) respectively. When compared to partial thyroidectomy, total thyroidectomy was associated with increased rates of postoperative complications. Additionally, the median length of stay was significantly higher for total thyroidectomy patients. CONCLUSIONS: This is the largest analysis to date comparing outcomes for total versus partial thyroidectomy in the pediatric population. Surgeons should consider the increased rates of hypocalcemia and nerve injury complications when selecting total compared to partial thyroidectomy in children.

Cryptosporidium spp. remain a major cause of waterborne diarrhea and illness in developing countries and represent a significant burden to farmers worldwide. Cryptosporidium parvum virus 1 (CSpV1), of the genus Cryspovirus, was first reported to be present in the cytoplasm of C. parvum in 1997. Full-length genome sequences have been obtained from C. parvum from Iowa (Iowa), Kansas (KSU) and China. We aimed at characterizing the genome of CSpV1 from France and used sequence analysis from Cryptosporidium isolates to explore whether CSpV1 genome diversity varies over time, with geographical sampling location, C. parvum genetic diversity, or ruminant host species. A total of 123 fecal samples of cattle, sheep and goats were collected from 17 different French departments (57 diseased animal fecal samples and 66 healthy animal fecal samples). Subtyping analysis of the C. parvum isolates revealed the presence of two zoonotic subtype families IIa and IId. Sequence analysis of CSpV1 revealed that all CSpV1 from France, regardless of the subtype of C. parvum (IIaA15G2R1, IIaA17G2R1 and IIdA18G1R1) are more closely related to CSpV1 from Turkey, and cluster on a distinct branch from CSpV1 collected from C. parvum subtype IIaA15G2R1 from Asia and North America. We also found that samples collected on a given year or successive years in a given location are more likely to host the same subtype of C. parvum and the same CSpV1 strain. Yet, there is no distinct clustering of CSpV1 per French department or ruminants, probably due to trade, and transmission of C. parvum among host species. Our results point towards (i) a close association between CSpV1 movement and C. parvum movement, (ii) recent migrations of C. parvum among distantly located departments and (iii) incidental transmission of C. parvum between ruminants. All together, these results provide insightful information regarding CSpV1 evolution and suggest the virus might be used as an epidemiological tracer for C. parvum. Future studies need to investigate CSpV1's role in C. parvum virulence and on subtype ability to infect different species.

OBJECTIVE: We aim to examine the impact of corticosteroids use on ADHD among children with asthma by administration routes. METHODS: A population-based, cross-sectional analysis included pediatric patients ages 5-20 years old from the 2016 and 2019 Kids Inpatient Database (unweighted N = 111,702). ICD-10-CM codes were used to identify corticosteroids use, asthma, and ADHD cases. Survey logistic regression models with purposeful variable selection algorithms were built to examine the association between corticosteroids use, and ADHD by asthma severity and age. An inverse probability weighting (IPW) approach was used to help further control residual confounding. RESULTS: Among children aged 5-11 years old, the odds of ADHD were significantly higher in children with moderate to severe asthma who used inhaled corticosteroids than nonusers (moderate asthma: adjusted odds ratios [aOR] 1.46, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.14-2.44; severe asthma: aOR 1.61, 95% CI 1.18-2.21). Although oral corticosteroid use was not independently associated with ADHD in young children, combined use of inhaled and oral corticosteroid had almost 5 times higher odds of use among ADHD in children with severe asthma vs. nonusers (aOR 4.85, 95% CI 2.07 - 11.35). No associations were found between any corticosteroid use and ADHD among asthmatic children aged 12-20 years. CONCLUSIONS: In this retrospective analysis, we found inhaled corticosteroids were positively associated with ADHD in younger children with moderate to severe asthma, but not in older children.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenic Clostridia cause neurotoxic, histotoxic and enterotoxic infections in humans and animals. Several Clostridium species have been associated with abomasitis in ruminants. The present study aimed to investigate the frequency, and the presence of virulence genes, of Clostridium perfringens, Paeniclostridium sordellii and Clostridium septicum in lambs and goat kids with hemorrhagic abomasitis. RESULTS: A total of 38 abomasum samples, collected from lambs and goat kids of 1 week to 1 month of age in different farms located in eastern Turkey between 2021 and 2022, were evaluated by histopathology, culture and PCR. At necropsy, the abomasum of the animals was excessively filled with caseinized content and gas, and the abomasum mucosa was hemorrhagic in varying degrees. In histopathological evaluation, acute necrotizing hemorrhagic inflammation was noted in abomasum samples. The examination of swab samples by culture and PCR revealed that C. perfringens type A was the most frequently detected species (86.84%) either alone or in combination with other Clostridium species. P. sordellii, C. perfringens type F and C. septicum were also harboured in the samples, albeit at low rates. Beta2 toxin gene (cpb2) was found in three of C. perfringens type A positive samples. CONCLUSION: It was suggested that vaccination of pregnant animals with toxoid vaccines would be beneficial in terms of protecting newborn animals against Clostridial infections. This study investigated the presence of clostridial toxin genes in abomasal samples for the first time in Turkey.

Children and adolescents worldwide, especially girls, do not meet moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) guidelines, a situation which is related to obesity and other comorbidities. Sex/gender differences in the practice of MVPA and motivations to engage in physical activity have not been previously examined among Spanish students considering different educational levels. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore these differences and analyse if motivations mediate the relationship between educational levels and MVPA in a large sample of students. From different schools in the Madrid region (primary: 11,122; lower secondary: 12,379; upper secondary: 3228) 26,729 students (13,491 boys and 13,238 girls; 9-19 years old) were recruited to participate in this study. The short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and the third version of the Behavioural Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire were used to evaluate, MVPA and motivations to exercise, respectively. Two-way ANCOVA and a mediation analysis were performed. Female students were found to be less active than males (43.4±38.7 and 58.6±45.9 min of MVPA; p < 0.001; ηp2 = 0.023) and showed lower intrinsic (ηp2 = 0.003), and integrated (ηp2 = 0.007) motivations than their male counterparts (p < 0.001). Primary school students were more active than lower and upper secondary students (53.3±44.2, 49.9±42.3 and 48.0±42.8 min of MVPA; p < 0.001; ηp2 = 0.002) and also presented higher intrinsic (ηp2 = 0.011) and integrated (ηp2 = 0.010) motivation than secondary school students (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Among Spanish children and adolescents, females showed lower levels of MVPA and intrinsic and integrated motivation across all the educational levels, and among primary school students in comparison to secondary school. This suggests that inner motivation is more determinant of increased engagement in MVPA and thus, there is need to reinforce it before the transition to secondary school and with special focus on females' preferences. What is Known: â¢Many children and adolescents worldwide, do not meet physical activity (PA) recommendations. ⢠Within the self-determination theory, autonomous motivation seems to be the main responsible of greater PA levels. What is New: â¢This study shows for the first time sex and educational level differences in PA levels in a representative sample of Spanish students (9-19 yrs). â¢Autonomous motivation decreased from primary school onwards and was lower in female students than in their male counterparts.

Foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) is a relatively common emergency and a potential cause of sudden death both in children and older people; bystander immediate action will determine the victim's outcome. Although many school children's basic life support (BLS) training programs have been implemented in recent years, references to specific training on FBAO are lacking. Therefore, the aim was to assess FBAO-solving knowledge acquisition in 10-13-year-old school children. A quasi-experimental non-controlled simulation study was carried out on 564 ten-to-thirteen-year-old children from 5 schools in Galicia (Spain). Participants received a 60-min training led by their physical education teachers (5 min theory, 15 min demonstration by the teacher, and 30 min hands-on training) on how to help to solve an FBAO event. After the training session, the school children's skills were assessed in a standardized adult's progressive FBAO simulation scenario. The assessment was carried out by proficient researchers utilizing a comprehensive checklist specifically designed to address the variables involved in resolving a FBAO event according with current international guidelines. The assessment of school children's acquired knowledge during the simulated mild FBAO revealed that 62.2% of participants successfully identified the event and promptly encouraged the simulated patient to cough actively. When the obstruction progressed, its severity was recognized by 86.2% and back blows were administered, followed by abdominal thrusts by 90.4%. When the simulated victim became unconscious, 77.1% of children identified the situation and immediately called the emergency medical service and 81.1% initiated chest compressions. No significant differences in performance were detected according to participants' age. Conclusion: A brief focused training contributes to prepare 10-13-year-old school children to perform the recommended FBAO steps in a standardized simulated patient. We consider that FBAO should be included in BLS training programs for school children. What is Known: ⢠Kids Save Lives strategy states that school children should learn basic life support (BLS) skills because of their potential role as first responders. ⢠This BLS training does not include content for resolving a foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO). What is New: ⢠Following a 60-min theoretical-practical training led by physical education teachers, 10-13-year-old school children are able to solve a simulated FBAO situation. ⢠The inclusion of FBAO content in BLS training in schools should be considered.

OBJECTIVE: It is unknown whether the nutritional quality of children's menus varies depending on the cuisine type. This study aimed to investigate differences in the nutritional quality of children's menus by cuisine type in restaurants located in Perth, Western Australia (WA). DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Perth, WA. PARTICIPANTS: Children's menus (n 139) from the five most prevalent restaurant cuisine types in Perth (i.e. Chinese, Modern Australian, Italian, Indian and Japanese) were assessed using the Children's Menu Assessment Tool (CMAT; range -5-21 with lower scores denoting lower nutritional quality) and the Food Traffic Light system, evaluated against Healthy Options WA Food and Nutrition Policy recommendations. Non-parametric ANOVA was used to test for a significant difference in total CMAT scores among cuisine types. RESULTS: Total CMAT scores were low for all cuisine types (range -2-5), with a significant difference between cuisine types (Kruskal-Wallis H = 58·8, P < 0·001). The highest total CMAT score by cuisine type was Modern Australian (mean = 2·27, sd = 1·41) followed by Italian (mean = 2·02, sd = 1·02), Japanese (mean = 1·80, sd = 2·39), Indian (mean = 0·30, sd = 0·97) and Chinese (mean = 0·07, sd = 0·83). When using the Food Traffic Light for assessment, Japanese cuisine had the highest percentage of green food items (44 %), followed by Italian (42 %), Modern Australian (38 %), Indian (17 %) and Chinese (14 %). CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the nutritional quality of children's menus was poor regardless of cuisine type. However, children's menus from Japanese, Italian and Modern Australian restaurants scored better in terms of nutritional quality than children's menus from Chinese and Indian restaurants.

Reproductive traits have a high economic value in goat breeding, and increasing the number of lambs produced by ewes is of great importance to improve the production efficiency of goat farming. Lambing traits in goats are low heritability traits, but their genetic basis is ultimately determined by genes. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between INHA, RARG, and PGR gene polymorphisms and production performance, such as lambing, cashmere production, milk production, and body size in Liaoning cashmere goats. A total of six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) loci were identified in these three genes, G144A and T504C on the INHA gene, A56G, G144A, G490C on the RARG gene, and G109519T on the PGR gene. For lambing and cashmere production traits, the AA genotype of G144A on the INHA gene, TT on the T504C genotype, GG genotype of G144A on the INHA gene, A56G, G144A, and T504C on RARG and G109519T on PGR gene are dominant genotypes. AATT is a dominant haplotype combination. Allele G can be used as a molecular marker for lambing, cashmere, and milk production traits in Liaoning cashmere goats. Marker-assisted selection can be used for early selection to achieve improvement of genetic traits in Liaoning cashmere goats.
