RESUMO

Plants synthesize an array of volatile compounds, many of which serve ecological roles in attracting pollinators, deterring herbivores, and communicating with their surroundings. Methyl anthranilate (MeAA) is an anti-herbivory defensive volatile responsible for grape aroma that is emitted by several agriculturally relevant plants, including citrus, grapes, and maize. Unlike maize, which uses a one-step anthranilate methyltransferase (AAMT), grapes have been thought to use a two-step pathway for MeAA biosynthesis. By mining available transcriptomics data, we identified two AAMTs in Vitis vinifera (wine grape), as well as one ortholog in "Concord" grape. Many angiosperms methylate the plant hormone salicylic acid (SA) to produce methyl salicylate, which acts as a plant-to-plant communication molecule. Because the Citrus sinensis (sweet orange) SA methyltransferase can methylate both anthranilate (AA) and SA, we used this enzyme to examine the molecular basis of AA activity by introducing rational mutations, which identified several active site residues that increase activity with AA. Reversing this approach, we introduced mutations that imparted activity with SA in the maize AAMT, which uncovered different active site residues from those in the citrus enzyme. Sequence and phylogenetic analysis revealed that one of the Vitis AAMTs shares an ancestor with jasmonic acid methyltransferases, similar to the AAMT from strawberry (Frageria sp.). Collectively, these data demonstrate the molecular mechanisms underpinning AA activity across methyltransferases and identify one-step enzymes by which grapes synthesize MeAA.

BACKGROUND: Public institutions have the opportunity to implement environmental sustainability policies through leveraging their buying potential. Given the role of hospitals within the food system, the implementation of sustainable initiatives into hospital foodservices is a priority. Compared to conventional agricultural methods, organic food production uses more sustainable practices and warrants consideration for utilisation in hospitals. This systematic review aimed to synthesise the published literature to identify benefits, limitations and implementation issues regarding the use of organic foods in hospital foodservice settings. METHODS: The review protocol was prospectively published (PROSPERO registration CRD42022322245) and reported consistent with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A systematic search of four databases was undertaken for papers published from January 2000 to March 2022; key outcome data were extracted and synthesised. Study quality was assessed using the Quality Criteria Checklist for Primary Research or the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme checklist. RESULTS: After review of 4102 titles/abstracts and 113 full-text papers, the final library comprised 10 papers of moderate to high quality. The implementation of organic foods increased quality in addition to environmental sustainability improvements. The price premium, additional production requirements, change to kitchen routines and concerns with food quality and security of supply were reported as barriers. Government targets for increasing organic food, organisational support, and staff knowledge and training supported implementation. CONCLUSIONS: This review identified opportunities for the implementation of organic foods into hospital foodservices, but there are numerous barriers to be overcome through strategies including organisational support and staff training.

BACKGROUND: To understand, monitor and compare the scope of food waste in hospital foodservices, it is essential to measure food waste using a standardised method. The aims of this systematic review were to: (i) describe and critique the methodological features of waste audits used in hospital foodservice settings that measure aggregate food and food-related waste and (ii) develop a consensus tool for conducting a food waste audit in a hospital foodservice setting. METHODS: Seven electronic databases were searched for peer reviewed literature, and 17 Google Advanced searches located grey literature that described food waste audit methods previously used or developed for hospital foodservices. Study selection and quality assessment occurred in duplicate. Data describing the audit method, its feasibility, and strengths and limitations were extracted and synthesised to develop a consensus tool. RESULTS: Eight peer reviewed and nine grey literature documents describing a variety of food waste audit methods were found. The most common practices were 2-week data collection (n = 5), foodservice staff collecting data (n = 6), measuring food waste only (n = 11), measuring food waste at main meals (n = 5) and using electronic scales to measure waste (n = 12). A consensus tool was developed that proposes a method for preparing, conducting and analysing data from a food waste audit. CONCLUSIONS: This review used published evidence to develop the first ever food waste audit consensus tool for hospital foodservices to use and measure food and food-related waste. Future research is needed to apply and test this tool in practice.

OBJECTIVES: Examine sociodemographic differences (gender, age, and language spoken at home) on baseline Child Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 5th Edition (Child SCAT5) scores and establish normative reference data for the Child SCAT5 among middle school student athletes. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Nine middle schools in Virginia. PARTICIPANTS: A sample of 1355 athletes playing competitive school-sponsored sports (ages 11-13, M = 12.3 ± 0.8; 40.1% girls, 59.9% boys) during the 2017 and 2018 school year. Certified athletic trainers administered the Child SCAT5 within the first 2 weeks of the sport season. INDEPENDENT VARIABLES: Self-reported gender, age, and language spoken at home. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: All Child SCAT5 outcome measures. RESULTS: Gender, age, and language spoken at home were associated with Child SCAT5 scores, but the magnitude of differences was generally small. Specifically, girls endorsed more symptoms (girls: M = 8.4 ± 5.7, boys: M = 7.5 ± 5.7; P = 0.003) and greater symptom severity (girls: M = 11.6 ± 9.4, boys: M = 10.4 ± 9.3; P = 0.006) than boys and performed slightly better than boys on cognitive and balance tasks. Older students performed slightly better than younger students on tests of cognition (eg, SAC-C: 11-year-olds: M = 21.3 ± 2.1, 13-year-olds: M = 21.7 ± 2.1; P = 0.02). Total symptoms (P = 0.01), symptom severity (P = 0.01), immediate memory (P < 0.001), delayed recall (P = 0.001), and SAC-C total scores (P = 0.002) differed across language groups. CONCLUSIONS: Gender, age, and language spoken in the home are associated with baseline scores on multiple components of the Child SCAT5 among middle school students, although the magnitudes of observed differences are small. Normative reference values are provided for clinicians when interpreting Child SCAT5 scores.

AIMS: The objective of this study was to compare recovery time and duration of active rehabilitation following concussion between adolescents with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted among adolescents presenting to a specialty concussion clinic. One-quarter of the eligible episodes of care were selected. The final sample included 540 adolescents (ages 13-17 years, median age 15 years; 49.8% girls), of which 65 (12.0%) had a pre-injury diagnosis of ADHD. Days to recovery and days of active rehabilitation were examined. RESULTS: ADHD was not associated with recovery time (ADHD: median = 49 days, IQR = 25-77; No ADHD: median = 47 days, IQR = 29-85) in univariate (Z = -0.45; p = 0.65) or multivariable analyses (Hazard Ratio: 1.17 (0.85-1.61); χ2(1) = 0.95; p = 0.33). The duration of active rehabilitation services received did not differ between youth with ADHD (median = 38.5 days, IQR = 27.5-54.5) and without ADHD (median = 37.5 days, IQR = 18.5-66) in univariate (Z = -0.19; p = 0.85) or multivariable analyses (Hazard Ratio: 1.04 (0.67-1.63); χ2(1) = 0.03; p = 0.85). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support accumulating evidence that ADHD, in and of itself, is not a risk factor for longer recovery or worse outcomes following pediatric concussion.

RESUMO

Amyloids are a broad class of proteins and peptides that can misfold and assemble into long unbranched fibrils with a cross-ß conformation. These misfolding and aggregation events are associated with the onset of a variety of human diseases, among them, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Huntington disease. Our understanding of amyloids has been greatly supported by fluorescent molecular probes, such as thioflavin-T, which shows an increase in fluorescence emission upon binding to fibrillar aggregates. Since the first application of thioflavin-T in amyloid studies nearly 30 years ago, many probes have emerged exhibiting a variety of responses to amyloids, such as intensity changes, shifts in fluorescence maxima, and variations in lifetimes, among many others. These probes have shed light on a variety of topics including the kinetics of amyloid aggregation, the effectiveness of amyloid aggregation inhibitors, the elucidation of binding sites in amyloid structures, and the staining of amyloids aggregates in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo. In this Review, we discuss the design, properties, and application of photoactive probes used to study amyloid aggregation, as well as the challenges faced by current probes and techniques, and the novel approaches that are emerging to address these challenges.

OBJECTIVE: Examine lifetime history of concussions in middle school student athletes who have attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Nine middle schools in Virginia, USA. PARTICIPANTS: A sample of 1037 middle school students (ages 11-14 years, M = 12.6, SD = 0.93; 45.8% girls) underwent baseline/preseason assessments during the 2017 to 2018 academic year and self-reported their health history, including whether or not they had been diagnosed with ADHD. Athletes were divided into 2 groups, those with ADHD (n = 71; 6.8%) and control subjects (n = 966). INDEPENDENT VARIABLES: Self-reported diagnosis of ADHD and self-identified sex. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Self-reported concussion history. RESULTS: In the total sample, boys were more likely to report a previous history of concussion than girls [χ2(1) = 10.81, P = 0.001; odds ratio (OR) = 1.92; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.30-2.85]. The rate of previous concussion in children with ADHD (23.9%) was twice the rate of previous concussion among children without ADHD (11.4%) [χ2(1) = 9.70, P = 0.002; OR = 2.45; 95% CI, 1.37-4.38]. Approximately 1 in 4 boys with ADHD (24.5%) and 1 in 5 girls with ADHD (22.2%) reported having sustained one or more previous concussions. CONCLUSIONS: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is associated with a greater prevalence of previous concussion in middle school children. Further research is needed to understand the risk of sustaining concussion for young athletes with ADHD, as well as short- and long-term outcomes of concussion among young athletes with ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate (1) if there are meaningful differences in baseline preseason cognitive functioning or symptom reporting between high school ice hockey players with and without prior concussions and (2) determine which health history variables predict symptom reporting. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: High schools across the state of Maine. PARTICIPANTS: Participants were 1616 male high school ice hockey players (mean age = 15.6 years; SD = 1.5 years) who completed baseline testing between 2009 and 2015. INDEPENDENT VARIABLES: Athletes were grouped according to their self-reported concussion history [0 (n = 1136), 1 (n = 321), 2 (n = 112), or 3+ (n = 47) previous concussions]. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Cognitive functioning was measured by the Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) battery, and symptom ratings were obtained from the Post-Concussion Symptom Scale. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between groups in cognitive functioning as measured by ImPACT. The group with ≥3 prior concussions endorsed higher total symptom scores, but the effect sizes were small and not statistically significant. In a multivariate model, prior treatment for headaches (not necessarily migraines), prior treatment for a psychiatric condition, and prior treatment for substance/alcohol use all significantly predicted total symptom scores, with concussion history being the weakest independent predictor. CONCLUSIONS: Players with a history of prior concussions performed similarly to players with no prior concussions on cognitive testing. Health history factors were more strongly associated with symptom reporting than concussion history.

OBJECTIVES: The primary purpose of this study was to examine vestibular/ocular motor screening (VOMS) test performance in a sample of healthy youth ice hockey players. A particular focus was to investigate the potential effects of age and pre-existing health conditions, including concussion history, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disability (LD), headaches/migraines, and depression/anxiety on preseason baseline VOMS performance, including the near point of convergence (NPC) distance. DESIGN: Cross-sectional cohort. SETTING: Outpatient physiotherapy clinic. PARTICIPANTS: Three hundred eighty-seven male youth hockey players, with an average age of 11.9 years (SD = 2.2, range = 8-17), completed the VOMS and responded to self- or parent-reported demographic and medical history questionnaires during preseason baseline assessments. INDEPENDENT VARIABLES ASSESSED: Age, sex, and mental and physical health history including ADHD, headaches, depression, anxiety, migraine, and LD. OUTCOME MEASURE: Vestibular/ocular motor screening. RESULTS: The large majority of boys scored within normal limits on the VOMS, ie, they reported no symptom provocation of more than 2 points on any VOMS subset (89%) and had a normal NPC distance, ie, <5 cm (78%). The individual VOMS subtests had low abnormality rates, and demographic and pre-existing health conditions, such as age, headache or migraine history, previous neurodevelopmental conditions, or mental health problems, were not associated with clinically meaningful symptom provocation during the VOMS. CONCLUSIONS: There was a low rate of abnormal findings for the individual VOMS subtests, with the exception of NPC distance, among male youth hockey players during preseason assessment.

OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between pre-existing migraines and postconcussion symptoms and cognitive performance acutely (within 72 hours) after a suspected concussion. DESIGN: Nested case-control study. SETTING: High schools in Maine, USA. PARTICIPANTS: From a sample of 39 161 adolescent athletes who underwent baseline preseason testing, 633 were assessed within 3 days of a suspected concussion. Of these, 59 reported a history of treatment for migraines at baseline (9.3%). These athletes were individually matched to 2 athletes who had a suspected concussion but denied preinjury migraines (total N = 177; age: M = 15.8, SD = 1.3). ASSESSMENT OF RISK FACTORS: Self-reported history of treatment for migraines by a physician. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Post-Concussion Symptom Scale total score, ImPACT composite scores, and individual symptom endorsement. RESULTS: Individuals with a pre-existing migraine disorder endorsed greater symptom severity (M = 8.4, SD = 9.9) compared with controls (M = 4.5, SD = 6.5; Cohen's d = 0.47) at preinjury baseline and acutely after suspected injury (migraine: M = 26.0, SD = 25.5; controls: M = 16.7, SD = 15.4; d = 0.44). Acutely after a suspected concussion, greater proportions of athletes with migraine disorders reported mental fogginess (49.2% vs 33.9%) and memory problems (39.0% vs 24.6%; P < 0.05). Baseline ImPACT composite scores were similar between migraine and control groups (d = 0.04-0.13). Adolescents with pre-existing migraine disorders performed worse after a suspected concussion compared with the control participants on verbal memory (F = 4.32, P = 0.041) and visual memory (F = 3.95, P = 0.049). CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with pre-existing migraine disorders may be at higher risk for worse outcomes, including greater overall burden of symptoms and worse cognitive functioning in the memory domain, in the first 72 hours after concussion.

AIMS: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can impair physical function in children. The NIH Toolbox Motor Battery (NIHTB-M) was designed to be a brief assessment of physical function, but no studies have examined its use in children with TBI. This study aims to describe the feasibility of using the NIHTB-M to assess children with TBI. METHODS: The NIHTB-M was administered to children with TBI 2 weeks (n = 22) and/or 6 months (n = 23) following injury. This descriptive study summarizes participant performance, administration challenges, and the association between NIHTB-M scores, participant characteristics, and subjective report of physical function. RESULTS: Of the NIHTB-M domains, deficits in endurance and balance were most prevalent. Children aged 5 to 16 years could complete the assessment per administration guidelines, except for a few cases (n = 3) where orthopedic injuries limited participation. Younger children (aged 3 to 4) had difficulty following the NIHTB-M directions. Technological issues impacted balance assessment in several cases (n = 6). CONCLUSION: The NIHTB-M is brief to administer, generally well tolerated by school-aged children and, despite occasional technological challenges, is a feasible performance-based battery for assessment of children with TBI for clinical and research purposes. Additional investigation of psychometric properties and ceiling and floor effects is needed.

OBJECTIVE: Identifying personal characteristics associated with sustaining a concussion is of great interest, yet only a few have examined this in children. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between sex, neurodevelopmental disorders, health history, and lifetime history of self-reported concussion in 12- and 13-year-old athletes. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Middle schools. PARTICIPANTS: Participants were 1744 twelve- and thirteen-year-old student athletes who completed preseason Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) testing, including a self-report questionnaire about previous concussions, developmental diagnoses, and previous medical treatment. INDEPENDENT VARIABLES: Age, sex, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities (LDs), and previous treatment for migraine. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Self-reported history of concussion. RESULTS: A minority of athletes (13.7%) reported previous concussions (1 concussion, n = 181; 2 concussions, n = 41; and 3+ concussions, n = 17). A small proportion reported a history of ADHD (4.4%), LD (2.8%) or migraine treatment (4.0%). Higher rates of self-reported previous concussions were associated with male sex [16.9% vs 9.1%; χ(1) = 21.47, P < 0.001] and previous migraine treatment [31.9% vs 13.0%; χ(1) = 20.08, P < 0.001]. There were no differences in self-reported concussion history between 12- and 13-year olds (P = 0.18) and those with/without ADHD (P = 0.41) or LDs (P = 0.06). The overall logistic regression model was statistically significant [χ(5) = 42.01, P < 0.001] but explained only 4.3% of the variance. Previous treatment for migraine [P < 0.001, Exp(B) = 3.30] and male sex [P < 0.001, Exp(B) = 2.06] were independently associated with a self-reported concussion history, whereas age, LD, and ADHD were not (P's > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Male sex and previous migraine treatment were associated with higher rates of self-reported previous concussions in both independent and multivariate models in middle school athletes, whereas age, ADHD, and LDs were not.

While slow processing speed (PS) is well documented in youth with ADHD, growing evidence suggests that this difficulty affects children with other neuropsychiatric conditions. Clarifying the relationship between slow PS and different forms of psychopathology is important clinically, given the potential impact of PS on academic functioning, and conceptually. In 751 youth, ages 6-21, consecutively referred for neuropsychiatric evaluation, we examined the association between slow PS (i.e., Wechsler PS Index < 85) and seven neuropsychiatric diagnostic groups. In 492 of these youth, we also related slow PS to eight psychopathology symptom dimensions. Finally, we modeled the relationship between PS, other cognitive functions and academic achievement. Data are from the Longitudinal Study of Genetic Influences on Cognition. Analyses included one-sample t tests, ANOVA, logistic regression, mixed modeling, and structural equation modeling (SEM), controlling for age, sex, and medication. Compared to normative data, all clinical groups showed PS decrements. Compared to referred youth without full diagnoses and accounting for other psychopathology, risk for slow PS was elevated in youth with autism spectrum disorder (OR = 1.8), psychotic disorders (OR = 3.4) and ADHD-inattentive type (OR = 1.6). Having multiple comorbidities also increased risk for slow PS. Among dimensions, inattention (OR = 1.5) associated with slow PS but did not fully explain the association with autism or psychosis. In SEM, PS had direct effects on academic achievement and indirect effects through working memory. Findings extend evidence that PS relates to multiple aspects of child psychopathology and associates with academic achievement in child psychiatric outpatients.

The training of soldiers for urban conflict involves marksmanship instruction on outdoor flat ranges and the teaching of close-quarter battle techniques in indoor facilities, referred to as shoot houses, where intense firing exercises can generate high air lead levels from small arms ammunition, flash bang grenades, and explosive devices. Levels of lead and copper in air were evaluated during five training activities of a 45-day training course using both stationary general area and breathing zone sampling over a 2-year period. Individual blood lead values were determined prior to and at course completion. Mean breathing zone lead concentrations for the five training activities ranged from 0.014 on the outdoor flat range to 0.064 mg/m3 inside shoot houses; with a change to lead-free ammunition the values were reduced to a range of 0.006-0.022 mg/m3. Isolated flash bang grenades generated very high general area lead concentrations (2.0 mg/m3), which in training were associated with the highest measured breathing zone concentration (0.16 mg/m3). For copper, mean breathing zone concentrations increased from 0.010 to 0.037 mg/m3 with the change to lead-free frangible ammunition on the outdoor range, but remained below the permissible exposure limit for copper fume. Inside shoot houses, mean breathing zone copper concentrations exceeded the permissible exposure limit with ball and lead-free frangible ammunition, ranging from 0.077-0.13 mg/m3. With the introduction of lead-free ammunition, when comparing the blood lead differences between start and finish of the course, there was a significant reduction in the mean blood lead difference from 13.3 µg/dL to 5.4 µg/dL. Options for mitigation of potentially high exposure areas using improved ventilation designs are discussed. These results advocate for improved designs for shoot house training facilities, stress the importance of removing lead from ammunition and explosive devices for training, and promote the continued need for implementation of controls to mitigate and manage metal exposures during training.

The formation of oligomeric soluble aggregates is related to the toxicity of amyloid peptides and proteins. In this manuscript, we report the use of a ruthenium polypyridyl complex ([Ru(bpy)2(dpqp)]2+) to track the formation of amyloid oligomers at different times using photoluminescence anisotropy. This technique is sensitive to the rotational correlation time of the molecule under study, which is consequently related to the size of the molecule. [Ru(bpy)2(dpqp)]2+ presents anisotropy values of zero when free in solution (due to its rapid rotation and long lifetime) but larger values as the size and concentration of amyloid-ß (Aß) oligomers increase. Our assays show that Aß forms oligomers immediately after the assay is started, reaching a steady state at ∼48 h. SDS-PAGE, DLS, and TEM were used to confirm and characterize the formation of oligomers. Our experiments show that the rate of formation for Aß oligomers is temperature dependent, with faster rates as the temperature of the assay is increased. The probe was also effective in monitoring the formation of α-synuclein oligomers at different times.

OBJECTIVE: To compare Child Sport Concussion Assessment Tool Fifth Edition (Child SCAT5) performance between uninjured children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and precisely matched controls without ADHD. STUDY DESIGN: A nested case-control study was conducted within a cohort of middle school athletes (age 11-12 years) who completed preseason testing. Students with ADHD were individually matched to students without ADHD based on age, sex, language spoken at home, number of prior concussions, sport, and school they attended. The final sample included 54 students (27 with ADHD and 27 controls), 38 (70.4%) boys and 16 (29.6%) girls (average age: 11.7 years, SD = 0.5). RESULTS: Children with ADHD reported more symptoms (M = 13.33, SD = 5.69, P < .001) and greater symptom severity (M = 22.59, SD = 1 1.60, P < .001) compared with controls (total symptoms: M = 6.44, SD = 4.96; symptom severity: M = 8.04, SD = 6.36). Children with ADHD performed similarly to controls on the Child SCAT5 cognitive tests. Children with ADHD committed 3 times as many total balance errors (median = 6) than children without ADHD (median = 2) and committed twice as many errors on single leg stance (ADHD median = 4; No ADHD median = 2) (P values < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Children with ADHD endorsed more concussion-like symptoms and performed worse on balance testing during preseason Child SCAT5 assessment compared with matched controls without ADHD. These findings highlight the challenges of interpreting Child SCAT5 performance in children with ADHD following a concussion or suspected concussion and illustrate the value of administering the measure to children to document their pre-injury performance.

The association between slow processing speed and sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT), a phenotype described within attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) samples over the past decade, remains unclear. We examined whether SCT and processing speed predict different functional correlates within children and adolescents with ADHD. Participants were 193 clinically-referred youth meeting DSM ADHD criteria without comorbid conditions (mean age = 9.9 years, SD = 2.5; age range 6-16). The incremental utility of SCT and processing speed to predict (1) adaptive functioning and (2) academic achievement, after controlling for age, sex, medication status, and ADHD symptom burden, was assessed using hierarchical multiple regressions. SCT symptoms significantly predicted adaptive functioning, accounting for 6% of the variance, but did not predict academic achievement. Processing speed did not add incrementally to the prediction of adaptive functioning, but did predict academic achievement, accounting for 4% of the variance. Results suggest that SCT and processing speed differentially predict functional abilities not accounted for by ADHD symptom burden.

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans navigates toward a preferred temperature setpoint (Ts) determined by long-term temperature exposure. During thermotaxis, the worm migrates down temperature gradients at temperatures above Ts (negative thermotaxis) and performs isothermal tracking near Ts. Under some conditions, the worm migrates up temperature gradients below Ts (positive thermotaxis). Here, we analyze positive and negative thermotaxis toward Ts to study the role of specific neurons that have been proposed to be involved in thermotaxis using genetic ablation, behavioral tracking, and calcium imaging. We find differences in the strategies for positive and negative thermotaxis. Negative thermotaxis is achieved through biasing the frequency of reorientation maneuvers (turns and reversal turns) and biasing the direction of reorientation maneuvers toward colder temperatures. Positive thermotaxis, in contrast, biases only the direction of reorientation maneuvers toward warmer temperatures. We find that the AFD thermosensory neuron drives both positive and negative thermotaxis. The AIY interneuron, which is postsynaptic to AFD, may mediate the switch from negative to positive thermotaxis below Ts. We propose that multiple thermotactic behaviors, each defined by a distinct set of sensorimotor transformations, emanate from the AFD thermosensory neurons. AFD learns and stores the memory of preferred temperatures, detects temperature gradients, and drives the appropriate thermotactic behavior in each temperature regime by the flexible use of downstream circuits.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to report baseline, preseason data for the Child-SCAT3, stratified by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) status, and examine group differences in Child-SCAT3 performance between children with and without ADHD. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Young male hockey players (n = 304), aged 8-12 years, were administered the Child-SCAT3 during pre-season. Child-SCAT3 measures included a 20-item symptom scale, a Standardised Assessment of Concussion Child Version (SAC-C), a modified Balance Error Scoring System (m-BESS), a tandem gait task, and a coordination test. RESULTS: Children with ADHD (n = 20) endorsed significantly more symptoms (d = 0.95) and greater symptom severity (d = 1.13) compared to children without ADHD. No statistically significant differences were found between groups on Child-SCAT3 measures of cognitive or physical functioning (e.g. balance and coordination). CONCLUSIONS: ADHD should be considered when interpreting Child-SCAT3 scores, especially symptom reporting, in the context of concussion assessment. Better understanding of symptom reporting in uninjured child athletes with ADHD can inform the clinical interpretation of symptoms at baseline and following an actual or suspected concussion. Normative data for the Child-SCAT3 that is not stratified by or otherwise accounts for ADHD status should be used with caution when appraising performance of children with ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) has proven effective in reducing symptoms and behaviors related to Borderline Personality Disorder. More recently, it has been modified and applied to adolescents struggling with regulating their emotions and who may engage in impulsive, self-destructive behaviors, including nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). However, there is limited research evidence regarding the effectiveness of DBT for reducing NSSI behavior and depression among adolescents. Given the high suicide risk associated with NSSI and its association with depression, this is clearly an important focus of clinical and research attention. METHOD: This meta-analysis sought to offer preliminary evidence regarding the effectiveness of DBT to treat NSSI and depression in adolescents. Twelve published studies were included; all 12 reported pre- and post-treatment measures of depression and six of these studies reported pre- and post-treatment measures of NSSI. RESULTS: The weighted mean effect size for NSSI was large (g = 0.81, 95% CI = 0.59-1.03); the weighted mean effect size for depression was small (g = 0.36, 95% CI = 0.30-0.42). CONCLUSIONS: Intervention effects for both outcomes were positive, suggesting decreased NSSI and improvement in depressive symptoms for adolescents following a course of DBT. However, given considerable limitations in the research base available for meta-analysis, these findings are preliminary and tentative. Limitations in the current knowledge base and suggestions for future research are discussed.
