RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The Community Helpers Programme (CHP) is a peer-helping programme providing youth and young adults with tools to support their peers to problem solve and seek mental health and suicide prevention support. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the provincial programme (primary outcomes = knowledge, self-efficacy; secondary outcome = awareness of stigma) and describe the experience of participants, coordinators, and others. STUDY DESIGN: The mixed methods evaluation included a longitudinal panel design outcome evaluation along with follow-up interviews. METHODS: A series of three surveys collecting participant characteristics, knowledge, self-efficacy, and awareness of stigma at pre-training (T0), post-training (T1), and six-months follow-up (T2) were conducted. Mean group scores were calculated for completers (T0 and T1 completers and T0, T1, and T2 completers). Friedman tests were conducted to assess change over time and follow-up Wilcoxon Signed Rank tests determined the significance of changes in scores between each timepoint. Content analysis was conducted on qualitative data. RESULTS: Participants' knowledge of mental health, suicide, and available supports along with self-efficacy increased from T0 to T1, and declined at T2. Awareness of stigma was high at all timepoints. Themes from the qualitative analysis included skill and knowledge development facilitators (e.g., consideration of learner needs, passionate coordinators, engaged learning approaches), sustaining community helper connectedness (e.g., helpers' network, awareness of and communication with local resources), and role and impact of CHP (e.g., addressing stigma, success stories). CONCLUSIONS: This evaluation demonstrated that CHP was effective and offered feedback on experiences, including suggestions on CHP strengths and aspects to explore.

RESUMO

Over 7500 buried linear and curvilinear depressions interpreted as iceberg ploughmarks were identified within the Quaternary Naust Formation from an extensive three-dimensional seismic dataset that covers ~ 40,000 km2 of the mid-Norwegian continental margin. The morphology and net orientation of ploughmarks were mapped and analysed. These features are up to 28 km long, 700 m wide and are incised up to 31 m deep. On average, ploughmarks are incised 5 m deep, with median width of 185 m and median lengths ranging from 1.2 to 2.7 km for individual palaeo-surfaces. Width to depth ratio ranges from 8:1 to 400:1 and is on average 36:1. The presence of ploughmarks buried deeply within some palaeo-slope surfaces implies the occasional presence of very large icebergs since the middle Quaternary, suggesting that thick ice-sheet margins with fast-flowing ice streams were present in order to calve icebergs of such dimensions into the Norwegian Sea. The wide geographical distribution of ploughmarks suggests unrestricted iceberg drift and an open Norwegian Sea during the periods of iceberg calving since the early Quaternary. Ploughmark trajectory analysis demonstrates that the ocean current circulation, now dominated by the northeasterly flowing Norwegian Atlantic Current (NwAC), has largely persisted throughout the Quaternary. Despite the overall strikingly consistent pattern of iceberg drift, ploughmark mapping also shows evidence for short-lived NwAC reductions possibly related to major phases of iceberg discharge and/or meltwater pulses from the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet during the middle and late Quaternary.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We previously reported that exposure to a farming environment is allergy-protective, while high proportions of neonatal immature/naïve CD5+ B cells and putative regulatory T cells (Tregs) are risk factors for development of allergic disease and sensitization up to 3 years of age. OBJECTIVE: To examine if B and T cell maturation are associated with allergic disease and farming environment over the first 8 years in life. METHODS: In the prospective FARMFLORA study, including both farming and non-farming families, 48 of 65 children took part in the 8-year follow-up study. Various B and T cell maturation variables were examined in blood samples obtained at several occasions from birth to 8 years of age and related to doctors' diagnosed allergic disease and sensitization, and to farming environment. RESULTS: We found that the incidence of allergic disease was lower among farmers' compared to non-farmers' children during the 8-year follow-up period, and that farmers' children had higher proportions of memory B cells at 8 years of age. Moreover, a high proportion of neonatal CD5+ B cells was a risk factor for and may predict development of allergic disease at 8 years of age. A high proportion of Tregs was not protective against development of these conditions. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: High proportions of neonatal naïve B cells remained as a risk factor for allergic disease in school-aged children. Thus, the accelerated B cell maturation observed among farmers' children may be crucial for the allergy-protective effect of a farming environment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of clozapine is standardized to 12-h postdose samplings. In clinical settings, sampling time often deviates from this time point, although the importance of the deviation is unknown. To this end, serum concentrations (s-) of clozapine and its metabolite N-desmethyl-clozapine (norclozapine) were measured at 12 ± 1 and 2 h postdose. METHOD: Forty-six patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, and on stable clozapine treatment, were enrolled for hourly, venous blood sampling at 10-14 h postdose. RESULTS: Minor changes in median percentage values were observed for both s-clozapine (-8.4%) and s-norclozapine (+1.2%) across the 4-h time span. Maximum individual differences were 42.8% for s-clozapine and 38.4% for s-norclozapine. Compared to 12-h values, maximum median differences were 8.4% for s-clozapine and 7.3% for s-norclozapine at deviations of ±2 h. Maximum individual differences were 52.6% for s-clozapine and 105.0% for s-norclozapine. The magnitude of s-clozapine differences was significantly associated with age, body mass index and the presence of chronic basophilia or monocytosis. CONCLUSION: The impact of deviations in clozapine TDM sampling time, within the time span of 10-14 h postdose, seems of minor importance when looking at median percentage differences. However, substantial individual differences were observed, which implies a need to adhere to a fixed sampling time.

RESUMO

Reconstructing the evolution of ice sheets is critical to our understanding of the global environmental system, but most detailed palaeo-glaciological reconstructions have hitherto focused on the very recent history of ice sheets. Here, we present a three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the changing nature of ice-sheet derived sedimentary architecture through the Quaternary Ice Age of almost 3 Ma. An extensive geophysical record documents a marine-terminating, calving Fennoscandian Ice Sheet (FIS) margin present periodically on the mid-Norwegian shelf since the beginning of the Quaternary. Spatial and temporal variability of the FIS is illustrated by the gradual development of fast-flowing ice streams and associated intensification of focused glacial erosion and sedimentation since that time. Buried subglacial landforms reveal a complex and dynamic ice sheet, with converging palaeo-ice streams and several flow-switching events that may reflect major changes in topography and basal thermal regime. Lack of major subglacial meltwater channels suggests a largely distributed drainage system beneath the marine-terminating part of the FIS. This palaeo-environmental examination of the FIS provides a useful framework for ice-sheet modelling and shows that fragmentary preservation of buried surfaces and variability of ice-sheet dynamics should be taken into account when reconstructing glacial history from spatially limited datasets.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The role of FOXP3(+) regulatory T cells in the prevention against sensitization and allergy development is controversial. OBJECTIVE: We followed 65 newborn Swedish children from farming and non-farming families from birth to 3 years of age and investigated the relation between CD4(+) T cell subsets in blood samples and development of sensitization and allergic disease. METHODS: The proportions of FOXP3(+) CD25(high) , CTLA-4(+) CD25(+) , CD45RO(+) , HLA-DR(+) , CCR4(+) or α4ß7(+) within the CD4(+) T cell population were examined by flow cytometry of blood samples at several time-points. Mononuclear cells were isolated from blood and stimulated with birch allergen, ovalbumin or the mitogen PHA, and the levels of IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF, IFN-γ, IL-5 and IL-13 were measured. A clinical evaluation regarding the presence of allergen-specific IgE and allergy was performed at 18 and 36 months of age. RESULTS: Multivariate discriminant analysis revealed that children who were sensitized at 18 or 36 months of age had higher proportions of FOXP3(+) CD25(high) T cells at birth and at 3 days of life than children who remained non-sensitized, whereas allergy was unrelated to the neonatal proportions of these cells. The proportions of CTLA-4(+) CD25(+) T cells were unrelated to both sensitization and allergy. The association between higher proportions of FOXP3(+) CD25(high) T cells and sensitization persisted after exclusion of farmer's children. Finally, a farming environment was associated with lower proportions of FOXP3(+) CD25(high) T cells in early infancy and to a more prominent T cell memory conversion and cytokine production. CONCLUSION & CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Our results indicate that high proportions of FOXP3(+) CD25(high) T cells in neonates are not protective against later sensitization or development of allergy.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: International student mobility (ISM) is increasingly utilised in higher education to allow students the opportunity to engage authentically with cultures outside their own, providing an opportunity for self-growth. These growth opportunities often extend skills such as cultural competency, academic learning and self-efficacy, all of which are important skills for diagnostic radiography graduates. This study explores the motivations, benefits and pitfalls of an ISM program and highlights key considerations for academics considering organising a program within their own university. METHODS: This study utilised a combination of individual and small group interviews to collect data about diagnostic radiography students' motivations, perceived benefits and pitfalls of undertaking ISM. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis and overarching themes were developed. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Three themes were developed from the data, challenges and uncertainty, personal growth, and support. Participants undertaking ISM faced challenges such as cultural differences, as well as feelings of uncertainty. Additionally, they highlighted the importance of organisation in mitigating these challenges. Despite the challenges faced, participants reported significant personal growth and success as a result of the program, integral to this success was the support of their peers and academic advisors. CONCLUSION: ISM programs may lead to enhanced employability of diagnostic radiography graduates, with integral skills such as teamwork, communication cultural competence being enhanced in participants. The role of support during ISM is integral to the success of the program. It is imperative for academics organising ISM programs at their institutions to deliberately consider the way in which radiography students are supported both before and during the program to enhance the experience and ensure outcomes are maximised.

RESUMO

A good and accessible biomarker is of great clinical value in neuroendocrine tumor (NET) patients, especially considering its frequently indolent nature and long-term follow-up. Plasma chromogranin A (CgA) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) are currently used as biomarkers in NET, but their sensitivity and specificity are restricted. 5-HIAA is the main metabolite of serotonin, an important neurotransmitter of the tryptophan pathway. The aim of this study is to estabish a sensitive and accurate method for the quantification of tryptophan pathway metabolites in plasma. We further aimed to evaluate its utility as a clinical tool in NET disease. We obtained plasma samples from NET patients and healthy controls recruited from the University Hospital of North Norway, Tromsø. Samples were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), and eight metabolites of the tryptophan pathway were quantified. We included 130 NET patients (72/130 small intestinal [SI] NET, 35/130 pancreatic NET, 23/130 other origin) and 20 healthy controls. In the SI-NET group, 26/72 patients presented with symptoms of carcinoid syndrome (CS). We found that combining tryptophan metabolites into a serotonin/kynurenine pathway ratio improved diagnostic sensitivity (92.3%) and specificity (100%) in detecting CS patients from healthy controls compared with plasma 5-HIAA alone (sensitivity 84.6%/specificity 100%). Further, a clinical marker based on the combination of plasma serotonin, 5-HIAA, and 5OH-tryptophan, increased diagnostic capacity identifying NET patients with metastasized disease from healthy controls compared with singular plasma 5-HIAA, serotonin, or CgA. In addition, this marker was positive in 61% of curatively operated SI-NET patients compared with only 10% of healthy controls (p < .001). Our results indicate that simultaneous quantification of several tryptophan metabolites in plasma, using LC-MS/MS, may represent a clinically useful diagnostic tool in NET disease.

RESUMO

In recent years, there has been heightened awareness regarding the use of drugs to modify a person's behavior to facilitate crime. A drug rape case involving the potent, short-acting sedative triazolam will be presented. On three occasions, the victim consumed green tea and chocolate before being massaged and ultimately sexually abused. Screening for alcohol, commonly used drugs and illicit substances in blood and urine sampled during the forensic examination 20 h after the last incident, was negative. Consequently, hair samples for chemical analysis were taken from the assaulted individual 34 days after the last incidents. The hair was cut into three 2-cm segments (0-6 cm) that were washed, dissolved in extraction solvent and screened and verified by ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled with time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-TOF-MS) and with tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), respectively. In the 2-cm hair segment corresponding to the period of the alleged assaults, the presence of the sedative triazolam was revealed at a concentration of 1.0 pg/mg hair. The preserved urine sample, taken 20 h after the last incident, was reanalyzed by UPLC-MS/MS for metabolites of triazolam, and 39 µg/l α-hydroxytriazolam was detected in the hydrolyzed urine. This case illustrates that hair is a valuable forensic specimen in situations where natural processes have eliminated the drug from typical biological specimens due to delays in the crime being reported. Furthermore, it was possible to verify the hair finding with a urine sample by detection of a metabolite of triazolam.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Drug-facilitated sexual assault (DFSA) is an act of sexual violence towards a victim who is incapacitated due to the voluntary or involuntary consumption of intoxicating substances. Sexual assaults are generally considered underreported and the toxicological analysis of DFSA cases is particularly challenging when there is a time delay from assault to medical examination. The aim of this review was to investigate typical toxicological findings in global DFSA cases and describe a typical DFSA case. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A database search was conducted in PubMed using relevant search terms in order to identify studies reporting toxicological results in DFSA cases. RESULTS: In total, 22 studies were included, covering toxicological findings in DFSA cases in North America, Europe, Asia, South Africa and Australasia from 1996 to 2018. Biological matrices used for analysis included blood, urine and hair. Toxicological findings were comparable among countries, with ethanol, cocaine, cannabis, benzodiazepines, amphetamines and analgesics being among the most frequently detected substances. Ethanol was frequently detected in combination with one or more drugs. A variety of benzodiazepines were observed, with the most common being diazepam, clonazepam, alprazolam, and oxazepam. The majority of cases involved women (87%-100%). CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that a diverse range of substances are associated with DFSA and that victims are rendered vulnerable through recreational substance consumption at social events. As such, typical DFSA cases appear to be opportunistic in nature and primarily involves women in their mid-twenties and an acquaintance as the perpetrator.

RESUMO

Giant seafloor craters are known along many a continental margin with recurrent mass-wasting deposits. However, the impact of breakup-related magmatism on the evolution of such craters is barely understood. Using high-quality geophysical datasets, this work examines the genetic relationship among the location of magmatic sills, forced folds and the formation of giant paleo-seafloor craters underneath an ancient mass-transport complex in the Møre and Vøring basins, offshore Norway. The data reveal that forced folding of near-seafloor strata occurred because of the intrusion of several interconnected magmatic sills. Estimates of 1-dimensional uplift based on well data show that uplift occurred due to the intrusion of magma in Upper Cretaceous to Lower Eocene strata. Our findings also prove that subsurface fluid plumbing associated with the magmatic sills was prolonged in time and led to the development of several vertical fluid flow conduits, some of which triggered mass wasting in Neogene to Recent times. The repeated vertical expulsion of subsurface fluids weakened the strata on the continental slope, thereby promoting mass wasting, the selective cannibalization of the paleo-seafloor, and the formation of elongated craters at the basal shear zone of the mass-transport complex. Significantly, the model presented here proves a close link between subsurface magmatic plumbing systems and mass wasting on continental margins.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To prevent transmission of, and infection with, meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), eradication treatment of colonized individuals is recommended. Throat colonization is a well-known risk factor for eradication failure. Staphylococcus aureus throat colonization is associated with colonization of the rhinopharynx, but in the currently recommended Danish MRSA eradication strategies, rhinopharynx colonization is not directly targeted. Rhinopharynx colonization could therefore be an important risk factor for prolonged MRSA throat carriage. AIM: To determine whether irrigation and wash of the rhinopharynx and mouth with dissolved mupirocin is a feasible and potentially efficacious supplementary strategy against treatment-resistant MRSA throat carriage. METHODS: The patient study was an open, non-blinded, trial including 20 treatment-resistant MRSA throat carriers. In the study, the patients received a supplementary treatment besides the standard treatment according to the Danish MRSA eradication strategy. The supplementary treatment consisted of rhinopharyngeal irrigation and mouth-gurgling twice a day for 14 days with a mupirocin ointment (22 g 2% ointment per litre of isotonic sterile saline solution) in a 37°C solution. FINDINGS: Eighteen patients (90%) complied with the treatment protocol and none ex-perienced any major adverse events. Out of the 18 patients who finished the study per protocol, 15 (83%) and seven (39%) patients had negative MRSA sampling results one and six months after end of treatment, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the feasibility and clinical potential of also targeting the rhinopharynx and oropharynx in non-systemic throat MRSA eradication strategies.

RESUMO

SSX proteins are normally restricted to spermatogenic cells, but ectopic expression can be observed in many types of human cancer. We recently demonstrated that SSX family members may contribute to tumorigenesis by modifying chromatin structure and, in specific settings, compromise chromatin stability. Here, we used normal and tumorigenic breast epithelial cell line models to further study the effect of ectopic expression of SSX2 on nuclear organization. We show that SSX2 induces the formation of a novel type of nucleoplasmic lamin bodies. Ectopic expression of SSX2 in various breast epithelial cell lines led to the formation of a previously undescribed type of intranuclear bodies containing both A and B type lamins but no other components of the nuclear lamina. SSX2-expressing cells contained a highly variable number of lamin bodies distributed throughout the nuclear space. SSX2-mediated establishment of intranuclear lamin bodies could not be linked to previous molecular interactions of SSX proteins, including polycomb proteins and the Mediator complex, but was, however, dependent on S-phase progression. These results reveal a novel interaction between SSX2 and lamins in the nucleoplasmic space. They further suggest that SSX2 promotes the formation of chromatin neighborhoods supporting the organization of lamins into nuclear bodies. We speculate that this may have implications for the organization and functional regulation of chromatin in cancer cells. Our study contributes to the further understanding of the biology of SSX proteins in tumorigenesis.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate and report the variability of radiographers in determining a patient's body type and using this to determine contrast media (CM) volumes for chest computed tomography (CT). METHODS: This prospective study recruited 50 patients undergoing chest CT examinations. Three radiographers independently used two methods to determine patient body type and consequently CM volume. In Method 1, subjective evaluation of body type together with patient weight determined CM volume. In Method 2, patient weight along with additional criteria applied by the radiographer determined CM volume. Both the determination of body type and CM volumes were compared in terms of agreement and variability between radiographers, and between methods. RESULTS: Fleiss' kappa was lower (0.583) for Method 1 when compared to Method 2 (0.926) indicating stronger agreement in the radiographer determination of body type for Method 2. Median (IQR) CM volume was 95.0 mL (85.0-110.0) for Method 1, compared to 92.5 mL (85.0-100.0) for method 2 (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Method 2 provided greater agreement in determination of body type, and reduction of CM volumes compared to Method 1. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Determining body type as part of a CT CM strategy can be subjective and enhanced methods are required to ensure that the most appropriate CM volumes are reliably used.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a spinal deformity that causes the spine to bend laterally. Patients with AIS undergo frequent X-ray examinations to monitor the progression of the disorder by through the measurement of the Cobb angle. Frequent exposure of adolescents poses the risk of radiation-induced cancer. The aim of this research was to design and build a bespoke phantom representing a 10-year-old child with AIS to allow optimisation of imaging protocols for AIS assessment through the accuracy of Cobb angle measurements. METHODS: Poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) and plaster of Paris (PoP) were used to represent human soft tissue and bone tissue, respectively, to construct a phantom exhibiting a 15° lateral curve of the spine. The phantom was validated by comparing the Hounsfield unit (HU) of its vertebrae with that of human and sheep. Additionally, comparisons of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to those from a commercially available phantom. An assessment of the accuracy of the radiographic assessment of the Cobb angle measurement was performed. RESULTS: The HU of the PoP vertebrae was 628 (SD = 56), human vertebrae was 598 (SD = 79) and sheep vertebra was 605 (SD = 83). The SNR values of the two phantoms correlated strongly (r = 0.93 (p = 0.00)). The measured scoliosis angle was 14°. CONCLUSION: The phantom has physical characteristics (in terms of spinal deformity) and radiological characteristics (in terms of HU and SNR values) of the spine of a 10-year-old child with AIS. This phantom has utility for the optimisation of x-ray imaging techniques in 10 year old children. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: A phantom to investigate new x-ray imaging techniques and technology in the assessment of scoliosis and to optimise currently used protocols.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a spinal deformity that can affect young children. It requires frequent exposure to X-rays to monitor the deformity, which can lead to the development of radiation-induced cancer later in life. The aim of this study is to test the accuracy of using scan projection radiography (SPR) in computed tomography (CT) scans for AIS assessment. This scanning mode delivers low radiation compared with conventional radiography. METHOD: A bespoke phantom with a 14° scoliotic spine was scanned in CT SPR mode using 18 imaging acquisitions. These images were visually evaluated against set criteria to determine their suitability for Cobb angle measurements Those deemed of insufficient quality were excluded from the study (n = 8, excluded). Cobb angle measurements were then performed on the remaining images (n = 10, included) by 13 observers. RESULTS: On average, the difference between the measured Cobb angle and the known angle was -2.75° (SD 1.46°). The agreement between the observers was good (p = 0.861, 95% CI 0.70-0.95) and comparable to similar studies on other imaging modalities which are used for Cobb angle estimation. CONCLUSION: CT SPR images can be used for AIS assessment with the 5° margin of error that is clinically acceptable. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The outcome is promising for patients and health providers because it provides an opportunity to reduce patient dose, achieve clinically acceptable Cobb angle measurements whilst using existing (CT) technology that is available in most hospital.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The focus on paediatric radiation dose reduction supports reevaluation of paediatric imaging protocols. This is particularly important in the neonates where chest radiographs are frequently requested to assess respiratory illness and line placement. This study aims to assess the impact of neonatal chest radiographic protocols on patient dose in four hospitals in different countries. METHODS: Exposure parameters, collimation, focus to skin distance (FSD) and radiation dose from 200 neonatal chest radiographs were registered prospectively. Inclusion criteria consisted of both premature and full-term neonates weighing between 1000 and 5000 g. Only data from the examinations meeting diagnostic criteria and approved for the clinical use were included. Radiation dose was assessed using dose area product (DAP). RESULTS: The lowest DAP value (4.58 mGy cm2) was recorded in the Norwegian hospital, employing a high kVp, low mAs protocol using a DR system. The Canadian hospital recorded the highest DAP (9.48), using lower kVp and higher mAs with a CR system, including the addition of a lateral projection. The difference in the mean DAP, weight, field of view (FOV) and kVp between the hospitals is statistically significant (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Use of non-standardised imaging protocols in neonatal chest radiography results in differences in patient dose across hospitals included in the study. Using higher kVp, lower mAs and reducing the number of lateral projections to clinically relevant indications result in a lower DAP measured in the infant sample studied. Further studies to examine image quality based on exposure factors and added filtration are recommended. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Reevaluation of paediatric imaging protocols presents an opportunity to reduce patient dose in a population with increased sensitivity to ionising radiation.

RESUMO

Neurones that lose their presynaptic partners because of injury usually retract or die. However, when the auditory interneurones of the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus are denervated, dendrites respond by growing across the midline and forming novel synapses with the opposite auditory afferents. Suppression subtractive hybridization was used to detect transcriptional changes 3 days after denervation. This is a stage at which we demonstrate robust compensatory dendritic sprouting. Whereas 49 unique candidates were down-regulated, no sufficiently up-regulated candidates were identified at this time point. Several candidates identified in this study are known to influence the translation and degradation of proteins in other systems. The potential role of these factors in the compensatory sprouting of cricket auditory interneurones in response to denervation is discussed.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Scoliosis is defined as a deformity of the spine with lateral curvature in the coronal plane. It requires regular X-ray imaging to monitor the progress of the disorder, therefore scoliotic patients are frequently exposed to radiation. It is important to lower the risk from these exposures for young patients. The aim of this work is to compare organ dose (OD) values resulting from Scan Projection Radiograph (SPR) mode in CT against projection radiography and EOS® imaging system when assessing scoliosis. METHODS: A dosimetry phantom was used to represent a 10-year old child. Thermoluminescent dosimetry detectors were used for measuring OD. The phantom was imaged with CT in SPR mode using 27 imaging parameters; projection radiography and EOS machines using local scoliosis imaging procedures. Imaging was performed in anteroposterior, posteroanterior and lateral positions. RESULTS: 17 protocols delivered significantly lower radiation dose than projection radiography (p < 0.05). OD values from the CT SPR imaging protocols and projection radiography were statistically significant higher than the results from EOS. No statistically significant differences in OD were observed between 10 imaging protocols and those from projection radiography and EOS imaging protocols (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: EOS has the lowest dose. Where this technology is not available we suggest there is a potential for OD reduction in scoliosis imaging using CT SPR compared to projection radiography. Further work is required to investigate image quality in relation to the measurement of Cobb angle with CT SPR.

RESUMO

Knowledge of risk factors for canine obesity is an important pre-requisite of effective preventative strategies. This study aimed to investigate risk factors for canine obesity in adult companion dogs across Zealand, Denmark. Client-owned dogs (>2 years of age and without chronic illness) were recruited and examined at eight companion animal veterinary practices in areas with varying socio-economic characteristics. The body condition score (BCS) of the dogs was examined by two investigators based on a 9-point scoring scheme. Dog owners answered a questionnaire that had prompts regarding: 1) dog characteristics, including neuter status, 2) owner characteristics, 3) feeding and exercise practices and 4) the owners' attachment to the dog. The effect of these factors on BCS and the risk of being heavy/obese (BCS scores 7-9) were analysed in two separate analyses. A total of 268 dogs were included in the analysis, of which 20.5% were found to be heavy/obese. The average BCS was 5.46. In terms of dog characteristics, neutering dramatically increased both BCS and the risk of being heavy/obese in male dogs but not in bitches. BCS and the risk of being heavy/obese increased in senior bitches and decreased in senior male dogs. The risk of being heavy/obese was higher in dogs with overweight and obese owners. Regarding feeding and exercise practices, providing only one meal per day increased BCS and risk of being heavy/obese. Treats during relaxation increased the risk of dogs being heavy/obese. It also increased the dogs' BCS, but only if the owners were overweight or obese. An increased duration of daily walking increased the risk of the dog being heavy/obese, but only if the owner was overweight or obese. Allowing the dog to run free in the garden/property decreased the risk of the dog being heavy/obese. The owners' attachment to the dog was not associated with the dogs' BCS or dogs' being heavy/obese. An important and novel finding was that neutering increased the risk of being overweight or obese for male dogs while bitches were at risk irrespective of neuter status. Furthermore, a complex interaction between owners' weight status, feeding practices and the risk of dogs being overweight or obese was found, which stresses the need to consider companion animal obesity from a One Health perspective in future prospective studies. Finally, this study was unable to confirm that canine obesity is a product of owners being too attached to their dogs.
