RESUMO

Glucocorticoids induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (GIONFH) is a devastating orthopedic disease. Previous studies suggested that connexin43 is involved in the process of osteogenesis and angiogenesis. However, the role of Cx43 potentiates in the osteogenesis and angiogenesis of bone marrow-derived stromal stem cells (BMSCs) in GIONFH is still not investigated. In this study, BMSCs were isolated and transfected with green fluorescent protein or the fusion gene encoding GFP and Cx43. The osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs were detected after transfected with Cx43. In addition, the migration abilities and angiogenesis of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were been detected after induced by transfected BMSCs supernatants in vitro. Finally, we established GC-ONFH rat model, then, a certain amount of transfected or controlled BMSCs were injected into the tibia of the rats. Immunohistological staining and micro-CT scanning results showed that the transplanted experiment group had significantly promoted more bone regeneration and vessel volume when compared with the effects of the negative or control groups. This study demonstrated for the first time that the Cx43 overexpression in BMSCs could promote bone regeneration as seen in the osteogenesis and angiogenesis process, suggesting that Cx43 may serve as a therapeutic gene target for GIONFH treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cyperus stoloniferus is an important species in coastal ecosystems and possesses economic and ecological value. To elucidate the structural characteristics, variation, and evolution of the organelle genome of C. stoloniferus, we sequenced, assembled, and compared its mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes. RESULTS: We assembled the mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes of C. stoloniferus. The total length of the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) was 927,413 bp, with a GC content of 40.59%. It consists of two circular DNAs, including 37 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, and five rRNAs. The length of the chloroplast genome (cpDNA) was 186,204 bp, containing 93 PCGs, 40 tRNAs, and 8 rRNAs. The mtDNA and cpDNA contained 81 and 129 tandem repeats, respectively, and 346 and 1,170 dispersed repeats, respectively, both of which have 270 simple sequence repeats. The third high-frequency codon (RSCU > 1) in the organellar genome tended to end at A or U, whereas the low-frequency codon (RSCU < 1) tended to end at G or C. The RNA editing sites of the PCGs were relatively few, with only 9 and 23 sites in the mtDNA and cpDNA, respectively. A total of 28 mitochondrial plastid DNAs (MTPTs) in the mtDNA were derived from cpDNA, including three complete trnT-GGU, trnH-GUG, and trnS-GCU. Phylogeny and collinearity indicated that the relationship between C. stoloniferus and C. rotundus are closest. The mitochondrial rns gene exhibited the greatest nucleotide variability, whereas the chloroplast gene with the greatest nucleotide variability was infA. Most PCGs in the organellar genome are negatively selected and highly evolutionarily conserved. Only six mitochondrial genes and two chloroplast genes exhibited Ka/Ks > 1; in particular, atp9, atp6, and rps7 may have undergone potential positive selection. CONCLUSION: We assembled and validated the mtDNA of C. stoloniferus, which contains a 15,034 bp reverse complementary sequence. The organelle genome sequence of C. stoloniferus provides valuable genomic resources for species identification, evolution, and comparative genomic research in Cyperaceae.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Crowe IV developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a catastrophic hip disease. Moreover, obtaining ideal clinical efficacy in conventional total hip arthroplasty (THA) is often difficult. In this study, we aimed to assess the mid-term clinical results of THA with porous tantalum trabecular metal (TM) pads for acetabular reconstruction in the treatment of Crowe IV DDH. METHODS: A cohort of 28 patients (32 hips) diagnosed with Crowe type IV DDH who underwent acetabular reconstruction during THA using TM pads with scheduled follow-up between 2011 and 2018, were included in this study. Eight cases were men and 24 were women, with a mean age of 48.4 years (range, 36-72 years) and a mean follow-up was 74.3 months (range, 42-132 months). All patients underwent acetabular reconstruction using TM pads and total hip replacement with subtrochanteric osteotomy. RESULTS: At the final follow-up, 28 hips (87.5%) demonstrated mild or no postoperative limping. The Harris Hip Score improved from 58.4 ± 10.6 preoperatively to 85.6 ± 8.9. The mean pain, stiffness, and function scores on the Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis index were 86.5 ± 10.2, 87.3 ± 12.4 and 85.4 ± 11.6 respectively. The mean score of patient satisfaction was 90.4 ± 7.6. Additionally, the SF-12 physical summary score was 41.8 ± 5.6 and the SF-12 mental summary score was 51.6 ± 5.4. TM construct survivorship due to all-cause failure was 90.6% at 5 years with 3 hips at risk, 87.5% at 10 years with 4 hips at risk. The survivorship due to failure from aseptic loosening was 96.9% at 5 years with 1hips at risk and 93.75% at 10 years with 2 hips at risk. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated satisfactory mid-term clinical and radiological results with the application of TM pads for acetabular reconstruction combined with THA in patients with Crowe IV DDH. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Whether artificial bone provides comparable outcomes to autogenous bone has not been determined for osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). This study was conducted to compare the clinical outcomes of autogenous and artificial bone grafting (demineralized bone matrix/calcium sulfate [DBM/CaS]) through a modified lightbulb technique by percutaneous femoral neck-head fenestration for treating precollapse ONFH. METHODS: A total of 73 Association Research Circulation Osseous Stage Ⅱ ONFH patients (81 hips) who had a mean follow-up of 61 months (range, 52 to 74) were included in this retrospective study. Among them were 40 hips treated with autogenous bone and 41 hips treated with DBM/CaS grafting through the percutaneous femoral neck-head fenestration. The Harris scores, radiographic progressions, clinical success rates, and survival analyses were analyzed. RESULTS: At final follow-up, the mean Harris score was 80 points (range, 63 to 92) in the DBM/CaS group and 76 points (range, 69 to 91) in the autogenous bone group (P = .751). The radiographic progression rate was 29.9% in the DBM/CaS group, without significant difference from the autogenous bone group, which was 37.5% (P = .43). About 73.2% of patients in the DBM/CaS group and 75% in the autologous bone group avoided a total hip arthroplasty (P = .85). Survival analysis for femoral head protection revealed similar outcomes between the 2 groups (P > .05). CONCLUSION: Percutaneous femoral neck-head fenestration combined with artificial bone (DBM/CaS) grafting had comparable clinical outcomes to autologous bone grafting on preventing femoral head collapse and rescuing THA at a mean of 61-month follow-up for treating early ONFH.

RESUMO

Magnetic levitation (MagLev) is a promising density-based analytical technique with numerous applications. Several MagLev structures with different levels of sensitivity and range have been studied. However, these MagLev structures can seldom satisfy the different performance requirements simultaneously, such as high sensitivity, wide measurement range, and easy operation, which have prevented them from being widely used. In this work, a tunable MagLev system was developed. It is confirmed by numerical simulation and experiments that this system possesses a high resolution down to 10-7 g/cm3 or even higher compared to the existing systems. Meanwhile, the resolution and range of this tunable system can be adjusted to meet different requirements of measurement. More importantly, this system can be operated simply and conveniently. This bundle of characteristics demonstrates that the novel tunable MagLev system could be handily applied in various density-based analyses on demand, which would greatly expand the ability of MagLev technology.

RESUMO

Excitons in atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been established as an attractive platform to explore polaritonic physics, owing to their enormous binding energies and giant oscillator strength. Basic spectral features of exciton polaritons in TMD microcavities, thus far, were conventionally explained via two-coupled-oscillator models. This ignores, however, the impact of phonons on the polariton energy structure. Here we establish and quantify the threefold coupling between excitons, cavity photons, and phonons. For this purpose, we employ energy-momentum-resolved photoluminescence and spatially resolved coherent two-dimensional spectroscopy to investigate the spectral properties of a high-quality-factor microcavity with an embedded WSe_{2} van der Waals heterostructure at room temperature. Our approach reveals a rich multibranch structure which thus far has not been captured in previous experiments. Simulation of the data reveals hybridized exciton-photon-phonon states, providing new physical insight into the exciton polariton system based on layered TMDs.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Ventricular assist devices (VADs) are considered an effective treatment for patients with advanced heart failure, while complications associated with blood damage remain a burden. Structure design innovation has the potential to reduce hemolysis and improve hemocompatibility. METHODS: In this research, a novel mixed-flow blood pump that integrates structural features of the axial and centrifugal VADs was proposed. The pump consists of an inducer, a mixed impeller supported by two ceramic pivot bearings, and a volute. The flow field and laminar viscous shear stress were analyzed by the in silico simulation. The hydraulic and hemolytic performance were evaluated in vitro by using a 3D printed pump. RESULTS: The flow field distribution showed that streamlines in the connection area were smoothly transitioned through structural integration and no irregular flow occurred in the entire flow channel. The axial blades work as a fluid accelerator (generating 18.56% of the energy), and the centrifugal blades provide the main pressure head. The proportion of fluid inside the pump exposed to low laminar viscous shear stress (<50 Pa) and high laminar viscous shear stress (>150 Pa) was 99.02% and 0.03%, respectively. The in vitro hemolysis test results showed that the NIH (Normalized Index of Hemolysis) value of the mixed pump is 0.0079 ± 0.0039 g/100 L (n = 6). CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that the mixed flow structure is effective at improving hydraulic performance, eliminating flow disturbance, and minimizing shear stresses. This novel pump design is expected to provide a new direction for the development of next-generation VADs.

RESUMO

Ventriculoatrial shunts are the most common second-line procedure for cases in which ventriculoperitoneal shunts are unsuitable. Shunting-associated thrombosis is a potentially life-threatening complication after ventriculoatrial shunt insertion. The overall prevalence of this complication is still controversial because of substantial differences in the numbers found in studies using clinical data and in those analyzing postmortem findings. The etiology of thrombosis may be multifactorial, including shunt catheter itself, contents of cerebrospinal fluid, shunt infection, and genetic disorder. The clinical presentation can vary widely, ranging from asymptomatic to a life-threatening condition. Timely recognition of thromboembolic lesions is critical for treatment. However, early diagnosis and management is still challenging because of a relatively long asymptomatic latency and lack of clear guideline recommendations. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of ventriculoatrial shunt thrombosis, especially to focus on its etiopathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

RESUMO

The deposition of PM2.5 (fine particulate matter in air with diameter smaller than 2.5 µm) in lungs is harmful to human health. However, real-time observation on the deposition of particles in the acinar area of the lung is still a challenge in experiments. Here, a fluorescent imaging method is developed to visualize the deposition process with a high temporal and spatial resolution. The observations reveal that the deposition pattern is nonuniform, and the maximum deposition rate in the acinar area differs significantly from the prediction of the widely used average deposition model. The method is also used to find single particles in the kidney and liver, though such particles are commonly believed to be too large to enter the extrapulmonary organs.

RESUMO

Glucocorticoid (GC)-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (GC-ONFH) is considered as one of the most serious side effects of long-term or over-dose steroid therapy. However, the underlying cause mechanisms are still not fully investigated. We firstly established a rat model of GC-ONFH and injected lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and methylprednisolone (MPS). We found that the expressions of Cx43, Runx2, ALP and COLⅠ were more decreased than the normal group. Secondly, the isolated rat bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs) were treated with dexamethasone (Dex) in vitro, and the expressions of Cx43, Runx2, ALP and COLⅠ were decreased significantly. Moreover, the results of immunofluorescence staining, alizarin red staining, EdU assay and CCK8 showed that the osteogenic differentiation and the proliferation capacity of BMSCs were decreased after induced by Dex. A plasmid of lentivirus-mediated Cx43 (Lv-Cx43) gene overexpression was established to investigate the function of Cx43 in BMSCs under the Dex treatment. Findings demonstrated that the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation abilities were enhanced after Lv-Cx43 transfected to BMSCs, and these beneficial effects of Lv-Cx43 were significantly blocked when PD988059 (an inhibitor of ERK1/2) was used. In conclusion, the overexpression of Cx43 could promote the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs via activating the ERK1/2 signalling pathway, which provide a basic evidence for further study on the detailed function of Cx43 in GC-ONFH.

RESUMO

Small all-optical devices are central to the optical computing. Plasmonic digital encoders (PDEs) with a featured dimension of ∼1µm hold the key for transferring information from far field to photonic processing systems. Here we propose a PDE design composed of two gold nanorods (AuNRs), whose pattern represents 2-bit digital information. We implanted information into the spectral phase of a femtosecond pulse by pulse shaping and controlled the two-photon photoluminescence pattern of an AuNR pair. The high contrast ratios were achieved with 13.01 and 6.02 dB for binary codes "1-0" and "0-1", respectively.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Periarticular infiltration analgesia (PIA) is widely used to control postoperative pain in patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of adding corticosteroids to the PIA cocktail for pain management in patients who underwent TKA. METHODS: The patients were randomized to the corticosteroid or control group (double-blind). The patients in the corticosteroid group received a periarticular infiltration of an analgesic cocktail of ropivacaine, epinephrine, and dexamethasone. Dexamethasone was omitted from the cocktail in the control group. The primary outcomes were postoperative pain [assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS)], time until the administration of first rescue analgesia, morphine consumption, and postoperative inflammatory biomarkers [C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6)]. The secondary outcomes were functional recovery, assessed by the range of knee motion, quadriceps strength, and daily ambulation distance. The tertiary outcomes included postoperative adverse effects. RESULTS: The patients in the corticosteroid group had significantly lower resting VAS scores at 6 and 12 h after surgery, lower VAS scores during motion up to 24 h after surgery, and lower levels of inflammatory biomarkers. All the differences in the VAS scores between the two groups did not reach the point to be considered clinically significant. The additional use of corticosteroid significantly prolonged analgesic effects and led to lower rescue morphine consumption. The patients in the corticosteroid group had significantly better functional recovery on the first day after surgery. The two groups had a similar occurrence of adverse effects. CONCLUSIONS: Adding corticosteroids to an analgesic cocktail for PIA could lightly improve early pain relief and accelerate recovery in the first 24 h after TKA. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Randomized controlled trial, Level I.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore the efficacy of two unique combinations of nerve blocks on postoperative pain and functional outcome after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). METHODS: Patients scheduled for TKA were randomized to receive a combination of adductor canal block (ACB) + infiltration between the popliteal artery and capsule of the posterior knee block (IPACK) + sham obturator nerve block (ONB) + sham lateral femoral cutaneous nerve block (LFCNB) (control group), or a combination of ACB + IPACK + ONB + sham LFCNB (triple nerve block group), or a combination of ACB + IPACK + ONB + LFCNB (quadruple nerve block group). All patients received local infiltration analgesia. Primary outcome was postoperative morphine consumption. Secondary outcomes were the time until first rescue analgesia, postoperative pain assessed on the visual analog scale (VAS), QoR-15 score, functional recovery of knee, and postoperative complications. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the triple and quadruple nerve block groups showed significantly lower postoperative morphine consumption (17.2 ± 9.7 mg vs. 11.2 ± 7.0 mg vs. 11.4 ± 6.4 mg, P = .001). These two groups also showed significantly longer time until first rescue analgesia (P = .007 and .010, respectively, analyzed with Kaplan-Meier method), significantly lower VAS scores on postoperative day 1 (P < .01), significantly better QoR-15 scores on postoperative days 1 and 2 (P < .001), and significantly better functional recovery of knee including range of motion (P = .002 and .001 on postoperative days 1 and 2), and daily ambulation distance (P < .001 and P = .004 on postoperative days 1 and 2). However, the absolute change in morphine consumption, VAS scores, and QoR-15 scores did not exceed the reported minimal clinically important differences (MCIDs) (morphine consumption: 10 mg; VAS scores: 1.5 at rest and 1.8 during movement; QoR-15 scores: 8.0). The MCIDs of other outcomes have not been reported in literature. The triple and quadruple nerve block groups showed no significant differences in these outcomes between each other. The three groups did not show a significant difference in complication rates. CONCLUSION: Adding ONB or ONB + LFCNB to ACB + IPACK can statistically reduce morphine consumption, improve early pain relief, and functional recovery. However, the absolute change in morphine consumption, VAS scores, and QoR-15 scores did not exceed the MCIDs. Based on our findings and considering the sample size of this study, there is not enough clinical evidence to support the triple or quadruple nerve block use within a multimodal analgesic pathway after TKA.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The optimal route for dexamethasone (DEX) administration regimen for patients undergoing primary TKA has not been investigated. This study aims to determine whether intravenous and topical DEX provide different clinical effects in patients with TKA. METHODS: In this double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial, 90 patients undergoing primary TKA were randomized to intravenous DEX group (n = 45) or topical DEX group (n = 45, DEX applied in anesthetic cocktail for periarticular injection). The primary outcome was postoperative VAS pain score and morphine consumption. Secondary outcomes were included knee swelling, knee flexion, and extension angle, Knee Society Score (KSS), and postoperative hospital stays. Tertiary outcomes assessed the blood-related metrics, including inflammatory biomarkers and fibrinolysis parameters. Finally, nausea and vomiting and other adverse events were compared. RESULTS: The topical administration of DEX provide lower pain score at 2h, 8h, 12h at rest (P < .05) and 12h, 24h with activity (P < .05), and less knee swelling in the first postoperative day (P < .05), while intravenous DEX was more effective in decreasing blood inflammatory biomarkers, including C-reactive protein (CRP) at postoperative 24h (P < .05) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) at postoperative 24h, 48h (P < .05), and reducing postoperative nausea (P < .05) for patients receiving TKA. However, there was no significant difference in knee flexion and extension angle, KSS, postoperative hospital stays, and complications occurrence (P > .05) between intravenous and topical DEX after TKA. CONCLUSION: Topical administration of DEX provided better clinical outcomes on postoperative pain management and knee swelling early after TKA, while intravenous DEX was more effective in decreasing blood inflammatory biomarkers and preventing postoperative nausea.

RESUMO

Many nanotechnology materials rely on a hierarchical structure ranging from the nanometer scale to the micrometer scale. Their interplay determines the nanoscale optical coherence length, which plays a key role in energy transport and radiative decay and, thus, the optoelectronic applications. However, it is challenging to detect optical coherence length in multiscale structures with existing methods. Techniques such as atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy are not sensitive to optical coherence length. Linear absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy methods, on the other hand, were generally limited by inhomogeneous broadening, which often obstructs the determination of nanoscale coherence length. Here, we carry out coherent two-dimensional microspectroscopy to obtain a map of the local optical coherence length within a hierarchically structured molecular film. Interestingly, the nanoscale coherence length is found to correlate with microscale topography, suggesting a perspective for controlling structural coherence on molecular length scales by appropriate microscopic growth conditions.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether adductor canal block (ACB) combined with lateral femoral cutaneous nerve block (LFCNB) could improve the efficacy of post-operative analgesia in a comparison with a standard peri-articular infiltration analgesia (PIA) after a total knee arthroplasty (TKA). METHODS: One hundred and sixty patients of scheduled unilateral primary TKA were randomly allocated into two groups for post-operative analgesia. Eighty cases were treated with ACB combined with LFCNB and the other eighty treated with PIA. The primary outcomes were pain visual analogue scale (VAS) and rescue pain killer consumption, and the secondary outcomes were knee active range of motion (ROM), quadriceps strength, patients' ambulation ability, Knee Society Score (KSS), length of hospital stay, and adverse events. RESULTS: We found that ACB combined with LFCNB was better on decreasing the post-operative pain score within 12 hours at rest and 8 h with activity (p < 0.05) and provided longer duration of analgesia (19.91 ± 5.09 VS 12.06 ± 3.67 h, p < 0.01) and less rescue morphine consumption (13.63 ± 9.84 vs 18.00 ± 11.52 mg, p = 0.011) than the PIA. There was no significant difference between the two groups (p > 0.05) in terms of knee ROM, quadriceps strength, daily mobilization distance, KSS, and complication occurrence. CONCLUSIONS: ACB combined with LFCNB provides a significantly better pain control, less opioid consumption, and longer duration of analgesia than peri-articular infiltration while preserving muscle function without affecting knee functional recovery nor the length of stay or side effects occurrence.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Opioid use is prevalent in the general population. This systematic review and meta-analysis sought to evaluate whether it affects patient-reported outcomes (PROs) following total hip or knee arthroplasty. METHODS: The following databases were systematically searched on February 5, 2020: Medline, Embase (Ovid), Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. Studies were included if they compared patients who received opioids or not before total hip or knee arthroplasty. Outcomes of interest were rates of post-operative revision, peri-prosthetic infection, and readmission. RESULTS: Ten retrospective studies were included for review. Pre-operative opioid use was identified as a risk factor for post-operative revision [odds ratio (OR) 1.58, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.15-1.73, p<0.01], peri-prosthetic infection (OR 1.36, 95% CI 1.08-1.71, p=0.01), and readmission (OR 1.41, 95% CI 1.20-1.75, p<0.01). CONCLUSION: The available evidence indicates that pre-operative opioid use increases the risk of adverse outcomes following total hip or knee arthroplasty. Orthopedic physicians should consider these risks when treating their patients.

RESUMO

Cutin and wax are the main precursors of the cuticle that covers the aerial parts of plants and provide protection against biotic and abiotic stresses. Long-chain acyl-CoA synthetases (LACSs) play diversified roles in the synthesis of cutin, wax, and triacylglycerol (TAG). Most of the information concerned with LACS functions is obtained from model plants, whereas the roles of LACS genes in Glycine max are less known. Here, we have identified 19 LACS genes in Glycine max, an important crop plant, and further focused our attention on 4 LACS2 genes (named as GmLACS2-1, 2, 3, 4, respectively). These GmLACS2 genes display different expression patterns in various organs and also show different responses to abiotic stresses, implying that these genes might play diversified functions during plant growth and against stresses. To further identify the role of GmLACS2-3, greatly induced by abiotic stresses, we transformed a construct containing its full length of coding sequence into Arabidopsis. The expression of GmLACS2-3 in an Arabidopsis atlacs2 mutant greatly suppressed its phenotype, suggesting it plays conserved roles with that of AtLACS2. The overexpression of GmLACS2-3 in wild-type plants significantly increased the amounts of cutin and suberin but had little effect on wax amounts, indicating the specific role of GmLACS2-3 in the synthesis of cutin and suberin. In addition, these GmLACS2-3 overexpressing plants showed enhanced drought tolerance. Taken together, our study deepens our understanding of the functions of LACS genes in different plants and also provides a clue for cultivating crops with strong drought resistance.

RESUMO

Lupeol, a natural lupane-type pentacyclic triterpene, possesses various pharmacological properties, and its production attracts attention. Significant quantities of lupeol are deposited on the castor aerial organ surface and are easily extractable as a predominant wax constituent. Thus, castor might be considered as a potential bioreactor for the production of lupeol. The lupeol biosynthesis pathway is well known, but how it is regulated remains largely unknown. Among large numbers of castor cultivars, we targeted one accession line (337) with high levels of lupeol on its stem surface and low levels thereof on its hypocotyl surface, implicating that lupeol synthesis is differentially regulated in the two organs. To explore the underlying mechanisms, we did comparative transcriptome analysis of the first internode of 337 stem and the upper hypocotyl. Our results show that large amounts of auxin-related genes are differentially expressed in both parts, implying some possible interactions between auxin and lupeol production. We also found that several auxin-responsive cis-elements are present in promoter regions of HMGR and LUS genes encoding two key enzymes involved in lupeol production. Furthermore, auxin treatments apparently induced the expression levels of RcHMGR and RcLUS. Furthermore, we observed that auxin treatment significantly increased lupeol contents, whereas inhibiting auxin transport led to an opposite phenotype. Our study reveals some relationships between hormone activity and lupeol synthesis and might provide a promising way for improving lupeol yields in castor.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To understand the characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer in a specific geographical region. METHODS: The retrospective study was conducted at the Affiliated Hospital of Inner Mongolia Medical University, China, and comprised clinical and pathological data of patients with gastric cancer treated from 2007 to 2017. Data was analysed according to the patients' ethnicity, gender, age, tumour location, differentiation degree, Bormann classification, tumour-nodes-metastases staging and pathological type. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS 22. RESULTS: Of the 2,049 patients, 1619(79.01%) were males and 430(20.99%) were females. The overall mean age of the sample was 60.94±10.90 years. The incidence of gastric antrum was the highest, with 830(40.51%) cases. The proportion of gastric cancers was different in different age groups (p=0.001). Of the total, 922(45%) cases were poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. There were significant differences in the histological types of gastric cancer in different age groups (p=0.001). There were 130(6.3%) cases of Mongolian patients, and the composition ratio of each age group was not significantly different from that of Han ethnicity (p>0.05). However, location was different with 55(42.31%) cases involving oesophago-gastric junction. CONCLUSIONS: The diagnostic rate of gastric cancer in Western Inner Mongolia was relatively low. The incidence of gastric cancer among both Mongolian and Han patients was higher in elderly men. The incidence of gastric antrum was dominant in Han patients, followed by oesophago-gastric junction, while the reverse was true of Mongolian patients.
