RESUMO

The present study aimed to address the capability of the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus rhamnosus IMC 501® to survive in seawater and the ability of Artemia metanauplii to incorporate it, as well as to analyse the potential effect of the probiotic as a control agent for potentially pathogenic Vibrionaceae bacteria in Artemia. The results demonstrate the ability of L. rhamnosus IMC 501® to survive in seawater for up to 30 h. They also advocate their capability to be efficiently incorporated into Artemia metanauplii at concentrations of 104  CFU per Artemia after 30 min of suspension in probiotic solution, thereby promoting a 1-log reduction in Vibrionaceae levels after 3 h. These low levels of Vibrio bacteria were maintained for about 30 min after transfer into clear seawater, a sufficient time for Artemia to be ingested by aquatic organisms. These results contribute to broaden the knowledge on the suitability of probiotics as sustainable alternatives for the prevention/reduction of diseases in aquaculture facilities.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the principal causes of death in antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-(ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the mortality and it's causes and CVD and its vascular risk factors (VRFs) in AAV patients in Andalusia. METHODS: A multicenter cohort of 220 AAV patients followed-up from 1979 until June 2020 was studied in Andalussia, south of Spain. The information, including socio-demographic and clinical data was recorded retrospectively through chart review. Data was analysed using Chi2, ANOVA and Cox proportional hazards regresion as uni and multivariate test with a 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: During a mean ± standard deviation follow-up of 96.79 ± 75.83 months, 51 patients died and 30 presented at least one CVE. Independent prognostic factors of mortality were age (HR 1.083, p=0.001) and baseline creatinine (HR 4.41, p=0.01). Independent prognostic factors of CVE were age [hazard ratio (HR) 1.042, p=0.005] and the presence of hypertension (HTN) six months after diagnosis (HR 4.641, p=0.01). HTN, diabetes and renal failure, all of these important VRFs, are more prevalent in AAV patients than it is described in matched general population. CONCLUSIONS: Age and baseline renal function, but not CVEs, are predictors of mortality and age and early HTN are independent predictors for having a CVE. CVD screening in AAV patients is demanded.

RESUMO

G+0.693-0.03 is a quiescent molecular cloud located within the Sagittarius B2 (Sgr B2) star-forming complex. Recent spectral surveys have shown that it represents one of the most prolific repositories of complex organic species in the Galaxy. The origin of such chemical complexity, along with the small-scale physical structure and properties of G+0.693-0.03, remains a mystery. In this paper, we report the study of multiple molecules with interferometric observations in combination with single-dish data in G+0.693-0.03. Despite the lack of detection of continuum source, we find small-scale (0.2 pc) structures within this cloud. The analysis of the molecular emission of typical shock tracers such as SiO, HNCO, and CH3OH unveiled two molecular components, peaking at velocities of 57 and 75 km s-1. They are found to be interconnected in both space and velocity. The position-velocity diagrams show features that match with the observational signatures of a cloud-cloud collision. Additionally, we detect three series of class I methanol masers known to appear in shocked gas, supporting the cloud-cloud collision scenario. From the maser emission we provide constraints on the gas kinetic temperatures (∼30-150 K) and H2 densities (104-105 cm-2). These properties are similar to those found for the starburst galaxy NGC253 also using class I methanol masers, suggested to be associated with a cloud-cloud collision. We conclude that shocks driven by the possible cloud-cloud collision is likely the most important mechanism responsible for the high level of chemical complexity observed in G+0.693-0.03.

RESUMO

AIMS: To develop a SYBR Green quantitative real-time PCR protocol enabling detection and quantification of a fish probiotic and two turbot pathogenic Vibrio spp. in microcosms. METHODS AND RESULTS: Phaeobacter 27-4, Vibrio anguillarum 90-11-287 and Vibrio splendidus DMC-1 were quantified as pure and mixed cultures and in presence of microalgae (Isochrysis galbana), rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis), Artemia nauplii or turbot (Psetta maxima) larvae by real-time PCR based on primers directed at genetic loci coding for antagonistic and virulence-related functions respectively. The optimized protocol was used to study bioencapsulation and maintenance of the probiont and pathogens in rotifers and for the detection and quantification of Phaeobacter and V. anguillarum in turbot larvae fed rotifers loaded with the different bacteria in a challenge trial. CONCLUSIONS: Our real-time PCR protocol is reproducible and specific. The method requires separate standard curve for each host organism and can be used to detect and quantify probiotic Phaeobacter and pathogenic Vibrio bioencapsulated in rotifers and in turbot larvae. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Our method allows monitoring and quantification of a turbot larvae probiotic bacteria and turbot pathogenic vibrios in in vivo trials and will be useful tools for detecting the bacteria in industrial rearing units.

RESUMO

We present interferometric observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) of the free-free continuum and recombination line emission at 1 and 3 mm of the "Red Square Nebula" surrounding the B[e]-type star MWC922. The unknown distance to the source is usually taken to be d=1.7-3 kpc. The unprecedented angular resolution ( up to ∼ 0 . ″ 02 ) and exquisite sensitivity of these data unveil, for the first time, the structure and kinematics of the emerging, compact ionized region at its center. We imaged the line emission of H30α and H39α, previously detected with single-dish observations, as well as of H51ϵ, H55γ, and H63δ, detected for the first time in this work. The line emission is seen over a full velocity range of ~180 km s-1 arising in a region of diameter < 0 . ″ 14 (less than a few hundred au) in the maser line H30α, which is the most intense transition reported here. We resolve the spatio-kinematic structure of a nearly edge-on disk rotating around a central mass of ~10 M ⊙ (d=1.7 kpc) or ~18 M ⊙ (d=3 kpc), assuming Keplerian rotation. Our data also unveil a fast (~100 km s-1) bipolar ejection (a jet?) orthogonal to the disk. In addition, a slow (<15 km s-1) wind may be lifting off the disk. Both, the slow and the fast winds are found to be rotating in a similar manner to the ionized layers of the disk. This represents the first empirical proof of rotation in a bipolar wind expanding at high velocity (~100 km s-1 ). The launching radius of the fast wind is found to be <30-51 au i.e., smaller than the inner rim of the ionized disk probed by our observations. We believe that the fast wind is actively being launched, probably by a disk-mediated mechanism in a (accretion?) disk around a possible compact companion. We have modelled our observations using the radiative transfer code MORELI. This has enabled us to describe with unparalleled detail the physical conditions and kinematics in the inner layers of MWC 922, which has revealed itself as an ideal laboratory for studying the interplay of disk rotation and jet-launching. Although the nature of MWC 922 remains unclear, we believe it could be a ~15 M ⊙ post-main sequence star in a mass-exchanging binary system. If this is the case, a more realistic value of the distance may be d~3 kpc.

RESUMO

The Mar Menor is a coastal lagoon increasingly threatened by urban and agricultural pressures. The main watercourse draining into the lagoon is the Rambla del Albujón. A fortnightly campaign carried out over one annual cycle enabled us to characterize the treated urban sewage effluents and agricultural sources which contribute to the nutrient fluxes in the watercourse. Multivariate analysis provided information for establishing chemical signatures and for assessing the relative influence of the various sources on the water quality at the outlet. Mass balances were used to examine net gains and losses, and cross-correlations with rainfall to analyze climatic influence and control factors in the trends of the nutrient flux. The rainfall pattern was significantly cross-correlated with nitrate and phosphorus fluxes from agricultural sources, while fluctuations in the resident population explained the phosphorus flux trend in urban sources. 50% of dissolved inorganic nitrogen was from agricultural sources, while 70% of total phosphate and 91% of total organic carbon were from urban point sources. The net amounts of all the nutrients fell as a result of plant uptake and/or denitrification in the channel. The control of urban point sources (phosphorus-enriched) is suggested as a promptly action for improving the health of the coastal lagoon.

RESUMO

Four Lactobacillus species were studied for their ability to grow at high NaCl concentrations and different initial pH values. Lactobacillus plantarum 541 and A6 could ferment glucose and produce lactic acid in the presence of 8% salt in the medium. For strain 541, the specific rate of lactate production (q(lac)) and the yield of lactic acid relative to substrate (Y(p/s)) remained constant, whereas the yield of biomass relative to substrate (Y(x/s)) decreased up to 6% salt. In contrast, for strain A6, Y(p/s) decreased up to 6% salt whereas Y(x/s) did not vary markedly. Combined effects of salt and pH studied through a factorial design did not show significant interaction between salt and pH. The pH was the dominant factor in glucose fermentation for both the strains. Considering overall performance, 4% salt and pH between 6.0 and 6.6 can be taken as appropriate conditions, for the use of both strains as starters in processes where higher salt concentrations are required.

RESUMO

Embolism is very frequently found in patients with infective endocarditis (IE), fundamentally in cerebral arteries. An early diagnosis and possible complications seem to be related to morbidity and mortality. Echocardiography has a considerable function in early diagnosis, and, also, when we evaluate the risk of major cerebral embolism. However there is no agreement in the second aspect: for some authors echocardiography only slightly aids, but others consider it of great value in identifying high-risk patients. We describe a patient who suffers infective endocarditis by Staphylococcus aureus with significant neurological complications in its evaluation. Vegetation was disclosed by transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), whereas transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) was unable to do so. This is why we underline the role of TEE in the diagnosis and description of vegetation features (size, mobility and implantation) which seem to be linked to the risk of cerebral complications.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: primary gastric B-cell lymphoma of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue type has been linked to infection of the gastric mucosa with Helicobacter pylori. The eradication of this pathogen with antibiotics can lead to regression of this type of lymphoma. The objective of this study was to describe the clinical, endoscopic and histologic evolution in 6 patients with primary gastric B-cell lymphoma of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue type treated with eradication of H. pylori. METHOD: descriptive study of a retrospective case series. Patients with low-grade gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue type lymphoma were initially treated with eradication therapy for H. pylori. We evaluated their clinical, endoscopic and histologic course in sequential follow-up visits after initial therapy. RESULTS: six patients who satisfied all selection criteria were studied. In five of six patients H. pylori was eradicated and the lymphoma showed regression within 6 to 24 months. In one patient transition of low-grade to high-grade gastric lymphoma occurred. CONCLUSIONS: these results, along with similar findings from other studies, suggest eradication of H. pylori should be the initial treatment of choice for low-grade B-cell gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue type lymphoma in the early stages. The most appropriate duration of follow-up is unknown, but prolonged follow-up is indicated to detect recurrences.

RESUMO

A case of ampullary cancer, the first clinical manifestation of which was two episodes of acute pancreatitis is presented with review of the literature on the possible role of this type of cancer as a causal agent of episodes of acute pancreatitis. We support the use of ERCP in all patients with acute idiopathic pancreatitis with the aim of discarding the possibility of a tributary ampullary tumor of curative removal.

RESUMO

Contribution of a new case of inverted papilloma (IP) of the upper urinary tract (UUT) with the idiosyncrasy of being bilateral and synchronic, a fact not found in the reviewed literature, treated with radical surgery on the left side and conservatively on the right one. Discussion on this pathology is addressed, emphasising its benign biological behaviour, which does not eliminate some cases of malignization. Treatment has to be conservative, and so we stress the relevance of defining a suspicion state to make pre- and peri- operative diagnosis in which endourological methods, that allow both direct visualization and the taking of a biopsy, play a preeminent role. Subsequent strict monitoring is essential due to the likelihood of relapse and malignant changes.

RESUMO

Seven cases of inverted papilloma (IP), two located at the UUT level and five in the bladder, one associated to transitional cells carcinoma. Treatment was conservative for the whole series, and neither co-adjunctive therapy or chemoprophylaxis was applied, except for the last case; after an average follow-up of 19.8 months they all show complete remission. A discussion of urinary tract IP is suggested, studying the epidemiology, histology, pathogeny, clinical characteristics and diagnostic methods, of which endourological investigations are the most effective for a reliable diagnosis, since they allow direct visualization and biopsy sampling. Regarding the therapeutic options, the paper highlights the need for conservative surgery due to its benign biological behaviour. A strict control of the patients is necessary due to likelihood of recurrence and malignant transformation.

This work reports the synthesis and characterization of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) functionalized with tridecafluorooctyltriethoxysilane (F13) and their in situ incorporation onto cotton textiles. The hybrid MSNs and the functional textiles were prepared by a one-pot co-condensation methodology between tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and F13, with hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) as the template and triethanolamine as the base. The influence of the F13 to TEOS molar ratio (1:10, 1:5 and 1:3) on the nanoparticle morphology, porosity, degree of functionalization, and hydro/oleophobic properties is discussed. The hybrid nanosilicas presented high colloidal stability and were spherical and monodispersed with average particle size of ∼45 nm. They also showed high surface areas, large pore volumes, and a wormhole-type mesoporous structure. The increase in the organosilane proportion during the co-condensation process led to a more radially branched wormhole-like mesoporosity, a decrease in the surface area, pore volume, and amount of surface silanol groups, and an enrichment of the surface with fluorocarbon moieties. These changes imparted hydrophobic and oleophobic properties to the materials, especially to that containing the highest F13 loading. Cotton textiles were coated with the F13-MSNs through an efficient and less time-consuming route. The combination between surface roughness and mesoporosity imparted by the MSNs, and the low surface energy provided by the organosilane resulted in superhydrophobic functional textiles. Moreover, the textile with the highest loading of fluorocarbon groups was superamphiphobic.
