Piroplasmosis is a disease that negatively affects equine health worldwide. Hence, 324 blood samples were collected from grazing horses in ten sites in Xinjiang and testing them for the presence of Theileria equi and Babesia caballi by PCR of the EMA-1 gene and BC48 gene, respectively. Of the 324 blood samples, 161 (49.7%) were positive for equine piroplasms. The prevalence of T. equi was 38.9% (126/324), while that of B. caballi was 30.2% (98/324). The T. equi and B. caballi co-infection rate was 19.4% (63/324). From the 126 EMA-1 gene sequences and 98 BC48 gene sequences we obtained, 21 and 27 genotypes were identified, respectively. The EMA-1 sequences together with the GenBank reference sequences grouped into four clusters, with those from the present study forming two distinct clusters. In contrast, the BC48 sequences formed eight clusters with the GenBank reference sequences, while those obtained in the present study formed five distinct clusters. Our results highlight the widespread distribution and abundant gene polymorphism of T. equi and B. caballi in grazing horses from Xinjiang.

Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a plasticizer and an endocrine disruptor. Microplastics (MPs) are pathogenic small plastic particles and abundant in the aqueous environment. The problem of residual hazards of plastic products is worthy of study, especially the joint exposure of a variety of plastic-related products to the toxic effect. We used 200 mg/kg DEHP and 10 mg/L MPs to establish exposure model in vivo and 2 mM DEHP and 200 µg/L MPs to establish AML12 cell exposure model in vitro. In vivo study results showed that compared with the control group (NC) group, DEHP and MPs significantly increased the contents of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide, and significantly decreased the contents of glutathione and the activity of superoxide dismutase, total antioxidant capacity, catalase and glutathione peroxidase. The level of oxidative stress was further aggravated after combined exposure. The reactive oxygen species level of AML12 exposed to DEHP and MPs in vitro was significantly higher than NC group, and the combined exposure was significantly higher than the single exposure. The in vivo and in vitro also confirmed that DEHP and MPs could significantly increase the mRNA and protein levels of apoptosis markers and necroptosis markers and there was an additive effect. After N-acetylcysteine treatment in vitro, the above-mentioned oxidative stress level and cell damage decreased significantly. This study provided a reference for advocating the reduction of the mixed use of plastic products, and provided a basis for preventing the harm of plastic products residues.

Bisphenol A (BPA), an environmental pollutant, can cause multiple organ tissue damage by inducing oxidative stress. Cineole (CIN) is a terpene oxide existing in a variety of plant essential oils, which has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antioxidant effects. This study examined the effects of 200 nM BPA and 20 µM CIN on apoptosis, autophagy, and immunology in grass carp hepatocytes (L8824). The treatments were categorized as NC, CIN, BPA + CIN, and BPA. The findings demonstrated that BPA exposure could increase ROS levels and oxidative stress-related indicators, decrease the expression of the Nrf2/keap1 pathway and the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway, increase the expression of genes involved in the apoptotic pathway (Bax and Caspase3), and decrease the expression of the anti-apoptotic gene Bcl-2 by lowering mitochondrial membrane potential. BPA also reduced the expression of genes linked to autophagy (ATG5, Beclin1, LC3). Changes in immunological function after BPA exposure were also shown by changes in the amounts of antimicrobial peptides (HEPC, ß-defensin, LEAP2) and cytokines (INF-γ, IL-1ß, IL-2, and TNF-α). After the co-treatment of CIN and BPA, CIN can inhibit BPA-induced apoptosis and recover from autophagy and immune function to a certain extent by binding to keap1 to exert an anti-oxidative regulatory effect of Nrf2 incorporation into the nucleus. Molecular docking provides strong evidence for the interaction of CIN ligands with keap1 receptors. Therefore, these results indicated that CIN could inhibit BPA-induced apoptosis, autophagy inhibition and immunosuppression in grass carp hepatocytes by regulating the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway with Nrf2/keap1/ROS. This study provided further information to the risk assessment of the neuroendocrine disruptor BPA on aquatic organisms and offered suggestions and resources for further research into the function of natural extracts in the body's detoxification process.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor, that can cause immune dysfunction. Cineole (CIN) has that effect of regulating immune function and resist oxidation. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are one of the ways to resist pathogen invasion. In order to explore the effects of BPA and CIN on the release of chicken NETs and the antagonistic effect of CIN, take chicken peripheral blood neutrophils as object of study, grouping as NC, CIN, BPA + CIN and BPA. SEM, flow cytometry, RT-PCR, Western-blot and other methods were used to detect related indicators. The results showed that BPA inhibited the activities of GPX, SOD and CAT, increased the contents of MDA and NO, increased the activity of iNOS. BPA exposure inhibited the expression of myeloperoxidase (MPO), neutrophil elastase (NE) and histone, and inhibited the release of NETs. BPA activated downstream apoptosis and necroptosis through the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38-MAPK) pathway, which increased the expression of cytochrome C (CytC), bcl-2 associated K protein gene (bak), cysteinyl aspartate specific proteinase 3 (caspase-3), cysteinyl aspartate specific proteinase 9 (caspase-9), receptor-interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1), receptor-interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK3) and mixed lineage kinase domain-like protein (MLKL), decreased the expression of B-cell lymphoma-2 (bcl-2). However, the co-exposure of CIN and BPA partially recovered the release of NETs, alleviated BPA-induced oxidative stress, and inhibited the activation of p38-MAPK pathway, necroptosis, and mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. These results indicated that CIN modulated p38 pathway alleviated BPA-induced neutrophil necroptosis and apoptosis, and increased NETs formation.

Copper (Cu) is a common environmental pollutant in nature. Cu-poisoning can cause liver damage and erythrocytes hemolysis. To evaluate the effect of CuSO4 poisoning on the morphological and functional characteristics of goat red blood cells. Five 10-14-month-old goats were selected for jugular vein blood sampling to obtain erythrocytes, and then the erythrocytes were processed with different concentrations (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 µmol/L) of CuSO4 for 48 h, and 40 µmol/L doses CuSO4 incubated for different time (12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 h) to process erythrocytes. We observed the changes in erythrocyte morphology through scanning electron microscopy, and detected the antioxidant function and activities of three ATPases. Additionally, biological properties were examined from the perspectives of phospholipids and membrane protein components, permeability fragility, and fluidity in erythrocytes. We found that after CuSO4 treatment, the antioxidant capacity of erythrocytes decreased, which was manifested as increased MDA content and decreased CuZn-SOD and GSH-Px activities (p < 0.05). In addition, we also found that erythrocyte fluidity decreased, osmotic fragility increased, membrane phospholipid percentage and protein composition changes abnormally, and Na+/K+-ATPase, Mg2+-ATPase and Ca2+-ATPase activities decreased (p < 0.05). From the results, it can be concluded that CuSO4 exposure causes hemolysis of goat erythrocytes through oxidative stress to the structure and function of erythrocytes, showing a dose-time effect.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a common toxic gas in chicken houses that endangers the health of poultry. Harbin has a cold climate in winter, and the conflict between heat preservation and ventilation in poultry houses is obvious. In this study, we investigated the H2S content in chicken houses during winter in Harbin and found that the H2S concentration exceeded the national standard in individual chicken houses. Then, a model of H2S exposure was established in an environmental simulation chamber. We also developed a NaHS exposure model of chicken peripheral blood lymphocytes in vitro. Proteomics analysis was used to reveal the toxicology of thymus injury in broilers, the FOXO signaling pathway was determined to be significantly enriched, ROS bursts and JNK/MST1/FOXO1 pathway activation induced by H2S exposure were detected, and ROS played an important switch role in the JNK/MST1/FOXO1 pathway. In addition, H2S exposure-induced thymus cell death involved immune dysregulation. Overall, the present study adds data for H2S contents in chicken houses, provides new findings for the mechanism of H2S poisoning and reveals a new regulatory pathway in immune injury.

Blastocystis is a common intestinal protozoan in humans and various animals worldwide. A few studies have reported the genetic characterization of Blastocystis in pigs in China, but no epidemiological data are available from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In this study, 801 fecal samples were collected from seven scale pig farms in Xinjiang and tested by polymerase chain reaction and sequence analysis of the partial SSU rRNA gene. The average infection rate of Blastocystis was 21.7% (174/801), with 7.1% in preweaning piglets, 10.0% in postweaning piglets, 31.8% in fattening pigs, and 41.9% in sows (χ2  = 104.89; P < 0.01). Blastocystis subtypes ST1 (7/174), ST3 (2/174), and ST5 (165/174) were identified, with subtype ST5 being predominant in each of the pig farms and in each of the age groups. ST3 and ST5 were identified in preweaning piglets, and ST1, ST3, and ST5 were identified in postweaning piglets. In contrast, only the subtype ST5 was observed in fattening pigs and sows. Genetic polymorphisms were observed at the intrasubtype level, including two variations of ST1 (ST1A, ST1B), and seven of ST5 (ST5A to ST5G), by sequence alignment analysis and phylogenetic analysis. More studies are needed to elucidate the transmission and public health significance of Blastocystis in pigs in various areas.

BACKGROUND: Enterocytozoon bieneusi, a zoonotic pathogen, has the potential to infect both immunocompromised and immunocompetent humans. It is found in large number of animals; however, not much is known regarding its prevalence in equine animals, particularly donkeys. This is the first molecular epidemiological evaluation of E. bieneusi in 178 free-ranging donkeys from five countrysides; and 502 farmed donkeys from 18 farms in 12 cities of Xinjiang, China by Nested PCR. RESULTS: E. bieneusi was detected in 2.5% (17/680) donkeys, with 2.6% (13/502) in farmed and 2.2% (4/178) in free-ranging ones. Sequence analysis identified eight ITS genotypes, all belonging to zoonotic Groups 1 or 2, including six known genotypes: horse1 (n = 5), D (n = 3), NCD-2 (n = 3), BEB6 (n = 2), BEB4 (n = 1), and NIAI (n = 1); and two new genotypes: XJD1 (n = 1) and XJD2 (n = 1). CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report confirming the presence of E. bieneusi in donkeys in Xinjiang, China, and indicates the possibility of zoonotic transmission of this pathogenic parasite.

The aim of the study was to investigate the protective effects of selenium yeast (SeY) against necroptosis triggered by Cd via inhibition of oxidative stress and MAPK pathway in the liver of chicken. Two hundred 120-day-old layers were randomly divided into four groups and raised for 120 days. The histopathological examination showed that necrosis characteristics were observed in Cd-exposed chicken livers. The exposure of Cd significantly reduced the activities of SOD, GSH-Px and CAT while improving MDA level in both serum and liver of chickens (P < 0.05), and induced oxidative stress. The MLKL, Rip1, RIP3, ERK, JNK and P38 mRNA expression of Cd group were significantly higher than other three groups (P < 0.01), and those in the Se + Cd group were significantly higher than control group and Se group (P < 0.01). However, the mRNA expression level of caspase8 of Cd was significantly lower than other three groups (P < 0.01), and that in the Se + Cd group was significantly higher than control group and Se group (P < 0.01), so the supplement of SeY could improve these situations. Similar results were also detected at the protein level. The results of the present study indicated that Cd could induce oxidative stress, activate MAPK pathway and evoke necroptosis damage in chicken livers, whereas SeY had protective effects in preventing this kind of Cd-induced injury by inhibition of oxidative stress and down-regulation MAPK pathway.

BACKGROUND: Piroplasmosis is a common and prevalent tick-borne disease that affects equids. OBJECTIVES: To determine the infection and molecular characteristics of the piroplasms in donkeys from Xinjiang, northwestern China, we undertook a cross sectional study by collecting representative samples across several counties within the region. METHODS: A total of 344 blood samples were collected from adult domestic donkeys from 13 counties in Xinjiang. PCR was conducted to test for T. equi and B. caballi in the blood samples based on the equine merozoite antigen-1 (Ema-1) gene and the 48 kDa rhoptry protein (BC48) gene, respectively. RESULTS: Sixteen blood samples tested positive for piroplasms and the overall infection rate was 4.7% (16/344). Seven of the 13 counties were positive for piroplasms. Among the 16 piroplasm-positive samples, 15 were singly infected with T. equi with an infection rate of 4.4% (15/344), and coinfection with T. equi and B. caballi was detected in one sample (0.3%, 1/344) from Wushi. Four T. equi sequence genotypes were identified and grouped into different branches of the evolutionary trees. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that the infection rate of piroplasms is low in domestic donkeys in southern Xinjiang and that T. equi genotypes have a regional distribution.

Introduction: In the realm of basketball, refining shooting skills and decision-making levels using intelligent agents has garnered significant interest. This study addresses the challenge by introducing an innovative framework that combines multi-modal perception and deep reinforcement learning. The goal is to create basketball robots capable of executing precise shots and informed choices by effectively integrating sensory inputs and learned strategies. Methods: The proposed approach consists of three main components: multi-modal perception, deep reinforcement learning, and end-to-end architecture. Multi-modal perception leverages the multi-head attention mechanism (MATT) to merge visual, motion, and distance cues for a holistic perception of the basketball scenario. The deep reinforcement learning framework utilizes the Deep Q-Network (DQN) algorithm, enabling the robots to learn optimal shooting strategies over iterative interactions with the environment. The end-to-end architecture connects these components, allowing seamless integration of perception and decision-making processes. Results: The experiments conducted demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Basketball robots equipped with multi-modal perception and deep reinforcement learning exhibit improved shooting accuracy and enhanced decision-making abilities. The multi-head attention mechanism enhances the robots' perception of complex scenes, leading to more accurate shooting decisions. The application of the DQN algorithm results in gradual skill improvement and strategic optimization through interaction with the environment. Discussion: The integration of multi-modal perception and deep reinforcement learning within an end-to-end architecture presents a promising avenue for advancing basketball robot training and performance. The ability to fuse diverse sensory inputs and learned strategies empowers robots to make informed decisions and execute accurate shots. The research not only contributes to the field of robotics but also has potential implications for human basketball training and coaching methodologies.

Glyphosate can cause tissue damage such as liver and kidney in mammals. Tannin has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the effect of glyphosate on the growth of L8824 cell line and the effect of tannin on antagonism of glyphosate through the ROS/PTEN/PI3K/AKT axis are unclear. In this study, L8824 cells were treated with glyphosate (50 µg/mL) and/or tannin (4.5 µM) for 24 h to establish a model. The results showed that glyphosate exposure increased ROS and MDA levels, decreased CAT and SOD activities. PTEN was activated and the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway was inhibited. The P53/Bcl-2/Bax/CytC/Caspase3 and RIPK1/RIPK3/MLKL pathways were also activated. In addition, the cytokines and antimicrobial peptides LEAP-2, TNF-α and IL-1ß were increased while ß-defensin, Hepcidin, IL-2 and IFN-γ were decreased. The use of tannin reduced the adverse effects of glyphosate exposure on L8824 cells significantly. In conclusion, tannin can trigger oxidative stress via PTEN/PI3K/AKT pathway to cause apoptosis, necroptosis and immune dysfunction of L8824 cells.

Anaplasma spp. are important zoonotic tick-borne pathogens that impact on human health. There are few reports on the prevalence and molecular genetic characteristics of Cervidae species in China. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to investigate the presence of Anaplasma spp. in blood samples of Tian Shan wapiti (Cervus elaphus songaricus) in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China, and conduct phylogenetic analyses. A total of 50 blood samples (wild deer n = 26, and captive deer n = 24) were collected from the deer. PCR was used to detect Anaplasma spp. in the blood samples. Forty percent (20) of the samples were found to contain Anaplasma spp. Three Anaplasma species DNA were detected in deer blood samples: A. bovis (n = 13), A. ovis (n = 18), and A. phagocytophilum (n = 11). Among the 20 Anaplasma spp. positive samples, 14 were mixed infection of two or three pathogens. The prevalence of Anaplasma species in wild deer was significantly higher than that of captive deer, 73.1% (19) vs 4.2% (1) respectively, (p < 0.01). Two A. ovis sequence types (AB1, and AB2), three A. ovis sequence types (AO1-AO3), and one A. phagocytophilum sequence type (AP1) were obtained in this study. The sequences of AO1 shared 100% identity with a human isolate from Cyprus. Our results suggest that wild deer are more likely to become infected with Anaplasma spp. than captive individuals, and thus, could potentially transmit pathogens to humans.

Bovine anaplasmosis is caused by a group of obligate intracellular bacteria belonging to the genus Anaplasma, which are transmitted by ticks. This study was conducted to determine the prevalences and molecular characterization of Anaplasma spp. in dairy cattle in the upper reaches of the Tarim River in Xinjiang, China. Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing approaches, DNA of Anaplasma spp. was detected in 16 of 493 (3.2%) blood samples from dairy cattle. Positive rates were 0.2% (1/493), 0.4% (2/493), 0.2% (1/493), 2.4% (12/493) and 2.4% (12/493) for A. bovis, A. ovis, A. phagocytophilum like strain, A. phagocytophilum and A. platys like strain, respectively. Anaplasma phagocytophilum and A. platys like strain co-infection was detected in 12 samples. To our knowledge, this is the first report of A. ovis infection in dairy cattle in Xinjiang. This study provides new data on the prevalences of Anaplasma spp. in cattle in Xinjiang, which will help to formulate appropriate control strategies for these pathogens in this area.

Cadmium (Cd) is a ubiquitous toxic heavy metal in the natural environment that can cause multiple organ damage to the bodies of animals and humans. Selenium yeast (SeY) is a kind of organic selenium (Se) that has a very strong function against Cd-induced injury to tissues or organs. The aim of the current study was to investigate the roles of inflammatory factors and heat shock proteins (HSPs) in inflammatory injury triggered by Cd and to analyze the protective effects of SeY on Cd-induced damnification in the livers of chickens. Two hundred 120-day-old layers were randomly divided into four groups and raised on a conventional diet, or with Se (0.5 mg/kg SeY), Cd (150 mg/kg CdCl2), or Se + Cd (0.5 mg/kg SeY and 150 mg/kg CdCl2) in their basic diets for 120 days. Then, the liver histopathology, production of nitric oxide (NO), activity of inducible NO synthase (iNOS), and mRNA and protein expression levels of inflammatory factors (iNOS, NF-κB, TNF-α, and PTGE) and heat shock proteins (HSPs 27, 40, 60, 70, and 90) were examined. The results showed that exposure to Cd obviously increased Cd accumulation, NO production, iNOS activity, inflammatory factor, and HSP mRNA and protein expression levels and further caused an inflammatory response. Supplementation with SeY had an antagonistic effect on Cd-induced inflammatory injury in chicken livers. Thus, the present study suggests that SeY can be taken as a potential therapeutic for Cd-induced liver inflammatory injury in chickens.

Cryptosporidium spp. are distributed ubiquitously worldwide, and pigs are considered as one of the main reservoir hosts. Eight hundred one porcine fecal specimens were collected from seven intensive pig farms in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. Cryptosporidium spp. were screened via PCR amplification of the small ribosomal subunit RNA gene, and 143 specimens (17.9%, 143/801) from all seven farms tested positive for Cryptosporidium spp. Cryptosporidium prevalence in the pigs differed significantly among farms (p < 0.01). The highest Cryptosporidium spp. prevalence in post-weaned pigs was 39.5% (111/281), followed by fattening pigs (23.2%, 30/129), pre-weaned pigs (1.2%, 2/169), and sows (0/222). Significant differences were observed between age groups (p < 0.01). C. suis was the predominantly identified species (62.9%, 90/143), followed by C. scrofarum (35.7%, 51/143), and C. parvum (1.4%, 2/143). Two C. parvum specimens were subtyped by analyzing the 60-kDa glycoprotein (gp60) gene sequences and were identified as IIdA14G1 and IIdA15G1. To our knowledge, this is the first report of C. parvum infection in pigs in China. The identification of three Cryptosporidium species, including zoonotic C. parvum in pigs in Xinjiang raises concern for the health of both swine animals and personnel in the pig industry.

To study the presence of Giardia duodenalis in Xinjiang, northwest China, we collected 801 fecal specimens from seven large-scale pig farms and screened them using PCR targeting the SSU rRNA gene. Twenty-one (2.6%) of the specimens from five farms were G. duodenalis-positive, with a significant difference in prevalence among different farms (0-8.7%) (p < 0.01). Giardia duodenalis prevalence was highest in fattening pigs (5.4%, 7/129), followed by sows (3.2%, 7/222), post-weaning piglets (1.8%, 5/281), and pre-weaning piglets (1.2%, 2/169), but there was no significant difference in prevalence among the age groups (p > 0.05). Sequence analysis of the SSU rRNA gene revealed that the 21 G. duodenalis strains belonged to three assemblages: A (n = 2), B (n = 16), and E (n = 3). Assemblage B was the predominant assemblage and was widely distributed in all G. duodenalis-positive farms and age groups. All G. duodenalis-positive specimens were further assayed at the ß-giardin (bg), glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh), and triosephosphate isomerase (tpi) genes, and two tpi, four gdh, and two bg sequences were identified. These data indicate that pigs may be a zoonotic risk and can potentially spread G. duodenalis infection from animals to humans.

Enterocytozoon bieneusi is an obligate intracellular fungus, infecting various invertebrate and vertebrate hosts, it is common in humans and causes diarrhea in the immunocompromised. In the present study, 801 fecal specimens were collected from pigs on seven large-scale pig farms in Xinjiang, China. Nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) gene showed that the overall E. bieneusi infection rate was 48.6% (389/801). The E. bieneusi infection rates differed significantly among the collection sites (20.0-73.0%) (χ2 = 75.720, df = 6, p < 0.01). Post-weaned pigs had the highest infection rate (77.2%, 217/281), followed by fattening pigs (67.4%, 87/129) and pre-weaned suckling pigs (35.5%, 60/169). Adult pigs had the lowest infection rate (11.3%, 25/222). The E. bieneusi infection rates also differed significantly among age groups (χ2 = 246.015, df = 3, p < 0.01). Fifteen genotypes were identified, including 13 known genotypes (CHC, CS-1, CS-4, CS-7, CS-9, D, EbpA, EbpC, EbpD, H, PigEb4, PigEBITS5, and WildBoar8) and two novel genotypes (XJP-II and XJP-III). Among them, six genotypes (CS-4, D, EbpA, EbpC, H, and PigEBITS5) have been reported in humans. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all the genotypes belonged to Group 1 of E. bieneusi. These findings suggest that pigs may play an important role in transmitting E. bieneusi infections to humans.

Bovine theileriosis is a common tick-born disease infected by Theileria spp. causing loss of beef and dairy cattle worldwide, therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and genetic diversity of Theileria spp. in Southern Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. We screened 493 dairy cattle blood samples from Southern Xinjiang to detect Theileria spp. by PCR. The overall prevalence of Theileria spp. was 23.5% (116/493). The most frequent Theileria sp. was Theileria annulata 22.5% (111/493), followed by T. orientalis (0.6%, 3/493) and T. ovis (0.2%, 1/493). Additionally, one sample was co-infected with T. annulata and T. orientalis. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the 11 T. annulata Tams1 sequences grouped into three sequence clusters that belonged to group 2 (Asia group) and shared 96.4% to 99.9% identity with to each other. Furthermore, our results revealed the presence of several T. orientalis MPSP genotypes (types 1, 2, and 5) in this region. In this study, T. annulata was found to be the most prevalent Theileria species in dairy cattle from Southern Xinjiang. Theileria ovis was detected in one DNA sample of a free-grazing dairy cow from China for the first time.

Locoism threatens the sustainable development of animal husbandry in areas around the world with intensified desertification, especially in the western United States, western China, Canada, and Mexico, among other countries. This study was conducted to discover potential serum biomarkers in locoweed-poisoned rabbits and lay a foundation for early diagnosis of locoism. We performed iTRAQ labeling coupled with two-dimensional liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (2D LC-MS/MS), comparing locoweed-poisoned rabbits and healthy controls. A total of 78 differentially-expressed proteins (fold change > 1.5 or < 0.67) were identified in the locoweed-poisoned rabbits compared to healthy controls. We found that 57.70% of differentially-expressed proteins were functionally related, and through bioinformatics analysis, we were able to construct a network mainly in complement and coagulation cascades. Significant differences in thrombospondin 4 (THBS4), kininogen 1 (KNG1), hemoglobin (HBB), and complement factor I (CFI) between locoweed poisoned animals and controls were found (P < 0.05) and validated by western blotting. These results suggested that locoweed could damage neurocytes, lower immunity, and form thrombi in rabbits. Our study proposes potential biomarkers for locoism diagnosis and also provides a new experimental basis to understand the pathogenesis of locoism.
