RESUMO

Soil organic nitrogen (N) mineralization not only supports ecosystem productivity but also weakens carbon and N accumulation in soils. Recalcitrant (mainly mineral-associated organic matter) and labile (mainly particulate organic matter) organic materials differ dramatically in nature. Yet, the patterns and drivers of recalcitrant (MNrec) and labile (MNlab) organic N mineralization rates and their consequences on ecosystem N retention are still unclear. By collecting MNrec (299 observations) and MNlab (299 observations) from 57 15N tracing studies, we found that soil pH and total N were the master factors controlling MNrec and MNlab, respectively. This was consistent with the significantly higher rates of MNrec in alkaline soils and of MNlab in natural ecosystems. Interestingly, our analysis revealed that MNrec directly stimulated microbial N immobilization and plant N uptake, while MNlab stimulated the soil gross autotrophic nitrification which discouraged ammonium immobilization and accelerated nitrate production. We also noted that MNrec was more efficient at lower precipitation and higher temperatures due to increased soil pH. In contrast, MNlab was more efficient at higher precipitation and lower temperatures due to increased soil total N. Overall, we suggest that increasing MNrec may lead to a conservative N cycle, improving the ecosystem services and functions, while increasing MNlab may stimulate the potential risk of soil N loss.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to explore the internal pathway of the association between activities of daily living and subjective well-being among Chinese older adults using a large and representative sample. BACKGROUND: There is still a lack of systematic investigation into the association between activities of daily living and subjective well-being among Chinese older adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 10 578 participants from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. We applied multiple linear regression analysis and Spearman correlation analysis to examine the association between activities of daily living and subjective well-being and PROCESS macro to determine the mediating effect of leisure activities on the relationship between them. RESULTS: The mean total score of subjective well-being was 30.5 ± 4.4. The prevalence of basic activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living limitations was 18.0% and 60.8%, respectively. Correlation analysis showed that activities of daily living score were negatively correlated with subjective well-being. Leisure activities were positively correlated with subjective well-being. The effect of instrumental activities of daily living on subjective well-being was partially mediated by leisure activities and leisure activities completely mediated the association between basic activities of daily living and subjective well-being. CONCLUSIONS: The effect of instrumental activities of daily living on subjective well-being was partially mediated by leisure activities and leisure activities completely mediated the association between basic activities of daily living and subjective well-being.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Congenital birth defects are the main source of disease burden among children under 5 years old in China. This study aims to compare the trends in disease burden of different congenital birth defects among Chinese children under 5 years old from 1990 to 2019, and to provide a scientific basis for strengthening the comprehensive prevention and control of birth defects. METHODS: Based on data from the Global Burden Disease (GBD) in 2019, the incidence mortality rate, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) rate of congenital birth defects among Chinese children under 5 years old from 1990 to 2019 were selected as evaluation indicators. The Joinpoint regression model was used to analyze the trends in disease burden of different types with congenital birth defects over three decades. The study also compared the differences in disease burden of congenital birth defects among children under 5 years old by gender. RESULTS: Compared to 1990, the DALYs rates of congenital heart anomalies (1 931.91/100 000), digestive congenital anomalies (364.63/100 000), neural tube defects (277.20/100 000), congenital musculoskeletal and limb anomalies (133.33/100 000), and Down syndrome (128.22/100 000) in children under 5 years old in China in 2019 were decreased 70.78%, 71.61%, 86.21%, 36.84% and 73.65%, respectively. From 1990 to 2019, the mortality rates and DALYs rates of different congenital birth defects showed an overall downward trend, but the incidence of digestive congenital anomalies and Down syndrome showed an upward trend after 2005 and 2001, respectively. Except for congenital musculoskeletal and limb anomalies, incidence of the remaining categories of birth defects were higher in boys than that in girls. CONCLUSIONS: The disease burden of congenital birth defects in children under 5 years old in China is decreased substantially from 1990 to 2019, but the burden of congenital heart anomalies is still serious and the incidence of some birth defect diseases is on the rise, and it is still crucial to strengthen the prevention and treatment for birth defects in children and propose targeted measures according to their gender characteristics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To investigate the level of knowledge, attitude, and practices about glaucoma and associated factors among primary glaucoma patients in Kunming, China. METHODS: A hospital-based study was conducted on 93 patients from the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University. Interviewer-administered questionnaires were used to collect data after written informed consent. Data were analyzed by SPSS 19.0. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to identify factors. A Chi-square test was used to analyze the association between knowledge of glaucoma and medication compliance, Mann-Whitney U test was performed to assess the relationship between knowledge of glaucoma and quality of life in patients with glaucoma. P-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Among 93 patients, 55 (59.14%) were aware of glaucoma, 48 (51.61%) had good knowledge of glaucoma, while 45 (48.39%) had poor knowledge. Younger age and duration of glaucoma were associated positively with knowledge of glaucoma. 87 (93.54%) patients got knowledge of their disease from doctors. 79.17% of respondents could use all the anti-glaucoma medications on time, out of which 54.17% had good knowledge of glaucoma while 25.00% had poor knowledge of glaucoma. 30.56% of respondents used to stop anti-glaucoma medications on their own out of which only 9.72% had good knowledge of glaucoma while 20.83% had poor knowledge of glaucoma. Patients with good knowledge of glaucoma had lower scores on the Glaucoma Quality of Life-15 questionnaire. Thus, the compliance to anti-glaucoma medications and glaucoma-related quality of life were better in patients with good knowledge. CONCLUSIONS: The level of knowledge of glaucoma among patients in Kunming is relatively low. Improving knowledge with suitable content for patients through effective multiple means such as the mass media rather than relying only on ophthalmologists may be a veritable first step in combating blindness from glaucoma and enhancing patients' quality of life.

RESUMO

Frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) can be acquired by using a distributed feedback semiconductor laser (DFB-SL) operating at period-one (P1) oscillation under an optical injection modulated by a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). In this work, through introducing another MZM to establish cascade-modulated optical injection, an improved photonic scheme for generating high-quality FMCW is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The experimental results indicate that, under appropriate injection parameters, the central frequency of the generated FMCW is widely tunable, and the bandwidth is larger than that obtained under a single MZM modulation. Further introducing optical feedback for suppressing the phase noise, the frequency comb contrast of the generated FMCW can be improved obviously.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The role of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in the occurrence and development of gastric cancer (GC) has recently attracted increasing interest. The following study investigates the role of a newly discovered hsa_circ_0008434, which has been confirmed to be highly expressed in GC tissues, in regulating GC biological behaviour. METHODS: High-throughput RNA sequencing was used to identify differentially expressed genes between normal gastric tissues and GC tissues; actinomycin D and RNase R assays were used to determine the stability and loop structure of hsa_circ_0008434; and the miRanda database was used to predict the target genes of hsa_circ_0008434. The role of hsa_circ_0008434 in cell proliferation, migration, and invasion was examined using CCK-8, wound healing, Transwell and colony formation assays. The regulatory relationships among hsa_circ_0008434, microRNA-6838 (miR-6838), and ubiquitin-specific peptidase 9X (USP9X) were determined by dual-luciferase activity assays. The expression of hsa_circ_0008434 and miR-6838 was measured by qPCR; the expression of USP9X was detected by immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. The effects of hsa_circ_0008434 on in vivo tumour growth were assessed in xenograft models. RESULTS: We found that hsa_circ_0008434 was one of the most upregulated circRNAs in GC tissue versus normal tissue. Further in vitro testing indicated that by acting as a miRNA sponge for miR-6838-5p, hsa_circ_0008434 promotes the expression of USP9X and further increases the proliferation, migration, and invasion of GC cells. In addition, animal studies indicated that hsa_circ_0008434 could promote tumour growth in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: Hsa_circ_0008434 may promote GC proliferation, invasion and migration by regulating the expression of miR-6838 and USP9X.

RESUMO

By the reaction of inorganic-ligand CdS/Cd2+ quantum dots (QDs) with inorganic-ligand CdSe/CdS/S2- nanoplatelets (NPLs), semiconductor CdS QDs were fused with CdSe/CdS NPLs to yield all-inorganic assemblies, accompanied by great photoluminescence-enhancement. These all-inorganic assemblies facilitate charge transport between each other and open up interesting prospects with electronic and optoelectronic nanodevices.

RESUMO

We aimed to investigate the in vitro effect of pirfenidone (PFD) on proliferation, migration and collagen contraction of human pterygium fibroblasts (HPFs). HPFs were obtained from tissue explants during pterygium surgery. After treatment with pirfenidone, the HPFs proliferation was measured by MTT, cell cycle progression measured by flow cytometry, cell migration measured by the scratch assay, and cell contractility evaluated in fibroblast-populated collagen gels. The expression of TGF-ß1, TGF-ß2, MMP-1 and TIMP-1 were also determined with quantitative PCR, western blot and immunofluorescence staining. Results showed pirfenidone markedly inhibited HPFs proliferation with an IC50 of approximately 0.2 mg/ml. After treatment with 0.2 mg/ml pirfenidone for 24 hours, HPFs were at G0/G1 cell cycle arrest, with significantly reduced cell migration capability and collagen contraction, decreased mRNA and protein expressions of TGF-ß1, TGF-ß2 and MMP-1, and no alterations of TIMP-1 expression. Thus, we have concluded that pirfenidone at 0.2 mg/ml inhibits proliferation, migration, and collagen contraction of HPFs, which is associated with decreased expression of TGF-ß and MMP-1, and pirfenidone might represent a potentially therapeutic agent to prevent the recurrence of pterygium after surgery.

RESUMO

Based on a three-level model for quantum dot (QD) lasers, the characteristics of the photonic microwave generated by a QD laser simultaneously subject to optical injection and optical feedback are numerically investigated. First, the performance of the microwave signal generated by an optical injected QD laser operating at period one state are analyzed, and the mappings of the frequency and intensity of the generated microwave in the parameter space of the frequency detuning and injection strength are given, which are roughly similar to those reported experimentally. Next, an optical feedback loop is further introduced to the optically injected QD laser for compressing the linewidth of the microwave signal, and the results demonstrate that the linewidth of the generated microwave can be reduced by at least 1 order of magnitude under suitable feedback parameters. Finally, the effect of the linewidth enhancement factor on the generated microwave signal is analyzed.

RESUMO

High copper feed has been widely used as an inexpensive and highly effective feed additive to promote growth performance of pigs. However, long-term feeding of high copper feed may reduce the growth-promoting effects of copper, time-dependent accumulation of copper in animal tissues and organs, and copper toxicity thereby reducing the growth performance of pigs. Due to the widespread effects of high copper supplementation in animals' diets, the benefits and drawbacks of high copper feeding in pigs have been reported in several studies. Meanwhile, few of these studies have systematically described the mechanism by which high copper diets restrain pig growth. Therefore, to address the concerns and give a better understanding of the mechanism of high copper diet in restraining pig growth in different systems, this paper reviews the research progress of long-term supplementation of high copper on the growth of pigs and provides some suggestions and further research directions.

RESUMO

We experimentally investigate the nonlinear dynamics of two mutually coupled 1550 nm multi-transverse-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). The results show that, through continuously varying the coupling coefficient, the Y-polarization fundamental transverse mode and the Y-polarization first-order transverse mode in both VCSELs can be driven into period one, period doubling, multi-period, and chaos states. When the two mutually coupled VCSELs are simultaneously operating in the periodic state, localized synchronizations between the corresponding modes are observed. Moreover, mappings of dynamical states for typical transverse modes of the two mutually coupled VCSELs in the parameter space of the frequency detuning and coupling coefficient are specified.

RESUMO

A multi-channel wideband chaotic signal generation scheme is proposed and numerically investigated based on a slave multi-transverse mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (SL) subject to chaotic optical injection from a master multi-transverse mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (ML) with optical feedback. Taking two low-order transverse modes, LP01 and LP11, as an example for numerical calculations, the simulated results show that under suitable optical feedback both the LP01 and LP11 modes (two-channel) of a ML can be driven into the chaotic states where their bandwidths are relatively narrow at a level about 8 GHz. Further injecting the two chaotic signals into a SL, for the case of the globally chaotic optical injection, the SL can output two-channel chaotic signals with wide bandwidths above 20 GHz under appropriate operation parameters. Moreover, the case of SL with mode-selective chaotic optical injection is also analyzed.

RESUMO

A physical Sr0.95Ba0.05TiO3 memristor-based modified Chua's circuit is proposed, which is studied in this paper by means of both theoretical analysis and numerical simulations. The stability of this memristor-based modified Chua's circuit is analyzed. A systematic investigation of the dynamic behaviors and their dependence on the initial states and circuit parameters is performed, presenting the Lyapunov exponents spectra, bifurcation diagrams, phase diagrams, and Poincaré maps. The circuit emerges multiple dynamic behaviors, including stable points, periodic cycles, chaos, and some transient chaos. Specifically, the system has multistability, i.e., coexisting periods and coexisting chaotic attractors with the change of initial states and circuit parameters. This study is conducive to the subsequent design and analysis of memristor-based circuits for potential practical applications.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the associations of pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). METHODS: A prospective cohort of pregnant women were screened for GDM at 24-28 weeks of gestation between 2013 and 2015, resulting in a sample of 3 593 with GDM and 15 346 without GDM. The body mass, plasma glucose, and height data of the participants were collected by the local medical workers. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the associations of pre pregnancy body mass index and weight gain during pregnancy with GDM. RESULTS: The participants with pre pregnancy overweight [odds ratio(OR)=2.44, 95% cofidence interval(CI)1.98-2.99] and obesity (OR=4.98, 95%CI 2.52-9.91) were more likely to develop GDM. According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) criteria, excessive GWG in the first trimester occurred in 8.46% of the women, compared with 55.07% in the second trimester. After adjustment for age at delivery and pre pregnancy BMI, high GWG in the first trimesters in advanced maternal age (age at delivery≥35 yr.) group (OR=1.42, 95%CI 1.02-2.28) was a risk factor for GDM while the OR value of the non-advanced maternal age (age at delivery≤35 yr.) group was not statistically significant. In second trimesters, both advanced maternal age group (OR=1.59, 95%CI 1.14-1.88) and non-advanced maternal age group (OR=1.49, 95%CI 1.20-1.72) in high GWG were associated with high risk of GDM. CONCLUSION: Pre pregnancy overweight and obesity and excessive GWG during early and second trimesters of pregnancy may increase the risk of GDM in women in Southwestern China.

RESUMO

A reservoir computing (RC) system based on a semiconductor laser (SL) with double optical feedback and optical injection is proposed, and the prediction performance of such a system is numerically investigated via Santa Fe Time-Series Prediction task. The simulation results indicate that the RC system can yield a good prediction performance. Through optimizing some relevant operating parameters, ultra-fast information processing rates up to Gb/s level can be realized for the prediction error is below 3%.

RESUMO

A series of hybrid luminescent porous polymers (HLPPs) are synthesized through Friedel-Crafts reactions by tuning the molar ratio of triphenylamine (TPA) to octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS). The synthesized HLPPs exhibit high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas up to 841±10 m2 g-1 , high thermal stability with decomposition temperatures (Td at 5 wt %) up to 440 °C in air, and strong blue-violet luminescence at approximately 450 nm. The porosities and luminescent properties of the HLPPs, including emission wavelength, intensity, fluorescence quantum yield, and monochromaticity, can be tuned easily by modulating the molar ratio of TPA to OVS. In addition, the polymers may serve as excellent fluorescent probes for multianalyte detection, with high fluorescence quenching coefficients (KSV ) of 8900 and 4400 m-1 for Fe3+ and Cu2+ , respectively.

RESUMO

Radiation-induced intestinal injuries (RIII) commonly occur in patients who suffer from pelvic or abdominal cancer. Nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a key transcriptional regulator of antioxidant, and the radioprotective role of Nrf2 is found in bone marrow, lung, and intestine, etc. Here, we investigated the effect of Nrf2 knockout on radiation-induced intestinal injuries using Nrf2 knockout (Nrf2-/-) mice and wild-type (Nrf2+/+) C57BL/6J mice following 13 Gy abdominal irradiation (ABI). It was found that Nrf2 knockout promoted the survival of irradiated mice, protected the crypt-villus structure of the small intestine, and elevated peripheral blood lymphocyte count and thymus coefficients. The DNA damage of peripheral blood lymphocytes and the apoptosis of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) of irradiated Nrf2-/- mice were decreased. Furthermore, compared with that of Nrf2+/+ mice, Nrf2 knockout increased the number of Lgr5⁺ intestinal stem cells (ISCs) and their daughter cells including Ki67⁺ transient amplifying cells, Villin⁺ enterocytes, and lysozyme⁺ Paneth cells. Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) was accumulated in the crypt base nuclei of the small intestine, and the mRNA expression of NF-κB target genes Bcl-2, uPA, and Xiap of the small intestine from irradiated Nrf2-/- mice were increased. Collectively, Nrf2 knockout has the protective effect on small intestine damage following abdominal irradiation by prompting the proliferation and differentiation of Lgr5⁺ intestinal stem cells and activation of NF-κB.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The chitinase 3-like 1 (CHI3L1) has an important role in cancer progression, and high CHI3L1 expression is associated with the development and progression of cancers. Previous studies had been controversial with respect to the association between CHI3L1 expression and lung cancer prognosis. Thus, we performed a meta-analysis to investigate the prognostic value of CHI3L1 expression in lung cancer. METHODS: We searched Pubmed, Embase, and Wanfang databases to identify eligible studies. Overall survival and disease free survival were collected from included studies. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were calculated to estimate the association. Seven studies comprising 911 lung cancer patients were included in this meta-analysis. RESULTS: The results showed high CHI3L1 expression was independently associated with poorer overall survival in lung cancer patients (HR = 1.71, 95%CI 1.24-2.37, P = 0.001). Subgroup analysis by histological type showed that high CHI3L1 expression was independently associated with poorer overall survival in both non small-cell lung cancer patients (HR = 2.23,95%CI 1.43-3.47, P < 0.001) and small-cell lung cancer patients (HR = 1.45, 95%CI 1.06-2.00, P = 0.021). In addition, sensitivity analysis by omitting single study by turns did not change the pooled outcomes obviously. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that elevated serum CHI3L1 concentration is an independent prognostic biomarker for poorer survival in lung cancer patients.

RESUMO

Mono- and octa-azobenzene-functionalized cage silsesquioxanes were easily synthesized by the reaction of 4-bromoazobenzene with monovinyl-substituted octasilsesquioxane and cubic octavinylsilsesquioxane through the Heck coupling reaction. Excited-state energies obtained from time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) and the CAM-B3LYP functional correlate very well with experimental trans-cis photoisomerization results from UV/Vis spectroscopy. These azobenzene-functionalized cages exhibit good thermal stability and are fluorescent with maximum emission at approximately 400 nm, making them potential materials for blue-light emission.

RESUMO

Objective: There is a lack of literature about the joint effects of activities of daily living (ADL) limitation and cognitive impairment on depression. This study aimed to estimate the association of ADL limitation and cognitive impairment with depression among Chinese older adults aged 65 and above and to test their interaction on both additive and multiplicative scales. Methods: Data was drawn from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), including 11,025 eligible participants. Logistic regression models were fitted, and both multiplicative and additive interactions for ADL limitation and cognitive impairment were tested. Results: A total of 3,019(27.4%) participants reported depressive symptoms. After controlling for potential confounding factors, ADL limitation and cognitive impairment were both positively associated with depression. The adjusted additive interaction of basic and instrumental activities of daily living limitation were 2.47 (95%CI:1.92-3.19) and 3.67 (95%CI:2.88-4.66), respectively, but the multiplicative interaction items were both insignificant. Conclusion: ADL limitation and cognitive impairment were both risk factors for depression among Chinese older adults. Moreover, the significant interaction of ADL limitation and cognitive impairment was found in the additive model, suggesting that improving ADL may be helpful in reducing the risk of depression among older people with cognitive impairment.
