RESUMO

Organic electronics (OE) technology has matured in displays and is advancing in solid-state lighting applications. Other promising and growing uses of this technology are in (bio)chemical sensing, imaging, in vitro cell monitoring, and other biomedical diagnostics that can benefit from low-cost, efficient small devices, including wearable designs that can be fabricated on glass or flexible plastic. OE devices such as organic LEDs, organic and hybrid perovskite-based photodetectors, and organic thin-film transistors, notably organic electrochemical transistors, are utilized in such sensing and (bio)medical applications. The integration of compact and sensitive OE devices with microfluidic channels and lab-on-a-chip (LOC) structures is very promising. This survey focuses on studies that utilize this integration for a variety of OE tools. It is not intended to encompass all studies in the area, but to present examples of the advances and the potential of such OE technology, with a focus on microfluidics/LOC integration for efficient wide-ranging sensing and biomedical applications.

RESUMO

Integrated power ICs acting as smart power switches for automotive or industrial applications are often subjected to active thermal cycling. Consequently, they undergo significant self-heating and are prone to various failure mechanisms related to the electro-thermo-mechanical phenomena that take place in the device metallization. In this article a test structure consisting of a lateral DMOS transistor equipped with several integrated sensors is proposed for metallization fatigue assessment. The design of the test structure is presented in detail, alongside with design considerations drawn from the literature and from simulation results. The testing procedure is then described, and experimental results are discussed. The experimental data provided by the integrated sensors correlated with the electro-thermal simulation results indicate the emergence of a failure mechanism and this is later confirmed by failure analysis. Conclusions are further drawn regarding the feasibility of using the proposed integrated sensors for monitoring defects in power ICs.

RESUMO

Organ-on-chip devices have provided the pharmaceutical and tissue engineering worlds much hope since they arrived and began to grow in sophistication. However, limitations for their applicability were soon realized as they lacked real-time monitoring and sensing capabilities. The users of these devices relied solely on endpoint analysis for the results of their tests, which created a chasm in the understanding of life between the lab the natural world. However, this gap is being bridged with sensors that are integrated into organ-on-chip devices. This review goes in-depth on different sensing methods, giving examples for various research on mechanical, electrical resistance, and bead-based sensors, and the prospects of each. Furthermore, the review covers works conducted that use specific sensors for oxygen, and various metabolites to characterize cellular behavior and response in real-time. Together, the outline of these works gives a thorough analysis of the design methodology and sophistication of the current sensor integrated organ-on-chips.

RESUMO

On-chip devices for absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy have been developing rapidly in the last few years, triggered by the growing availability of compact and affordable tunable lasers, detectors, and on-chip spectrometers. Material processing that is compatible with mass production has been proven to be capable of long low-loss waveguides of sophisticated designs, which are indispensable for high-light-analyte interactions. Sensitivity and selectivity have been further improved by the development of sorbent cladding. In this review, we discuss the latest advances and challenges in the field of waveguide-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (WERS) and waveguide infrared absorption spectroscopy (WIRAS). The development of integrated light sources and detectors toward miniaturization will be presented, together with the recent advances on waveguides and cladding to improve sensitivity. The latest reports on gas-sensing applications and main configurations for WERS and WIRAS will be described, and the most relevant figures of merit and limitations of different sensor realizations summarized.

RESUMO

In order to realize the measurement of three-axis acceleration, pressure, and magnetic field, monolithic integrated three-axis acceleration/pressure/magnetic field sensors are proposed in this paper. The proposed sensors were constructed with an acceleration sensor consisting of four L-shaped double beams, two masses, middle double-beams, and twelve piezoresistors, a pressure sensor made of a square silicon membrane, and four piezoresistors, as well as a magnetic field sensor composed of five Hall elements. COMSOL software and TCAD-Atlas software were used to simulate characteristics of integrated sensors, and analyze the working principles of the sensors in measuring acceleration, pressure, and magnetic field. The integrated sensors were fabricated by using micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology and packaged by using inner lead bonding technology. When applying a working voltage of 5 V at room temperature, it is possible for the proposed sensors to achieve the acceleration sensitivities of 3.58 mV/g, 2.68 mV/g, and 9.45 mV/g along the x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis (through an amplifying circuit), and the sensitivities towards pressure and magnetic field are 0.28 mV/kPa and 22.44 mV/T, respectively. It is shown that the proposed sensors can measure three-axis acceleration, pressure, and magnetic field.

RESUMO

Volatile methylsiloxanes (VMSs) are common silicone degradation byproducts that cause serious concern for the contamination of sensitive electronics and optics, among others. With the goal of fast, online detection of VMS, we herein highlight the mesoporous MIL-101(Cr) MOF as a promising mass sensing layer for integration with a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), using an in-house modified gravimetric adsorption system capable of achieving extremely low concentrations of siloxane D4 (down to 0.04 ppm), targeting applications for monitoring in indoor spaces and spacecraft. Our developed MIL-101(Cr)@QCM sensor achieves near-perfect reversibility with no hysteresis alongside excellent repeatability over cycling and fast response/recovery times under 1 min. We attribute this capability to optimum host/guest interactions as uncovered through molecular simulations.

RESUMO

In this paper we show a novel design of high Q-factor silicon nitride (SiN) 1D photonic crystal (PhC) cavities side-coupled to curved waveguides, operating with both silica and air cladding. The engineering of the etched 1D PhC cavity sidewalls angle allows for high Q-factors over a wide range of upper cladding compositions, and the achievement of the highest calculated Q-factor for non-suspended asymmetric SiN PhC structures. We show the employment of these type of SiN PhC cavities in hybrid external cavity laser (HECL) configuration, with mode-hop free single mode laser operation over a broad range of injected currents (from 25 mA to 65 mA), milliwatts of power output (up to 9 mW) and side-mode suppression ratios in the range of 40 dB. We demonstrate the operation of these devices as compact and energy efficient optical sensors that respond to refractive index changes in the surrounding medium the measurement of sodium chloride (from 0% to 25%) and sucrose (from 0% to 25%) in aqueous solution. In HECL configuration, the RI sensor exhibits a 2 orders of magnitude improvement in detection limit compared to the passive microcavity. We also discuss the possibility for applying these devices as novel transducers for refractive index changes that are induced by analyte specific absorption of infrared radiation by the target analytes present in gas or liquid phase.

RESUMO

The pollution of indoor air is a major worldwide concern in our modern society for people's comfort, health, and safety. In particular, toluene, present in many substances including paints, thinners, candles, leathers, cosmetics, inks, and glues, affects the human health even at very low concentrations throughout its action on the central nervous system. Its prevalence in many workplace environments can fluctuate considerably, which led to firm regulation with exposure limits varying between 50 and 400 ppm depending on exposure time. This therefore requires the development of technologies for an accurate detection of this contaminant. Metal-organic frameworks have been proposed as promising candidates to detect and monitor a series of molecules at even extremely low concentrations owing to the high tunability of their functionality. Herein, a high-throughput Monte Carlo screening approach was devised to identify the best MOFs from the computation-ready, experimental (CoRE) metal-organic framework (MOF) density-derived electrostatic and chemical (DDEC) database for the selective capture of toluene from air at room temperature, with the consideration of a ternary mixture composed of extremely low-level concentration of toluene (10 ppm) in oxygen and nitrogen to mimic the composition of air. An aluminum MOF, DUT-4, with channel-like micropores was identified as an excellent candidate for the selective adsorption of toluene from air with a predicted adsorption uptake of 0.5 g/g at 10 ppm concentration and room temperature. The toluene adsorption behavior of DUT-4 at low equivalent concentrations, alongside its sensing performance, was further experimentally investigated by its incorporation in a quartz crystal microbalance sensor, confirming the promises of DUT-4. Decisively, the resulting high sensitivity and fast kinetics of our developed sensor highlight the applicability of this hand-in-hand computational-experimental methodology to porous material screening for sensing applications.

RESUMO

Soft actuators are a promising option for the advancing fields of human-machine interaction and dexterous robots in complex environments. Shape memory alloy wire actuators can be integrated into fiber rubber composites for highly deformable structures. For autonomous, closed-loop control of such systems, additional integrated sensors are necessary. In this work, a soft actuator is presented that incorporates fiber-based actuators and sensors to monitor both deformation and temperature. The soft actuator showed considerable deformation around two solid body joints, which was then compared to the sensor signals, and their correlation was analyzed. Both, the actuator as well as the sensor materials were processed by braiding and tailored fiber placement before molding with silicone rubber. Finally, the novel fiber-rubber composite material was used to implement closed-loop control of the actuator with a maximum error of 0.5°.

RESUMO

For the past three decades, total knee replacement has become the main solution for progressed knee injuries and diseases. Due to a lack of postoperative in vivo data, a universal correlation between intra- and postoperative soft tissue balance in the knee joint has not been established. In this work, an instrumented knee implant design with six piezoelectric transducers embedded in the tibial bearing is proposed. The aim of the presented device is to measure the total and compartmental forces as well as to track the location of contact points on the medial and lateral compartments of the bearing. A numerical analysis using finite element software is first performed to obtain the best sensory system arrangement inside the bearing. The chosen design is then used to fabricate a prototype of the device. Several experiments are designed and performed using the prototype, and the ability of the proposed system to track the location and magnitude of applied compartmental forces on the bearing is evaluated. The experimental results show that the instrumented knee bearing is able to accurately measure the compartmental force quantities with a maximum error of 2.6% of the peak axial load, and the contact point locations with a maximum error of less than 1 mm.

RESUMO

Skin is the largest organ of the human body, protecting it against the external environment. Despite high self-regeneration potential, severe skin defects will not heal spontaneously and need to be covered by skin substitutes. Tremendous progress has been made in the field of skin tissue engineering, in recent years, to develop new skin substitutes. Among them, hydrogels are one of the candidates with most potential to mimic the native skin microenvironment, due to their porous and hydrated molecular structure. They can be applied as a permanent or temporary dressing for different wounds to support the regeneration and healing of the injured epidermis, dermis, or both. Based on the material used for their fabrication, hydrogels can be subdivided into two main groups-natural and synthetic. Moreover, hydrogels can be reinforced by incorporating nanoparticles to obtain "in situ" hybrid hydrogels, showing superior properties and tailored functionality. In addition, different sensors can be embedded in hydrogel wound dressings to provide real-time information about the wound environment. This review focuses on the most recent developments in the field of hydrogel-based skin substitutes for skin replacement. In particular, we discuss the synthesis, fabrication, and biomedical application of novel "smart" hydrogels.

RESUMO

In this paper, a new method for the detection of apnea/hypopnea periods in physiological data is presented. The method is based on the intelligent combination of an integrated sensor system for long-time cardiorespiratory signal monitoring and dedicated signal-processing packages. Integrated sensors are a PVDF film and conductive fabric sheets. The signal processing package includes dedicated respiratory cycle (RC) and QRS complex detection algorithms and a new method using the respiratory cycle variability (RCV) for detecting apnea/hypopnea periods in physiological data. Results show that our method is suitable for online analysis of long time series data.

RESUMO

An integrated humidity sensor system with nano-structured carbon nitride film as humidity sensing material is fabricated by a 0.8 µm analog mixed CMOS process. The integrated sensor system consists of differential humidity sensitive field effect transistors (HUSFET), temperature sensor, and operational amplifier. The process contains two poly, two metal and twin well technology. To form CNx film on Si3N4/Si substrate, plasma etching is performed to the gate area as well as trenches. CNx film is deposited by reactive RF magnetron sputtering method and patterned by the lift-off technique. The drain current is proportional to the dielectric constant, and the sensitivity is 2.8 ㎂/%RH.

RESUMO

The modern civil aircrafts use air ventilation pressurized cabins subject to the limited space. In order to monitor multiple contaminants and overcome the hypersensitivity of the single sensor, the paper constructs an output correction integrated sensor configuration using sensors with different measurement theories after comparing to other two different configurations. This proposed configuration works as a node in the contaminant distributed wireless sensor monitoring network. The corresponding measurement error models of integrated sensors are also proposed by using the Kalman consensus filter to estimate states and conduct data fusion in order to regulate the single sensor measurement results. The paper develops the sufficient proof of the Kalman consensus filter stability when considering the system and the observation noises and compares the mean estimation and the mean consensus errors between Kalman consensus filter and local Kalman filter. The numerical example analyses show the effectiveness of the algorithm.
