RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The increase in the number of elderly people in the world, individuals' perspectives on older adults, and false beliefs and ideas about old age negatively affect adults in terms of ageing. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between fear of old age, loneliness and death anxiety in adults. METHOD: This study, which was designed in a correlational cross-sectional descriptive model, was conducted with 1074 adult individuals living in one province in eastern Turkey. Data were collected using Personal Information Form, Fear of Old Age Scale, UCLA Loneliness Scale and Turkish Death Anxiety Scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0, AMOS 24.0, G*Power 3.1 statistical package programs. RESULTS: In our study, it was determined that the model created in line with the hypotheses was compatible and the model fit indices were within the desired limits as χ2/df = 4.737, root mean square error of approximation = 0.05, comparative fit index = 0.93, goodness-of-fit index = 0.92, adjusted goodness-of-fit index = 0.90, IFI = 0.93. There is a significant relationship between loneliness and death anxiety (P < 0.05). There is a significant relationship between loneliness and fear of old age (P < 0.05). There is a significant relationship between death anxiety and fear of old age (P < 0.05). It was determined that death anxiety has a mediating role in the effect of loneliness on fear of old age (95% confidence interval: 0.112-0.226; P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: As the level of loneliness increases, the level of death anxiety and fear of old age increases. Fear of old age also increases in the mediating role of death anxiety. It is recommended to conduct intervention studies to reduce fear of old age. Longitudinal study on fear of old age is recommended.

RESUMO

The silver-cheeked toadfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus), an invasive alien pufferfish species that has rapidly settled throughout the Mediterranean region, poses significant threats not only to native marine species and fisheries but also to public health due to the tetrodotoxin (TTX) they harbor. In this study, TTX concentrations in L. sceleratus from Antalya Bay in the Northeastern Mediterranean Sea were investigated using Q-TOF-LC-MS on a monthly basis over a one-year period. Pufferfish were caught by angling from May 2018 to April 2019. The TTX levels in three different tissues (gonads, liver, and muscle) of 110 pufferfish in total were determined in both male and female individuals caught for 11 months. The highest TTX mean levels generally occurred in the gonads and the lowest in the muscle samples. As regards the maximum TTX contents, the highest concentrations determined were 68.2, 34.2, and 7.8 µg/g in the gonad, liver, and muscle tissues, respectively. The highest levels were generally observed in late autumn to winter (especially in November and December) in all tissues from both genders. Female individuals were generally found to be more toxic than male individuals. The TTX levels found confirm that the consumption of L. sceleratus from Antalya Bay remains dangerous throughout the year, and thus L. sceleratus constantly constitutes an important risk source for public health.

RESUMO

Fish (Engraulis encrasicolus) oil was successfully microencapsulated using sage essential oils prepared in three different concentrations as 1% (S1), 2% (S2) and 3% (S3). The microencapsulated fish oil powders fabricated with spray drying were stored at room temperature (24 ± 1 °C) in order to determine the oxidative deterioration for 12 weeks. The highest microencapsulation efficiency was observed in the S3 (60.17%) as compared with other groups. Although the changes in free fatty acid (FFA) values were defined between 6.04 and 9.29% at the end of the storage period, the lowest FFA value was found in S2 samples (p < 0.05). Among the microencapsulated samples, the highest peroxide value (PV) was measured as 20.24 meq O2/kg for S1 at the 11th week of the experimental period. Moreover, statistical differences between the control (25.93 meq O2/kg) and S1 samples were observed (p < 0.05). The rapid increase in the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value of fish powders was delayed by microencapsulation technique fabricated with spray drying. The use of sage essential oils within this combination effectively retarded the oxidation in fish oil powders at ambient storage, indicating cost-effective for the food industry. Therefore, encapsulation of fish oils with sage oil using the spray drying technique has improved oxidation stability of fish oil and can be used for food applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The effect of nanoemulsions prepared with grape seed and cinnamon essential oils on the shelf-life of flathead mullet (Mugil cephalus) fillets was evaluated by determining physicochemical (pH, free fatty acids, peroxide value, total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs)), sensory and microbiological (mesophilic aerobic bacteria, total psychrophilic bacteria, and Enterobacteriaceae counts) properties during 14 day storage at 2 °C. RESULTS: The nanoemulsions showed good stability and low average droplet size. The results indicated that nanoemulsion treatments significantly prolonged the shelf-life of the fillets. Treatment inhibited increases in pH and TVB-N, and retarded lipid oxidation and hydrolysis. Sensory assessment revealed that treatment induced shelf-life extension from 10 to 14 days, compared with controls. Microbiological analyses showed nanoemulsion treatment caused shelf-life extension from 10 to 12 days with reduction of microbiological contamination by up to 1 log cfu g-1 in mesophilic and 1.5 log cfu g-1 in psychrotrophic bacteria. CONCLUSION: Considering the results, grape seed and cinnamon essential oil nanoemulsions could be considered as novel antimicrobial and antioxidant materials for shelf-life extension of flathead mullet fillets during cold storage. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

The present study was conducted to determine the effect of spiritual care on the anxiety and depression levels of patients receiving hemodialysis treatment. The research was carried out between January and May 2019 in a training and research hospital hemodialysis unit in the Eastern Anatolian Region of Turkey. The research was completed with a total of 71 patients (33 experiments, 38 controls) who received hemodialysis treatment. Regarding in-group comparison, the difference between the mean scores of pre-test and post-test of the patients concerning the anxiety and depression in the experimental group was found to be statistically significant (p ˂ 0.05). It was determined that training for strengthening spirituality was effective in reducing the anxiety and depression levels of patients receiving hemodialysis treatment. It can be suggested that spiritual care should be used as a complementary method in health care practices to increase the effectiveness of the treatment.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to determine the hopelessness, loneliness and spiritual well-being of older adults and the relationship between these three concepts during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research used a cross-sectional, descriptive approach. Data were collected between October 13 and November 13, 2020, with 476 individuals over 65 years living in three different cities in Turkey. Data were collected using a demographic information form, Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), Loneliness Scale (UCLA-LS) and Spiritual Well-being Scale (FACIT-Sp). During the COVID-19 outbreak, it was found that there was a significant negative relationship between hopelessness, loneliness and spiritual well-being of older adults. In this study, it was found that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the level of hopelessness and loneliness among older adults was below the average score, and their spiritual well-being levels were moderate. Based on the findings of the present study, it is recommended that practices which increase hope, strengthen social ties and spiritual support, should be implemented for older individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic period or any other times during which social distancing is mandatory.

RESUMO

This study aims to examine the relationship between the levels of hopelessness, loneliness, and spiritual well-being of patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes during the process of COVID-19 outbreak. The study was carried out with diabetic patients living in three different cities that are in the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey between the dates of 15 of November and 30 of November 2020. The sample of the study consisted of 500 (Type 1, n = 218, Type 2, n = 282) diabetes patients. Data were collected using a demographic information form, Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), Loneliness Scale (UCLA-LS), and Spiritual Well-being Scale (FACIT-Sp). While the mean scores of hopelessness and loneliness of type 1 patients were below the moderate level, the mean scores of their spiritual well-being were found to be above the moderate level. Moreover, while the mean scores of hopelessness and loneliness in type 2 patients were below the moderate level, the mean scores of their spiritual well-being were found above the moderate level. A significant relationship was found between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes patients' levels of hopelessness, loneliness, and spiritual well-being during the COVID-19 outbreak. It was found that as the spiritual well-being levels of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetic patients increased, the levels of their loneliness and hopelessness decreased. It is recommended that mass communication that includes spiritual care practices can be used effectively to reduce diabetes patients' levels of loneliness and hopelessness during the pandemic. In addition, while providing care to diabetes patients, it can be suggested that health professionals offer a holistic approach with initiatives that will increase diabetes patients' spiritual well-being.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between pregnant women's fear of coronavirus (COVID-19), depression, and spiritual well-being. This cross-sectional research was carried out with 336 pregnant women living in a city in the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey between the 1st of March and 30th of March 2021. For data collection, the scales of the Fear of COVID-19, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Spiritual Well-being were administered to the participants. The pregnant women's fear of COVID-19 was found to be at a moderate level, their depression was at a mild level, and their spiritual well-being was above the moderate level. It was found that there was a significant negative correlation between the spiritual well-being levels of pregnant women and their fear of COVID-19 and depression. Moreover, it was also found that there was a significant positive correlation between pregnant women's levels of fear of COVID-19 and depression (p < 0.001). It is recommended that relevant spiritual care practices can be disseminated and implemented effectively to reduce pregnant women's fear and depression during the pandemic. In addition, when providing care to pregnant women, health professionals can adopt a holistic approach to increase pregnant women's spiritual well-being.

RESUMO

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of nanoemulsions prepared with various concentrations of olive oil on the sensory, chemical and microbiological quality of rainbow trout fillets. The results showed that the shelf life of rainbow trout fillets were determined as 10 days for the control, 12 days for tween 80 group, 14 days for the 15% olive oil nanoemulsion group (O15) and 16 days for both 30% (O30) and 45% olive oil nanoemulsion groups (O45). It was determined that the use of olive oil suppressed the fish smell and improved the organoleptic quality of fish fillets, extending shelf life. Best sensory results were obtained from O30 and O45 treatment groups. The use of nanoemulsion had a positive effect on the biochemical parameters (TVB-N, PV, FFA, TBARs and pH), as well as inhibiting bacterial growth compared to the control group. Among nanoemulsion groups, the lowest bacteria content was found in O45 group. As a result, O30 and O45 treatment groups can be recommended for the preservation of fish fillets.

RESUMO

This study aimed at comparing the elemental levels of muscle and liver tissues of four pufferfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus, Lagocephalus spadiceus, Lagocephalus suezensis, and Torquigener flavimaculosus), which are common in the Northeastern Mediterranean Sea (Mersin Bay), in terms of sex and seasonal variables. Na, Mg, P, K, and Ca levels in the muscle tissues of pufferfish range from 1848.4 to 16495.7, 824.4 to 2684.5, 6936.2 to 20486.6, 13019.3 to 36165.5, and 276.4 to 5566.5 µg g-1, respectively. Na, Mg, P, K, and Ca levels in the liver tissues of pufferfish range from 531.8 to 6136.1, 63.8 to 899.1, 773.1 to 6677.5, 1151.4 to 10165.4, and 47.4 to 1607.7 µg g-1, respectively. The levels of macroelements in the muscle and liver tissues can be represented as K > P ≥ Na > Ca ≥ Mg and K ≥ P ≥ Na > Ca ≥ Mg, respectively. Pufferfish muscle tissue has more abundant macroelement levels than liver tissue. Fe, Cu, and Zn levels in pufferfish muscle tissues range from 21.53 to 219.42, 0.73 to 6.54, and 25.38 to 100.47 µg g-1, respectively. Fe, Cu, and Zn levels in pufferfish liver tissues range from 157.8 to 1368.6, 0.86 to 11.23, and 23.17 to 507.75 µg g-1, respectively. Levels of trace elements in the muscle and liver tissues can be represented as Zn ≥ Fe > Cu and Fe ≥ Zn > Cu, respectively. The pufferfish liver tissue is richer than muscle tissue in terms of trace element levels. Cd, Pb, As, and Cr levels in pufferfish muscle tissues range from 0.66 to 6.30, 2.17 to 20.76, 41.90 to 258.37, and 0.34 to 3.70 µg g-1, respectively. Cd, Pb, As, and Cr levels in the liver tissues of pufferfish range from 0.22 to 2.34, 0.17 to 2.27, 9.35 to 61.93, and 0.14 to 2.10 µg g-1, respectively. Levels of metal in the muscle and liver tissues can be represented as As > Pb > Cd ≥ Cr and As > Cd ≥ Pb ≥ Cr, respectively. Pufferfish muscle tissue has a higher association with liver tissue due to metal level accumulation. All pufferfish are contaminated by Cd, Pb, As, Cr, Fe, and Zn metals.

RESUMO

To evaluate the changes in ocular surface and functions of tear-film in patients treated with systemic isotretinoin, to assess diagnostic performance of ocular surface disease index (OSDI) test in the dry eye conditions in association with the use of isotretinoin, and to determine the correlation between all tear-film function tests, OSDI and the dose and duration of isotretinoin administration. One hundred and twenty eyes of 60 subjects treated with oral isotretinoin were enrolled. All patients underwent ophthalmic examination at the baseline and another examination during the course of treatment. Biomicroscopic ophthalmic examination of the meibomian glands, non-anesthetized Schirmer test, and tear film break-up time (BUT) were performed. Subjective ocular complaints were scored with an OSDI questionnaire. Average Schirmer scores were not significantly changed by isotretinoin treatment. There were significant differences in the average OSDI score, the average meibomian gland disease (MGD) grade and average BUT value of both eyes during the treatment compared with baseline values (p < 0.01). There was a statistically significant inverse correlation between MGD grade and BUT value. There was no significant correlation between BUT value, OSDI score, Schirmer score, MGD grade, the total and divided dose of isotretinoin and the duration of treatment. The follow-up time was 4.01 ± 1.3 months (range 1.5-6 months). Systemic isotretinoin treatment can cause alterations in the tear film and dry eye symptoms. The OSDI test can be used as a diagnostic test for patients receiving systemic isotretinoin treatment.

RESUMO

To investigate the accuracy of the measurements of Nidek AL-Scan by comparing with Sirius (CSO, Florence, Italy), a corneal tomography which also employs the Scheimpflug principle, and a commonly used device, ultrasound biometry (UB) (Aviso A/B, Quantel Medical, MT, USA). Right eyes of 85 healthy volunteers (58 women 27 men) with a mean age of 39.24 ± 14.37 years (range 15-68) were enrolled into this comparative prospective study. Average K 2.4, average K 3.3, CCT (central corneal thickness), WTW (white to white distance), ACD (anterior chamber depth) and AL (axial length) were obtained from the AL-Scan and compared with average SimK, CCT, WTW (horizontal anterior chamber diameter) and ACD obtained from Sirius and also compared with ACD and AL obtained from UB. The statistically significant difference was found between all of the measurements (p < 0.001) except the average keratometry values (K2.4, K3.3, SimK) (p = 0.083). There was a perfect correlation between keratometry, CCT and AL measurements of the devices (ICC = 0.977, 0.954, 0.923, respectively) and there was a strong correlation between the WTW measurements of AL-Scan and Sirius (ICC = 0.865). While ACD parameter of AL-Scan and UB showed a perfect correlation (ICC = 0.977), there was a moderate correlation between AL-Scan and Sirius and also between UB and Sirius (ICC = 0.608 and 0.664, respectively). There was a high correlation between the all measurements, besides ACD, of AL-Scan and Sirius and they can be used interchangeably for average keratometry and WTW confidently. However, ACD and CCT have a broader 95 % LoA (-0.039 to 0.744 and -24.985 to 3.691, respectively). In addition, AL-Scan and UB were in good agreement regarding ACD, while differences in AL measurements of UB and AL-Scan were clinically important (95 % LoA = -0.091 to 0.703). Furthermore, UB and Sirius have a moderate agreement regarding ACD (95 % LoA = -0.047 to 0.680).

RESUMO

After intravitreal ranibizumab injection for diabetic macular edema (DME) in a 55-year-old man, the patient was admitted to our ophthalmology clinic with the complaint of diplopia. Given the results of the patient's history, physical exam, and negative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we believed that the patient had a sixth nerve palsy related to ranibizumab injection. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case with isolated abducens palsy after ranibizumab injection.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Vitamin B(12) deficiency is a worldwide problem. It affects all ages, including children. It is one of the most common nutritional disorders and can cause harmful effects on the nervous system. In this study, we compared the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) in a healthy control group with children with vitamin B(12) deficiency. In our study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of vitamin B(12) deficiency on the RNFLT in children with the optical coherence tomography (OCT) method. METHODS: Sixty-six children with a diagnosis of vitamin B(12) deficiency (patient group) and 66 age- and sex-matched healthy children (control group) were enrolled in this prospectively designed study. Blood counts, vitamin B(12) levels, folate levels, and full biochemical parameters were obtained for all the subjects in each group. Peripapillary RNFLT measurements were performed with Cirrus HD spectral domain OCT. RESULTS: The thickness of the superior retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) in the vitamin B(12) deficiency group was significantly lower than that of the control group (p = 0.037). Although the average thickness of the RNFL was lower in the patient group, there was no statistically significant differences (p = 0.216). In the vitamin B(12) deficiency group, the average RNFL thickness and the superior RNFL thickness were significantly correlated with vitamin B(12) levels ((r1) = 0.353, (p1) < 0.004 and (r2) = 0.416, (p2) = 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: Our study showed that a deficiency in vitamin B(12), elsewhere it is important for the development of the central nervous system, is associated with a reduction in the thickness of the superior RNFL.

RESUMO

Dopaminergic neuronal cells have been identified in the inner nuclear and inner plexiform layers of the human retina. The dopaminergic content of the retina is reduced in patients with idiopathic Parkinson disease (PD). These observations led us to study the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in patients with PD without visual impairment compared to healthy controls using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Eighty-two subjects, including 42 patients with PD, newly diagnosed and untreated (24 men, 18 women, age range: 47-66 years), and 40 healthy controls, were enrolled. Both eyes of patients with PD and controls were imaged with SD-OCT. The mean RNFL thickness was 77 ± 11.5 µm in PD patients and 89 ± 8.7 µm in healthy controls (P = 0.001). Selective thinning of the RNFL was found in the temporal region with mean temporal RNFL thickness of 66 ± 6.7 µm in PD patients and 75 ± 4.8 µm in controls (P = 0.001). The thickness of the RNFL is decreased in PD patients. Demonstrating progressive thinning of RNFL over time will be critical for validating optical coherence tomography as a viable biomarker of patients with PD.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) without visual impairment using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and to compare the results with healthy controls. A total of 80 subjects, including 40 patients with early untreated AD (mean age, 69.3 ± 4.9 years) and 40 healthy controls (mean age, 68.9 ± 5.1 years) were enrolled. Both eyes of patients with AD and controls were imaged using SD-OCT. The average RNFL thickness was significantly less in the AD patients than in controls (65 ± 6.2 µm vs 75 ± 3.8µm; P = 0.001). There was selective thinning of the RNFL in the superior quadrant, the mean superior quadrant RNFL thickness being 76 ± 6.7 µm in AD patients and 105 ± 4.8 µm in controls (P = 0.001). In our study, the thickness of RNFL in patient with AD was lower than that of controls. This suggests that SD- OCT has the potential to be used in the early diagnosis of AD as well as in the study of therapeutic agents. Further studies are needed to validate this technology as a viable ocular biomarker over time in AD.

RESUMO

The fatty acid composition of top-selling fish oil dietary supplements in the markets was compared with the content stated on product label, and their oxidative qualities and heavy metal contents were evaluated in this study. While all the capsule groups (C) confirmed the label information, it was observed that one-third of the syrup groups (S) had less than the specified content. Capsule groups generally had richer EPA and DHA contents than syrup groups in the samples examined. The peroxide values (PV) of all fish oil capsules and syrups were found in the range of 1.97-2.89 mEq/kg and 2.22-18.30 mEq/kg, respectively. As for free fatty acids (FFA) values, the C4, S6, S9, and S10 groups were above the 3% oleic acid limit recommended for high-quality oils. However, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs) values were found below 1 mg MA/kg in all groups. All fish oil supplements were within the limits specified in terms of As (0.50-4.19 µg/g), Cd (0.14 µg/g detected for one group, C5), Cu (not detected), Fe (0.32-15.7 µg/g), and Hg (≤ 0.1 µg/g). On the other hand, two fish oil supplements from the capsule group (0.17 for C6 and 1.01 µg/g for C8) and one group from the syrup group (0.29 µg/g for S10) exceeded the recommended limit in terms of Pb (0.1 mg/kg). As a result of the research, it can be concluded that the chemical quality of fish oils in syrup form needs to be improved and their reliability in terms of fatty acid content should be increased. Considering the heavy metals, it seems significant to follow up the fish oil products more strictly.

RESUMO

Nanotechnology is being utilized in various industries to increase the quality, safety, shelf-life, and functional performance of commercial products. Nanoemulsions are thermodynamically unstable colloidal dispersions that consist of at least two immiscible liquids (typically oil and water), as well as various stabilizers (including emulsifiers, texture modifiers, ripening inhibitors, and weighting agents). They have unique properties that make them particularly suitable for some applications, including their small droplet size, high surface area, good physical stability, rapid digestibility, and high bioavailability. This article reviews recent developments in the formulation, fabrication, functional performance, and gastrointestinal fate of nanoemulsions suitable for use in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, nutraceutical, and food industries, as well as providing an overview of regulatory and health concerns. Nanoemulsion-based delivery systems can enhance the water-dispersibility, stability, and bioavailability of hydrophobic bioactive compounds. Nevertheless, they must be carefully formulated to obtain the required functional attributes. In particular, the concentration, size, charge, and physical properties of the nano-droplets must be taken into consideration for each specific application. Before launching a nanoscale product onto the market, determination of physicochemical characteristics of nanoparticles and their potential health and environmental risks should be evaluated. In addition, legal, consumer, and economic factors must also be considered when creating these systems.

RESUMO

The effects of citrus essential oils (orange, lemon, mandarin, and grapefruit) on the oxidative stability of microencapsulated fish oil by spray-drying were evaluated. The encapsulation efficiency of microcapsules was in the range of 42.25 and 62.43%. Twelve active substances were determined as major volatile components of citrus essential oils. The highest phenolic content was obtained from grapefruit essential oil (44.32 mg GAE/g). Lower values of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs) were obtained for microencapsulated fish oils with essential oils compared to control. At the end of storage, the highest peroxide value (PV) was observed in the control group (25.30 meq O2/kg oil) while the lowest value was in the lemon (13.40 meq O2/kg oil) and orange group (13.91 meq O2/kg oil). The results of this study showed that citrus essential oils can be used to improve the oxidative stability of fish oil microcapsules.

RESUMO

We report on a patient who developed corneal haze and permanent ptosis after strabismus surgery. Formaldehyde-disinfected sodium hyaluronate which was used to protect the corneal epithelium during surgery was thought to have induced keratopathy and other findings. To our knowledge, this is the first report of corneal haze formation together with ptosis secondary to formaldehyde toxicity as a complication of strabismus surgery.
