RESUMO

AIM: Aberrant expression of ATPase sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic retic Ca2+ transporting 2 (ATP2A2) has attracted attention for its pathophysiologic role in pulmonary hypertension (PH). Several miRNAs, including miR-210-5p, have also been reported to be pathogenic factors in PH, but their exact mechanisms remain unknown. This study aimed to elucidate the potential mechanisms of miR-210-5p and ATP2A2 in MCT-induced PH. METHODS: Eighteen Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups-monoclonal (MCT) group and control group-and then administered MCT (60 mg/kg) and saline, respectively. mPAP, PVR, RVHI, WT%, and WA% were significantly increased in PH rats after 3 weeks, confirming that the modeling of PH rats was successful. Subsequently, we determined the expression of ATP2A2 and miR-210-5p in lung tissues using WB and qRT-PCR methods. We established an in vitro model using BMP4 and TGF-ß1 treatment of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) and examined the expression of ATP2A2 and miR-210-5p using the same method. To further elucidate the regulatory relationship between ATP2A2 and miR-210-5p, we altered the expression level of miR-210-5p and detected the corresponding changes in ATP2A2 levels. In addition, we demonstrated the relationship by dual luciferase experiments. Finally, the effect of silencing ATP2A2 could be confirmed by the level of cell membrane Ca2+ in PAMSCs. RESULTS: Up-regulation of miR-210-5p and down-regulation of ATP2A2 were observed in the MCT group compared with the control group, which was confirmed in the in vitro model. In addition, elevated miR-210-5p expression decreased the level of ATP2A2 while increasing the proliferation of PASMCs, and the results of the dual luciferase assay further confirmed that ATP2A2 is a downstream target of miR-210-5p. Additionally, silencing ATP2A2 resulted in increased cytoplasmic Ca2+ levels in PAMSCs. CONCLUSION: In MCT-induced PH, miR-210-5p promotes pulmonary vascular remodeling by inhibiting ATP2A2.

RESUMO

Pancake virtual reality head-mounted displays (VR-HMDs) have attracted the attention of researchers in both academia and industry because of the compact size and light weight. However, owing to the use of optical path folding, there exist various stray lights in the optical system, which seriously degrades user experience. In this study, we analyze the causes and effects of multiple types of stray light systematically and design a VR-HMD with low stray light, large exit pupil diameter (EPD), compact form and light weight. Subsequently, several effective stray light suppression solutions are proposed and implemented. Finally, a prototype of a compact pancake VR-HMD system is successfully demonstrated. The prototype has stray light of less than 2.3%, a diagonal field of view (FOV) of 96° and an EPD of 10 mm at an 11 mm eye relief (ERF).

RESUMO

Virtual reality head-mounted displays (VR-HMDs) are crucial to Metaverse which appears to be one of the most popular terms to have been adopted over the internet recently. It provides basic infrastructure and entrance to cater for the next evolution of social interaction, and it has already been widely used in many fields. The VR-HMDs with traditional aspherical or Fresnel optics are not suitable for long-term usage because of the image quality, system size, and weight. In this study, we designed and developed a large exit pupil diameter (EPD), compact, and lightweight VR-HMD with catadioptric optics. The mathematical formula for designing the catadioptric VR optics is derived. The reason why this kind of immersive VR optics could achieve a compact size and large EPD simultaneously is answered. Various catadioptric forms are systematically proposed and compared. The design can achieve a diagonal field of view (FOV) of 96° at -1 diopter, with an EPD of 10 mm at 11 mm eye relief (ERF). The overall length (OAL) of the system was less than 20 mm. A prototype of a compact catadioptric VR-HMD system was successfully developed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Despite renewed interest in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA), there is a paucity of published literature with regard to patient satisfaction after UKA within Asian populations. The purpose of this study is to identify characteristics and factors which may contribute to patient dissatisfaction after UKA in a multiracial Asian population. METHODS: Seven hundred twenty-four UKAs were performed between January 2007 and April 2013. Preoperative and postoperative variables were prospectively captured, such as standardized knee scores, knee range of motion, and patient satisfaction scores. These variables were then analyzed with a multiple logistic regression model to determine statistically significant factors contributing to patients' satisfaction. RESULTS: Minimum duration of follow-up was 2 years, with an overall patient satisfaction rate of 92.2%. There was improvement in mean knee range of motion and across various standardized knee scores. Preoperative variables associated with patient dissatisfaction included a poorer preoperative Mental Component Summary, better preoperative knee extension, and better preoperative Oxford Knee Scores. Significant postoperative variables included better Oxford Knee Score at 6 months and Mental Component Summary at 2 years. CONCLUSION: Despite the impressive patient satisfaction rate of UKA in this Asian population, these findings suggest that there is a targeted group of patients with select preoperative factors who would benefit from preoperative counseling.

RESUMO

The Sengkang General Hospital Orthopaedic Spine Outpatient Service is facing a growing challenge of increasing number of referrals and waiting times, placing a significant burden on the system. Primary care referrals have an average wait time of 61.1 days, with 34.5%f patients waiting longer than 60 days from referral to appointment, to see a spine physician.Back pain is a very common presentation, with the vast majority resolving after conservative management which commonly includes analgesia, physiotherapy and reassurance. Unfortunately, many referrals from primary care involve patients who have yet to explore the avenues of conservative management with 90% of our referrals being managed without surgery. Globally, triage services in Western countries conducted by allied health professionals have shown to be an effective method at addressing the escalating wait times with high satisfaction rates. We have endeavoured to emulate this within our department through the implementation of the Spine Triage and Rehabilitation (STAR) Clinic. The STAR clinic aims to empower physiotherapists with the ability to triage patients into surgical and non-surgical categories with their primary physiotherapy expertise to reduce waiting times and increase outpatient capacity.More than 300 patients were recruited, and their progress was tracked over 13 months under the four Ss of: waiting timeS, cost Savings, Safety and patient Satisfaction. This pilot study has been overwhelmingly positive, with significantly reduced waiting times and high cost savings, without any compromise on patient safety and satisfaction.

RESUMO

Antibiotics are widely used to treat bacterial infection and reduce the mortality rate, while antibiotic overuse can cause gut microbiota dysbiosis. The impact of antibiotics on gut microbiota is not fully understood. In our study, four commonly used antibiotics (ceftazidime, cefoperazone-sulbactam, imipenem-cilastatin, and moxifloxacin) were given subcutaneously to mice, and their impacts on the gut microbiota composition and serum cytokine levels were evaluated through 16S rRNA analysis and a multiplex immunoassay. Antibiotic treatment markedly reduced gut microbiota diversity and changed gut microbiota composition. Antibiotic treatment significantly increased and decreased the abundance of Firmicutes and Bacteroidota, respectively. The antibiotic treatments increased the abundance of opportunistic pathogens such as Enterococcus and decreased that of Lachnospiraceae and Muribaculaceae. For moxifloxacin, the significantly high abundance of Enterococcus and Klebsiella was observed after 14 and 21 days of treatment. However, a relatively low abundance of opportunistic pathogens was found after 14 days of imipenem-cilastatin treatment. Additionally, the serum levels of various pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1ß, IL-12 (p70), and IL-17, significantly increased after 21 days of antibiotic treatments. Overall, these results provide a guide for rational use of antibiotics in clinical settings: short-term use of moxifloxacin is recommended with regard to gut microbiota health, and the 14-day use of imipenem-cilastatin may have a less severe impact than other antibiotics.IMPORTANCEAntibiotic treatments are directly associated with changes in gut microbiota and are effective against both pathogens and beneficial bacteria. Gut microbiota dysbiosis induced by antibiotic treatment could increase the risk of some diseases. Therefore, an adequate understanding of gut microbiota changes after antibiotic use is crucial. In this study, we investigated the effects of continuous treatment with antibiotics on gut microbiota, serum cytokines, and intestinal inflammatory response. Our results suggest that short-term use of moxifloxacin is recommended, and the 14-day use of imipenem-cilastatin may have a less severe effect on gut microbiota health than cefoperazone-sulbactam. These results provide useful guidance on the rational use of antibiotics with regard to gut microbiota health.

RESUMO

Spider silk is a promising material with great potential in biomedical applications due to its incredible mechanical properties and resistance to degradation of commercially available bacterial strains. However, little is known about the bacterial communities that may inhabit spider webs and how these microorganisms interact with spider silk. In this study, we exposed two exopolysaccharide-secreting bacteria, isolated from webs of an orb spider, to major ampullate (MA) silk from host spiders. The naturally occurring lipid and glycoprotein surface layers of MA silk were experimentally removed to further probe the interaction between bacteria and silk. Extensibility of major ampullate silk produced by Triconephila clavata that was exposed to either Microbacterium sp. or Novosphigobium sp. was significantly higher than that of silk that was not exposed to bacteria (differed by 58.7%). This strain-enhancing effect was not observed when the lipid and glycoprotein surface layers of MA silks were removed. The presence of exopolysaccharides was detected through NMR from MA silks exposed to these two bacteria but not from those without exposure. Here we report for the first time that exopolysaccharide-secreting bacteria inhabiting spider webs can enhance extensibility of host MA silks and silk surface layers play a vital role in mediating such effects.

RESUMO

Background: Glycogen Storage disease type 4 (GSD4), a rare disease caused by glycogen branching enzyme 1 (GBE1) deficiency, affects multiple organ systems including the muscles, liver, heart, and central nervous system. Here we report a GSD4 patient, who presented with severe hepatosplenomegaly and cardiac ventricular hypertrophy. GBE1 sequencing identified two variants: a known pathogenic missense variant, c.1544G>A (p.Arg515His), and a missense variant of unknown significance (VUS), c.2081T>A (p. Ile694Asn). As a liver transplant alone can exacerbate heart dysfunction in GSD4 patients, a precise diagnosis is essential for liver transplant indication. To characterize the disease-causing variant, we modeled patient-specific GBE1 deficiency using CRISPR/Cas9 genome-edited induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Methods: iPSCs from a healthy donor (iPSC-WT) were genome-edited by CRISPR/Cas9 to induce homozygous p.Ile694Asn in GBE1 (iPSC-GBE1-I694N) and differentiated into hepatocytes (iHep) or cardiomyocytes (iCM). GBE1 enzyme activity was measured, and PAS-D staining was performed to analyze polyglucosan deposition in these cells. Results: iPSCGBE1-I694N differentiated into iHep and iCM exhibited reduced GBE1 protein level and enzyme activity in both cell types compared to iPSCwt. Both iHepGBE1-I694N and iCMGBE1-I694N showed polyglucosan deposits correlating to the histologic patterns of the patient's biopsies. Conclusions: iPSC-based disease modeling supported a loss of function effect of p.Ile694Asn in GBE1. The modeling of GBE1 enzyme deficiency in iHep and iCM cell lines had multi-organ findings, demonstrating iPSC-based modeling usefulness in elucidating the effects of novel VUS in ultra-rare diseases.

RESUMO

Aerogels prepared using freeze-drying methods have the potential to be insulation materials or absorbents in the fields of industry, architecture, agriculture, etc., for their low heat conductivity, high specific area, low density, degradability, and low cost. However, their native, poor water resistance caused by the hydrophilicity of their polymer matrix limits their practical application. In this work, a novel, controllable, and efficient templating method was utilized to construct a highly hydrophobic surface for freeze-drying aerogels. The influence of templates on the macroscopic morphology and hydrophobic properties of materials was investigated in detail. This method provided the economical and rapid preparation of a water-resistant aerogel made from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and montmorillonite (MMT), putting forward a new direction for the research and development of new, environmentally friendly materials.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The objectives of this study are to: (1) investigate the extent of antagonistic and distal neighboring tooth migration in the maxillary posterior single tooth-missing site during the healing period of bone augmentation and implant surgery; (2) identify factors associated with tooth migration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and forty-three cases that lost the maxillary first molar were included, and their CBCT data during the edentulous period were obtained. Dentition models were reconstructed from CBCT, and superimpositions were performed, followed by measuring migration distances and calculating migration rates of antagonistic and distal neighboring teeth. Factors were analyzed using multivariate generalized estimating equations (GEE). RESULTS: The mean migration distances were 208 ± 137 µm and 403 ± 605 µm for antagonistic teeth and distal teeth, and the mean migration rates were 26.8 ± 21.2 µm/month and 48.5 ± 76.7 µm/month, respectively. One hundred and nineteen out of 143 distal neighboring teeth migrated toward the edentulous site, and all antagonistic teeth migrated occlusally. Occlusal contact loss and chronic apical periodontitis both significantly accelerated antagonistic tooth migration (p < 0.05), the latter also accelerated distal tooth migration (p < 0.05). Besides, the displacement of the distal teeth was somewhat accelerated by the impacted adjacent third molar and root protrusion into the sinus. CONCLUSIONS: The neighboring teeth tend to migrate toward the edentulous gap in the maxillary posterior region. Occlusal contact loss and chronic apical periodontitis are two significant risk factors for accelerating antagonistic tooth migration, and for distal teeth, chronic apical periodontitis is the risk factor. The impacted adjacent third molar and root protrusion into the sinus are also potential risk factors for accelerating the migration of the maxillary distal tooth. Thus, to prevent maxillary edentulous gap reduction, the factors mentioned above should be taken into consideration when planning treatment flow.

RESUMO

Background: Previous studies have related circulating levels of trace metal elements, of which dietary intake is the major source, to cognitive outcomes. However, there are still relatively few studies evaluating the associations of dietary intake levels of iron, copper, zinc, and manganese with cognitive function (CF). Methods: We leveraged the data of 6863 participants (mean [standard deviation] age = 66.7 [10.5] years) in the Health and Retirement Study (2013/2014). Dietary intake levels of iron, copper, zinc, and manganese were calculated from a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. CF was assessed using the 27-point modified Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (TICS). We used linear regression models to calculate the mean differences in global CF scores by quintiles of dietary intake levels of trace metal elements. Results: Among the study participants, the mean (SD) values of daily dietary intake were 13.3 (6.3) mg for iron, 1.4 (0.7) mg for copper, 10.7 (4.6) mg for zinc, and 3.3 (1.6) mg for manganese. Compared with the lowest quintile of dietary iron intake (<8.1 mg), the highest quintile (≥17.7 mg) was associated with a lower cognitive score (-0.50, -0.94 to -0.06, P-trend = 0.007). Higher dietary copper was significantly associated with poorer CF (P-trend = 0.002), and the mean difference in cognitive score between extreme quintiles (≥1.8 vs. <0.8 mg) was -0.52 (95% confidence interval: -0.94 to -0.10) points. We did not observe significant associations for dietary intake of zinc (P-trend = 0.785) and manganese (P-trend = 0.368). Conclusion: In this cross-sectional study, higher dietary intake of iron and copper was related to worse CF, but zinc and manganese intake levels were not significantly associated with CF.

RESUMO

The purpose was to investigate the contents of heat-induced hazards by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) in 44 commercial nuts. Results showed that content ranges of Acrylamide (AA), 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), Nε-carboxymethyl-lysine (CML), Nε-carboxyethyl-lysine (CEL), 3-Deoxyglucosone (3-DG), Glyoxal (GO), and Methylglyoxal (MGO) were ND-123.57 µg/kg, 0.57-213.42 mg/kg, 3.18-18.67 mg/kg, 3.98-57.85 mg/kg, 1.5-133.86 mg/kg, 0.45-1.59 mg/kg and 0.29-13.84 mg/kg, respectively. Sunflower seeds contained more heat-induced hazards followed by pistachios, cashews, almonds, walnuts and hazelnuts. The content of 5-HMF was positively correlated with the content of 3-DG. CML exhibited positive correlation with content of GO while no correlation between CEL and MGO. Higher levels of 3-DG and 5-HMF were observed in nuts produced with sugar and honey. Deep processing had a stronger promoting effect on CML and CEL formation. These data could provide a crucial guide for consumers to select nut products which might reduce heat-induced hazards intake.

RESUMO

STUDY DESIGN: A systematic review. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of coexisting lumbar spondylosis (LS) and knee osteoarthritis (KOA), which has clinical implications on the screening, diagnosis, and management of orthopedic patients. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Due to current global health trends, the number of affected patients is expected to increase substantially. However, no prior systematic reviews have discussed this topic. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in June 2021 in the PubMed, Embase, Scopus, CINAHL, and Cochrane CENTRAL databases. Clinical and epidemiological studies that reported quantitative data on the prevalence of coexisting LS and KOA were included. Studies which reported data on only LS or KOA alone were excluded. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for LS or KOA were retrieved or calculated for meta-analysis. Fixed-effects and random-effects models were used, and statistical significance was considered when p<0.05. Heterogeneity was evaluated using Cochran's Q test and the I2 statistic. Risk of bias was assessed using the MINORs (methodological index for nonrandomized studies) criteria. RESULTS: This review included nine studies (5,758 patients). Four studies (4,164 patients) defined KOA and LS by a Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grade of ≥2 and were included in the meta-analysis. Two other studies defined KOA and LS by a joint space narrowing grade of ≥2. The remaining three studies reported other outcomes. The combined ORs of having KOA of KL grade ≥2 due to LS was 1.75 (95% CI, 1.22-2.50; p=0.002), while the combined OR of having LS of KL grade ≥2 due to KOA was 1.84 (95% CI, 1.23-2.77; p=0.003). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with either KOA or LS, the odds of having a concurrent knee-spine presentation are significantly increased. This may have implications for clinical decision-making and treatment strategies. Further high-level studies with larger patient populations are required to confirm these results in specific populations.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is one of the top ten causes of death globally and the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent. Eradicating the Tuberculosis epidemic by 2030 is one of the top United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Early diagnosis is essential to achieving this goal because it improves individual prognosis and reduces transmission rates of asymptomatic infected. We aim to support this goal by developing rapid and sensitive diagnostics using machine learning algorithms to minimize the need for expert intervention. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A single molecule fluorescence immunosorbent assay was used to detect Tuberculosis biomarker lipoarabinomannan from a set of twenty clinical patient samples and a control set of spiked human urine. Tuberculosis status was separately confirmed by GeneXpert MTB/RIF and cell culture. Two machine learning algorithms, an automatic and a semiautomatic model, were developed and trained by the calibrated lipoarabinomannan titration assay data and then tested against the ground truth patient data. The semiautomatic model differed from the automatic model by an expert review step in the former, which calibrated the lower threshold to determine single molecules from background noise. The semiautomatic model was found to provide 88.89% clinical sensitivity, while the automatic model resulted in 77.78% clinical sensitivity. CONCLUSIONS: The semiautomatic model outperformed the automatic model in clinical sensitivity as a result of the expert intervention applied during calibration and both models vastly outperformed manual expert counting in terms of time-to-detection and completion of analysis. Meanwhile, the clinical sensitivity of the automatic model could be improved significantly with a larger training dataset. In short, semiautomatic, and automatic Gaussian Mixture Models have a place in supporting rapid detection of Tuberculosis in resource-limited settings without sacrificing clinical sensitivity.

RESUMO

In thermoelectrics, entropy engineering as an emerging paradigm-shifting strategy can simultaneously enhance the crystal symmetry, increase the solubility limit of specific elements, and reduce the lattice thermal conductivity. However, the severe lattice distortion in high-entropy materials blocks the carrier transport and hence results in an extremely low carrier mobility. Herein, the design principle for selecting alloying species is introduced as an effective strategy to compensate for the deterioration of carrier mobility in GeTe-based alloys. It demonstrates that high configurational entropy via progressive MnZnCdTe3 and Sb co-alloying can promote the rhombohedral-cubic phase transition temperature toward room temperature, which thus contributes to the enhanced density-of-states effective mass. Combined with the reduced carrier concentration via the suppressed Ge vacancies by high-entropy effect and Sb donor doping, a large Seebeck coefficient is attained. Meanwhile, the severe lattice distortions and micron-sized Zn0.6Cd0.4Te precipitations restrain the lattice thermal conductivity approaching to the theoretical minimum value. Finally, the maximum zT of Ge0.82Sb0.08Te0.90(MnZnCdTe3)0.10 reaches 1.24 at 723 K via the trade-off between the degraded carrier mobility and the improved Seebeck coefficient, as well as the depressed lattice thermal conductivity. These results provide a reference for the implementation of entropy engineering in GeTe and other thermoelectric materials.

RESUMO

Background: Our study aims to validate a commercially available inertial measurement unit (IMU) system against a standard laboratory-based optical motion capture (OMC) system for shoulder measurements in a clinical context. Methods: The validation analyses were conducted on 19 healthy male volunteers. Twelve reflective markers were placed on each participant's trunk, scapula and across the arm and one IMU was attached via a self-adhesive strap on the forearm. A single tester simultaneously collected shoulder kinematic data for four shoulder movements: flexion, extension, external rotation, and abduction. Agreement between OMC system and IMU measurements was assessed with Bland-Altman analyses. Secondary analysis included mean biases, root mean square error (RMSE) analysis and Welch's t-test. Results: Bland-Altman limits of agreement (LoA) exceeded the acceptable range of mean difference for 95% of the population (-22.27°, 11.31°). The mean bias showed high levels of agreement within 8° for all four movements. More than 60% of participants demonstrated mean bias less than 10° between methods. Statistically significant differences were found between measurements for abduction (P<0.001) and flexion (P=0.027) but not for extension and external rotation (P≥0.05). Conclusions: Our study shows preliminary evidence for acceptable accuracy of a commercially available IMU against an OMC system for assessment of shoulder movements by a single tester. The IMU also exhibits similar whole degree of error compared to a standard goniometer with potential for application in remote rehabilitation.

RESUMO

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness due to increased intraocular pressure (IOP) in the eye. We have developed a novel treatment option for glaucoma based on a real-time IOP-dependent nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and packed in a therapeutic contact lens to reduce the IOP. First, 1.6 nmole nitric oxide was produced from the genetic chassis, which was optimized for isopropyl ß-d-1-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG) induction in a T7 expression system. For biosafety concerns to human being, the csgAD genes responsible for curli biofilm formation in Escherichia coli were co-expressed with NOS in the designated NOSAD strain to strengthen the adherence of cells to the contact lens, thereby preventing the contamination into the eyes. Moreover, NOSAD is a diaminopimelic acid (DAP) auxotrophic strain, which cannot survive without supplementation of DAP and reached the critical consideration of biosafety to the environment. We also demonstrated that the nitric oxide diffusion was 3.6-times enhanced from penetration into the aqueous humor of porcine eyes. The deformation ratio of the contact lens was correlated to the change of IOP by using a digital image correlation (DIC) system in a porcine eye model. The novel systematic approach provides an alternative treatment for glaucoma patients in the future.

RESUMO

Background Mid-pole patellar fractures are typically fixed with metal implants in the conventional "11-8" tension band construct. However, this technique is fraught with numerous implant-related complications. The aim of this study is to evaluate the union rate following "all-suture" fixation of mid-pole patellar fractures. Methods We retrospectively evaluated a consecutive case series of patients with displaced mid-pole patella fractures treated with "all-suture" fixation in our institution. Fifteen cases were available for this study. The average age was 61.5 years. Clinical and radiological outcomes were evaluated. Union time, complications, and revision rate were recorded. The minimum follow-up was one year. Results There were eight males and seven females, with a mean age of 61.5 ± 13.3 years. Fourteen out of 15 cases (93.3%) achieved radiographic union at 12 weeks postoperatively. The average time to radiographic union was 8.0 ± 2.7 weeks. Five cases (33.3%) had an increase in the fracture gap (>2 mm) at around four to six weeks postoperatively. Four of these cases had an eventual union, whereas one patient had fibrous non-union. There was one case of superficial surgical site infection and one case of infected hematoma. None of the patients required revision surgery. Conclusion "All-suture" fixation of mid-pole transverse patellar fractures is a safe and viable alternative to the conventional "11-8" tension band constructs with metal implants, with good union time, rates, and added benefits of not requiring additional surgery for implant removal.

RESUMO

The research on supercapacitors (SCs) is one of the hot topics in the field of energy storage, and the intrinsic ageing mechanism of SCs is significant from both the economic and the scientific point of view. In this paper, the negative effects of decay of the key structural components on ageing of SCs were investigated by factorial design and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The ANOVA results showed that the degree of the negative influence on ageing of SCs could be ranked in descending order as anode > separator > cathode. The ageing would be accelerated due to the interaction between the electrode and separator, especially at a high charge-discharge current density. Further, the intrinsic chemical ageing mechanism of SCs was revealed by the morphology, microstructure, and chemical composition analyses of the fresh and aged key components (the electrode carbon materials, current collectors, and separators) with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), etc. Moreover, the minimum pore width of electrode carbon materials suitable for electrolyte ion diffusion was obtained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which corroborated the assumption that the pore structure deterioration was one of the direct causes of capacitance loss for aged SCs. Generally, the ageing mechanism of key components of SCs could be a reference to develop advanced electrode materials and separators for SCs.

RESUMO

Besides aluminum alloys, lightweight carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) have been adopted progressively in automobiles to save energy and reduce emission, so constructing a reliable heterojunction between aluminum alloys and CFRPs has come to be the key issue. In this study, ultrafast picosecond infrared (IR) and excimer ultraviolet (UV) lasers were introduced to pretreat the joint surface to enhance the adhesive strength. Scanning electron microscopy, white light interferometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy examinations indicated that because the energy absorptivities for the two lasers were different, the variation of the roughness, wettability, and chemical composition were a little different for the patterned surface. Correspondingly, the shear strengths of the adhesive joints were increased from 5.6 to 24.8 and 21.9 MPa for IR and UV laser-pretreated samples, respectively. Furthermore, finite element analysis was adopted to evaluate the effects of strengthened mechanical interlocking and fortified chemical bonding force on the enhancement of joint strength. It was shown that chemical bonding, instead of mechanical interlocking, played the dominant role in reinforcing the heterogeneous joints. As a whole, the picosecond IR laser was more preferable for surface pretreatment in adhesive heterojunctions due to its higher processing and enhancing efficiency.
