OBJECTIVE: Long-term protective effects of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) at fractures with different doses and components are controversial. We analyzed the effect of MHT on the incidence of spine and femur fractures according to MHT type, age at commencement, duration and dose of hormones in Korean women. METHOD: This retrospective study evaluated propensity score-matched patients with MHT from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Among women aged ≥50 years with menopause between 2004 and 2007, spine and femur fracture incidence until 2017 was analyzed in 36,446 women who had received MHT for >1 year. Estrogen-progesterone therapy (EPT), estrogen-only therapy (ET) or tibolone therapy was conducted. RESULTS: EPT significantly lowered the incidence of spine and femur fractures with a conventional dose, but not with a low dose. Tibolone significantly decreased the incidence of spine fractures in women aged 50-59 years when used for >5 years, and the incidence of femur fractures in women older than 60 years when used for >3 years. ET significantly lowered the risk of femur fractures when estradiol was used for >5 years. CONCLUSION: In menopausal women, all MHT including conventional-dose EPT, ET and tibolone tended to lower the incidence of fractures. The effects, however, varied with the type of fracture and type of MHT.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) use, type, duration and age of commencement with myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke in postmenopausal Korean women. METHODS: This nested case-control study used data from the National Health Insurance Service database to analyze 2017 data from women aged ≥50 years and diagnosed with natural menopause between 2004 and 2007. Among 356,160 eligible women, 36,446 used HRT for ≥1 year and 319,714 did not (controls). These two groups were matched 1:1 for statistical analysis. Type and duration were categorized into three categories. RESULTS: Women who started estrogen-progestogen therapy (EPT) or estrogen therapy (ET) in their 50s, or EPT or tibolone in their ≥60s exhibited a lower stroke risk than controls. MI risk was lower among women who used tibolone - regardless of duration - or EPT or ET for 1-3 years than among controls. Stroke risk was lower with tibolone use for ≥5 years or with EPT or ET use for 1-3 years or ≥5 years than non-users. CONCLUSION: Our study may support the beneficial effect of HRT by showing that Korean postmenopausal women who used HRT at a relatively younger and healthier age had a relative benefit for MI and stroke.

OBJECTIVE: Catheter-directed ethanol sclerotherapy (CDS) is known to less affect the ovarian function, with comparable efficacy. This study aims to investigate the change in ovarian reserve after catheter-directed ethanol sclerotherapy in patients with recurrent endometrioma, as compared to primary endometrioma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective, observational study. Electronic medical records and images of patients with endometrioma who underwent CDS from August 2014 to April 2022 at a single institution were obtained. Patients aged > 18 years old and with anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) level between 0.8 and 10.0 with regular menstruation were enrolled. Cyst diameter, laterality, AMH level, and CA-125 level before and after 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, and 3 years of sclerotherapy were obtained. RESULTS: A total of 180 patients were fit for analysis. There was no statistical difference in age and cyst size between the two groups. Mean values of AMH in each group were 3.35 in the primary group and 3.00 in the recurrent group prior to the procedure (p = 0.347). There was no significant difference in delta value of AMH after sclerotherapy in both groups at each follow-up period. Also, this result was consistent when stratified by laterality, preprocedural AMH level, and initial size of endometrioma. No case of recurrence was reported in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: The effect of CDS on ovarian reserve is not inferior in recurrent endometrioma compared to primary endometrioma. Since sclerotherapy is known to less deteriorate the ovarian function than surgical removal of endometrioma, clinician could consider this as the first-line therapy in patients with recurrent endometrioma. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Catheter-directed ethanol sclerotherapy for patients with recurrent endometrioma has similar effect on ovarian reserve compared to patients with primary endometrioma. KEY POINTS: • Secondary surgery for endometrioma has significant deleterious effect on ovarian function. • Catheter-directed sclerotherapy (CDS) for endometrioma had equally minimal adverse effect on ovarian reserve, represented as anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), in both primary and recurrent groups. • Physicians should consider CDS for patients with recurrent endometrioma who desire to preserve ovarian function.

The pathological hallmark of synucleinopathies, including Lewy body dementia and Parkinson's disease (PD), is the presence of Lewy bodies, which are primarily composed of intracellular inclusions of misfolded α-synuclein (α-syn) among other proteins. α-Syn is found in extracellular biological fluids in PD patients and has been implicated in modulating immune responses in the central nervous system (CNS) and the periphery. Natural killer (NK) cells are innate effector lymphocytes that are present in the CNS in homeostatic and pathological conditions. NK cell numbers are increased in the blood of PD patients and their activity is associated with disease severity; however, the role of NK cells in the context of α-synucleinopathies has never been explored. Here, we show that human NK cells can efficiently internalize and degrade α-syn aggregates via the endosomal/lysosomal pathway. We demonstrate that α-syn aggregates attenuate NK cell cytotoxicity in a dose-dependent manner and decrease the release of the proinflammatory cytokine, IFN-γ. To address the role of NK cells in PD pathogenesis, NK cell function was investigated in a preformed fibril α-syn-induced mouse PD model. Our studies demonstrate that in vivo depletion of NK cells in a preclinical mouse PD model resulted in exacerbated motor deficits and increased phosphorylated α-syn deposits. Collectively, our data provide a role of NK cells in modulating synuclein pathology and motor symptoms in a preclinical mouse model of PD, which could be developed into a therapeutic for PD and other synucleinopathies.

PURPOSE: This study aim was to evaluate efficacy of the combination with cosmetic and psychosocial education program on body image, sexual function, and emotional function among young-onset breast cancer (YBC). METHODS: An unblended, randomized, controlled trial design was conducted in patients newly diagnosed with stage I-III breast cancer from 2014 to 2015. The intervention group received a structured education program including appearance management and mind control for 4 weeks. The outcome of this study shows effect on body image and sexual functioning and a distress due to altered appearance and anxiety after the intervention and 6 months after intervention. RESULTS: Among 228 eligible patients, 109 (47.8%) agreed to participate in the present study and were randomized to intervention (n = 54) or control (n = 55) groups. After intervention, the intervention group reported significantly better body image compared to the control group (mean score of 75.0 vs. 59.3, respectively; P < 0.01). The intervention group also reported significantly lower levels of distress due to altered appearance and higher levels of sexual functioning compared to the control group after the intervention. The effects were maintained even 6 months after intervention. CONCLUSION(S): Body image intervention for YBC had effect on improving body image and sexual functioning and a reduction in distress due to altered appearance and anxiety. STUDY OBJECTIVE: To investigate the therapeutic efficacy of catheter-directed ethanol sclerotherapy (CDS) and its effect on ovarian reserve in patients with endometrioma at risk of decreased ovarian reserve. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Teaching hospital. PATIENTS: We evaluated 18 patients with ovarian endometrioma measuring ≥3 cm and preprocedural serum antimüllerian hormone (AMH) levels of <2 ng/mL. INTERVENTIONS: An 8.5-F catheter was inserted either transabdominally or transvaginally into the endometrioma. After aspiration, sclerotherapy with 99% ethanol was performed, with a subsequent 20-minute ethanol retention. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Ultrasonography was performed preprocedurally and 6 months after CDS to evaluate any recurrence or changes in cyst size. Furthermore, serum AMH levels, cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) levels, and the visual analog scale scores for dysmenorrhea were obtained to analyze the ovarian reserve and treatment efficacy, preprocedurally and at 6 months after CDS. The mean cyst size on ultrasonography and serum CA-125 levels decreased 6 months after CDS (p <.001 and p = .001, respectively). All patients reported a decreased visual analog scale score for dysmenorrhea (p <.001). However, the difference in serum AMH levels before and after CDS was statistically insignificant (p = .875). CONCLUSION: CDS was efficacious in reducing pain and serum CA-125 levels in patients with low AMH levels without adversely affecting their ovarian reserve.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacies of catheter-directed sclerotherapy (CDS) with 99% ethanol and surgery for ovarian endometrioma and their impact on the ovarian reserve. METHODS: From January 2011 to June 2019, 71 patients who underwent surgical excision (n = 51) or CDS (n = 20) for symptomatic ovarian endometriomas were reviewed. To analyze the effect on the ovarian reserve, serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels were compared before and after the procedure. Symptoms, serum cancer antigen 125 (CA-125), lesion size, recurrence, hospitalization, and complications were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up of 22.3 months (range, 6 to 94 months), no significant difference in symptom relief was found between CDS and surgery (95.0% [19/20] and 92.2% [47/51], respectively, p > 0.999). The hospital stay was shorter with CDS than with surgery (2.6 ± 0.6 days and 4.1 ± 0.5 days, respectively, p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in serum AMH levels before and after CDS (2.3 (interquartile range (IQR) 1.1-5.3) ng/mL and 2.6 (IQR 0.9-4.9) ng/mL, respectively, p = 0.243), but there was a significant decrease in serum AMH in the surgery group (3.0 (IQR 1.3-5.5) ng/mL and 1.6 (IQR 0.7-3.2) ng/mL, respectively, p < 0.001). CA-125 decreased in both CDS and surgery groups (p = 0.001 and < 0.001, respectively). Two minor complications occurred in the surgery group, while no complication was observed in the CDS group. CONCLUSIONS: The therapeutic efficacy of CDS appears to be comparable to that of surgical resection for ovarian endometrioma. Ovarian function was well-preserved, and a shorter hospital stay was required in patients who underwent CDS. KEY POINTS: • There was no significant difference in symptom relief between CDS and surgery (95.0% [19/20], 92.2% [47/51], respectively, p >0.999). • No significant difference in serum AMH levels was seen before and after CDS (2.3 (1.1, 5.3)* ng/mL, 2.6 (0.9, 4.9)* ng/mL, respectively, p = 0.243), whereas serum AMH levels significantly decreased after surgical resection (3.0 (1.3, 5.5)* ng/mL, 1.6 (0.7, 3.2)* ng/mL, respectively, p <0.001). *Median (25 quartiles, 75 quartiles) • The hospitalization period was shorter with CDS than with surgery (2.6 ± 0.6 days, 4.1 ± 0.5 days, respectively, p <0.001).

BACKGROUND: Physiological homeostasis decline, immunosenescence, and increased risk for multiple diseases, including neurodegeneration, are all hallmarks of ageing. Importantly, it is known that the ageing process is sex-biased. For example, there are sex differences in predisposition for multiple age-related diseases, including neurodegenerative and autoimmune diseases. However, sex differences in age-associated immune phenotypes are not clearly understood. RESULTS: Here, we examined the effects of age on immune cell phenotypes in both sexes of C57BL/6J mice with a particular focus on NK cells. We found female-specific spleen weight increases with age and concordant reduction in the number of splenocytes per gram of spleen weight compared to young females. To evaluate sex- and age-associated changes in splenic immune cell composition, we performed flow cytometry analysis. In male mice, we observed an age-associated reduction in the frequencies of monocytes and NK cells; female mice displayed a reduction in B cells, NK cells, and CD8 + T cells and increased frequency of monocytes and neutrophils with age. We then performed a whole blood stimulation assay and multiplex analyses of plasma cytokines and observed age- and sex-specific differences in immune cell reactivity and basal circulating cytokine concentrations. As we have previously illustrated a potential role of NK cells in Parkinson's disease, an age-related neurodegenerative disease, we further analyzed age-associated changes in NK cell phenotypes and function. There were distinct differences between the sexes in age-associated changes in the expression of NK cell receptors, IFN-γ production, and impairment of α-synuclein endocytosis. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates sex- and age-specific alterations in splenic lymphocyte composition, circulating cytokine/chemokine profiles, and NK cell phenotype and effector functions. Our data provide evidence that age-related physiological perturbations differ between the sexes which may help elucidate sex differences in age-related diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Parkinson's disease, where immune dysfunction is implicated in their etiology.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by the accumulation of alpha-synuclein (α-syn) inclusions, the major component of Lewy bodies. Extracellular α-syn aggregates act as a damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) and the presence of autoantibodies against α-syn species in the cerebrospinal fluid and the serum of PD patients implicate the involvement of innate and adaptive immune responses. In non-transgenic (Tg) mice, intrastriatal injection of preformed fibril (PFF) α-syn results in widespread pathologic α-syn inclusions in the CNS. While the PFF model has been broadly utilized to study the mechanistic relationship between α-syn transmission and other neuropathological phenotypes, the immune phenotypes in this model are not clearly demonstrated. This study aimed to characterize the immune phenotypes during pathologic α-syn propagation by utilizing PFF α-syn-injected non-tg mice. Here, we showed that pathologic α-syn inclusions are prevalent in various brain regions and the gut at 5 months post injection (p.i.), preceding the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra (SN). We discovered a distinct inflammatory response involving both activation of microglia and astrocytes and infiltration of B, CD4+ T, CD8+ T, and natural killer cells in the brain at 5 months p.i. Moreover, PFF α-syn-injected mice display significant alterations in the frequency and number of leukocyte subsets in the spleen and lymph nodes with minimum alterations in the blood. Our data provide primary evidence that intracerebral-initiated synucleinopathies in non-tg mice alter immune cell profiles both in the CNS and peripheral lymphoid organs. Furthermore, our data provides support for utilizing this mouse model to assess the mechanistic connection between immune responses and synuclein pathology.

Emerging mosquito-transmitted RNA viruses, such as Zika virus (ZIKV) and Chikungunya represent human pathogens of an immense global health problem. In particular, ZIKV has emerged explosively since 2007 to cause a series of epidemics in the South Pacific and most recently in the Americas. Although typical ZIKV infections are asymptomatic, ZIKV infection during pregnancy is increasingly associated with microcephaly and other fetal developmental abnormalities. In the last few years, genomic and molecular investigations have established a remarkable progress on the pathogenic mechanisms of ZIKV infection using in vitro and in vivo models. Here, we highlight recent advances in ZIKV-host cell interaction studies, including cellular targets of ZIKV, ZIKV-mediated cell death mechanisms, host cell restriction factors that limit ZIKV replication, and immune evasion mechanisms utilized by ZIKV. Understanding of the mechanisms of ZIKV⁻host interaction at the cellular level will contribute crucial insights into the development of ZIKV therapeutics and vaccines.

To analyze the clinical and endoscopic features of colonic anisakiasis. A retrospective chart review of 20 patients with colonic anisakiasis, who were diagnosed by colonoscopy at 8 hospitals between January 2002 and December 2011, was performed. Patients' mean age was 53.6±10.74 years. Seventy percent patients were men. Acute abdominal pain was a common symptom that mostly developed within 48 hr after the ingestion of raw fish, and which lasted for 1-28 days. Sixty percent patients had ingested raw fish before the diagnosis of colonic anisakiasis and 40% patients were incidentally found to have colonic anisakiasis during the screening colonoscopies. Leukocytosis and eosinophilia were each found in 20% of the patients. In all patients who underwent colonoscopy, the worms were removed with biopsy forceps, except in 1 case, and a definite diagnosis of anisakiasis was made. In some cases of colonic anisakiasis, colonoscopy may be helpful in the diagnosis and treatment to avoid surgical intervention.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although sarcopenia is associated with an increased risk for mortality after the curative resection of colorectal cancer, its influence on the development of advanced colonic neoplasia remains unclear. METHODS: This study included 1270 subjects aged 40 years or older evaluated with first-time screening colonoscopy at Seoul National University Boramae Health Care Center from January 2010 to February 2015. Skeletal muscle mass was measured with a body composition analyzer (direct segmental multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis method). Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to determine whether sarcopenia is associated with advanced colorectal neoplasia. RESULTS: Of 1270 subjects, 139 (10.9%) were categorized into the sarcopenia group and 1131 (89.1%) into the non-sarcopenia group. In the non-sarcopenia group, 55 subjects (4.9%) had advanced colorectal neoplasia. However, in the sarcopenia group, 19 subjects (13.7%) had advanced colorectal neoplasia, including 1 subject with invasive colorectal cancer (0.7%). In addition, subjects with sarcopenia had a higher prevalence of advanced adenoma (P < 0.001) than those without sarcopenia. According to the multiple logistic regression analysis adjusted for variable confounders, age (odds ratio 1.062, 95% confidence interval 1.032-1.093; P < 0.001), male sex (odds ratio 1.749, 95% confidence interval 1.008-3.036; P = 0.047), and sarcopenia (odds ratio 2.347, 95% confidence interval 1.311-4.202; P = 0.004) were associated with an advanced colorectal neoplasia. CONCLUSION: Sarcopenia is associated with an increased risk of advanced colorectal neoplasia.

Applying discrete-time hazard models to person-year data constructed from 1% microdata sample of 2010 Korean Census, we explore how men's education affects their transition to first marriage, and how the relationship between education and marriage has changed across three 10-year birth cohorts of Korean men born from 1946 to 1975. Drawing on Oppenheimer's theory of marriage and review of changing educational and economic contexts of Korean men, we develop a hypothesis on growing educational differentials in marriage. We find that the high educated delay marriage until later ages but catch up to the extent to which they are eventually more likely to marry than the low educated. There is a continued trend across cohorts toward the delay and avoidance of marriage at all educational levels. However, the trend of retreat from marriage has been more substantial for men with high school or less education compared to men with a university degree, leading to growing educational gaps over time in marriage. Among the three cohorts, the youngest cohort, among which low educated men's economic prospects have particularly deteriorated due to rapid educational expansion and economic crisis, shows most pronounced decline in marriage.

BACKGROUND: Regulator of G-protein signaling (RGS) family proteins, which are GTPase accelerating proteins (GAPs) that negatively regulate G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), are known to be important modulators of immune cell activation and function. Various single-nucleotide polymorphisms in RGS proteins highly correlate with increased risk for multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune, neurodegenerative disorder. An in-depth search of the gene expression omnibus profile database revealed higher levels of RGS10 and RGS1 transcripts in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in MS patients, suggesting potential functional roles for RGS proteins in MS etiology and/or progression. METHODS: To define potential roles for RGS10 in regulating autoimmune responses, we evaluated RGS10-null and wild-type (WT) mice for susceptibility to experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a widely studied model of MS. Leukocyte distribution and functional responses were assessed using biochemical, immunohistological, and flow cytometry approaches. RESULTS: RGS10-null mice displayed significantly milder clinical symptoms of EAE with reduced disease incidence and severity, as well as delayed onset. We observed fewer CD3+ T lymphocytes and CD11b+ myeloid cells in the central nervous system (CNS) tissues of RGS10-null mice with myelin oligodendrocyte protein (MOG)35-55-induced EAE. Lymph node cells and splenocytes of immunized RGS10-null mice demonstrated decreased proliferative and cytokine responses in response to in vitro MOG memory recall challenge. In adoptive recipients, transferred myelin-reactive RGS10-null Th1 cells (but not Th17 cells) induced EAE that was less severe than their WT counterparts. CONCLUSIONS: These data demonstrate a critical role for RGS10 in mediating autoimmune disease through regulation of T lymphocyte function. This is the first study ever conducted to elucidate the function of RGS10 in effector lymphocytes in the context of EAE. The identification of RGS10 as an important regulator of inflammation might open possibilities for the development of more specific therapies for MS.

BACKGROUND: Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is one of the few approved treatments for stroke, but its effects on the phenotype of microglia/macrophages are poorly understood. One of its side effects is an increase in the inflammatory response leading to neuronal cell damage and death in the ischemic cascade after stroke. Injury-induced activated microglia/macrophages can have dual functions as pro-inflammatory (M1) and anti-inflammatory (M2) factors in brain injury and repair. Recent studies show that progesterone (PROG) is a potent anti-inflammatory agent which affects microglia/macrophage expression after brain injury. PURPOSE: We examined the interaction of tPA-induced expression of microglia/macrophage phenotypes and PROG's anti-inflammatory effects. RESULTS: tPA treatment increased the recruitment of microglia/macrophages, the polarity of M1 reactions, the expression of MIP-1α in neurons and capillaries, and the expression of MMP-3 compared to vehicle, and PROG modulated these effects. CONCLUSIONS: PROG treatment attenuates tPA-induced inflammatory alterations in brain capillaries and microglia/macrophages both in vivo and in vitro and thus may be a useful adjunct therapy when tPA is given for stroke.

Microglia play a critical role in maintaining brain homeostasis but become dysregulated in neurodegenerative diseases. Regulator of G-protein Signaling 10 (RGS10), one of the most abundant homeostasis proteins in microglia, decreases with aging and functions as a negative regulator of microglia activation. RGS10-deficient mice exhibit impaired glucose tolerance, and high-fat diet induces insulin resistance in these mice. In this study, we investigated whether RGS10 modulates microglia activation in response to hyperglycemic conditions, complementing our previous findings of its role in inflammatory stimuli. In RGS10 knockdown (KD) BV2 cells, TNF production increased significantly in response to high glucose, particularly under proinflammatory conditions. Additionally, glucose uptake and GLUT1 mRNA levels were significantly elevated in RGS10 KD BV2 cells. These cells produced higher ROS and displayed reduced sensitivity to the antioxidant N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) when exposed to high glucose. Notably, both BV2 cells and primary microglia that lack RGS10 exhibited impaired uptake of alpha-synuclein aggregates. These findings suggest that RGS10 acts as a negative regulator of microglia activation not only in response to inflammation but also under hyperglycemic conditions.

We aimed to evaluate the association between daily dietary calcium intake and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in postmenopausal women using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). This cross-sectional study included 12,348 women aged 45-70 years who had reached natural menopause. They were classified into three groups according to daily dietary calcium intake: <400 mg, 400-800 mg, and >800 mg. The risks of CVD, stroke, angina, and myocardial infarction were assessed in each group. Further, we performed subgroup analysis according to the post-menopause duration (≤10 vs. >10 postmenopausal years). We performed logistic regression analysis with adjustment for age, menopausal age, income, urban area, education, insulin use, body mass index, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, high alcohol intake, smoking, exercise, oral contraceptive use, and hormonal therapy use. Calcium intake level was not significantly associated with the risk of CVD in the total population and the ≤10 postmenopausal years subgroup. However, in the >10 postmenopausal years subgroup, daily calcium intake >800 mg was associated with significantly decreased risks of all CVD (odds ratio [OR], 0.27; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.11-0.64), stroke (OR, 0.06; 95% CI, 0.01-0.42), and myocardial infarction (OR, 0.27; 95% CI, 0.11-0.64). Our findings suggest that a dietary calcium intake of >800 mg/day decreases the risk of CVD events in women who have been menopausal for >10 years.

OBJECTIVES: After the 2002 Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study, the global use of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) declined, and despite subsequent studies indicating a low risk of breast cancer, concerns about MHT usage persist. We examined the relationship between changes in MHT use and changes in the incidence of breast cancer from 2002 to 2020 in South Korea. STUDY DESIGN: This study used tumor registry information from 2002 to 2020 from the Korean Statistical Information Service and analyzed the incidence rate of invasive breast cancer in women, who were divided into two age groups: <50 and >50 years. The numbers of MHT prescriptions in Korea between 2002 and 2020 was determined from pharmacy data. RESULTS: The incidence of breast cancer per 100,000 women in South Korea increased from 34.3 in 2002 to 96.4 in 2020. Breast cancer incidence rates increased annually in both groups of women (those aged under and over 50 years), with no significant difference between the two (p = 0.614). Prescriptions for estrogen therapy (ET) in 2020 were 52.7 % lower than those in 2002. Prescriptions for estrogen-progesterone therapy (EPT) decreased by 27.9 % over the same period. Conversely, tibolone prescriptions, which had initially decreased by 25.4 % in 2004, subsequently showed a steady increase and were 93.6 % higher in 2020 than in 2002. CONCLUSION: The incidence of breast cancer increased annually in Korean women of all ages; however, the use of ET and EPT for MHT has declined since 2002, particularly the use of EPT after 2010. MHT, especially EPT, did not significantly increase the incidence of breast cancer in Korean women.

Mounting data suggest an important role for the immune system in Parkinson's disease (PD). Previous evidence of increased natural killer (NK) cell populations in PD suggests a potential role of NK cells in the pathogenesis of the disease. Previous studies have analyzed NK cell populations using aggregation by variable expression of CD56 and CD16. It remains unknown what differences may exist between NK cell subpopulations when stratified using more nuanced classification. Here, we profile NK cell subpopulations and elucidate the expressions of activating, NKG2D, inhibitory, NKG2A, and homing, CX3CR1, receptors on NK cell subpopulations in PD and healthy controls (HC). We analyzed cryopreserved PMBC samples using a 10-color flow cytometry panel to evaluate NK cell subpopulations in 31 individuals with sporadic PD and 27 HC participants. Here we identified significant differences in the CD56dim NK subset that changes with disease severity in PD. Furthermore, the expressions of NKG2D in all three NK cell subsets were significantly elevated in PD patients compared to HC. Notably, NKG2A expression in the CD56bright NK subset increased in PD patients with longer disease duration but there were no changes in CX3CR1. In summary, our data suggests that changes in NK cells may be influenced by the clinical severity and duration of PD.

Purpose: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has been an important method of treatment in the advance of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The indications for HSCT are evolving and require updated establishment. In this study, we aimed to investigate the efficacy of HSCT on the treatment outcome of pediatric ALL, considering the indications for HSCT and subgroups. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on ALL patients diagnosed and treated at a single center. Risk groups were categorized based on age at diagnosis, initial white blood cell count, disease lineage (B/T), and cytogenetic study results. Data on the patients' disease status at HSCT and indications of HSCT were collected. Indications for HSCT were categorized as upfront HSCT at 1st complete remission, relapse, and refractory disease. Results: Among the 549 screened patients, a total of 418 patients were included in the study; B-ALL (n=379) and T-ALL (n=39). HSCT was conducted on a total of 106 patients (25.4%), with a higher frequency as upfront HSCT in higher risk groups and specific cytogenetics. The overall survival (OS) was significantly better when done upfront than in relapsed or refractory state in T-ALL patients (p=0.0016). The KMT2A-rearranged ALL patients showed superior event-free survival (p=0.0023) and OS (p=0.0221) when HSCT was done as upfront treatment. Conclusion: HSCT had a substantial positive effect in a specific subset of pediatric ALL. In particular, frontline HSCT for T-ALL and KMT2A-rearranged ALL offered a better prognosis than when HSCT was conducted in a relapsed or refractory setting.
