OBJECTIVE: Podcasts have recently been introduced into psychiatry education, despite limited evidence evaluating podcasting in medical education. PsychEd is an educational, publicly available podcast targeting junior learners in psychiatry. This study characterized PsychEd's listeners and the podcast's role in their education. METHODS: The study involved a mixed-methods survey, followed by semi-structured phone interviews with respondents. There were 97 survey responders in total, of whom 9 participated in a telephone interview. Survey responses were coded as interval data and analyzed descriptively using statistical software. Interviews were transcribed and coded for emergent themes using a grounded theory model. RESULTS: PsychEd listeners represented an interprofessional audience, with 46 respondents (48%) being physicians or physicians in training, and 34 (35%) being allied mental health professionals. All respondents (100%) rated the podcast as "helpful" or "very helpful" for general knowledge. Listeners were attracted to PsychEd for the auditory learning format, the opportunity to review existing knowledge, the focus on core topics, the Canadian expertise, and the presentation of "clinical pearls." Respondents highlighted valuable qualities of a psychiatry podcast: conversational, case-based, narrative approach, longer episodes (i.e., 30-60 minutes) as compared to other medical specialties, and a clinical focus. Furthermore, they identified podcasts as an opportunity for shared interprofessional curricula. CONCLUSION: This study is the first to examine the motivations and experiences of listeners of a psychiatry educational podcast. The findings support existing literature on the benefits of podcasts in medical education. Future studies should explore the impact of podcasts on learning and behaviors.

AIM: Medical residency training is associated with a range of sociodemographic, lifestyle and mental health factors that may confer higher risk for psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) in residents, yet little research has examined this question. Thus, we aimed to document the prevalence and associated factors of PLEs among resident physicians. METHODS: Physicians enrolled in residency programmes in the Province of Québec, Canada (four universities) were recruited in Fall 2022 via their programme coordinators and social media. They completed an online questionnaire assessing PLEs in the past 3 months (the 15-item Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences), as well as sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle and mental health. Analyses included survey weights and gamma regressions. RESULTS: The sample included 502 residents (mean age, 27.6 years; 65.9% women). Only 1.3% (95% CI: 0.5%, 4.0%) of residents met the screening cut-off for psychotic disorder. Factors associated with higher scores for PLEs included racialised minority status (relative difference: +7.5%; 95% CI: +2.2%, +13.2%) and English versus French as preferred language (relative difference: +7.9% 95% CI: +3.1%, +12.9%), as well as each additional point on scales of depression (relative difference: +0.8%; 95% CI: +0.3%, +1.3%) and anxiety (relative difference: +1.3%; 95% CI: +0.8%, +1.7%). In secondary analyses, racialised minority status was associated with persecutory items, but not with other PLEs. Gender, residency programmes and lifestyle variables were not associated with PLEs. CONCLUSIONS: This study found low reports of PLEs in a sample of resident physicians. Associations of PLEs with minoritised status may reflect experiences of discrimination.

PURPOSE: There has been scant scholarly attention paid to characterizing how the numerous definitions of terms associated with compassion and humanism have been mobilized or what the organizational implications of pursuing different constructs might be. This study explored the uses and implications of the terminology associated with humanistic medicine in the work of the Associated Medical Services (AMS) Phoenix Project. METHOD: This study involved two phases (2014-2015). First, two pilot group workshops with AMS Phoenix Project participants and stakeholders were conducted to explore ways of parsing and interpreting core concepts used in the project. The authors then assembled an archive of texts associated with the project, comprising the project website and blog posts, conference proceedings, and fellowship and grant applications. Informed by critical discourse analysis, the authors identified, described, and analyzed core terms related to the project's mission and explored the type of health care practices and reforms implied by their use. RESULTS: Two recurring core terms, care/caring and compassion, and eight clusters of terms related to these core terms were identified in the archive. Caring and compassion as terms were articulated in various psychological, sociological, and political configurations. This polysemy reflected a diverse array of health care reform agendas. CONCLUSIONS: Understanding how different interpretations of caring and compassion cluster around core topics and concerns of humanistic medicine offers scholars an entry point for comparing and appraising the quality and direction of reform agendas, including multilevel strategies that involve systems-level changes.
