RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Stress is a part of daily life for graduate students, including graduate nursing students. Contemporary graduate nursing students are facing unprecedented challenges to meet rigorous academic standards as they prepare for their advanced professional role to meet the demands of the nation's complex and ever-changing healthcare system. Empowering graduate nursing students to ease their perceived stress and minimize undesirable health effects may benefit their capacity to adapt and successfully manage perceived stress in their future healthcare role. AIMS: To conduct a systematic review to evaluate the existing evidence with the aim of identifying evidence-based self-care interventions for coping with perceived stress. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review, searching CINAHL Plus with Full Text, PsycINFO, and MEDLINE. Inclusion criteria included self-care, graduate students, perceived stress as measured by Perceived Stress Scale, quantitative analysis, conducted within the United States, English language, and peer reviewed. Two authors completed an asynchronous review of the articles, and one expert evidence-based practice mentor and one wellness expert conducted rigorous appraisal of the eight identified studies. Evidence was evaluated and synthesized, and recommendations for practice were determined. RESULTS: Eight studies meeting the criteria for this systematic review were critically appraised. The interventions varied from a stress management course to mind-body-stress-reduction (MBSR) techniques, such as yoga, breath work, meditation, and mindfulness. All studies measured the outcome of stress with the Perceived Stress Scale. Each study demonstrated a reduction in perceived stress postintervention. LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION: Most effective self-care MBSR interventions include (a) a didactic component, (b) a guided MBSR practice session, and (c) homework. Consideration should be given to a trained or certified MBSR instructor to teach the intervention.

RESUMO

Examinations are used to evaluate individual student learning. Therefore, fair and consistent administration practices are essential. One issue associated with testing administration practices includes whether or not students should be allowed to ask questions during exams and how faculty should respond. Findings from this descriptive study indicate that faculty believe answering questions disrupts the testing environment, inhibits effective monitoring of the testing environment, and could provide unfair hints to students who ask questions. Yet, faculty permit students to ask questions to clarify unclear wording, to provide definitions, and to appear receptive to student needs. Recommendations for nursing education and research are provided.

RESUMO

Staff nurse preceptors contribute importantly to student learning and to academic program outcomes; however, academic-clinical partnerships can offer focused learning opportunities for preceptors as well. This study addressed different interest levels in evidence-based practice across clinical settings by testing the effectiveness of a workshop designed to increase preceptor knowledge and endorsement of evidence-based practice. Nurse preceptor participants (N = 160) recruited from seven hospitals during 2009 to 2011 had an average age of 43.9 (SD = 11.5) and an average of 17.0 (SD = 11.2) years of nursing experience. Participants' scores on the Evidence-Based Practice Beliefs Scale improved significantly from pretest to posttest (M(pre) = 59.0, SD(pre) = 8.4, M(post) = 66.4, SD(post) = 6.8, p < .001), which was confirmed by subgroup analyses. At follow-up (1 to 25 months), 52% of the nurse preceptors reported increased use of evidence-based practice. This study indicates that a short collaborative, content-focused workshop can promote preceptor endorsement of evidence-based practice.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based practice (EBP) is key to improve outcomes and requires health care professionals to appraise research findings. Interpreting statistical findings can be daunting for nursing students. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate student perception and satisfaction with a TED Talk assignment as an approach to understand concepts used to appraise evidence. METHODS: A descriptive design was used to survey students about their experience creating and delivering a TED Talk to their peers in an EBP course. RESULTS: The assignment helped students engage in learning research/EBP concepts, and they rated the assignment moderately helpful to understand components to appraise evidence. The majority of students were neutral toward or disagreed the TED Talk assignment was a satisfactory experience. Almost 60% of the students recommended the assignment be retained in the course. CONCLUSIONS: The TED Talk assignment was not a universally satisfactory experience. Differences in faculty approach in the course sections may have influenced the findings.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Students and clinicians are challenged to locate evidence to answer clinical questions. Searching experiences include frustration with words to query databases, lack of searching skills, lack of confidence in nursing databases, and questioning how many databases to search. To implement practice change based on best available evidence, search strategies need to be efficient and effective. METHOD: We replicated the systematic review by Stillwell, Vermeesch, and Scott, which used a specific search, with a sensitive search to compare search strategies to answer the clinical question. RESULTS: The specific search produced 5,108 articles, with eight being relevant; whereas the sensitive search produced 11,362 articles with nine being relevant. CONCLUSION: The sensitive search located the same eight studies and one additional study. If PubMed instead of MEDLINE had been used in the specific search, the results would have been identical. RESUMO

This is the 11th article in a series from the Arizona State University College of Nursing and Health Innovation's Center for the Advancement of Evidence-Based Practice. Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a problem-solving approach to the delivery of health care that integrates the best evidence from studies and patient care data with clinician expertise and patient preferences and values. When delivered in a context of caring and in a supportive organizational culture, the highest quality of care and best patient outcomes can be achieved. The purpose of this series has been to give nurses the knowledge and skills they need to implement EBP consistently, one step at a time. The final article in the series will be published in the September issue.
