BACKGROUND: Visceral leshimaniasis is a parasitic disease characterized by systemic infection of phagocytic cells and an intense inflammatory response. The progression of the disease or treatment may have an effect on hematological parameters of these patients'. Thus, the current study sought to compare the hematological profiles of visceral leishmaniasis patients before and after treatment with anti-leishmaniasis drugs. METHOD: An institutional-based retrospective cohort study was conducted among visceral leishmaniasis patients admitted to the University of Gondar comprehensive specialized referral hospital leishmaniasis research and treatment centre between September 2013 and August 2018. Hematological profiles were extracted from the laboratory registration book before and after treatment. Data were entered to Epi-info and exported to SPSS for analysis. Descriptive statistics were summarized using frequency and percentage to present with the table. The mean, standard deviation, median, and interquartile range were used to present the data. Furthermore, using the paired t-test and the Wilcoxon Signed rank test, the mean difference for normally and non-normally distributed data was compared. Spearman and Pearson correlation analysis were used to describe the relationship between hematological parameters and various variables. A P value of 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULT: With the exception of the absolute neutrophil count, all post-treatment hematological parameters show a significant increase when compared to pre-treatment levels. Prior to treatment, the prevalence of anemia, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia was 85.5, 83.4, and 75.8%, respectively, whereas it was 58.3, 38.2, and 19.2% following treatment. Furthermore, parasite load was found to have a statistically significant negative correlation with hematological profiles, specifically with white blood cell and red blood cell parameters. CONCLUSION: According to our findings, patients with visceral leishmaniasis had improved hematological profiles after treatment. The effect of treatment on parasite proliferation and concentration within visceral organs, in which the parasite load could directly affect the patient's hematological profiles, may be associated with the change in hematological profiles.

Aim: The aim of this study was to compare hematological parameters with the mean obstructive apnea duration (MOAD), mean mixed apnea duration (MMAD), mean central apnea duration (MCAD), mean total apnea duration (MTAD) and mean hypopnea duration (MHD), and blood oxygenation, other polysomnographic sleep parameters in patients with severe OSA.Material and methods: A retrospective study included 120 patients with severe OSA. The correlations between the hematological parameters with MOAD, MMAD, MCAD, MTAD, MHD, and blood oxygenation, other polysomnographic sleep parameters were analyzed.Results: There was a positive correlation between hgb with MOAD, MMAD, MTAD MCAD, MHD; mean oxygen desaturation, and the number of desaturation (≥5%). Also, hgb associated negatively with N1 sleep, WASO (wake time after sleep onset) and positively with REM, N2 sleep, total sleep time, and sleep efficiency. RDW and MOAD, MTAD, MHD were negatively related. Also, RDW related positively with sleep latency, WASO, and N1 sleep; negatively with sleep efficiency and REM sleep. There was no relationship between duration of respiratory events with NLR, PRL, and MPV.Conclusions: Hematological parameters, especially hgb and RDW, can be used to assess the severity of the disease in severe OSA patients in addition to AHI.

Although 12 g/day sulbactam/ampicillin (SBT/ABPC) is approved in Japan, differences in the frequency of adverse effects induced by conventional (≤6 g/day) and high (≥9 g/day) doses remain unclear. We performed a retrospective observational study on SBT/ABPC-treated hospitalized adult patients with pneumonia from October 2015 to January 2018 to compare the safety between high and low doses. Patients were divided into high-dose (≥9 g/day, n = 200) and low-dose (≤6 g/day, n = 246) groups. We used logistic regression to determine propensity scores for the high-dose and low-dose groups and compared the incidence of adverse effects after propensity score adjustment (n = 200 in each group). Following propensity score adjustment, the frequency of elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level was still significantly higher in the high-dose group than in the low-dose group (21% versus 11%, p = 0.006). In contrast, the frequencies of elevated alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase, and serum creatinine levels and decreased white blood cell and platelet counts, and incidence of anemia, were not. Changes in blood urea nitrogen levels, erythrocyte count, and hematocrit were not significantly different between the two dose groups. There were two cases of rash reported to the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency as an adverse effect in the high-dose group. Thirty-day mortality rates were not significantly different after propensity score adjustment. Our analysis suggests that an increase in the ALT grade was more frequent in patients treated with a daily dose of SBT/ABPC of ≥9 g.

OBJECTIVE: Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of dietary sucralose on diet preference and growth performance of weaned piglets, and a third experiment was a 28-d safety study to examine if high-dose sucralose could affect the health state of weaned piglets. METHODS: In experiment one, 48 piglets had free access to a corn-soybean based diet and the same diet supplemented with 150 mg/kg sucralose for 15 d. In experiment two, 180 piglets were blocked into 5 treatments with 6 replications. They were fed basal diets supplemented with 0, 75, 150, 225, and 300 mg/kg sucralose for 28 days. In experiment three, 108 piglets were randomly assigned to 3 treatments and fed diets supplemented with 0, 150 (suitable level), and 1,500 (ten-fold suitable level) mg/kg sucralose for 28 d. RESULTS: The experiment 1 showed that piglets preferred (p < 0.05) diets containing sucralose during experimental period. In experiment 2, piglets fed a diet supplemented with 150 mg/kg sucralose had a higher average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) than pigs in the control group and other treatment groups during the experiment period. The concentrations of sucralose over 150 mg/kg may decrease feed intake. However, no difference in feed conversion ratio was observed. In experiment 3, piglets fed diet supplemented with 150 mg/kg sucralose had a higher average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) than that of pigs in the control group and 1500 mg/kg treatment groups during the experiment period. Clinical blood metabolites, organ index and histological morphology were not significantly different between sucralose treatments. CONCLUSION: Sucralose can promote feed intake and thereby improve growth performance of weaned piglets. Moreover, inclusion of 1,500 mg/kg sucralose was demonstrated to have no observed adverse effects. Supplementing 150 mg/kg sucralose for weaned piglets is recommended in this study.

Juvenile rockfish (mean length 14.2 ± 1.9 cm, and mean weight 57.3 ± 5.2g) were exposed for 4 weeks with the different levels of dietary lead (Pb(2+)) at 0, 30, 60, 120 and 240 mg/L. The exposure concentration and period of Pb have induced significant amount of it the specific tissues of rockfish. The highest Pb accumulation was observed in the kidney tissue by the dietary lead exposure. The growth rate and hepatosomatic index were considerably inhibited over 120 mg/kg. The hematological parameters such as red blood cell (RBC) counts, hematocrit (Ht) value, and hemoglobin (Hb) concentration were significantly decreased over 60 mg/kg Pb concentration. In the inorganic components, the values of calcium and magnesium in plasma were significantly decreased. The glucose and cholesterol values were notably increased, whereas total protein was decreased. The enzyme components, glutamic oxalate transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvate transaminase (GPT), were significantly elevated by the dietary lead exposure, but no change was observed in alkaline phosphatase (ALP).

PURPOSE: Patients with liver cirrhosis sometimes suffer from high recurrence rates and postoperative complications. We previously reported that platelet-related hematological parameters are associated with the outcomes after incisional herniorrhaphy, and aim to evaluate the predictive value of these criteria in cirrhotic patients undergoing open umbilical herniorrhaphy. METHODS: This is a retrospective study. The data of 95 cirrhotic patients undergoing open umbilical herniorrhaphy were analyzed. Patients were grouped based on the recurrence and defined hematological values. Platelet-multiple-lymphocyte index (PLM), neutrophil-leukocyte ratio, lymphocyte-monocyte ratio, platelet-neutrophil ratio, systemic immune-inflammation index, and aspartate aminotransferase-leukocyte ratio values were calculated based on preoperative blood analyses. The outcomes were obtained from hospital records and follow-up calls to patients. RESULTS: Using cutoff values acquired by the Youden Index, we found a PLM value < 27.9, and the history of inguinal herniorrhaphy were revealed to be statistically significant in the recurrence based on univariant and multivariant analyses (p < 0.05). We further divided patients into two groups based on the cutoff value of PLM and found that a PLM value < 27.9 was significantly associated with the recurrence of incisional hernias (p = 0.018) and the occurrence of postoperative foreign sensation (p = 0.044), and tended to result in other postoperative complications such as cardiopathy, respiratory infection, hypoproteinemia, and hepatic diseases (p = 0.089). CONCLUSION: The preoperative hematological values, especially PLM, may indicate the outcomes in cirrhotic patients after open umbilical herniorrhaphy. Accurate identification of risks may alert the intraoperative and postoperative care for patients.

INTRODUCTION: Sepsis, a syndrome of organ dysfunction caused by an unregulated host response to infection. This study aimed to develop a novel sepsis diagnostic model of hematological parameters and evaluate its effectiveness in the early identification and prognosis of sepsis in emergency departments. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in Emergency Department. Cell population data parameters related to monocytes and neutrophils were obtained using the Mindary BC-6800 plus hematology analyzer. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the performance of the parameters and establish a diagnostic and prognostic model of sepsis, which was then verified with a validation cohort. RESULTS: Mon_XW exhibited the best diagnostic performance (area under the ROC curve [AUC] = 0.848, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.810-0.885, p < 0.001), followed by Neu_Y and Neu_YW (AUC = 0.777 95% CI: 0.730-0.824, p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis identified Mon_XW and Neu_Y as independent predictors, which were used to establish a diagnostic model named hematological parameter for sepsis (HPS). HPS demonstrated the best diagnostic performance with an AUC of 0.862 (95% CI: 0.826-0.898, p < 0.001), sensitivity of 70.0%, and specificity of 87.1%, compared to C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT). The validation cohort also found that the positive predictive value of HPS was 70.4% and the negative predictive value was 92.2%. CONCLUSION: The developed HPS model showed promising diagnostic efficacy for sepsis in the emergency department, which outperformed CRP and PCT in terms of sensitivity and specificity. By enabling early identification and prognosis of sepsis, that contributes to reducing sepsis-related mortality.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious worldwide health issue, particularly in developing nations like Ethiopia. Patients with tuberculosis experience a range of hematological, immunological, and biochemical alterations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate immunological, hematological, and biochemical alterations of newly diagnosed TB patients at Dessie comprehensive specialized hospital, Dessie, Ethiopia. Methods: A comparative, cross-sectional study was carried out to evaluate the immuno-hematological and biochemical changes in patients with tuberculosis at Dessie comprehensive specialized hospital from January to July 2018. One hundred sixty-four (164) newly diagnosed TB patients, and 80 apparently healthy controls were included consecutively. The variables were expressed in frequency, percentage, and mean ± SD. To compare mean ± SD of the groups or within the groups, we used an independent sample t-test. Statistical significance was defined as a P value less than 0.05. Results: Male TB patients had significantly high mean absolute WBC count, neutrophil count, lymphocyte, platelet count, and systemic immune-inflammation compared with male healthy controls (P=0.001, P=0.011 P=0.021, P=0.001, and P=0.018, respectively). The mean platelet count of female TB patients was significantly higher than that of the female control group (P=0.015). However, mean RBC counts, Hgb, HCT, and MPV of TB patients were significantly lower than those of male (p<0.001) and female healthy controls (P=0.022, 0.015, and 0.001, respectively). The TB patients had developed anemia (23.8%), WBC abnormalities (29.3%), thrombocytosis (11.6%), and thrombocytopenia (9.8%). The cases had significantly higher mean alanine amino transferase, total bilirubin, and glucose level, but the mean total protein, alkaline phosphatase, and total cholesterol of cases were significantly lower than healthy control groups. Conclusion: TB patients in this study showed significant alterations in a number of hematological and biochemical profiles. This indicates that hematological and biochemical profiles should be monitored and properly interpreted for the differential diagnosis of tuberculosis and evaluation of response to treatment.

HIV/AIDS is one of the most devastating infectious diseases affecting humankind all over the world and its impact goes beyond public health problems. This study was conducted to investigate the joint predictors of hemoglobin level and time to default from treatment for adult clients living with HIV/AIDS under HAART at the University of Gondar Comprehensive and Specialized Hospital, North-west Ethiopia. The study was conducted using a retrospective cohort design from the medical records of 403 randomly selected adult clients living with HIV whose follow-ups were from September 2015 to March 2022. Hemoglobin level was projected using Sahli's acid-hematin method. Hence, the hemoglobin tube was filled with N/10 hydrochloric acid up to 2 g % marking and the graduated tube was placed in Sahli's hemoglobin meter. The blood samples were collected using the finger-pick method, considering 22 G disposable needles. The health staff did this. From a total of 403 adult patients living with HIV/AIDS included in the current study, about 44.2% defaulted from therapy. The overall mean and median estimated survival time of adult clients under study were 44.3 and 42 months respectively. The patient's lymphocyte count (AHR = 0.7498, 95% CI: (0.7411: 0.7587), p-value < 0.01), The weight of adult patients living with HIV/AIDS (AHR = 0.9741, 95% CI: (0.9736: 0.9747), p-value = 0.012), sex of adult clients (AHR = 0.6019, 95% CI: (0.5979, 0.6059), p-value < 0.01), WHO stages III compared to Stage I (AHR = 1.4073, 95% CI: (1.3262, 1.5078), p-value < 0.01), poor adherence level (AHR = 0.2796, 95% CI: (0.2082, 0.3705) and p-value < 0.01), bedridden patients (AHR = 1.5346, 95% CI: (1.4199, 1.6495), p-value = 0.008), and opportunistic infections (AHR = 0.2237, 95% CI: (0.0248, 0.4740), p-value = 0.004) had significant effect on both hemoglobin level and time to default from treatment. Similarly, other co-morbidity conditions, disclosure status of the HIV disease, and tobacco and alcohol addiction had a significant effect on the variables of interest. The estimate of the association parameter in the slope value of Hgb level and time default was negative, indicating that the Hgb level increased as the hazard of defaulting from treatment decreased. A patient with abnormal BMI like underweight, overweight, or obese was negatively associated with the risk of anemia (lower hemoglobin level). As a recommendation, more attention should be given to those patients with abnormal BMI, patients with other co-morbidity conditions, patients with opportunistic infections, and low lymphocytes, and bedridden and ambulatory patients. Health-related education should be given to adult clients living with HIV/AIDS to be good adherents for medical treatment.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide ranking above HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis is continues to have a significant effect on public health and the leading cause of death due to high progression of HIV. The objective of current study was identify joint clinical determinants that affecting bivariate hematological parameter among TB/HIV co-infected adults under TB/HIV treatment in university of Gondar comprehensive specialized hospital. METHOD: The result of these study was conducted at university of Gondar comprehensive specialized hospital, Gondar, Ethiopia by using a retrospective cohort follow up study from September 2015-march 2022 G.C. The source of data in this study was secondary data obtained from patients chart. Bayesian approach of longitudinal linear mixed effect sub model was used in panel data set to get wide range of information about TB/HIV co-infected patients. RESULT: Out of 148 co-infected participants more than half of the patients (56.1%) and (52.7%) accounted for CPT and INH non users, of which 10.8% and 10.3% had the outcome of mortality respectively. The random intercept and slope model were selected for repeated measure hemoglobin level and hematocrit based on deviance information criteria (DIC), and probability of direction (Pd) under the full model. CONCLUSION: Current study revealed that clinical predictors red blood cell count, platelet cell count, fair and good treatment adherence, other ART regiment, IPT drug users, and viral load count < 10,000 copies/mL, were associated with high hemoglobin level concentration while, lymphocyte count, WHO clinical stage-IV,1e ART regiment, and patients with OIs results for low hemoglobin level concentration. Likewise, red blood cell count, platelet cell count, fair and good treatment adherence, IPT drug users, and viral load count < 10,000 copies/mL co-infected patients had high hematocrit, while lymphocyte count, WHO clinical stage-III,1c ART regiment, and patients with OIs significantly leads to low hematocrit. Health professionals give more attention to these important predictors to reduce progression of disease when the co-infected patients come back again in the hospital. In addition, health staff should conduct health related education for individuals to examine continuous check-up of co-infected patients.

Salinity has a significant influence on the physiology of freshwater aquatic organisms. However, there are few studies on the hematology and immunology of freshwater fish under high salinity. In the current study, we aimed to analyze the adaptive effect of salt stress on L. capito spleen immune function and hematology using transcriptomic analysis. We replicated a L. capito acute salinity stress model, and collected blood and spleens from freshwater and saltwater fish. It was found that salinity affected significantly the numbers of leukocytes, lymphocytes, neutrophils, and red blood cells, as well as the content of haemoglobin. Salt treatment resulted in a significant increase in the expression of HSP70, HSP90, CAT, SOD, and GPX1 genes in L. capito spleens. Transcriptomic analysis revealed a total of 546 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in spleens, including 224 up-regulated DEGs and 322 down-regulated DEGs. In addition, GO enrichment analysis revealed immune system process, multicellular organismal process, and biological regulation of genes with the most differences in biological processes. KEGG enrichment analysis showed that the regulation of lipolysis in adipocyte, FoxO signaling pathway, Hematopoietic cell lineage signaling pathway, and HIF-1 signaling pathway were significantly enriched. L. capito adapted oxidative to high salinity through FoxO signaling pathway and immune to high salinity through Hematopoietic cell lineage signaling pathway. At the same time, we selected 10 DEGs for qRT-PCR detection, and the results showed that the qRT-PCR results were consistent with our RNA-Seq results, indicating that transcriptome sequencing was accurate and reliable. In conclusion, our results demonstrated that the improvement of antioxidant capacity, heat shock protein and immunity are involved in the molecular mechanism of L. capito adapting to high salinity. Our findings provided a rationale for further study on high salinity adaptation and related enrichment pathways.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between hematological parameters on the first day of life and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants. METHODS: This retrospective study involved all premature infants admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit from January 2017 to June 2022. BPD was diagnosed based on hypoxia exposure for ≥28 days. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet mass index (PMI) were compared between infants with and without BPD. Multivariate analysis was conducted to evaluate the association between hematological parameters and BPD. RESULTS: This study involved 124 premature infants (48 with BPD, 76 without BPD). The BPD group had a lower gestational age and lower weight. The NLR, MPV, and PLR were considerably higher and the PLT and MPI were lower in the BPD than non-BPD group. After adjusting for covariates, logistic regression analysis suggested that the NLR, PLT, and PMI were independent risk factors for BPD. Moreover, the receiver operating characteristic curve indicated that the NLR, PLT, and PMI were reliable predictors of BPD. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that a higher NLR and a lower PLT and PMI on the first day may increase the risk of BPD.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the predictive value of a logistic model utilizing hematological parameters in diagnosing occupational lead poisoning. METHODS: This retrospective study (September 2020-December 2022) included patients with occupational lead poisoning. Differences in hematological parameters were compared between individuals with occupational blood lead poisoning and healthy individuals. We used logistic regression analysis to develop a diagnostic prediction model for occupational blood lead poisoning. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and corresponding area under the ROC curve values were used to assess the diagnostic value of hematological parameters and logistic models. RESULTS: Compared with controls, several indicators were significantly higher in the group with blood lead poisoning, but others were significantly lower. Logistic regression analysis showed that the red blood cell distribution width coefficient of variation (RDW-CV), neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and percentage of small red blood cells (Micro%) were independent factors in diagnosing occupational blood lead poisoning. The logistic regression model constructed based on these three parameters had sensitivity 78.7% and specificity 83.8% for diagnosing occupational lead poisoning. CONCLUSION: We identified RDW-CV, NLR, and Micro% as independent predictors in the diagnosis of occupational lead poisoning. A logistic regression model that includes these may contribute to better detection of occupational lead poisoning.

According to the ICH S3A Q&A, microsampling is applicable to pharmaceutical drugs and toxicological analysis. Few studies have reported the effect of microsampling on the toxicity of immunotoxicological drugs. The aim of this multicenter study was to evaluate the toxicological effects of serial microsampling on rats treated with azathioprine as a model drug with immunotoxic effects. Fifty microliters of blood were collected from the jugular vein of Sprague-Dawley rats at six time points from day 1 to 2 and 7 time points from day 27 to 28. The study was performed at three organizations independently. The microsampling effect on clinical signs, body weights, food consumption, hematological parameters, biochemical parameters, urinary parameters, organ weights, and tissue pathology was evaluated. Azathioprine-induced changes were observed in certain hematological and biochemical parameters and thymus weight and pathology. Microsampling produced minimal or no effects on almost all parameters; however, at 2 organizations, azathioprine-induced changes were apparently masked for two leukocytic, one coagulation, and two biochemical parameters. In conclusion, azathioprine toxicity could be assessed appropriately as overall profiles even with blood microsampling. However, microsampling may influence azathioprine-induced changes in certain parameters, especially leukocytic parameters, and its usage should be carefully considered.

INTRODUCTION: Acute pulmonary embolism (APE) is a typical cardiovascular emergency worldwide. Mean hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) is a standard indicator of anemia. Studies on the association between MCHC and APE are scarce. We aimed to investigate the relationship between MCHC and APE. METHODS: Clinical data were extracted from the Medical Information Bank for Intensive Care (MIMIC)-III. Adult (≥18 years) patients with APE admitted for the first time were included in this study. An analysis was conducted to evaluate the association between MCHC and the prognosis of patients by the Cox regression analysis, generalized additives models and Kaplan-Meier survival curves. The primary outcome was 30-day mortality, and the secondary outcomes were 1-year and 3-year mortality. RESULTS: A total of 813 patients who met the selection criteria were enrolled, of whom 130 (16.0%) died within 30 days of admission. Univariate Cox regression indicated that MCHC was significantly associated with mortality (30-day: HR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.66-0.82, P < 0.001; 1-year: HR = 0.80, 95% CI = 0.74-0.86, P < 0.001; 3-year: HR = 0.82, 95% CI = 0.77-0.88, P < 0.001). MCHC remains stable after adjusting multiple models. Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that patients with lower MCHC had a poorer 30-day prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: Lower MCHC is an independent risk factor for increased mortality in patients with APE. As an inexpensive biomarker, MCHC should receive more attention.

OBJECTIVE: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a viral disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The clinical manifestations and the evolution of patients with COVID-19 are variable. In addition to respiratory involvement, COVID-19 leads to systemic involvement and can affect the hematopoietic system. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of hematological and hemocytometric parameters in predicting the severity of patients with COVID-19. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study at Mohammed VI university Hospital from 1 March to 11 November 2020. We collected demographic characteristics and hematological findings of incident COVID-19 cases. RESULTS: A total of 245 patients were included in our study. We found that the rate of lymphopenia was significantly reduced in patients who were severely affected by COVID-19. Additionally, the rate of neutrophilia, the neutrophil side fluorescence light signal, monocyte fluorescent intensity, monocyte size, the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and the lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio were significantly elevated in patients who were severely affected by COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS: These results are consistent with the literature regarding the predictive value of these markers. A prospective validation in a large population with a longer follow-up is required.

OBJECTIVE: The present study was performed to evaluate the protective effects of methanol extract of Cedrus deodara against cisplatin induced. METHODS: Myelosuppression in albino Wistar rats. All experimental animals were administered with cisplatin on 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th day to induce bone marrow toxicity and rats were treated with methanol extract of C. deodara for 21 days. Blood samples were collected from all the animals on day 1st, 7th, 14th and 21st after 1 h before the administration of the drugs and hematological parameters like RBC, WBC, platelets, hemoglobin, hematocrit, eosinophils, basophils, neutrophils, lymphocytes, bleeding time and clotting time were determined were determined. At 21st, all rats were sacrificed and bone marrow samples were collected. The part of bone marrow samples was used for the determination of antioxidant enzymes and remaining were subjected to histopathological examination. RESULTS: The animals of therapeutic groups administered with extract of C. deodara have exhibited significant rise in hematological parameters and shorten bleeding time and clotting time when compare to toxic control animals on the day 14 and day 21. The histopathological examination revealed the regeneration of bone marrow cells in the extract treated animals. There was significant reduction in lipid peroxidation and increase in antioxidant enzymes was found in extract treated animals. CONCLUSIONS: The methanol extract of C. deodara of have shown significant protective effects against cisplatin induced myelosuppression in albino Wistar rats.

This study was undertaken to investigate the hematological and biochemical changes in experimentally infected goats with Besnoitia caprae from the time of infection till 360 days post-infection (PI). Six male goats were inoculated subcutaneously with 13 × 10(7) bradyzoites of B. caprae, and blood samples were collected from the jugular vein. The total erythrocyte and total leukocyte counts, hematocrit value, and differential leukocyte counts were determined. Serum biochemical analysis, including the total protein, albumin, total globulin, cholesterol, triglyceride, chloride, testosterone, calcium (Ca(2+)), inorganic phosphorus, sodium (Na(+)), potassium (K(+)), iron (Fe(2+)), glucose, serum amyloid A (SAA), haptoglobin (Hp), fibrinogen, ceruloplasmin, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, and alkaline phosphatase, was undertaken. Skin biopsy from the limbs were collected at weekly intervals and histologically examined for Besnoitia cysts. Cysts were present in the skin biopsies of the leg of the infected goats from day 28 PI. There were variations in hematological analyses, but no significant difference was seen. From day 30 to 360 PI, results showed that SAA, Hp, fibrinogen, and ceruloplasmin concentrations increased, whereas testosterone concentrations decreased. Infected goats exhibited decrease of albumin and increase of serum total protein and globulin concentrations. By contrast, there were no significant differences in the remained analyses concentrations.

Hematological parameters play a key role in assessing the disease states and physiological status of birds, however the reliable information of hematological reference values for Lohmann silver in the pre- and post-laying periods is limited. Thus, the aim of this study was to research the effect of age on hematological parameters and provide reliable reference intervals for commercial Lohmann silver layer. Blood samples were obtained from 231 laying hens at different ages (5-37 wk) with 4-wk sampling intervals. A total of 12 hematological parameters including leucocytes (WBC, 109/L), red blood cell (RBC,1012/L), hemoglobin (HGB, g/L), hematocrit (HCT,%), mean corpuscular volume (MCV, fL), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH, pg), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC, g/L), red cell distribution width (RDW,%), platelet count (PLT,109/L), mean platelet volume (MPV, fL), platelet volume distribution width (PDW), plateletcrit (PCT, fL) were determined with a reference value advisor. One-ANOVA and Tukey test were utilized to test for significant differences of each parameter between ages. Our findings showed that these parameters were significantly affected by age, except for HCT in the pre-laying period. And reference intervals for all parameters except MCH, MCHC, MCV, MPV, and PDW in the pre-laying period were higher than that in the post-laying period. The results of this study may serve as indispensable information when diagnosing the health of Lohmann silver layer.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 is a pandemic viral disease that has affected the Indian population very badly with more than 8.46 million cases and > 0.125 million deaths. AIM: Primary objective of the study is to establish the role of hematological, coagulation and inflammatory biomarkers in early identification of clinically severe covid-19 cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted from July 2020 to August 2020 at a dedicated COVID-19 referral hospital in central India. Only RT-PCR confirmed COVID-19 positive 300 cases admitted in the hospital were included in this study. Based on the clinical assessment, patients were categorised as mild, moderate, and severe groups as per ICMR guidelines. Blood samples of all cases were tested for haematological, coagulation and inflammatory biomarkers and mean values were compared among the three groups of patients. RESULTS: 46% patients belonged to >60 years of age group. Hematological parameters like total leukocyte count, absolute neutrophil count, Neutrophil: Lymphocyte ratio, Platelet: Lymphocyte ratio significantly increased with lymphocytopenia (P=0.001). Coagulation profile(D-dimer and PT) and inflammatory biomarkers like CRP, LDH, ferritin, procalcitonin and NT- Pro BNP, all were significantly increased with severity of patients(p=0.001). ROC plotted for all the parameters between severe v/s non-severe cases showed that CRP, LDH and D-dimer had a good discriminative precision with AUC >0.8. CONCLUSION: We suggest that biochemical markers like CRP, LDH and D-dimer can be used as a screening tool to differentiate severe patients from non-severe patients of Covid-19 disease in order to identify severe disease at early stage for optimal utilization of resources & reducing further morbidity & mortality.
