RESUMO

This essay looks at, and compares, Hotel World by Ali Smith and Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf and attempts to understand the differences within both the formal and philosophical/political outlook of the two works. Presuming stream-of-consciousness as both a set of formal prosaic styles and a genre, the essay argues that the way the novels utilize formal style is indicative of their individual politics in counterintuitive ways. Furthermore, it argues that by looking at these two novels we can begin to map a lineage of queer stream-of-consciousness works and explore how those perspectives have changed over time.

In modern large hotels, due to a large number of rooms and complex layouts, it is difficult for customers to find rooms, which increases a lot of workloads for hotel attendants to guide. In this paper, a hotel intelligent guidance system based on face recognition is designed. After entering the customer's facial photos, the room guidance and customer management are carried out through face recognition. With this, hotels can move toward card-free management, green environmental protection, and save on resources. With these improvements, hotel management will be card-free and green. Each monitoring device of the system adopts dual STM32 core architecture, in which STM32H7 is responsible for face recognition, while STM32L4 is the main control chip, which is responsible for data exchange, guest room guidance and other work. The monitoring master not only guides, but also uploads customer check-in information to the cloud platform to facilitate the management of the hotel. The system adopts contactless information collection and guidance, which improves the intelligence and humanization of the hotel, and has a good application prospect.

Hotels operate continuously and are known to be one of the contributors of global pollution. Strategies like adoption of green practices would be a remedy to mitigate pollution and their effects for environmental sustainability. This study focused on green practice's implementation by the five-star hotels in Kampala district, Uganda. Specifically, it explored the benefits achieved and effects encountered by the management of the hotels as a result of implementing green practices. A questionnaire survey and interviews were employed to collect the required data from the employees of the five-star hotels. Energy conservation, waste management, and environmental purchasing with their respective coefficient of variances of 12.6, 14.5 and 17.2 were some of the green practices implemented by the hotels. Green practice's adoption by the five-star hotels culminated into increased profits, competitive advantage, saved on the costs of the materials used and retained some customers. The study recommends that there should be continuous awareness and strengthening of training of the employees about green practices' implementation, together with government involvement in all matters concerning enforcement of green practices. In addition, the article suggests managerial implications and opportunities for future research.

Airbnb was able to recover faster than hotels from the downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This research note examines whether Airbnb's success resulted from tourists feeling safer in Airbnbs due to their greater opportunities for social distancing. Nearly 9500 U.S. adults were surveyed between March 2020 and July 2021, and asked the degree to which they would be concerned about staying in a hotel or Airbnb, within the context of the pandemic. Very similar levels of concern were associated with both lodging types, even as this concern decreased as the pandemic unfolded. The similar levels of concern towards hotels and Airbnbs suggest that other factors better explain Airbnb's comparatively rapid recovery from the pandemic. Implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Due to the detrimental effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the hotel sector, pandemic crisis management research has received lots of academic attention, from studies in sales-marketing to human resource management. However, financial management has been largely overlooked in the agenda of pandemic crisis management and hotel resilience. Therefore, this paper aims to address the research gap by exploring the role of capital structure management in maintaining financial stability and resilience capacities of hotel firms during this evolving and unpredictable Covid-19 pandemic. Using a database of 1882 firm-quarter observations of 196 hotel firms in 30 countries from Quarter 3 2018 to Quarter 2 2021, it is found that low debt capital structure mitigates the adverse impact of the pandemic on hotel firms' financial stability during this turbulent time; particularly the negative impacts caused by government restrictions on both domestic and international travel. The benefit of low debt levels is more pronounced for more vulnerable hotels such as small, less diversified, and slow growing hotel firms. Also, hotel firms that have less long-term debt are more financial stable and resilient during pandemic period. Research outcomes suggest that financial management, in particular capital structure policies should be a critical part of hotel resilience building and crisis management strategy for hotel firms.

The unprecedented global health concerns pertaining to COVID-19 have impacted the hotel industry. In order to ameliorate such concerns, hotels are sending out marketing communication messages. However, whether the messages effectively impact hotel consumers' behaviors is still unknown. To fill this research gap, this study empirically tested the effect that the perceived severity of COVID-19 (PSC) has on hotel booking intentions as well as the roles of message appeal type (rational vs. emotional) and brand loyalty. The data was collected using a scenario-based online survey (n = 311) and analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression. The rational appeal type had a greater positive influence on hotel booking intentions, which suggests that it is preferable for COVID-19 related messages. The results also indicated that PSC had a negative influence on booking intentions for the low loyalty group, and brand loyalty still played a key role even amidst the COVID-19 crisis.

The Great Resignation has brought significant challenges to the recovery of the hospitality industry from the depression caused by the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Prior studies have revealed that the leading cause of the Great Resignation is negative employee experience. However, few empirical studies have been conducted to obtain deep insights into the negative experiences of hospitality employees. Hotel managers still lack the knowledge to help them resolve the workforce problem and maintain competitiveness during the pandemic. This study proposes a novel framework, named HENEX, that uses data-mining technologies and employees' online reviews about hotels to identify the factors that lead to hospitality employees' negative experiences and changes in these factors caused by COVID-19. We demonstrate the effectiveness of HENEX through a case study that involves major hotels in Australia. The findings could help hotel managers develop strategies to resolve the workforce problem and maintain competitiveness during the Great Resignation period.

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected the hospitality industry. Many have treated the crisis as a temporary shock. However, there are those who see it as a turning point. Treating the hospitality industry as a complex adaptive system, this research uses the organizational resilience framework to investigate how hospitality organizations responded to the crisis. A mixed methods approach was employed, and two studies were conducted. A sample of managers from Omani hotels were interviewed and a content analysis was performed on the websites and annual reports of a sample of international hotel brands. The results revealed that the Omani industry's response was mostly limited to coping, whereas the international industry was active in anticipating, coping, and adapting to the pandemic. Strong support is provided for the notion of the pandemic as a turning point. An action framework has been developed to support firms in keeping pace with the industry's evolution.

This paper presents a conceptual model reflecting relationships between visionary leadership and service employee creativity through organizational inertia and knowledge-donating behavior. The research sample consists of 423 employees of 21 four-star hotels in Egypt. The PLS-SEM results revealed that service employee creativity is enhanced when they realize their leaders have visions for the future, are capable of overcoming organizational inertia, along with keeping up with simultaneous changes. The results revealed that this behavior dampens the negative relationship between visionary leadership and organizational inertia. The theoretical and practical implications of the extracted results are discussed. By integrating cognitive appraisal and social exchange theories, this paper examines the linkage of supervisors' abusive reactions with psychological distress through their subordinates' fear of negative evaluation. This paper also investigates the moderating role of negative reciprocity. Data were gathered from 412 employees at 15 five-star hotels in Egypt and analyzed using PROCESS 4.0 macro in SPSS (Model 5). The findings revealed that abusive supervision was strongly positively connected with psychological distress caused by FNE. Furthermore, negative reciprocity may reduce the abusive supervision-psychological distress relationship. The positive effect of abusive supervision on psychological distress was weaker among hotel employees who held high levels of negative reciprocity. The PROCESS and narratological results highlight the need of taking negative reciprocity into account while investigating undesirable workplace behavior (i.e., abusive acts of supervisors) in the hospitality context by providing fruitful theoretical and practical contributions. The present research applied a triangulation approach in order to examine the mediating effect of job insecurity and the moderating effect of perceived susceptibility to COVID-19 (PSC) in the Job demands and resources model (JD-R model). Questionnaire and follow-up interview data were collected at two points in time from 292 hotel front-line employees and 15 hotel senior and department managers in Phuket, Thailand. Quantitative results indicated that job insecurity fully mediated the relationship between job demands and job burnout, as well as the relationship between job demands and work engagement. In addition, PSC partially moderated the research model. More specifically, the impact of job insecurity on work engagement is reduced when PSC is low and increased when PSC is high; the impact of job insecurity on job burnout is reduced when PSC is high and increased when PSC is low. Qualitative results further verified the findings of the quantitative study.

We investigated a cluster of SARS-CoV-2 infections in a quarantine hotel in Taiwan in December 2021. The cluster involved 3 case patients who lived in nonadjacent rooms on different floors. They had no direct contact during their stay. By direct exploration of the space above the room ceilings, we found residual tunnels, wall defects, and truncated pipes between their rooms. We conducted a simplified tracer-gas experiment to assess the interconnection between rooms. Aerosol transmission through structural defects in floors and walls in this poorly ventilated hotel was the most likely route of virus transmission. This event demonstrates the high transmissibility of Omicron variants, even across rooms and floors, through structural defects. Our findings emphasize the importance of ventilation and integrity of building structure in quarantine facilities.

We report detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) in an asymptomatic, fully vaccinated traveler in a quarantine hotel in Hong Kong, China. The Omicron variant was also detected in a fully vaccinated traveler staying in a room across the corridor from the index patient, suggesting transmission despite strict quarantine precautions.

Several studies have elucidated the link between outdoor noise and depression, but the relationship between indoor noise levels and depression symptoms in residential and public places remains unclear. This study was a multicenter observational study with a cross-sectional design. In 2019, a total of 10 545 indoor noise levels on-site and 26 018 health data from practitioners were collected from 2402 hotels in 111 cities. Indoor daily noise data levels were detected, and PHQ-9 questionnaires were used to collect health data. Logistic analysis was used to determine the association between depression score and noise level, negative binomial regression was used to determine potential risks. The geometric mean indoor noise level was 38.9 dB (A), with approximately 40.9% of hotels exceeding the 45 dB value (A). Approximately 19.1% of hotel workers exhibited mild and above depressive symptoms. In addition to functional zoning, geographic location, central air conditioner, decoration status, and other factors had an impact on noise levels (p < 0.05). Results of logistic and negative binomial regression showed the following: (1) there was significantly positive association between indoor noise and high depression scores above 2 (OR = 1.007, 95% CI: 1.002, 1.012) and (2) some sub-groups were more susceptible to this effect, especially for the younger female workers working in the first-tier cities, having higher education level, lower level of income, smoking, and longer working hours. This study confirms an early potential effect of indoor noise on depression. It is recommended to implement evidence-based measures to control noise sources in hotels.

BackgroundLegionnaires' disease is a respiratory illness often associated with hotels and travel. Spain is a major tourist destination and one of the European countries with most cases of Legionnaires' disease , both community- and travel-associated. However, the prevalence of Legionella in tourist facilities is unknown.AimThe present investigation aimed to survey the tourist facilities in the Balearic Islands, Spain, for Legionella prevalence.MethodsWe visited tourist facilities in the Balearic Islands in two different periods (2006-2010 and 2015-2018) and took water samples following national and international guidelines. Legionella was investigated by culture methods following international standards (ISO 11731:1998).ResultsWe evaluated 13,472 samples from 465 facilities. Bacteria of the Legionella genus were detected in 65.4% of the surveyed facilities. Contamination of the facilities was significantly higher during the second decade (54.5 vs 78.6%). The most frequent colonisers were L. pneumophila serogroup 2-14. We detected the pathogen in 15.9% and 6.9% of hot and cold water distribution systems samples, respectively. The Legionella contamination rate in cold water systems samples was higher when free chlorine levels were < 0.2 mg/L and at > 25 °C temperatures, while in the hot water systems samples, the contamination rate was higher at < 50 °C. Of the samples from hot tubs, 10.9% were contaminated.ConclusionLegionella prevalence in hotels in the Balearic Islands was high but the contamination rates depended on the installations. Corrective measures are still needed to improve Legionella control.

BACKGROUND: Immigrants comprise over 40% of the low-wage workforce. They are more likely to be employed in service industries, paid less, and experience more illness and injuries than their native counterparts. DESIGN/OBJECTIVE: The aim of this cross-sectional pilot study was to explore the relationship between immigrant workers' stressors and health. SAMPLE: Twenty-five female Mexican immigrant hotel workers. MEASUREMENTS: Surveys and blood samples were analyzed and compared to national data. Descriptive statistics and linear regression were used for analysis. RESULTS: Longer length of stay, older age at migration, and higher Demands of Immigration (DI) were significantly associated with more chronic conditions. Higher DI were significantly associated with more depressive symptoms. This is comparable to national data (n = 468) which shows a significant relationship between length of stay, Allostatic Load (AL), and chronic conditions (ß = 0.14, p = .043; ß = 0.13, p = .025). CONCLUSIONS: Immigrant-specific factors affect individuals' health. More studies are needed to further explore the relationship between DI and health among foreign-born workers.

A COVID-19 outbreak occurred in May 2020 in a public housing building in Hong Kong - Luk Chuen House, located in Lek Yuen Estate. The horizontal cluster linked to the index case' flat (flat 812) remains to be explained. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were conducted to obtain the wind-pressure coefficients of each external opening on the eighth floor of the building. The data were then used in a multi-zone airflow model to estimate the airflow rate and aerosol concentration in the flats and corridors on that floor. Apart from flat 812 and corridors, the virus-laden aerosol concentrations in flats 811, 813, 815, 817 and 819 (opposite to flat 812, across the corridor) were the highest on the eighth floor. When the doors of flats 813 and 817 were opened by 20%, the hourly-averaged aerosol concentrations in these two flats were at least four times as high as those in flats 811, 815 and 819 during the index case's home hours or the suspected exposure period of secondary cases. Thus, the flats across the corridor that were immediately downstream from flat 812 were at the highest exposure risk under a prevailing easterly wind, especially when their doors or windows that connected to the corridor were open. Given that the floorplan and dimension of Luk Chuen House are similar to those of many hotels, our findings provide a probable explanation for COVID-19 outbreaks in quarantine hotels. Positive pressure and sufficient ventilation in the corridor would help to minimise such cross-corridor infections.

Given that the United Nations views environmental, social, and governance (ESG) as a practical framework for anchoring responsible corporate behavior to achieve its sustainable development goals, this study constructs an autoregressive jump intensity trend (ARJI-trend) model to determine if ESG can improve future resilience and create crisis-resilient value for chained-brand hotel corporations from the effects of COVID-19. The findings indicate that the ARJI-trend model indeed captures both the permanent and transitory components of the hotel corporation's ESG performance related to stock return dynamics. When ESG rating is taken into account, the following conclusions emerge: 1) the transitory component of time-varying return variance decreases but the permanent component does not; 2) the hotel corporation portfolios with a lower transitory component experiences a higher return, implying that the hotel corporations with a higher ESG rating appear to be more defensiveness; and 3) with proper asset reallocation, a portfolio centered on strong ESG-conscious hotel corporations is a safe-haven asset during market turmoil.

The pandemic crisis has caused a change in tourism trends that affect the way hotels are managed. In accordance with the United Nations (2020), hotels must guarantee safe experiences for customers by incorporating sustainability measures. Collaboration between health and tourism authorities and the tourism industry is key. To test this proposal among hotels in Spain, 3 online focus groups and 25 personal interviews with 36 urban and 28 rural hotels were held in order to define the indicators. The questionnaire was applied to a sample of 475 urban hotels out of 443 rural hotels. The conclusions were: 1.) While in urban areas the testing protocols, especially for workers, are followed by most hotels, in rural areas hotel managers do not consider it as a priority in daily activity due to the reduced contact they have. 2.) A change in trends in the sustainable management of both rural and urban hotels is justified. 3.) Urban and rural hotels are more likely to incorporate collaborative strategies with tourism and health authorities to reduce the negative impact of COVID-19. According to the estimates of the hotels, the implementation of these measures would help to start the recovery process of the hotel industry.

This research contributes to the literature on consumption displacement by exploring the pandemic-led shifts in hotel booking patterns. We perform a longitudinal analysis and a critical comparison of bookings before and after COVID-19 outbreak, focusing on the booking window, length of stay, and booking channel. Data include weekly bookings of a representative sample of Balearic Islands' hotels between 2018 and 2021. Results indicate that the pandemic has led to a drop in the volume of bookings and a remarkable change in booking patterns. Specifically, we find a temporal shift in booking behavior, characterized by a lower anticipation and a change in the tourism supply chain, namely a decrease in the share of intermediated bookings. The expected increase in the frequency of exogenous shocks, such as weather-related and sanitary crises, could affect purchasing behaviors, thus enhancing the relevance of this study, with managerial implications for industry and destination managers.
