RESUMO

Organic digital education (ODE) includes online medical education content that can take various forms, such as blogs, social media, videos, podcasts, or infographics. Multimedia ODE platforms have unique benefits and have quickly become an essential part of medical education. Modern medical educators with competency in digital teaching modalities can leverage these for teaching as well as career development and dissemination of scientific research. The ID Digital Institute is a digital education program with a curriculum designed to equip infectious diseases (ID) professionals with the skills to appraise, create, curate, and integrate ODE into their teaching and career. We share the structure, content, and lessons learned from the ID Digital Institute program. We also illustrate how digital education skills can present unique opportunities to align with current and future transplant and immunocompromised host infectious diseases education efforts.

BACKGROUND: Digital modalities which enable asynchronous learning, such as audio podcasts and videos demonstrating procedures, may benefit acquisition and retention of knowledge and clinical skills. The main objective of this nationwide cross-sectional survey study was to evaluate key aspects and factors related to usage of audio podcasts and procedural videos in anaesthesiology and intensive care. METHODS: A 20-item multiple-choice-question online survey was created through a consensus process including pilot testing among residents and consultants. Data were collected over a 3-month period, September-November 2023. RESULTS: The survey was completed by 466 anaesthetists. More than a third reported using procedural videos ≥1 time per week, whereas fewer than one in four participants used audio podcasts at least once per week. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that working at a university hospital, male sex, and younger age were independently associated with podcast use ≥1 time per week, with the highest odds ratio (OR) for younger age (<40 years vs. ≥40 years old; OR 5.86 (95% confidence interval 3.55-9.67), p < .001). Younger age was also significantly associated with higher frequency of video use (OR 1.71 (1.13-2.58), p = .011), while working predominantly in intensive care was associated with a lower frequency of video use. Podcasts were often used during commuting (42.3%), household work (30.7%), and exercise (24.9%), indicating a role in multi-tasking. Approximately half of respondents expressed that audio podcast-based learning has a moderate to very large positive impact on acquisition of theoretical knowledge, as well as practical skills. A vast majority, 85.2%, reported that procedural videos have a moderate to very large impact on development of clinical skills. CONCLUSION: Audio podcasts and procedural videos are appreciated tools with potential to supplement more traditional didactic techniques in anaesthesiology and intensive care. Procedural video use is common, with perceived large effects on development of clinical skills. Further data are needed to fully understand learning outcomes, quality of peer-review processes, and potential sex-differences.

BACKGROUND: In the digital era, developing effective teaching methods is crucial due to the challenges of maintaining students' concentration amidst distractions. This study assessed the effects of learning-promoting factors both across group boundaries and within RCT learning groups examined in our previous study on the effectiveness of online versus live teaching. METHODS: The participants' experiences in the domains of Concentration, Anticipation, Liking and Desire to reuse were evaluated online immediately after a lesson on diagnosing pediatric respiratory issues implemented either in a Live, Live-stream, Vodcast or Podcast setting. The students rated their experiences on a scale of 1-10 with scores above a median of 8 indicating high experience levels in each factor. Learning was evaluated using a Webropol e-Test immediately and five weeks after the teaching session. The 15-minute test, comprised of 10 multiple-choice questions and real-life video scenarios, measured both theoretical and diagnostic skills. The test score scale ranged from - 26 to 28 points. RESULTS: High concentration was experienced by 70/72 (97.2%) students in the Live, 41/75 (54.7%) students in the Live-stream, 53/72 (73.6%) students in the Vodcast and 36/79 (45.6%) students in the Podcast teaching groups (P < 0.01). High concentration promoted learning the most, resulting in a 1.93 score improvement in the short-term test and a 1.65 score improvement in the long-term test. Among those with high concentration, the average test scores ranged from 21.9 to 23.4, while the range for low concentration was 18.3-20.0. CONCLUSION: In our study, good concentration promoted higher test scores in comparison with low concentration across all the learning modalities, both in digital and live settings. However, the live teaching modality resulted in the highest levels of concentration. Our results suggest that teachers should use various teaching modalities and utilize related special features to engage learners and maintain their concentration.

Asynchronous learning continues to gain popularity in medical education. One medium to facilitate asynchronous learning is the podcast. Currently, there are a limited number of hematology/oncology (H/O) podcasts geared towards residents and fellows ("trainees"). To address this need, we created a series of podcasts covering fundamental H/O topics for H/O fellows and internal medicine residents rotating on H/O services. We evaluate the effectiveness of this approach in this pilot study. Between September 2022 and February 2023, residents received recommended episodes via email prior to their rotation. Following their rotation, they received a survey. H/O fellows were encouraged to listen to any available episodes during the study period, after which they also received a survey. The survey collected baseline user information and included a 5-point Likert scale to determine if the podcast episodes were effective educational tools. Summary description was performed by the authors. In total 7 internal medicine residents (27 eligible) and 13 H/O fellows (18 eligible) completed the survey, for a total group of 20 respondents. The trainees found that the podcast helped with inpatient and outpatient management, was clinically relevant, and helped with clinical decision-making. They also agreed that the fundamentals of H/O are amenable to the podcast platform and are likely to continue to use podcasts as learning tools in H/O. This pilot study suggests that podcasts are an effective supplemental learning tool for the fundamentals of H/O in graduate medical education. The use of podcasts as educational tools should be encouraged for trainees.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may emerge in late life in the context of illness, role changes, and life review, leading to complications in disease management. The "Talking Later" podcast was developed as an accessible educational product to improve knowledge about late-life PTSD. We describe the process of systematically developing a ten-episode podcast following Kern's six-step curricular model. Following release, the podcast was evaluated via listenership analytics, external clinician feedback survey (N = 45), and internal team survey (N = 9). In 22 months since release, the podcast was played or downloaded 10,124 times across 45 countries. In the external survey, 97% of clinician experts reported the episodes as engaging and informational; 87% stated that no more than general knowledge of PTSD was required to enjoy the podcast. Qualitative analysis of open-ended feedback items found that participants were interested in learning about additional comorbidities and diversity issues related to late-life trauma reengagement. Both the external and internal survey identified discrete elements for improvement. Results suggest the podcast was engaging and informational to a diverse clinical audience. Podcasts represent a relatively new way to deliver educational content. Further consideration of their pedagogical value and limits is warranted.

For the past three years, the Institut de formation interhospitalier Théodore-Simon (Ifits) has been embarking on a magnificent adventure to meet its student nurses, collecting their words and testimonials in a series of podcasts, the main aim of which is to shed as much light as possible on the reality of nursing studies. This article retraces the genesis of the project and demonstrates the added value of this tool for future professionals and trainers alike.

BACKGROUND: Childbirth education can help pregnant individuals feel in control, relieve anxiety and fear, and decrease pain perception. However, many barriers exist that impede patients from obtaining adequate childbirth education, especially in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic. Advances in technology, such as podcasts, can allow for asynchronous patient education. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the effect of a labor education podcast on personal perception of control and patient satisfaction during childbirth. STUDY DESIGN: This was a randomized controlled trial that included nulliparous, low-risk women with singleton gestations who reached 36 weeks' gestation at 2 academic hospitals in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Participants were randomized at 28 weeks and 0 days of gestation to usual education (control) or podcast education (intervention), which included links to 7 labor-related podcast episodes on patient-suggested topics that were available on widely-used podcatchers. Primary outcomes were assessed with a 3-question birth satisfaction survey and the Labour Agentry Scale to evaluate personal perception of control during childbirth. Secondary outcomes included the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale score. Analyses were performed as intention-to-treat. Parametric and nonparametric data were compared using the Student t-test or Wilcoxon rank-sum test, as appropriate. RESULTS: A total of 201 women were randomized, and 153 were included in the final analysis (78 in podcast and 75 in control group). There were no significant differences in maternal demographics. Patients in the podcast group had higher median birth satisfaction scores compared with the control group (20 [18-21] vs 18 [16-21]; P=.002), without a significant difference in median Labour Agentry Scale scores (57 [50-63] vs 54 [47-62]; P=.12). When restricting analysis to patients who underwent induction, Labour Agentry Scale scores were significantly higher in the podcast group (58 [53-64] vs 54 [47-61]; P=.045), representing an increased perception of control. However, birth satisfaction score was not different between the groups (P=.06). The most downloaded podcasts were on induction and labor anesthesia. More than 95% of participants would recommend the podcasts to family and friends. CONCLUSION: An educational podcast on labor topics was well-received, increased patient satisfaction overall, and increased labor agentry among those who were induced. Podcasts are a promising educational modality to improve patient experience during childbirth, and warrant further exploration.

A good patient-doctor relationship and positive communication strongly influence patient quality of life and clinical outcomes. Demonstrating the importance of communication in the patient-doctor relationship are three patient authors who have 48 years of combined real-world experience with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in the USA. Using their own personal experiences, these patient authors and a healthcare professional provide suggestions related to improving patient-doctor relationships and communication at each stage of the journey from diagnosis to learning to live with CML. The authors believe these recommendations are applicable to patients with CML and with other diseases, their caregivers and healthcare professionals.

BACKGROUND: In the digitalized world, there is a need for developing new online teaching and learning methods. Although audio and video recordings are increasingly used in everyday learning, little scientific evidence is available on the efficacy of new online methods. This randomized trial was set out to compare the learning outcomes of online and classroom teaching methods in training healthcare students to diagnose breathing difficulties in children. METHODS: In total, 301 students of medicine (N = 166) and nursing (N = 135) volunteered to participate in this total sampling study in 2021-2022. The students were randomized into four groups based on teaching methods: classroom teaching (live, N = 72), streamed classroom teaching (live-stream, N = 77), audio recording (podcast, N = 79) and video recording (vodcast, N = 73). Each 45-minute lesson was taught by the same teachers and used the same protocol. The students participated an online test with their own electronic device at three distinct time points: prior to any teaching (baseline), immediately after teaching (final test), and five weeks later (long-term memory test). The test consisted of 10 multiple-choice questions on recognizing breathing difficulties from real-life videos of breathing difficulties in pre-school age. The test results scale ranged from - 26 to 28 points. Statistical analyses were performed using ANOVA multiple comparison and multiple regression tests. RESULTS: The mean scores (SD) of the final tests were 22.5 (5.3) in the vodcast, 22.9 (6.1) in the live, 20.0 (5.6) in the podcast (p < 0.05 vs. live) and 20.1 (6.8) in the live-stream group. The mean difference of test scores before and after the lesson improved significantly (p < 0.05) in all study groups, with 12.9 (6.5) in the vodcast, 12.6 (5.6) in the live, 10.9 (7.0) in the live-stream and 10.4 (6.9) in the podcast group. The improvement in test scores was significantly higher in the vodcast (p = 0.016) and the live (p = 0.037) groups than in the podcast group. No significant differences were found between the other groups. However, there was a nonsignificant difference towards better results in the vodcast group compared to the live-stream group. CONCLUSIONS: While the new online teaching methods produce learning, only video learning is comparable to team teaching in classrooms.

The podcasts were recorded in Spanish and included Spanish supplementary consumer health information from credible resources such as MedlinePlus en Espanol. The podcasts covered important topics about COVID-19 such as vaccines, clinical trials, and social distancing. It also includes other relevant topics that are affecting the Latinx community.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a common neurological condition that often causes stiffness, tremor and slow movement. People living with PD are likely to encounter nursing students throughout their journey from pre-diagnosis to death. Despite this, there is a paucity of evidence about current practice in PD education amongst nursing students. The present study provides an evaluation of a co-designed Parkinson's Awareness audio podcast amongst nursing students in Northern Ireland. METHODS: Following co-design of an audio podcast about PD, a mixed methods evaluation was carried out. 332 student nurses completed pre-/post-test questionnaires about their knowledge and perceptions of PD before and after listening to the audio podcast. Further to this, 35 student nurses participated in focus-group interviews six months following listening to explore how the podcast influenced practice. RESULTS: Student nurses posted a mean score of 52% before listening to the audio podcast. This mean increased to 80% post-test. These findings were statistically significant (p < 0.001), demonstrating significant increases in PD awareness after listening. Findings from the focus groups suggested that the audio podcast improved empathy and practice towards people with PD. The findings also suggested that students perceived audio podcasts to be a good way to learn about PD. CONCLUSION: Provision of a co-designed audio podcast about PD has the potential to improve student nurse knowledge and practice related to PD as evidenced in this study.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has seen extended lockdowns, isolation periods and travel restrictions across many countries around the world since early 2020. Some countries, such as Australia and New Zealand, closed their international borders in early 2020 preventing researchers travelling to other parts of the world. To facilitate the exposure of our students' work, and for them to meet international researchers, as well as foster a sense of coastal community, we started a zoominar series (seminars via Zoom) in April 2020. The Coast2Coast zoominar series had therefore humble origins but we soon discovered that there was an appetite for more widely sharing science across the coastal research disciplines. The Coast2Coast zoominar grew rapidly, attracting researchers from many countries around the world who presented and attended fortnightly online seminars. In just one year and a half we had 38 presentations with roughly 1900 attendees, creating a sense of community and belonging for the researchers involved. In early 2021, two of the co-authors, Giovanni (GC) and Ana (AVC) decided to expand and take this sense of community further creating the Coast2Cast podcast series, where researchers are asked research and non-research questions. In only 7 months, the podcasts have attracted more than 3700 listeners. Importantly, while the main prerequisite was high-quality and impactful research, diversity and inclusion were also a priority in selecting and inviting speakers for the zoominars and guests for the podcast. Importantly, our survey results suggest that there is a place for online events similar to Coast2Coast and Coast2Cast in a pandemic-free future, and that the coastal community involved has greatly benefited from such initiatives.

BACKGROUND: The SARS-CoV­2 pandemic has been a major challenge for graduate education. Teaching had to be digitalized within a very short time. This also affected the areas of anesthesiology, intensive care, emergency, pain and palliative care at the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the University of Leipzig. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this questionnaire-based survey was to find out which courses can be digitalized from the students' point of view and which forms of teaching are associated with obstacles. In addition, we examined which technical infrastructure supports digitalization best. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the course of digitalization the lecture series in the areas of palliative care and pain medicine had to be revised but also digital alternatives for seminars, simulation courses and bedside teaching had to be created. Video podcasts, digital learning material, educational films and video conferences were used for the digital implementation of the courses. Depending on the course, different digital methods were combined. In addition, a discussion forum for the exchange between faculty and students was established. An online evaluation was then carried out to assess the content. RESULTS: A total of 82 4th and 5th year medical students took part in the survey. More than 60% of students rated the learning effect of digital courses as "high" or "very high". Video podcasts of the lectures (45.1%) and digital bedside teaching (34.1%) were rated as the most effective ways of imparting knowledge. In particular, 92.7% of the surveyed students believed that the lectures could be replaced digitally on a permanent basis. For bedside teaching (3.7%) and emergency simulation course (1.2%) this is far less the case. In the majority of cases (56.1%), students needed 30-90 min daily for the preparation and post-processing of the contents. Just under 90% gave the digital courses offered by the hospital an overall grade of 1 or 2 (on a scale from 1 = best to 6 = worst). CONCLUSION: The SARS-CoV­2 pandemic posed major challenges for graduate teaching. At the same time, however, it also helped to overcome often long-standing hurdles to the digitalization of teaching. In the course of the digital semester, different teaching formats could be digitalized to varying degrees: Lectures can be digitally reproduced particularly well from the students' perspective, whereas the digitalization of bedside teaching has not been possible in most cases.

OBJECTIVE: Podcasts have recently been introduced into psychiatry education, despite limited evidence evaluating podcasting in medical education. PsychEd is an educational, publicly available podcast targeting junior learners in psychiatry. This study characterized PsychEd's listeners and the podcast's role in their education. METHODS: The study involved a mixed-methods survey, followed by semi-structured phone interviews with respondents. There were 97 survey responders in total, of whom 9 participated in a telephone interview. Survey responses were coded as interval data and analyzed descriptively using statistical software. Interviews were transcribed and coded for emergent themes using a grounded theory model. RESULTS: PsychEd listeners represented an interprofessional audience, with 46 respondents (48%) being physicians or physicians in training, and 34 (35%) being allied mental health professionals. All respondents (100%) rated the podcast as "helpful" or "very helpful" for general knowledge. Listeners were attracted to PsychEd for the auditory learning format, the opportunity to review existing knowledge, the focus on core topics, the Canadian expertise, and the presentation of "clinical pearls." Respondents highlighted valuable qualities of a psychiatry podcast: conversational, case-based, narrative approach, longer episodes (i.e., 30-60 minutes) as compared to other medical specialties, and a clinical focus. Furthermore, they identified podcasts as an opportunity for shared interprofessional curricula. CONCLUSION: This study is the first to examine the motivations and experiences of listeners of a psychiatry educational podcast. The findings support existing literature on the benefits of podcasts in medical education. Future studies should explore the impact of podcasts on learning and behaviors.

Effective science communication has been identified as one of the core competencies of neuroscience education as articulated at the 2017 FUN Workshop. Yet most undergraduate students do not receive explicit instruction on how to effectively communicate science to a diversity of audiences. Instead, communication assignments typically help students become proficient at sharing scientific information with other scientists through research articles, poster presentations or oral presentations. This presents a missed opportunity to instruct students on the complexities of communicating to the general public, the importance of which has come into sharp focus during the COVID-19 pandemic. Translating research findings so they can be understood by a non-specialist audience requires practice and deep learning and can act as a powerful teaching tool to help students build science literacy skills. Here I share the blueprint to a broadly-oriented science communication assignment built to address the core competencies of neuroscience education. The assignment acts as the final project for a 400-level neuropharmacology course at a small public liberal arts university. Students work in small groups to identify a topic of interest and research, script, and record an audio podcast geared towards a general audience. The assignment is scaffolded to allow students to work towards the final submission in small steps and to receive feedback from the instructor and their peers. These feedback steps pair with opportunities to revise their work to further develop students' communication skills. Initial feedback from students suggests the assignment promoted deeper learning and higher engagement with course content.

BACKGROUND: The 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic drastically reduced learning opportunities for medical students. We sought to determine the cost and success of implementation of a podcast for a surgical department in a large academic hospital. METHODS: We created a podcast series for Israeli medical students during the COVID-19 epidemic based on the Medical Student Core Curriculum of the American College of Surgeons / Association for Surgical Education. Episodes were available for free download or streaming on a designated website and popular podcast platforms. Podcast analytics were used to measure public listeners and uptake. RESULTS: Total development time was 90 hours at an estimated cost of $7091 USD. A total of 10 episodes were released between March 21, 2020 and August 31, 2020. An average of 9 ± 1.26 h (range 2-6) was required to generate each episode, including 3.4 ± 1.26 h (2-6) for content review and 5.6 ± 2 h (4-10) for audio production. An average episode ran for 35.9 ± 4.3 min (28-42). Podcasts recorded a total of 5678 downloads, with an average of 228 and 336 downloads per episode in the first 30 and 90 days, respectively. The average daily downloads before the students returned to clinical rotations (March 21-April 30) was 48 ± 58.3 (7-283;) compared to 16 ± 7.4 after their return (1-38; P< 0.01). Estimated costs to produce a video-based education series would have been significantly more. CONCLUSION: Podcasts can serve as a cost-effective and quickly produced instructional tool to supplement online learning. Further research is required to determine the efficacy of podcasts versus video-based education modules.
