Resumo

Due to its high nutritional value, broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica Plenck) is one of the most popular vegetables worldwide. This study assessed 36 phenotypic characteristics of 111 broccoli varieties to understand the phenotypic diversity of new broccoli varieties and improve their breeding speed with advantages and characteristics in China, including 108 new varieties and three varieties of common knowledge. The genetic diversity, the principal component, and the cluster of phenotypic characteristics of broccoli varieties were further investigated. The results showed that the coefficients of variation of 36 characteristics ranged between 11.18 % and 94.99 %, with their diversity index between 0.26 and 1.82. The 111 broccoli varieties were further classified into eight groups, primarily attributed to the differences in phenotypic characteristics, including curd weight, main stem thickness, plant development degree, plant height, and anthocyanin coloration. The cumulative contribution rate of the first five principal components reached 81.186 %, corresponding to 12 representative phenotypic traits. The analysis indicated that the phenotypic characteristics of broccoli were rich in diversity, especially for several characteristics appreciated by the market, such as weight, curd firmness, and anthocyanin coloration. This study revealed the basic information on the genetic diversity of new broccoli varieties in China from 2017 to 2019 and provided potential breeding strategies for broccoli to meet diverse market demands.

Chenopodium quinoa Willd. it is an Andean cereal of great importance for human consumption due to its high nutritional value. In Colombia there is a high phenotypic and genotypic variability within quinoa crops, which has not been studied and has been maintained by the same farmers cycle after production cycle. The objective of this study was to carry out an interpopulation characterization of quinoa cultivated in different producing municipalities of the department of Boyacá, in Colombia, for which 19 morphological descriptors were used, which were evaluated in situ in nine municipalities and analyzed through descriptive statistics, principal component analysis, correlation and conglomerates. In the evaluation of the quantitative traits for all the populations, it was observed that the most variable descriptors were Number of teeth lower leaf (DHI), Lower leaf length (LHI), Width upper leaf (AHI) and Number of teeth upper leaf (DHS). Great segregation between and within individuals of Blanca de Jericó and Piartal was observed for panicle and leaf color and shape, stem color, presence of teeth, and axils on upper and lower leaves. A classification key is proposed that allows in the field to be able to morphologically differentiate the genotypes of Piartal and Blanca de Jericó. This research shows that among the most cultivated genotypes in the department of Boyacá, there is still an important phenotypic diversity given at the inter and intra-individual level, due to the phenological state and the agroclimatological conditions of the different producing regions.


Chenopodium quinoa Willd. é um cereal andino de grande importância para a alimentação humana por causa do seu alto valor nutricional. Na Colômbia, existe uma alta variabilidade fenotípica e genotípica nos cultivos de quinoa, que não foi estudada e tem sido mantida pelo mesmo produtor ciclo após ciclo de produção. O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma caracterização interpopulacional da quinoa cultivada em diferentes municípios produtores do departamento de Boyacá, na Colômbia. Para tanto, foram utilizados 19 descritores morfológicos, avaliados in situ em nove municípios e analisados por meio de estatísticas descritivas, análise de componentes principais, correlação e conglomerados. Na avaliação dos caracteres quantitativos para todas as populações, observou-se que os descritores mais variáveis foram: número de dentes da folha inferior (DHI), comprimento da folha inferior (LHI), largura da folha superior (AHI) e número de dentes da folha superior (DHS). Entre os indivíduos de Blanca de Jericó e Piartal e dentro deles, observou-se grande segregação quanto à cor, formato da panícula e folha, cor do caule, presença de dentes e axilas nas folhas superiores e inferiores. É proposta uma chave de classificação que permite no campo poder diferenciar morfologicamente os genótipos de Piartal e Blanca de Jericó. Esta pesquisa mostra que, entre os genótipos mais cultivados no departamento de Boyacá, ainda existe uma importante diversidade fenotípica em nível inter e intraindividual, em razão do estado fenológico e das condições agroclimatológicas das diferentes regiões produtoras.

In fisheries, the phenomenon known as fishing down food webs is supposed to be a consequence of overfishing, which would be reflected in a reduction in the trophic level of landings. In such scenarios, the resilience of carnivorous, top predator species is particularly affected, making these resources the first to be depleted. The Serra Spanish mackerel, Scomberomorus brasiliensis, exemplifies a predator resource historically targeted by artisanal fisheries on the Brazilian coast. The present work analyzes landings in three periods within a 50-year timescale on the Parana coast, Southern Brazil, aiming to evaluate whether historical production has supposedly declined. Simultaneously, the diet was analyzed to confirm carnivorous habits and evaluate the trophic level in this region. Surprisingly, the results show that from the 1970's to 2019 Serra Spanish mackerel production grew relatively to other resources, as well as in individual values. The trophic level was calculated as 4.238, similar to other Scomberomorus species, consisting of a case where landings increase over time, despite the high trophic level and large body size of the resource. The results agree with a recent global assessment that has demystified a necessary correlation between high trophic level and overexploitation, but possible factors acting on the present findings are discussed.


Na pesca, o fenômeno fishing down food webs, ou 'pescando teias tróficas abaixo', expressa a redução do nível trófico na composição das capturas, e tem origem tradicionalmente atribuída à sobrepesca. Sob intenso extrativismo, a resiliência das espécies carnívoras, predadoras de topo, é particularmente afetada, sendo seus estoques os primeiros a entrarem em depleção. A cavala, ou serra, ou sororoca, Scomberomorus brasiliensis, é exemplo de recurso predador historicamente alvo da pesca artesanal, de pequena escala, na costa brasileira. O presente trabalho analisa os valores de desembarque do recurso em três períodos ao longo de 50 anos na costa paranaense, sul do Brasil, com objetivo de avaliar se sua produção tem efetivamente diminuído. Ainda, estuda-se a dieta da espécie na região, para confirmar seus hábitos carnívoros e avaliar o nível trófico na região. Os resultados mostram que, surpreendentemente, dos anos 1970 para 2019 a produção de S. brasiliensis tem aumentado em valores absolutos, bem como relativamente à de outros recursos, em que pese o nível trófico 4,238, similar a outras espécies do gênero. Constata-se que a pesca da cavala na região de estudo constitui um caso de aumento nos desembarques a despeito de elevado nível trófico e grande tamanho corpóreo. Os resultados concordam com recente levantamento em nível mundial, que nega existir correlação necessária entre sobrepesca e nível trófico alto, mas fatores que podem explicar os resultados do presente trabalho são discutidos.

Resumo

The use of longitudinal measurements is an essential practice both in Psidium guajava L. breeding and in other perennial crops in which covariance structures can be introduced to explain the form of dependence between measurements. Hence, this study aimed to analyze six covariance structures to identify one that best described the correlation between the repeated measurements in time in traits of guava full-sib families. The repeatability coefficient for each trait was estimated and the minimum number of evaluations required for estimates representing the population was determined. The work was performed based on average data of three yield-related variables from nine harvests of a guava tree population evaluated from 2011 to 2018. The best model was chosen based on the Akaike and Schwarz Bayesian information criterion. The autoregressive covariance structure best represented the dependencies among families between crops for all traits. The number of variables of fruits and total yield per plant presented repeatability estimates higher than 0.5 and may be essential traits for indirect selection of others, such as fruit mass, which had an estimated repeatability of 0.24, proving low regularity in the repetition of the character from one cycle to another. It was also possible to define four harvests as the minimum acceptable number of observations necessary on the same individual for these traits; therefore, the repetitions represented the individuals.(AU)

This study aimed to describe the epidemiological indexes of mastitis, milk quality and udder hygiene in the Compost Barn system, as well as to search for associations between isolated pathogens from milk with compost characteristics. Three dairy herds participated in the study, and the samples were collected during different periods on each farm. Individual milk samples were collected in duplicate for SCC analysis and microbiological culture. Environmental pathogens caused most cases of clinical mastitis on farm 2, and contagious pathogens caused the most cases on farm 1. Bed moisture was not associated with the incidence of environmental pathogens. Most of the animals remained in good udder hygiene during the study. Poor udder hygiene contributed to the increased incidence of environmental pathogens in one of the farms. A higher number of animals with a hygiene score of ≥ 2 were observed during the warmer and rainfall periods. There was no association between hygiene scores and somatic cell counts. The results suggest that pathogens isolated from milk in animals confined in Compost Barn under tropical climate are like other confinement systems adopted elsewhere. The year period influenced the udder hygiene score, reinforcing the importance of bed management throughout the year.


O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever os índices epidemiológicos da mastite, da qualidade do leite e da higiene do úbere em animais confinados no sistema Compost Barn, bem como buscar associações entre patógenos isolados do leite e características do composto. Três rebanhos leiteiros participaram do estudo e as amostras foram coletadas em diferentes períodos em cada fazenda. Amostras individuais de leite foram coletadas em duplicata para análise de CCS e cultura microbiológica. Patógenos ambientais causaram a maioria dos casos de mastite clínica na fazenda 2, e na fazenda 1 a maioria dos casos foi em decorrência de patógenos contagiosos. Amostras de material da cama foram coletadas em duas fazendas para análise da densidade bacteriana e da umidade. A umidade da cama permaneceu dentro da faixa de controle durante o estudo e não foi associada à incidência de patógenos ambientais. A maioria dos animais permaneceu com boa higiene de úbere durante o estudo. A falta de higiene do úbere contribuiu para o aumento da incidência de patógenos ambientais em uma das fazendas. Durante o período mais quente e mais chuvoso, um número maior de animais com escore de sujidade ≥2 foi observado em todos os rebanhos. Não houve associação entre escore de sujidade e contagem de células somáticas em qualquer uma das três fazendas. Os resultados indicam que o perfil de patógenos isolados do leite em animais confinados em Compost Barn sob clima tropical é semelhante a outros sistemas de confinamento adotados em outros lugares. O período do ano influenciou o escore de higiene do úbere, o que reforça a importância do manejo da cama ao longo do ano.

O interesse por produtos lácteos funcionais tem motivado o estudo e a prospecção de novas bactérias lácticas. Neste contexto o objetivo deste trabalho foi explorar a potencial associação de Leuconostoc mesenteroides LB10.4 e Lactococcus lactis L4A8 isolados de leite de búfala e identificar aplicações em matriz alimentar. Foram realizados testes de atividade antimicrobiana, influência das bacteriocinas e avaliação da eficiência das bactérias ácido lácticas (BAL) individualmente e associadas frente a espécie de Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644 aplicadas em caldo Tryptic Soy Broth e em matriz láctea. Na avaliação da atividade antimicrobiana, Leuconostoc mesenteroides LB 10.4 e Lactococcus lactis L4A8 foram capazes de inibir Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 e Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644 com halos de inibição variando de 8 a 16 mm e 6 a 18 mm, respectivamente, pelos dois métodos testados. Na avaliação do efeito das bacteriocinas, os resultados demonstraram melhor controle inibitório dos patógenos pela nisina nas concentrações de 1% e 2%, com halos de inibição entre 14 a 24 mm. A avaliação da eficiência das BAL individualmente e associadas frente a espécie de Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644, demonstrou que os isolados em associação são capazes de inibir com mais efetividade a bactéria patogênica, sendo observada uma redução na contagem de L. monocytogenes de 2,67x107 UFC/g para 1,35x104 UFC/g após 240 horas, em matriz alimentar. As bactérias lácticas Leuconostoc mesenteroides LB10.4 e Lactococcus lactis L4A8 apresentaram características promissoras quanto ao seu potencial inibitório, não sendo inibidas pela pediocina. Destaca-se com esses resultados, a importância de estudar o leite de búfala como fonte de novos candidatos de bactérias lácticas autóctones para aplicação em alimentos.(AU)


The interest in functional dairy products has motivated the study and prospection of new lactic bacteria. In this context, the aim of this study was to explore the potential association of Leuconostoc mesenteroides LB10.4 and Lactococcus lactis L4A8 isolated from buffalo milk and to identify applications in food matrix. Tests of antimicrobial activity, influence of bacteriocins and evaluation of the efficiency of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) individually and associated against the species of Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644 applied in Tryptic Soy Broth and in milk matrix were performed. In the evaluation of antimicrobial activity, Leuconostoc mesenteroides LB 10.4 and Lactococcus lactis L4A8 were able to inhibit Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644 with inhibition halos ranging from 8 to 16 mm and 6 to 18 mm, respectively, by the two methods tested. In evaluating the effect of bacteriocins, the results showed better inhibitory control of pathogens by nisin at concentrations of 1% and 2%, with inhibition halos between 14 and 24 mm. The evaluation of the efficiency of LAB individually and associated against the species of Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644, showed that the isolates in association are able to more effectively inhibit the pathogenic bacteria, with a reduction in the L. monocytogenes count of 2.67x107 CFU /g to 1.35x104 CFU/g after 240 hours, in food matrix. The lactic acid bacteria Leuconostoc mesenteroides LB10.4 and Lactococcus lactis L4A8 showed promising characteristics regarding their inhibitory potential, not being inhibited by pediocin. With these results, attract attention the importance of studying buffalo milk as a source of new candid ates of autochthonous lactic acid bacteria for application in food.(AU)


El interés por los productos lácteos funcionales ha motivado el estudio y prospección de nuevas bacterias ácido lácticas. En este contexto, el objetivo de este trabajo fue explorar la asociación potencial de Leuconostoc mesenteroides LB10.4 y Lactococcus lactis L4A8 aislados de leche de búfala e identificar aplicaciones en matriz alimentaria. Se realizaron pruebas de actividad antimicrobiana, influencia de bacteriocinas y evaluación de la eficiencia de bacterias ácido lácticas (BAL) individualmente y asociadas frente a las especies de Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644 aplicadas en caldo Tryptic Soy Broth y en matriz de leche. En la evaluación de la actividad antimicrobiana, Leuconostoc mesenteroides LB10.4 y Lactococcus lactis L4A8 fueron capaces de inhibir Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 y Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644 con halos de inhibición de 8 a 16 mm y de 6 a 18 mm, respectivamente, por los dos métodos probados. Al evaluar el efecto de las bacteriocinas, los resultados mostraron un mejor control inhibitorio de patógenos por parte de la nisina a concentraciones de 1% y 2%, con halos de inhibición entre 14 y 24 mm. La evaluación de la eficiencia de las BAL de forma individual y asociada frente a la especie de Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644, mostró que los aislados en asociación son capaces de inhibir más eficazmente las bacterias patógenas, con una reducción del recuento de L. monocytogenes de 2,67x107 UFC/g a 1,35x104 UFC/g después de 240 horas, en matriz alimentaria. Las bacterias del ácido láctico Leuconostoc mesenteroides LB10.4 y Lactococcus lactis L4A8 mostraron características promisorias en cuanto a su potencial inhibidor, no siendo inhibidas por la pediocina. The application of quality control tests, such as the comet assay, are essential when adipose-derived stem cells are cultured for therapeutic purposes. However, the steps involved in the development of this assay should be investigated, in order to reduce their influence on genomic damage in cells. The study aimed to evaluate if the cell culture process causes DNA damage, and if variations in the lysis time and pH of the electrophoresis buffer interfere in the genotoxicity results. Four different comet assay protocols were evaluated, and the effects of lysis time and pH conditions of the electrophoresis buffer solution were stated as follows: 2 hours and pH 12; 24 hours and pH 12; 2 hours and pH ≥ 13 and 24 hours and pH ≥ 13. The tail moment was analyzed, and results indicated that at the time cells were detached from the flasks, there was little damage to the DNA in the adipose-derived stem cells, which was confirmed by evaluation of the expression of mRNA genes involved in damage and repair processes of genetic material. Also, the tail moment values ​​did not show significant differences among the four evaluated protocols (p < 0.05), with no indication of damage when compared to the positive control (p < 0.05). Thus, any of the tested protocols can be applied in genotoxicity tests with adipose-derived stem cells, without causing damage to them.(AU)

The aim of the current report is to describe a cutaneous candidiasis case affecting a canine individual treated at the University Veterinary Hospital of State University of Maranhão (UEMA), in São Luís City. The patient had three-month history of skin diseases; it had been previously subjected to several treatments based on antibiotics, corticosteroids and antifungal drugs that have failed to show clinical improvements. Dermatological assessment has indicated generalized moist dermatitis, intense skin desquamation, alopecia, pruritus and meliceric crusts along the animal's body, mainly in its dorsal region. Complementary tests, such as skin cytology and microscopy, trichogram, qualitative PCR and serology for canine visceral leishmaniasis, as well as fungal culture and antifungigram were requested based on this scenario. Serology recorded inconclusive results for leishmaniasis, whereas PCR recorded negative results in the presence of the agent's DNA. Cytology, microscopy and trichogram results have evidenced fungal infection in the assessed samples. Moreover, mycological culture and antifungigram resulted in the growth of Candida sp. specimens capable of resisting antifungal agents such as amphotericin B, fluconazole, itraconazole and nystatin. The therapy adopted after candidiasis diagnosis confirmation comprised oral doses of manipulated ketoconazole, in combination to topical therapy with shampoo based on moisturizing formulas associated with Miconazole and Chlorhexidine (at 2%), for four weeks. After 30 days, when the adopted therapy was over, the aforementioned animal presented remission of the previously observed lesions and fully improved condition.

Considerada uma atividade de risco, a pesca registra um elevado índice de sinistralidades, sendo a maioria não notificada, e pouco treinamento na prevenção de acidentes. Neste sentido, com o objetivo de avaliar o perfil e as condições de trabalho de pescadores da Baía do Sol, Ilha de Mosqueiro, em Belém do Pará, foi efetivado um levantamento por meio de um questionário aplicado em forma de entrevista entre os meses de setembro e novembro de 2017. Com base nos questionários aplicados (n=74), observa-se que a comunidade de pescadores da Baía do Sol não difere de maneira significativa de outras comunidades pesqueiras já estudadas. No entanto, duas características ganharam destaque no perfil dos entrevistados: o nível de escolaridade, bem acima da média para o estado do Pará; e a faixa etária, onde grande parte dos pescadores encontra-se na faixa de idade abaixo dos 40 anos. Por outro lado, devido a condições socioeconômicas, essa comunidade pesqueira e talvez toda a categoria de pescadores artesanais precisa de atenção por parte dos órgãos governamentais, no sentido do desenvolvimento de tecnologias adequadas para EPI's, com distribuição gratuita.(AU)


Fishing is considered one risky activity, with a high accident rate, most of which are not notified, and little training in accident prevention. In order to assess the profile and working conditions of fishermen from Baía do Sol, Mosqueiro Island, in Belém do Pará, a survey was carried out through a questionnaire applied in the form of an interview from September to November 2017. Based on the questionnaires applied (n=74), it is observed that the fishing community of Baía do Sol does not differ significantly from other fishing communities already studied. However, two characteristics gained prominence in the profile of the interviewees: the level of education, well above the average for the state of Pará; and the age group, since most of the fishermen are in the age group below 40 years. On the other hand, due to socioeconomic conditions, this fishing community and perhaps the entire category of artisanal fishermen needs attention from government agencies, in the sense of developing appropriate technologies for PPE's, with free distribution.(AU)

Sin embargo, dos características destacaron en el perfil de los entrevistados: el nivel de educación, muy por encima del promedio del estado de Pará; y el grupo de edad, donde la mayoría de los pescadores tienen menos de 40 años. Simultaneous selection for various agronomic traits, cooking time and mineral concentration are major challenges for common-bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) breeding programs. The authors of this study proposed to analyze genetic gain estimates obtained by direct and indirect selection using selection indices and economic weights for 13 traits, and to determine the most efficient selection strategy for the simultaneous selection of fast cooking, mineral-biofortified common bean cultivars with high agronomic performance. For this purpose, three experiments were carried out in different growing seasons to evaluate 49 common bean cultivars of different grain types. Agronomic performance was evaluated based on six traits; cooking time was determined using a Mattson cooker; and the concentration of six minerals was analyzed in samples of raw grains. Significant genotype × environment interaction or genotype effects were observed for all traits, indicating the existence of genetic variability. Direct selection resulted in high genetic gain estimates for individual traits, but caused undesirable changes in one or more of the traits under selection. The classic, base, desired-gains and rank-sum selection indices tested with six economic weights do not provide genetic gain estimates favorable to the selection of all traits. The multiplicative index is the best selection strategy for use in the breeding program when aiming at the simultaneous selection of fast cooking, mineral-biofortified common bean cultivars with high agronomic performance.

Background: Goat farming has been on the rise in Brazil in recent years. Overall, 93% of the national herd is concentrated in the Northeast, with the state of Paraíba being the largest goat milk producer in the country. Considering Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) as a sanitary issue for the development of animal farming with risks for human health and that is a notifiable disease, this research was structured with the objective of confirming the presence and performing a molecular characterization of MAP in goat milk destined for processing plants in the semiarid region of the Brazilian Northeast. Materials, Methods & Results: Samples from 179 production units and 5 collective bulk tanks and 4 samples of pasteurized goat milk were analyzed through Real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Genetic material (DNA) for MAP was found in the goat milk sample from 1 production unit (1/179). From this positive sample, 9 lactating goats were identified in the original property, 7 of which showed MAP DNA in milk samples (77.77%). The characterization of the nucleotide sequence detected in the positive sample has 99% identity with KJ173784. Discussion: One sample (1/179), from the production units, had MAP genetic material (DNA) detected using the molecular test. Samples from these production units represent the milk from all lactating goats from each producer. Therefore, it was possible to identify from which farm the samples originated, allowing individual animals to then be tested, with milk samples collected from 9 goats and MAP DNA detected in 7 of them (77.77%) via PCR. Control and/or prevention programs need this type of surveillance in reason that it allows the tracking of possible foci from milk samples collected from dairy products or cooling stations. The use of PCR to detect MAP foci via goat milk is thus advantageous because samples are obtained in a non-invasive manner, with faster results when compared to the culture technique. The low detection via PCR in goat milk may be related to factors such as the small amount of MAP eliminated and the intermittent excretion in asymptomatic animals, as also false-positive samples. Samples from the collective bulk tanks was negative. It is possible that the combination of milk from all the properties diluted the amount of MAP. This suggests that the sensitivity of the PCR can be improved if the samples are obtained from the pooled milk from the same property. In some regions of Brazil, for example, showed the frequency of Zona da Mata region of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, found 1.94% of positive samples (9/464) and 9.76% (4/41) of properties with at least 1 positive sample for MAP. Different results to what were found in the semiarid region of Paraíba, where climate and production characteristics are different. Goats are susceptible to 3 strains: type "S" (Sheep), "Bison type" and type "C" (Cattle). Previous contact with this species may explain the similarity between the strain found in goat milk and those detected from bovine samples. This must also be taken into consideration during diagnosis and upon implementation of control measures for paratuberculosis in goats. Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis was recorded for the first time in goat milk in the semiarid region, which may reveal a potential biological risk to humans and suggests the need for active surveillance of the agent.

Abstract Extracellular vesicles are nanoparticles secreted by cell and have been proposed as suitable markers to identify competent embryos produced in vitro. Characterizing EVs secreted by individual embryos is challenging because culture medium itself contributes to the pool of nanoparticles that are co-isolated. To avoid this, culture medium must be depleted of nanoparticles that are present in natural protein source. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the culture medium subjected to nanoparticle depletion can support the proper in vitro development of bovine embryos. Zygotes were cultured in groups on depleted or control medium for 8 days. Nanoparticles from the medium were characterized by their morphology, size and expression of EVs surface markers. Isolated nanoparticles were labelled and added to depleted medium containing embryos at different developmental stages and evaluated after 24 hours at 2, 8-16 cells, morula and blastocyst stages. There were no statistical differences on blastocyst rate at day 7 and 8, total cell count neither blastocyst diameter between groups. However, morphological quality was better in blastocysts cultured in non-depleted medium and the expression of SOX2 was significantly lower whereas NANOG expression was significantly higher. Few nanoparticles from medium had a typical morphology of EVs but were positive to specific surface markers. Punctuated green fluorescence near the nuclei of embryonic cells was observed in embryos from all developmental stages. In summary, nanoparticles from culture medium are internalized by in vitro cultured bovine embryos and their depletion affects the capacity of medium to support the proper embryo development.

This study aimed to determine the intensity, seasonality, and distribution by genera of, as well as to identify phenotypic markers of susceptibility to, gastrointestinal parasites among sheep on farms within the Brazilian savanna (cerrado) biome. We evaluated 1271 sheep, on seven farms, during the rainy season (in December 2017 and December 2018) and dry season (in July 2018 and July 2019). Parasitological evaluation was based on culture and EPG. We calculated hematocrit, as well as the body condition score and feces score. Of the sheep evaluated, 34.15% had moderate-to-severe parasitic infection. The factors of herds phenotypic characterization about helminth infections were (p 0.05 for all): anemia (OR = 5.72); leanness (OR = 1.80); loose stools or diarrhea (OR = 1.54); breed other than Santa Inês (OR = 2.31); weaned lamb category (OR = 4.76); lambing ewe category (OR = 4.66); and dry season (OR = 2.37). Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus, Oesophagostomum, and Cooperia accounted for 76.40%, 20.23%, 2.89%, and 0.47%, respectively, of the helminth genera identified, with their proportional distributions being comparable between the rainy and dry seasons. Changes in health management, with regard to helminth infection control, are urgently needed in order to combat the disease more effectively and sustainably.(AU)


A presente pesquisa objetivou determinar a intensidade, sazonalidade, predominância de gêneros e marcadores fenotípicos às parasitoses gastrointestinais em fazendas de criação de ovinos do Distrito Federal, no bioma cerrado brasileiro. Foram avaliados 1.271 ovinos oriundos de sete propriedades, durante os períodos chuvoso (dezembro de 2017 e dezembro de 2018) e seco (julho de 2018 e julho de 2019). Procedeu-se a avaliação parasitológica por coprocultura e OPG, dosagem de hematócrito, escore de condição corporal e de fezes. Dos indivíduos avaliados, 34,15% deles apresentaram infecção parasitária moderada a grave. Os fatores de caracterização fenotípica dos rebanhos quanto às infecções helmínticas (p 0,05), foram: anemia (OR = 5,72),magreza (OR = 1,80), fezes pastosas/diarreicas (OR = 1,54), raças distintas à raça Santa Inês (OR = 2,31), categorias de produção animal jovens (OR = 4,76) e fêmeas paridas (OR = 4,66), e período seco (OR = 2,37). Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus, Oesophagostomum e Cooperia foram os gêneros de helmintos observados nas seguintes proporções: 76,40%, 20,23%, 2,89% e 0,47%, respectivamente, sem distinção em sua distribuição entre os períodos chuvoso e seco. Mudanças no manejo sanitário com relação às helmintoses são urgentemente necessárias, para um controle da doença de forma mais eficaz e sustentável.(AU)

Based on survey data of the income distribution and living conditions of urban and rural residents collected by the China Economic Monitoring and Analysis Center in 2014, we investigated the mechanisms related to informal credit constraints on farmer health and then empirically analyzed the impacts of such constraints. Results showed that, in general, informal credit constraints significantly negatively impact farmer health. Compared with farmers whose credit was not informally constrained, the probability of farmers who faced informal credit constraints describing their self-rated health as "very good" fell by 6.64%. After controlling for endogenous problems, this proportion rose to 28.87%. Correspondingly, the probability of describing self-rated health as "very bad" increased by 0.45%. After controlling for endogenous problems, this proportion rose to 0.81%. The robustness test showed that our conclusions are strongly robust. Informal credit constraints significantly positively impacted the number of days of illness in 2013 in the sample of farmers, which means farmers who suffered from informal credit constraints required more sick days than those who did not experience informal credit constraints in 2013. As far as we know, this is the first study on the impact of informal credit constraints on Chinese farmer health.


Com base nos dados da pesquisa sobre a distribuição de renda e as condições de vida dos residentes urbanos e rurais coletados pelo Centro de Análise e Monitoramento Econômico da China em 2014, investigamos os mecanismos relacionados às restrições informais de crédito à saúde dos agricultores e, em seguida, analisamos empiricamente os impactos dessas restrições. Os resultados mostram que, em geral, as restrições informais de crédito afetam significativamente a saúde dos agricultores. Em comparação com os agricultores cujo crédito não foi informalmente restrito, a probabilidade de agricultores que enfrentaram restrições informais de crédito que descrevem sua auto-avaliação de saúde como "muito boa" caiu 6,64%. Tanto quanto sabemos, este é o primeiro estudo sobre o impacto das restrições informais ao crédito na saúde dos agricultores chineses.

A biotecnologia vegetal é uma área de elevada importância, uma vez que tem a função de obter organismos vegetais com características superiores aos já existentes no mercado. A clonagem é uma das ferramentas que podem ser utilizadas para essa função, através dela, seleciona-se organismos com características de interesse e realiza-se a multiplicação deste individuo, garantindo que as plantas regeneradas sejam geneticamente idênticas a matriz desejada, estabelecendo uma padronização. Sabendo que o setor de plantas ornamentais contribui de maneira expressiva com a economia e dentre as plantas ornamentais de mais estima entre os brasileiros, encontram-se as orquídeas, que vem adquirindo visibilidade cultural e um grande número de colecionadores nos últimos anos. O objetivo, do presente trabalho, foi estabelecer um protocolo de assepsia eficiente para meristemas laterais e obtenção de clones da orquídea do gênero Phalaenopsis. Para metodologia, visando a padronização de um protocolo de assepsia, foram elaborados e testados 4 tratamentos que possuíam diferentes combinações (concentração x tempo) de agentes como o hipoclorito de sódio, álcool, cobre, tween e lavagem dos explantes com água destilada estéril para meristemas laterais da orquídea de gênero Phalaenopsis. Plant biotechnology is an área of high importance since it has the function of obtaining plant organisms with characteristics superior to those already on the market. Cloning is one of the tools that can be used for this function, through it, organisms with characteristics of interest are selected and this individual is multiplied, ensuring that the regenerated plants are genetically identical to the desired matrix, establishing a standardization. Knowing that the ornamental plants sector contributes significantly to the economy and among the most esteemed ornamental plants among Brazilians, there are orchids which have acquired cultural visibility and a large number of collectors in recent years.  The objective of the present work was to establish an efficient assepsis protocol for lateral meristems and to obtain clones of the orchid of the genus Phalaenopsis. For methodology, aiming at the standardization o fan asepsis protocol, 4 treatments were developed and tested with different combinations (concentration x time) of agents such as sodium hypochlorite, alcohol, copper, tween and washing the explants with sterile distilled wáter for meristems of the orchid of the genus Phalaenopsis. A biotecnologia vegetal é uma área de elevada importância, uma vez que tem a função de obter organismos vegetais com características superiores aos já existentes no mercado. A clonagem é uma das ferramentas que podem ser utilizadas para essa função, através dela, seleciona-se organismos com características de interesse e realiza-se a multiplicação deste individuo, garantindo que as plantas regeneradas sejam geneticamente idênticas a matriz desejada, estabelecendo uma padronização. Sabendo que o setor de plantas ornamentais contribui de maneira expressiva com a economia e dentre as plantas ornamentais de mais estima entre os brasileiros, encontram-se as orquídeas, que vem adquirindo visibilidade cultural e um grande número de colecionadores nos últimos anos. O objetivo, do presente trabalho, foi estabelecer um protocolo de assepsia eficiente para meristemas laterais e obtenção de clones da orquídea do gênero Phalaenopsis. Para metodologia, visando a padronização de um protocolo de assepsia, foram elaborados e testados 4 tratamentos que possuíam diferentes combinações (concentração x tempo) de agentes como o hipoclorito de sódio, álcool, cobre, tween e lavagem dos explantes com água destilada estéril para meristemas laterais da orquídea de gênero Phalaenopsis. Plant biotechnology is an área of high importance since it has the function of obtaining plant organisms with characteristics superior to those already on the market. Cloning is one of the tools that can be used for this function, through it, organisms with characteristics of interest are selected and this individual is multiplied, ensuring that the regenerated plants are genetically identical to the desired matrix, establishing a standardization. Knowing that the ornamental plants sector contributes significantly to the economy and among the most esteemed ornamental plants among Brazilians, there are orchids which have acquired cultural visibility and a large number of collectors in recent years.  The objective of the present work was to establish an efficient assepsis protocol for lateral meristems and to obtain clones of the orchid of the genus Phalaenopsis. For methodology, aiming at the standardization o fan asepsis protocol, 4 treatments were developed and tested with different combinations (concentration x time) of agents such as sodium hypochlorite, alcohol, copper, tween and washing the explants with sterile distilled wáter for meristems of the orchid of the genus Phalaenopsis.
