ClinicalTrials.gov; NCT04023539. (AU)

Objective: To evaluate the effect of Cinnamomum zeylanicum (cinnamon) supplement use on the glycemic levels of Mexican adults with type 2 diabetes. Methods: A single-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted with 30 patients over 18 years of age with type 2 diabetes. They were randomized into intervention and control groups where they took 2-gram capsules of Cinnamomum zeylanicum or wheat flour (placebo) daily for 12 weeks; then the anthropometric and biochemical variables HbA1c, FPG, triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL and LDL were measured. IBM SPSS version 23 software was used and the Student's t-test and Mann-Whitney U test for independent samples (according to the behavior of the variable) were applied for differences between groups, p-values <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: No significant changes in HbA1c were seen between the two groups (p>0.05). However, post-treatment, the HbA1c value in the intervention group decreased significantly when compared to their baseline (-0.41%, p=0.01), while no differences were found in the control group (+0.03%, p=0.64). There were no significant differences in the anthropometric or biochemical variables. Conclusions: The consumption of 2 g of Cinnamomum zeylanicum in Mexican people with type 2 diabetes did not produce significant changes between the groups. New studies evaluating cinnamon supplementation on a larger sample size are suggested. ClinicalTrials.gov; NCT04023539. (AU)

RESUMO

Objective: This study aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of self-medication practices among students by conducting a bibliometric analysis of the available scientific literature. This research highlights the importance of promoting safe and responsible healthcare behaviors among students. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in the Scopus database to retrieve all peer-reviewed English articles and reviews published from 1968 onwards. The retrieved documents were analyzed to identify publication trends, citation counts, top journals, geographical distribution, and emerging research themes. Results: The findings indicate a significant increase in published literature about student self-medication over the past fifteen years. However, it was observed that the citation count for these documents was lower than expected, suggesting a need for increased attention toward this critical topic. The analysis also identified several hot topics in student self-medication, including the misuse of over-the-counter medications, dietary supplements, and psychoactive substances. The inappropriate use of antibiotics and the self-medication of mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, were also identified as significant problems. Conclusions and recommendations: Self-medication among students is a complex and critical issue that requires immediate attention. This study highlights the urgent need for greater awareness and education regarding responsible self-medication practices among students. New policies, interventions, and strategies should be developed to address malpractices, misconceptions, and harmful practices related to self-medication. Educational institutions and health authorities should play a crucial role in providing students with mental health resources and support services... (AU)

Introduction: During the previous health contingencycaused by COVID-19, there was a widespread disseminationof alleged treatments for this and other diseases. This led tothe use of dietary supplements (DS) as a possible alternativefor the prevention of this disease. DS consumption poses arisk in populations where the prevalence of use is high. Suchis the case in the sports community, where its consumption isa common activity due to its effects on sports performanceand body composition. Objective: To determine the prevalence of DS consump-tion in Mexican athletes during COVID-19 and identify thosewho used them to prevent infection. Additionally, to explorethe association between consumption and the variables ofgender, age, and occupation.Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional cor-relational study was conducted in a non-probabilistic conven-ience sample composed of 351 athletes from the northwest re-gion of Mexico. A survey was administered through the GoogleForms platform that included questions related to the frequencyof DS consumption as well as sociodemographic variables. Results: 22.5% of the participants were consuming sometype of DS during the lockdown, and 67.1% believed that theconsumption of these supplements contributed to the pre-vention of COVID-19. An association between consumptionand belief was found (χ2(2) = 26.256, p < 0.05; Phi = 0.274).The use of DS was primarily recommended by nutritionists(39.2%), coaches (21.5%), and physicians (20.3%). Conclusions: DS consumption was relatively low com-pared to other populations. However, the majority of DS con-sumers reported that DS contributed to the prevention ofCOVID-19 infection. A significant proportion of DS consumerssought recommendations from healthcare professionals.(AU)

Introduction: Hospital malnutrition in digestive cancerpatients requiring surgery has a high prevalence and repre-sents an increase in post-surgical complications, hospital stayand its associated costs. Objectives: The main objective is to analyze whether pre-surgery nutritional intervention in patients with digestive can-cer has an impact on hospital stay. The secondary objectivesare to analyze the nutritional status before surgery, to see ifthere is correlation between nutritional analytical markers andthe length of hospital stay and between receiving preopera-tive nutritional intervention and the evolution of anthropo-metric parameters. Material and Methods: Prospective 1-year study in which88 patients with digestive cancer requiring surgery were in-cluded. The hospital stay was compared between a group ofthese patients who received nutritional intervention pre-surgery and another group that did not receive it.Results: 47 patients were included in the interventiongroup and 41 in the control group. Among the patients eval-uated (intervention group), malnutrition was 29,5% beforesurgery and 64% after surgery. Oral nutritional supplementa-tion reached 80% of malnourished or at-risk patients, startingin 51% of them before surgery. Significant differences of lessthan 5 days of hospitalization were observed in patients in theintervention group.Discussion: The difference in the days of hospitalization inthe intervention group could be due to the intervention andnutritional supplementation prior to surgery since both re-ceived nutritional treatment during hospitalization in the sameproportion. Conclusions: The nutritional assessment of these patientsprior to surgery allows us to detect patients at risk of malnu-trition or already established malnutrition and significantly re-duce hospital stay by up to 5 days.(AU)

RESUMO

Backgrounds and Aims: Functional foods or nutraceuticals are innovative foods that contain substances that may improve health or prevent disease, as long as the concentration is safe and high enough to provide the desired benefit. Nutrients, dietary fiber, phytochemicals, other compounds, and probiotics are a few examples of added functional ingredients. Food can be deemed "functional" if it positively impacts specific bodily processes that go beyond nutritional effects to promote health and well-being and/or prevent the development of chronic diseases. Therefore, this paper aims to elaborate opinions based on the latest evidence to introduce the molecular docking simulation approach in the discovery and development of functional foods. Results and Conclusions: In functional food research, the computer-based approach allows for the virtual screening of bioactive compounds in foods. Instead of performing extensive laboratory experiments, researchers can simulate the interactions between bioactive compounds and molecular targets using molecular docking simulations. This virtual screening process helps identify bioactive compounds in foods that have the potential to interact with specific targets, providing insights into their mechanisms of action and potential health benefits. Now the technology field continues to receive significant attention from several researchers so technological progress never goes out. This technological advancement can be integrated between functional food and digital platforms. This platform may contain personalized recommendations, track health parameters, and empower individuals to make informed choices and monitor progress.(AU)

Pregnancy is one of the most important and difficult moments that a woman goes through throughout her life. It is a period of great need for macro and micronutrients to meet the demands of the developing fetus and avoid deficiencies, in order to obtain the best possible result. Nowadays, most women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant know the importance of getting the required amount of certain types of nutrients (proteins, fats, folate, etc.), as well as avoiding certain compounds (alcohol, tobacco, drugs, etc.) to avoid possible complications during pregnancy. In recent years, with the greatest scientific evidence available, it has been shown how some of these nutrients could have a more relevant role than previously believed in the optimal outcome of pregnancy. One of these nutrients being choline. Choline supplementation during pregnancy has been shown to be a non-pharmacological treatment capable of improving both physical (growth) and mental (memory) qualities of the new individual. Choline has been known as an essential nutrient since 1998 and several studies have shown its effectiveness in rodent models. The existence of recent publications that deal with its application in humans makes it necessary to carry out a systematic review. In this systematic review of the scientific evidence available from 2012 to the present that deals with the application of a higher intake of choline through supplementation as a treatment to improve pregnancy outcomes, its main objetive is to determine the effects that a nutritional intervention through choline supplementation in pregnant mothers can have on children's cognition (AU)

(AU)

Introduction: excessive accumulation of adipose tissue is accompanied by alterations in the inflammatory state and increased oxidative stress, and these variables are associated with insulin resistance and increased glucose and insulin levels. On the other hand, vitamins and minerals reinforce the antioxidant and inflammatory capacity, for this reasons we propose that they could contribute to the control of insulin resistance, glucose and lipid metabolism in a rat model of obesity. Objective: to analyze the effect of a multivitamin supplement on markers of insulin resistance, inflammation, and oxidative stress in obese rats on a cafeteria diet. Methods: thirty-five 28-day-old male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: 1, standard diet control; 2, standard diet plus multivitamin; 3, obese on a cafeteria diet; and 4, obese on a cafeteria diet plus multivitamin. After the treatments, glucose levels, HbA1c, insulin, TNF-α, IL-6, oxidative stress and lipid profile were analyzed by colorimetric methods, as well as the percentage of adipose tissue, Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA) index y Quantitative Insulin Sensitivity Check Index (QUICKI). Results: multivitamin supplementation significantly decreased visceral adipose tissue, HOMA index, glucose, HbA1c, oxidant stress, and inflammatory markers in the obese plus multivitamin rat group, compared with the obese cafeteria diet rat group and the standard diet rat control group. However, the group that was administered only the multivitamin without the cafeteria diet had increased levels of total adipose tissue, glucose, and oxidative stress, as well as the QUICKI index relative to the control group with the standard diet. RESUMO

Background: Dietary supplements (DSs) have grown in popularity over the last two decades, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is critical to educate medical students, the future health care providers, about the appropriate and safe use of DSs. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge, use, and attitude of undergraduate students at medical colleges at Jouf University towards DSs use for prevention and treatment of COVID-19. Methods: The present descriptive cross‑sectional questionnaire‑based study involved undergraduate medical students at Jouf University, KSA. After ethical approval, data were collected using an online questionnaire through Google forms during the second term of academic year 2021-2022. The questionnaire was divided into two sections composed of four components including Demographics data, health status, use and attitude, and students, perceptions toward dietary supplements use. Data were analyzed by employing GraphPad Prism®9 software. Findings: The questionnaires were completed by 574 students, with 256 (44.5.0%) males and 318 (55.4%) females. Participants who never used DSs (25.78%) were excluded from the study. The most commonly used supplement was multivitamins (24.8%), followed by vitamin D (21.1%). 26.29% used DSs based on HCP advice, while 24.41% made their own decision. The majority (65%) believed that DSs could boost their immune systems, while 35% believed that dietary supplements could always lower the risk of infecting with COVID-19. Approximately 43.7% of participants believed that DSs had no side effects. The majority of participants (46%) believed that DSs intake was not required after COVID-19 vaccination, and 56.6% believed that healthy food could be used instead of DSs. 62% of study participants continued to use DSs after being prescribed them. Approximately 67.6% said they would recommend DSs for COVID-19 prophylaxis and 63.4% said they would recommend DSs for treatment (AU)

(AU)

Introduction: The consumption of nutritional and protein supplements by adolescents may have important consequences for their health. Material and methods: Prospective observational study based on a survey of adolescents enrolled in six schools selected at random in the city of Seville. Our primary objective was to determine the actual consumption of dietary supplements in the adolescent population and quantifying their protein content. Results: We obtained a total of 263 valid responses that showed a prevalence of consumption of nutritional supplements of any kind of 19.01%, of which 56.0% (10.64% of the total) corresponded to adolescents that consumed protein supplements for a mean protein intake of 0.26 g/kg/day (SD, 0.18). The profile of consumers of any type of supplements differed from that of nonconsumers in age, use of long-term medication and weight loss or high-protein diets. The comparison of adolescents who consumed protein supplements versus nonprotein supplements only evinced a significant difference in the control of supplement consumption. Although most of these adolescents were not subject to external control, 25.92% of those who consumed protein supplements were monitored by a professional, compared to 7.38% of consumers of nonprotein supplements. In the group that consumed protein supplements, 85.18% of adolescents achieved the desired effect and 18.51% reported some form of negative effect. Conclusions: The prevalence of protein supplement consumption among adolescents in our area is 10.64%, with consumption of amounts corresponding to 25% of the recommended daily allowance of protein. The profile of protein supplement consumers is very similar to that of nonprotein supplement consumers. (AU)

In the management of hypercholesterolemia, besides advising a healthy, plant-based diet, it may be useful to recommend functional foods or nutraceutical with cholesterol-lowering properties. Given the progressive increase in the number of these products and their rising use by the population, the Spanish Society of Arteriosclerosis (SEA) has considered it appropriate to review the available information, select the results of the scientifically more robust studies and take a position on their usefulness, to recommend to health professionals and the general population their potential utility in terms of efficacy and their possible benefits and limitations. The following clinical scenarios have been identified in which these products could be used and will be analyzed in more detail in this document: (1) Hypolipidemic treatment in subjects with statin intolerance. (2) Hypolipidemic treatment «a la carte» in individuals in primary prevention. (3) Long-term cardiovascular prevention in individuals with no indication for lipid-lowering therapy. (4) Patients with optimized lipid-lowering treatment who do not achieve therapeutic objectives. (AU)

Introduction: oral nutritional supplements specific for diabetes (DSF) usually have a composition that favors their palatability and simultaneous glycemic and metabolic control. Objective: to compare the sensory acceptability of a DSF with respect to a standard oral nutritional supplement (STF) in patients at risk of malnutrition with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Method: randomized, double-blind, crossover, multicenter, controlled, double-blind clinical trial. Odor, taste and perceived texture of a DSF and a STD were evaluated using a scale of 1 to 4. Results: twenty-nine patients were recruited and 58 organoleptic evaluations of the supplements were registered. A better evaluation of DSF was observed with respect to STD, although no statistically significant differences were reached: odor, 0.04 (CI 95 %) -0.49 to 0.56 (p = 0.092); taste, 0.14 (CI 95 %), -0.35 to 0.63 (p = 0.561); texture, 0.14 (CI 95 %), -0.43 to 0.72 (p = 0.619). No differences were found when analyzed by order of randomization, sex, degree of malnutrition, greater or lesser degree of complexity, greater or lesser time of evolution of diabetes, or by being older or younger. Conclusions: the specific nutritional supplement for diabetic patients formulated with extra virgin olive oil, EPA and DHA, a specific mixture of carbohydrates, and fiber, presented an adequate sensory acceptance by malnourished patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.(AU)

RESUMO

Objectives: to determine the effects of vitamin B12 supplementation on neuropsychological function and disease progression in middle aged and elderly patients with cognitive impairment. Methods: this was a prospective case-control study. From May 2020 to May 2021, 307 participants clinically diagnosed with cognitive impairment in the Department of Neurology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University were enrolled. A total of 115 patients were included in this study. Meanwhile, 115 participants with cognitive impairment were randomly assigned in equal proportions to two groups: vitamin B12 treatment group (n = 58, vitamin B12 500 mg/d intramuscularly for seven days, followed by cobamamide 0.25 mg/d and methylcobalamin 0.50 mg/d) and the control group (n = 57). Demographic characteristics and blood biochemical variables were obtained from all participants. Cognitive performance was measured using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Cognitive performance was measured at baseline and after six months. Results: the vitamin B12 supplementation treatment patients who presented with cognitive impairment showed significant improvement, especially in attention, calculation (p < 0.01) and visual-constructional ability (p < 0.05), in their neuropsychological function compared to their matched group. Conclusion: vitamin B12 supplementation may improve frontal function in patients with cognitive decline. Vitamin B12 levels should be investigated in all patients with cognitive impairment.(AU)

Introduction: metabolic syndrome comprises a combination of diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity, and metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is associated with it. Objective: to evaluate the effect of supplementation with S-adenosyl-L-methionine + N-acetylcysteine + thioctic acid + vitamin B6 (MetioNac®) for 3 months on lipidic and biochemical parameters in subjects with metabolic syndrome and at risk of MAFLD. The reduction in body weight and the oxidative stress markers malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were also evaluated. Methods: patients with metabolic syndrome, at risk of MAFLD (FIB-4 < 1.30), and with an indication for weight reduction were recruited (n = 15). Control group followed a semipersonalized Mediterranean diet (MD) for weight reduction, according to the recommendations of the Spanish Society for the Study of Obesity (SEEDO). Experimental group, in addition to the MD, took three capsules of MetioNac® supplement per day. Results: compared with the control group, subjects taking MetioNac® showed significant (p < 0.05) reductions in the levels of TG and VLDL-c, as well as in total cholesterol, LDL-c, and glucose levels. They also showed increased levels of HDL-c. Levels of AST and ALT decreased after the intervention with MetioNac®, but this decrease did not reach statistical significance. Weight loss was observed in both groups. Conclusion: supplementation with MetioNac® may be protective against hyperlipidemia, insulin resistance, and overweight among metabolic syndrome patients. Further studies on this issue are needed in a larger population.(AU)
